Perhaps this post’s greatest flaw lies in the fact that I will not be utilising any real observations (in the anime industry) to support my claim; rather, I will simply indulge in gross generalisation. But hear me out if you love me.

What Is The Topic?

Generally, there exist two kinds of anime fans: the “old school” fan and the “freshly baked” fan. The freshly baked fans, tend to mind their own business, eagerly consuming contemporary works; but the old school fans see a need to assert their belief that the golden age of anime has long passed, it, fading into the shades of a distant past. The freshly baked ones’ focusing on new anime shows is seen as an iniquity by their old school counterparts; that is to say, “newer fans are noobs because they watch contemporary sh*t and fail to appreciate great stuff like ******, ****** *****, and G**G**G**,” say the old school fans.

The main pillar of the old school faction’s claim is through the mentioning of the excessive use of popular archetypes, familiar plots, and motifs, leading to the asphyxiation of creativity in the anime industry. No, they shall not stand for this, the old school enforcers. They shall make sure that their ignorant colleagues shall see the light, and repent! So, it is believed by the ancients that the anime industry no longer has the vitality to produce shows of praiseworthy merit, and all nice things came from the past.

Why Magical Ferret Begs To Differ

But Magical Ferret begs to differ. The past can never outshine the future! Simply, all pioneering works are an issue of trial and error, or experimentation. Without the guidance of any precedence, that is how older works were created. They either succeed, or disappoint. But it is a different matter when it comes to the consideration of anime works in the future. When anime studios make animes in the future, they have a weapon that their predecessors do not have: the privilege of referring to the past.

Brilliance, in all forms in life, can rarely be imagined as the result of sudden and isolated occurrences. Greatness is the result of reflecting upon accumulated failures in the past, and the reflection and improvisation of pioneering concepts. A simple example can be found in the deeds of a good fellow called Willy Shakingspear, a writing man of the Renaissance period. No doubt, he is well known for writing great works like “Harry Potter”, and “Gonzo’s Romeo X Juliet” (they all came from the UK, so he must have wrote it). But few are aware of the fact that Willy was one who improvised. And when we talk about improvisation, it means something had to precede before improvisation can take place! Before Willy, there was another man who toiled in the uncharted waters of uncertainty. He violated playwright decorum, gave logic the boot, and became a pioneer whose works would eventually inspire Willy in the future. That man, who dared to pierce the heavens with his pen (for the penis mightier than the sword), is Chris Marlol. End of the story. So what is the message that Magical Ferret is trying to deliver? Simply, greatness can be achieved through reflecting on the past! Without Chris Marlol, there would not have been a Willy Shakingspear. Without Chris Marlol, Willy would not have been great. Without Chris and Willy, John Milley could not have produced the awesome sauce “Parrot’s Dice Lost“. Without Strike Witches, there would not be Strike Witches 2. And so on.

But Ah Ha! Here Comes A New Challenger (Who Wants To Kick My Furry Bottocks)!

But now, we are faced with another inquiry: if the future is full of promise, why are newer works so sh*tty as compared to the past?

Well, my friend. That is because your mind is playing tricks on you! It is easy to look at a collective of great works that define a certain period and praise of that period’s splendour, but it is never easy to confidently say that the future will always surpass the past while one is stuck in the slow moving present. For the dust of an age can hardly be visible to many until it has finally settled down.

Let us go back to the example pertaining to Willy Shakingspear. People agree that his time, which happens to be the Renaissance, was a time of great probing and enlightenment! Great works were forged! But how many are aware of the cesspool of mediocre or absolutely worthless works from which those defining masterpieces rose? If greatness can be based on the alphabets, then perhaps most people can only reach up to the letter D, and the outstanding ones, probably Q. Finally those supernova of excellence are the marks of those who went on to claim R or S. But then, how many are able to reach that extent? (Protip: Go study statistics)

Those who reside in the ongoing present can hardly sense any form of potential or promise as his/her sense is stifled by the presence of the many disappointments, still lingering strongly in their senses. This renders the appreciation of the new successes weaker (only to be enhanced through nostalgia in the future lol). But on the other hand, old school fans can reminisce over a past, strongly imbued by their lingering fond impressions of good old works, while the disappointments of the past are cast aside through forgetfulness. My old uncle Scruffy Ferret whines about how the past is great, but he forgets that we had to constantly flee from Peter The Great Ferret back then.

