I hate waiting. That’s why I have a love/hate relationship with the holidays. On the one hand, I love that there’s a pile of gifts waiting for me under the tree. On the other hand, I hate knowing that there’s a pile of gifts waiting for me under the tree but all I can do is poke and stare at them until the big day. Advent calendars are like chocolate torture!

You hate waiting, too. Luckily, the wait is over for the mystery air intakes.
Hey There, After a night recovering from ramen paradise, I was ready for more baseball. The Fighters

Hey There,

After a night recovering from ramen paradise, I was ready for more baseball.

The Fighters used to be located in Tokyo and shared the Tokyo Dome with the Giants. They moved to Hokkaido in 2004 and are the only the team requires opponents to fly in for games. Their star player is Yu Darvish, a starting pitcher, who starred for Japan in the most recent World Baseball Classic. He pitched the night before, so we weren’t able to see him.

A former Fighters player of note is Tsuyoshi Shinjo, who used to play with the Mets. After returning to Japan, he helped the Fighters win the Japan Series. I remember him because Shinjo appeared to have pointy ears, like an elf or Spock. My Dad would always point that out. I also remember him because he was one of the first Japanese players to join the Mets during a time when star Japanese players were starting to come over to the US with more frequency- Hideo Nomo had been successful, Ichiro Suzuki was on the Mariners, and the Yankees had signed Hideki Irabu. The Mets got Shinjo, who I didn’t think was all that special when he played in Japan, so I thought we got gypped. I think that Shinjo turned out better than Irabu, though.

The Fighters official name is the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters. Notice the hyphen between Nippon and Ham (Nippon-Ham is a meat packing conglomerate). Originally, there was no hyphen. Someone told me that the hyphen was added because people thought they were the Ham Fighters. I confess that I was one of those people, though by the time were in Sapporo, I believed it more for comedic effect, since my friends and I tried to figure out what a Ham Fighter was.

The Sapporo Dome itself is large and cavernous. I felt that it looked like an airplane hanger.

Like other teams, the Fighters have cheerleaders, though these cheerleaders dressed more like traditional cheerleaders. We also found out what a Ham Fighter looks like:

The Fighters won the game pretty easily, beating the Eagles 5-2. Interesting fact about this game: the winning pitcher was Masaru Takeda and the Hisashi Takeda got the save (no relation).

(Sorry for the odd division. These two and a half episodes cover the series’ final period of s

(Sorry for the odd division. These two and a half episodes cover the series’ final period of soulless plot-agony, just before it abruptly gets up and runs around for a final, surprisingly good second and then realizes it’s dead — I wanted to cover that whole last scene, all 35 minutes of it, in one swoop.)

More meetings in hotel rooms; more toybuilding. Aizawa determines that Light and Takeda are communicating in writing during their meetings, and alerts Mogi, Ide and Near — who tells him that, to be honest, Near’s already sure that Light is Kira. Nothing Aizawa does can change anything. His final task will simply be to “witness.”

The SPK members kidnap Misa and Mogi (they go willingly). Near reflects that, if Light’s Light, he’ll know the meaning behind his capture of Misa — presumably, that Near is retracing L’s original steps toward him.

Everyone prepares for the showdown. Near and Light both think they’ve got the other pinned. Mello — who, unbeknownst to us, has agreed to work with Near on a final suicide gambit — traps and kidnaps Takeda. The result is one dead punk, one dead newscaster, and finally, one dead gamer. Matt, we hardly knew — oh, what’s the point?

1. Watching Near stride through the problem doesn’t really work for me. I’ve made that clear. I know the Mello and Near arc was a conscious attempt to avoid “a repeat” of the Light/L struggle, but it does end up being one — except it’s also less believable and interesting, since NAME OF POORLY-DEVELOPED CHILD CHARACTER can apparently solve the whole fucking mystery that NAME OF WELL-DEVELOPED ADULT CHARACTER died trying to solve, on a quarter of the evidence, at a third of the risk, in half the time.

This is the last stop, and I’ll be busy at the terminal, so I’ll say it one more time: you guys spent twenty episodes building up a worthy and brilliant antagonist, a character whose every move made sense on five levels. Your fans love this character. Virtually everyone who’s worked on any part of the series cites him as their favorite. That’s great. Then you killed him. That’s brave.

Then you replaced him with this sort of Wesley Crusher guy who does everything he did, but renders it meaningless by doing it twice as well and without apparent effort. It’s like you killed off Batman, replaced him with Richie Rich and expected the fans to be happy. Fuck you and fuck your ending.

2. As usual for the second arc, while most of these death scenes are done well, there’s no lead-up or sense of agony to them. Lots of potentially shocking, dramatic, terrifying, redemptive moments, all tossed off casually into the abyss.

I realize that Mello’s death, in particular, had to be underplayed to avoid giving away the ending — in which case you care too much about your goddamn ending and too little about the reason people care what it is. Fuck your ending. I liked this series because it was about brilliant, charismatic characters and the intimacies of their thought process. Blindfolding me will not help.

