Beauty and the Werewolf by Mercedes Lackey

I should preface this by saying that fairy tales aren’t my thing. I don’t want to be a princess, or live in a castle, or have little people as servants, or overly helpful animals scurrying about indoors (except Fatty McButterpants – see below). With that said, this tale in the Mercedes Lackey’s 500 Kingdoms series was a surprisingly fresh take on the romance novel.

Bella may be brainy, but she’s certainly lacking a bit in the street (or woods) smarts department when she sets off through the forest during a full moon. It’s pretty obvious there’s going to be a werewolf out there. Dum. Duh-dum, dum duuuuum. Sure enough she’s bitten and carted off to a fortress to wait for the next full moon and see if she will turn into a writhing, sweaty beast.

What upped my grump factor with this tale was that it lacked a hero until a few hundred pages in. Was Bella interested in the sexy, tough woodsman or the nerdy, quiet sorcerer? Spoiler alert: she chooses the BETA! Awesome invisible servants, archery skills, and women in breeches aside, the rest of the book was only so-so.

Steamiest Sex: Our princess remains pure. But a make-out sesh in the glass-walled sorcerer’s lair is enough to fog up the windows.

Final Judgment: Mercedes Lackey has an audience, but it definitely isn’t me.

This week’s mailbox is a somewhat interesting tale… I apparently received a package of books shipped from the States to my parents’ home (I didn’t want to deal with my local post office this time of year) . The unfortunate part is that whomever did the shipping sent it through a brokerage that was charging $20 for the border crossing and my parents decided to send it back. I have no idea what was in it, but I really wish the package had just been stuck in the regular mail *le sigh*

What I actually did get to “keep” is a couple books from the library. I got out two books I’ve been waiting forever on. The first is from one of my all time favourite historical series called “Cynster” written by Stephanie Laurens, called Temptation and Surrender. The second book is by Mercedes Lackey and part of the “Tale of the Five Hundred Kingdoms” fantasy series, Beauty and the Werewolf.