So…

Magical Ferret can firmly believe that the future will never disappoint! Never!

Also, flat chested prepubescent girls look nicer with modern visual renderings. Old graphics? Ewwww.

P.S. Mayor Jaypee wrote something about the good old days too. But I do not know what he is trying to say.

Waiting in line, three hours later...

I have to admit: I went to Anime Boston with the nasty purpose of observing rabid yaoi fangirls and weird Final Fantasy cosplayers in their natural habitat. But I was disappointed! Though there were some screaming kids (no paddles, sadly to say), the overall behaviour of those who showed up was rather civilised. However, there is just one problem! Some con-goers do not seem to live a hygienic lifestyle. WHY DO THEY SMELL WORSE THAN A SWEATING ARMY SOLDIER WHO HAD JUST FINISHED RUNNING A COUPLE OF ROUNDS AROUND A TRACK? Anyway, I think it is reasonable to say that Anime Boston is a safe haven for geeks to do geeky stuff. Fun times!

Oh yes, this is a post about what had taken place on Saturday.

Kalafina’s concert was pretty much the highlight of my visit; it justified my spending of money for the entrance pass. Unfortunately, I did not keep track of the exact number of songs that were performed, but because certain songs left a strong impression, I am able to make certain comments about them. The song, Mata Kaze Ga Tsuyokunatta, was a powerful upbeat song but the ladies’ vocals were overwhelmed by the song’s loud blasting tune. But the performance was compensated with an impressive ARIA and Sprinter. Gosh I never knew ARIA and Sprinter would sound so nice during a live performance! Personally, I think Kalafina shine when the songs demand more of their vocals as opposed when there is a domination of complicated tunes.

Alas, I cannot remember who was the one who trolled the audience into believing that the performance was truly over. Hmm… I believe it was Wakana who said, “This is the last song!”

But after half of the audience had proceeded out of the concert hall, they returned hastily to inform the remaining people that Yuki Kaijura will be onstage. 最後の曲じゃなかった！ Fortunately, I around to listen to the encore performance. With the complement of Yuki Kaijura’s keyboard playing, the trio sang probably my favourite of the Kara no Kyoukai theme songs: Kimi Ga Hikari Ni Kaeteyuku. Oh what a troll!

Yes. The ladies have strong vocals and are very much capable of delivering a satisfying live performance.

Omo has stated a list of the songs that were performed during the concert. Go check it out and read what he has to say.

And I LOLed when I saw a sixty year old granny (I guess she is not a Puritan!) rocking her head to the beat of “oblivious.”

OMG! LOOT! THE CARDINAL LAWS OF ANIMU BLOGGING DEMAND THAT I SHOW OFF MY ACQUISITION! PFFT

P.S. I am confused. Yuki Kaijura mentioned that “Kimi Ga Hikari Ni Kaeteyuku” is translated as “Return To The Light,” but the kanji written on my album says otherwise. Instead of the kanji for “to return,” the kanji for “to change” is used in the album’s printing. Or maybe I am starting to fail in my understanding of kanji!

ID SOJOURNER: MEH. It would have been more entertaining if someone had transported Shin over and have him hijack the stage and sing Seikan Hikou in his meido costume!

Actually, The Blue Fox Alley came into existence on the 22nd of April, but I never had a chance back then to “celebrate” the passing of the first year due to my being kept busy by final examination preparations. Having just finished my examinations, I find myself in possession of a decent amount of free time. Hence, I would like to humbly announce that this little tavern of ours is now 1 year old!