3. I think it’s official that Light’s misogyny is meant to be as bad as it sounds; he’s just had too much to say about women lately for that not to be the case.

Of course, since he’s trapped in a universe where women usually are unappeasable monsters with no philosophical agency, it’s hard to argue with him.

4. I complain, but this sequence of episodes essentially has no chance of being good, because by now, the series has killed off every really human character except Aizawa. It’s possible to feel bad for Misa if you try too hard, but Misa was essentially killed off ages ago.

The writers do understand this, I think, and try to compensate by working on Giovanni and the rest of the SPK — but the whole thing goes by so fast; the timing’s a blood-soaked mess, and we grasp to the few moments of emotion only briefly before we’re dragged along to the next spectacle.

5. Interesting that the TV commentators argue that because Takeda died, she plainly “wasn’t up to the task” of being Kira’s spokesperson. Once again, the equation of death with losing comes up, and it’d be an interesting comment, except that — again — the series’ perspective really does seem to equate the two.

This showcase for then 17 year-old karate wunderkind Rina Takeda plays almost like a training manual

This showcase for then 17 year-old karate wunderkind Rina Takeda plays almost like a training manual for the sport. No wires. No stuntmen. Just pure, undiluted, high-kicking action. That’s more or less the promise of Fuyuhiko Nishi’s stripped down action flick, a modestly budgeted affair in which special effects are replaced by actual, eye-watering combat. This film is the real deal for serious martial arts fans who so often get short-changed by genre films enslaved to visual effects and wire-fu. Where High Kick Girl stumbles is the script’s inability to develop genuine characters or human interaction and the near absence of comic relief. But if fighting is why you want to see this movie, fighting is what you’ll get.

A high school girl named Kei joins a karate dojo and makes short work of all the boys she faces due to her vastly superior athletic abilities. Kei quickly decides she deserves her black belt. However, her sensei Matsumura denies her. Brash and impatient, Kei joins a rival group of fighters called the Destroyers, which don’t have strict guidelines like Matsumura, and even encourage their members to use their fighting abilities to earn quick cash. Unfortunately the group’s leader is recruiting fighters to attack Matsumura. When Kei objects to the plan she gets kidnapped and it’s up to Matsumura to defend his student.

High Kick Girl was made with a huge amount of respect for martial arts and martial artists. Instead of the combat passing by in the blink of an eye as it does in so many martial arts ventures, the action in High Kick Girl is shown blow for blow, often in slow motion and repeated in order to allow the audience to fully savour and digest the majestic magic of the martial arts. However, the film lacks the showiness of Sonny Chiba’s karate films and the panty flashing action one might expect from a Japanese action movie about a female fighter in a schoolgirl uniform.

The problems with High Kick Girl are many and frequent and immediately obvious. On the purely technical end, the cinematography is quite poor. 17 year-old Takeda may not be as cute and baby-faced as Chocolate’s [review] Muay Thai heroine Jija. Nonetheless, in time I have no doubt her skills can become an asset in bigger Asian action productions. Simply put, this chick is fierce and I was really looking forward to this one film. High Kick Girl opened in Japan this summer so a stateside release won’t happen anytime soon. Browse the web for torrents or aquire a bootleg. I won’t tell. Promise.

Alizyme plc has announced that as part of the reconstruction of the company, Tim McCarthy stepped down as Chief Executive Officer and resigned as a director of the Company on 3 July 2009. During this period of reconstruction, Alan Goodman will take charge of the day to day affairs of the Company. At the end of June the company announced that it does not now expect to have sufficient funding to last beyond the end of August 2009.

The company’s revenues to December 2008 were £1.85 million. Losses in the same period were £11.49 million. The bulk of the company’s revenues came from a handful of partnerships. In 2008, Alizyme received a payment of £1.71 million on the achievement of a milestone under a licence and development agreement between Alizyme and Takeda. In June 2008, it received an upfront payment of £1.58 million under a licence and development agreement between Alizyme Therapeutics Limited and Norgine BV. Under this agreement, Alizyme has obligations until February 2023 so the payment give rise to revenues of just £63,000 in the year. In November 2007, the company received an upfront payment of £1.21 million under a licence and development agreement between Alizyme and Prometheus Laboratories. Just £80,000 of this payment was recognised in the year.

Drug companies increasingly using Medical Science liaisons.

Every pharmaceutical trade magazine I’ve been reading recently has an ad for Kapidex (dexlansoprazole) in it. What a coincidence that this drug is coming out now. Dexlansoprazole is the R-isomer of Lansoprazole. In other words, Kapidex is the active isomer of Prevacid, a drug that is supposed to go generic this November. What a coincidence that this drug was released now, less than six months before Prevacid goes generic. Kapidex, by the way, costs around five dollars per pill.