Having fumbled around, perhaps it is imperative that one reflects on how this blog has contributed to the community, and after some consideration I can surely say WE ARE NOTHING BUT A CESSPOOL OF RANDOM THOUGHTS. Indeed, a blog’s charm lies in its emphasis on a certain type of writing, be it episodic summary or editorials. However, the unwillingness to commit to a certain style is, besides ennui lol, probably because this blog was an sudden creation, hence no exact structure or format was in mind when we started. From what I can see, this blog is pretty much going to be a dull and quiet corner for people like me to make insignificant commentary (along with occassional outbursts of extreme emotions).

Yes, as far as it is possible, this pub/tavern/bar will strive to entertain you folks with our clownish acts and “classy” (note the quotations) performances. We have been in beta version for some time and hopefully we can go into the main phase. Apparently no one really reads this blog, except for a few, but the show must go on! For those who have been saintly enough to support us, we humbly ask that you stay with us for yet another year.

P.S. Some people have accused me of having a split personality. That is nothing but a canard.

Sakuracon has succeeded in something that CLANNAD ~After Story~ has failed to do: entertain me.

The unfavourable response from group of commentators on ANN baffles me. Yeah. I think the Sakuracon advertisement, which featured a bunch of Japanese pop-culture fans shouting out a bunch of catchphrases, is satiric in nature. Also, it was pretty fun and effective.

A satire is suppose to exaggerate reality in order to raise awareness. By doing so, the satire is suppose to succeed in affecting people to REFORM. Would you have felt a pang of guilt after witnessing the overzealous profusion by those actors? The advertisement is imploring greater sensibility and moderation in one’s hobbies. By seeing how ridiculous the lovers of “GAY ROCK” and “GUHROOGAMESH” are, hopefully one would reform by showing more maturity when attending an anime con (for example, do not break trees or spank people with paddles).

Is the advertisement insulting? Does it present an inaccurate depiction of anime fandom in America? I am not sure. But I have heard of funny anecdotes of people in my college acting really weeaboos-ish in first semester Japanese classes. How weeaboo can they get? Well, I was told by a friend of mine that he has a female classmate in his first semester Japanese class who friggin imitates the mannerism of L from Death Note. Now that has to suggest something. Man I really do not know what Sakuracon was thinking when they made that ad. It is so blatant in its mocking. While people like me are able to laugh at it and do some self-reflection, there will be others who are not so graceful.

Putting that aside. Let us talk about the fact that there was a parody of the original advertisement that was requested by Sakuracon to be removed off Youtube.

MAN. WHY WAS I ACTING SO POLITE? THE SAKURACON ADVERTISEMENT HAS DONE NOTHING BUT TO INCREASE MY DESIRE TO VISIT A CON FOR THE LULZ.

SO WHY DID SAKURACON DEMAND THAT THE YU-GI-OH PARODY OF THEIR AD BE REMOVED? IT IS A DESERVING (BUT EVIL) SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR OF THE ORIGINAL! UNLESS THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT THE ORIGINAL HAD SUCCEEDED IN DOING, THERE WAS NO NEED TO ASK FOR THE REMOVAL OF THE PARODY!

OH WAIT. I KNOW IT. SAKURACON IS JEALOUS OF THE PARODY BECAUSE THE PARODY EXCEEDS THE ORIGINAL IN ITS AFFEECTIVE ABILITY!!!!

Man… I wanna go to my first con.

Sojourner’s Summary of ID SOJOURNER’s stupidity

The Sakuracon advertisement is a sad case of exaggerated and insulting truth.

ID SOJOURNER does not hate the ad like the Chicks on Anime because he likes mockery, justified or not.

Even if the Sakuracon ad is not 100% accurate, it ought to be grimly taken as a reminder of childish fan behaviour.

There is no point in being offended by the “inaccurate depiction.” If you are not like that, good for you. The ad deserves none of your anger and attention.

Sakuracon’s request for the removal of the Yu-Gi-Oh ad parody is an oxymoron because the parody has the same message as the ad. Thus, Sakuracon’s actions contradicts the purpose of broadcasting their ad.

GUHROOGAMESH!

Given that I had a week long break, I had the intentions to write something but I ended up succumbing to ennui. Much apologies are needed for my dear ghostlightning for I had promised to complete a certain project that he had kindly invited me to take part in.

Then again, my lack of activity is due to several reasons:

1. I was busy converting someone into a Macross fan through the “marathoning” of the entire Frontier series with him.

2. I am addicted to Sankaku Complex Sainukoku Monogatari.

3. The first few episodes of Skip Beat distracted me, and I like it.

4. I slept more than 12 hours a day.

5. Had to do a barrel roll.

6. I finished watching an entire K-drama series (it was not a good idea).

They are horrible excuses I have to say! I needed to work on my time management.

P.S. Saiunkoku is really enjoyable but there are too many guys (I am waiting for Jyuu-san hime to arrive on the scene to moderate things). Also, I am disgusted at the fact that I am able to understand the puns in the show.

I believe this is pretty much the first time I am addressing the readers of this blog without donnin

I believe this is pretty much the first time I am addressing the readers of this blog without donning either the role of the Sojourner or ID SOJOURNER. You may ask what difference would it incur and I guess it is ironically redundant and significant at the same time. Explaining this, I am afraid, is going to take some time.

So despite the fact that I have been watching anime all my life, my keen interest in anime was only sparked when I was offering a period of service to the world’s mightiest military force (mightiest in my opinion because we have never been defeated in a war, since we have never been involved in one). After watching several anime shows that were borrowed from my mates in the army, I was greatly enthralled by the potential of the anime medium has in invoking emotional and intellectual interest in me. I also attribute the allure of anime to the fact that I have always been fawning over the art of storytelling and music so it was no surprise anime eventually got included into my other general interests like books and films. So after succumbing to the appeal of anime, I guess what followed is rather conventional. Eventually my heavy anime diet that lasted for some time lead to my discovery of an “anime appreciating” community on the Internet. To be honest with you, the first anime-related post that I had read is not exactly the most pleasant one. If you had stumbled upon a heart-warming post that was written by Jeff Lawson, then good for you. For my case, it was RIUVA’s post about the ODEX saga. With my discovery of anime blogging, there was no way I could view anime again without minding the voices of the community (,especially the sarcastic ones). I am always piqued by the interaction that takes place on the Internet so it was just a matter of time before I realise that it would be fun to be part of it.

The Blue Fox Alley is my way of reaching out to the community. Its purpose is to serve as a stage for my silly little creations, the Sojourner and ID, to act out in whatever way that conforms to the proprieties which I have contrived to define their personalities. The Sojourner is a meek little man who likes to agree as much as possible with everyone; and ID SOJOURNER is the “dark side” of the Sojourner who performs whatever the latter does not dare to do. My aim in contriving these two fictional personalities hitherto is only to entertain those who have been most kind in gracing us with their presence in this little blog. I hesitate in stating in the affirmative when it comes to the question of have I been successful in my objective in being in the community, but I shall strive to deliver better than ever.

We serve a very small audience here at the Blue Fox Alley but as the Sojourner once said, “The show must go on!” I extend my appreciation to those who actually bother checking us out and it is hoped that you would continue to offer your support to us. Happy new year.

P.S. There is a reason why I have not been watching a lot of anime. Finally, I have the patience and autonomy to read some novels. Pardon me if there is anyone who has a different opinion but Pride and Prejudice is wonderful!

Regards

This tavern is open for business once more! But it is not as if anyone had missed it while we were gone! Ha! That said, the P-Meister is using medicine school as an excuse to appear “busy”; but according to his roommate, who I happen to know personally, tells me that the P-Meister is still slacking! Talk about LIES!

Having returned, I find that the flow of time keeps infusing our beloved blogosphere with the usual mix of dorama and lulz. Besides that, I am glad to see that the community has gotten livelier because of the spunk of up-and-coming blogging enthiasist Ghostlightning. I look forward to more of his contributions.

Oh yes. Once again, jpmeyer has shown me the vastness and profoundness of the Internet with his latest post about some fellow called John. Without my good man, I would not have been aware of the existence of F*CKIN OTAKU and ASK JOHN. Do not mind me. I am just mentioning this because my curiousity led me to explore the cosplay section of the F*CKIN OTAKU.