Another lovely thing Takeda Pharmaceuticals did with this product is provide an oh-so-helpful comparison chart in their print ad. They compare Kapidex 30 mg and 60 mg with Lansoprazole 30 mg. Notice something misleading about that? Well, since Kapidex is the active isomer, they’re comparing 30 mg of Prevacid to something that is similar to 60 mg or 120 mg of Prevacid. Then they say, “Look, this is stronger, doctor, and the cash price is comparable (for now). You should switch all your patients over before Prevacid goes generic and gets way cheaper 6 months from now.”

Man, I just can’t wait till we get that first prescription for this overpriced, unethical, system-bloating rebranded drug. I’ll be counting those pills thinking, “5 . . . this is why I can’t afford good insurance . . . 10 . . . this is why I can’t afford good insurance . . . 15 . . . this is why I can’t afford good insurance . . .”

Anyone who is suffering from or knows someone who has diabetes knows very well how physically, menta

Anyone who is suffering from or knows someone who has diabetes knows very well how physically, mentally, emotionally and financially debilitating this disease can be. Though it affects people differently and how it affects an individual cannot be predicted, those affected with this condition can still live a healthy, normal life.

Staying healthy is important for all, but those with diabetes have to pay extra attention to their health. The symptoms and sometimes the medications used to treat this disease can have an impact on a person’s energy level, eating habits and feelings, thus compromising a person’s overall well-being. The key to treating diabetes is to control your blood sugar level. The following will help to do that:

• Eat healthy foods
• Lose weight if you are overweight
• Regular exercise
• Monitor your sugar level often
• No alcohol or tobacco
• Follow your doctor’s orders and take your medicine as prescribed

By following the above guidelines, people with diabetes stand a better chance of improving the quality of their lives. However, for more than half of Americans residing in the US, the steep price of medication for diabetes can hinder their desire to better their lives. Each year millions of Americans across the United States who do not have the benefit of health insurance or prescription drug coverage plans are faced with costs that they are often unable to afford, causing them to risk their health, lives, and sometimes even their bank accounts. Here are a few tips on how you can save on medicine:

Be honest in telling your doctor if he can prescribe an equally-potent, yet cheaper, brand of medicine. Better yet, ask him if it’s okay that you buy generic or if he has samples he can give you.

Compare the prices of your prescription medicine. Visit or call pharmacies within your area and find out which offers the cheaper price. Many pharmaceutical companies offer coupons and rebates on medicine, so be sure to visit the companies websites or contact them by phone to find out more information.

Go online and register for programs out there designed specifically to help people who can’t afford their prescription drugs.

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company the largest pharmaceutical company in Japan and its wholly-owned subsi

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company the largest pharmaceutical company in Japan and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc., today announced that the FDA has approved an extended release version of the combination medication ACTOplus met(R) and metformin HCl for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in addition to diet and exercise . ACTOplus met(R) XR is the first and only prescription oral anti-diabetic fixed-dose combination medication available with the extended release form of Metformin. This will be available in a convenient, once-daily dosing option. ACTOplus met XR is intended to be used by adults with type 2 diabetes.

ACTOplus met XR combines ACTOS and metformin, two widely used medications in a single tablet. ACTOS directly targets insulin resistance, a condition in which the body does not efficiently use the insulin it produces. Metformin acts by reducing the amount of glucose produced by the liver. Combined, these two medications work in combination to help patients with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels. Takeda expects ACTOplus met XR to be available later this calendar year.

Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Almost 24 million people currently live with diabetes and it is estimated that roughly 5.7 million more Americans are unaware that they even have it. Type 2 diabetes is a progressive and chronic condition and requires continued monitoring by a patient and their physician. In addition to diet and exercise, patients may need to take multiple medications to help maintain glucose control. In 2007, the world is estimated to have spent at least $232 billion to treat and prevent diabetes and its complications. By 2025, this estimate will exceed $302.5 billion. For Americans that do not have insurance coverage and meet certain income guidelines there is prescription drug help available through various assistance programs. Check with the individual drug company or contact Rx HELP to see if you might qualify.

Through the deal Takeda gained access to the blood-cancer medicine Velcade. The second largest deal of 2008 was made by Life Technologies Corporation (formerly Invitrogen Corporation), having paid $6.7 billion to acquire Applied Biosystems Group. The third largest deal was made by Eli Lilly which paid $6.5 billion to acquire ImClone Systems Inc. This gave Lilly the rights to Imclone’s cancer drug Erbitux and several experimental tumor treatments. Overall the biotechnology acquisitions in 2008 totaled $28.5 billion in the US and $5 billion in Europe in 2008.

Ernst and Young reported a 46% decline from 2007 in the amount of capital raised by U.S. and European biotechnology companies, which totaled $16 billion. Money from initial public offerings also plunged 95% from$2.3 billion in 2007 to $116 million in 2008. After a record high in 2007 the decline in Biotech venture financing dropped only 19% to $6 billion in 2008.