I am crying at the moment.

Anyway, it is good to be back and I ought to write something.

Hopefully once my exams are done, I would resume my strife for more e-penis and write something related to anime. lol.

What one can expect when I return:

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann review that has been delayed for some time.

Dennou Coil review.

I will work on my really helpful Vital Information For Your Daily Life series of posts.

An attempt will be made to bring The P-Meister back to the blogosphere for he has been meditating for too long in his Secret Hentai Lair.

Play Left 4 Dead

Watch Cowboy Bebop

Drink coke.

P.S. But I still do not have any control over a particular guy. He might still be around.

P.P.S. He is confused about his gender because of Marmot. So now he thinks he is a bashful and sweet little girl who has a onee-sama. I have nothing to do with it; but I do appreciate it if he could stop using my money to buy dresses.

With the tsundere dominating the anime market now, there is little love for another subset of moe, the yandere.

Wiki: Yandere (ヤンデレ, Yandere) is a Japanese term for a personality that is initially extremely loving and gentle, then at one point becomes deranged or psychotic, often brutally so.

There are two different types of yandere that I came up with.

The Loving-you-is-serious-business yandere. Probably the most obvious and noticable type, and they really mean serious business. One of them is Kaede from Shuffle!.

The Gentle-until-provoked yandere, sometimes known as yangire. Though some people might not agree, I still believe they are yandere. Our dearest Nanoha, usually with a smile of a angel, was given an aweful nickname of the white devil after snapping in episode 8.

DVD Quality

Not true yandere unless the ratio of craziness/psychotic/madness to gentleness is 5% to 95%. The keyword for them is “snap”.

Not true yandere if they show any sign of tsun. Not true yandere if they did not show any hints/signs of becoming one in the early stages (duh).

I don’t know the reason why some anime fans love yandere, but here are some of mine.

I’M UKE. Their unrequited love is amazing. I mean, they are able dedicate their life for someone, not easy. How often did a role of a gentle and nice character make a lasting impression or remains etched on your otaku mind? Yandere will always leave a deep impression, or maybe a scar, in your memory. No one can forget Ms Nice Boat. And lastly, I’M REALLY UKE when they snap, they send chills to my spine, which feels strangely good.

But please don’t always associate yandere with blood and murder. Ops, okay, never mind those pictures above. Let’s just enjoy anime.

So, how did you guys find Chaos Head? I kept laughing throughout the 20 minutes. I really LOL’ed at the ending part of episode 2. The way Yua interrogated Takumi was delicious.

To sum, like tsundere, yandere DON’T work in real life. Yeah real life sucks. I’m always putting on a smiling face but in fact I’m…. LOL JUST KIDDING!

There are some things that are imperative in nature and you must keep them in mind while engaging in

There are some things that are imperative in nature and you must keep them in mind while engaging in a conversation with an appreciator of Japanese visual culture. When I refer to the term ‘appreciator of Japanese visual culture’, it means one who is not an average chomper of the standard ’shounen’ mainstream shows. Things are easier when you are interacting with a chomper for all you need to do is to join the chomper in a session of praising how hot Allen Walker is or whether Sasuke is better looking than Itachi (although they look practically the same). However if you are faced with an appreciator of Japanese visual culture also known as The Anime Fan, you are dealing with a different scenario.

One has to understand that the Anime Fan is compelled to affirm one’s own taste in anime appreciation and the Anime Fan seeks to do so by avoiding standard shows like Naruto, Bleach and D Gay Gray Man because being different is a perceived allusion to having ‘class’ and being intelligent. And with that in mind, which is what has been written in the previous sentence, one would be ready to handle a conversation with The Anime Fan.

The reason why The Anime Fan would want to talk about anime is because of the urge to affirm his or her taste in anime. By talking with someone who watches anime as well, The Anime Fan attempts to access whether the other person is has better taste in anime through questions like ‘So what are you favourite genres’ or ‘What are your top favourites?’. Usually The Anime Fan is confident in having better taste so you do not have to worry about accidently making The Anime Fan feel bad. If The Anime Fan is not confident, he or she would not have attempted to bring up such a topic in the first place.

In order to make your Anime Fan friend feel good, you must allow the one whom you are talking to muse about the qualities of several of his or her own top picks. Be prepared to be accosted by long sentences about how certain shows have thought provoking themes in philosophy and pseudo-religious references. There might be a slight chance that your Anime Fan fan might delve deeper into arguing that anime appreciation is a sub-culture for intellects and begins to abuse the term otaku (but that is another story). Basically, animes that are less popular are tools used by The Anime Fan to present an image of being different and variation is a good thing in their opinion. Apart from indie anime like Eve no Jikan or Kaiba (used for recent examples), The Anime Fan might have a tendency to bring up shows from the 80s or early 90s because going vintage is another way to show one’s class. And never express doubt in The Anime Fan’s taste, it only serves to extend the length of the conversation because of The Anime Fan’s determination to justify his or her preferences. Apart from keeping quiet most of the time apart from those moments when you have to express some positive acknowledge to boost the ego of The Anime Fan, you must not attempt to mention an indie anime from your knowledge. This is because it prompts The Anime Fan to initiate a phase of critical comparison, judging how indie your show is as compared to his or hers.

So remember, The Anime Fan is a generous giver and you have to receive all that is splashed in order to make The Anime Fan feel good. Keeping that in mind, you are close to the beginning of a beautiful friendship with The Anime Fan.

EXTRA: The Anime Fan watches D Gray Man but will never admit to it for some reason.

Well I am not really going to talk about NHK Ni Youkoso despite the picture.

I was at a Kinokuniya bookstore to hunt for the final volume of NHK Ni Youkoso and it was there waiting for me to buy it. Since there were three copies of that volume, I reckoned they were not going to vanish in a flash so I decided to walk around the bookstore to browse through books of other interest. In fact, I cannot even recall the name of the section where I found the book which is also the reason for this post. Grinning like a some imp, it compelled it me lay my hands on it.

50 Mathematical Ideas You Really Need To Know was the title, seriously. No wait, are you laughing? Not a single bit? Then that means I am the only weird one who finds the title amusing. Flipping it around, I was informed of what great knowledge I would be imparted with. They included Fibonacci numbers, Euclid’s algorithm, magic squares and the Riemann hypothesis. I wished they would have added Pythagoras Theorem for that would have cracked me up further. Man this thing should have been named ‘50 Mathematical Ideas You Really Need To Know To Impress Noobs And Your Uncles’.

Anyway I was amused enough to purchase it, and I had not forgotten about NHK Ni Youkoso. The good laugh sort of eased the pain of my sore back; I had been sick due to two vaccines that were administered to me. Just as I was leaving the Kinokuniya, I chanced upon another book called ‘50 Marketing Ideas You Really Need To Know’ and it was sitting next to some random book with Alan Greenspeen’s smiling face on it. Damn!

Alright, so it is not as superficial as I had thought after browsing through it back at home. I should have noticed that it comprises of 200 plus pages so reasonable explanations were given for most of the ideas but a sore back and a groggy mind was really hindering my ability to observe back in the bookstore. For some reason I had assumed the book only had 53 pages. One page for an introduction, one page for the contents page, one for the glossary and fifty for the fifty ideas.

P.S I am still at the first volume of NHK Ni Youkoso but I could not help but take a peep at the final volume. wwwwwttttttffff? Our hikkomori hero has a sexual relationship with Misaki?

Come on folks. Join me by calling this OST -Nyan 70-!

I know others like Kurogane and DarkMirage have already proclaimed Macross Frontier OST: Nyan Furo as a must get item but the thing is it is so awesome that I cannot help but join in as well.

-First Impression of Nyan 70-

I wet myself.

-Looping through the tracks-

I spoilt myself with deculture and at the same time, I had to loop these tracks to counter the R&B songs that were blasting from my brother’s room. Funny that my brother is all ‘Americanised’ and his elder brother is into anime. Our home was a horrible war zone, it was Kayne West’s Stronger Vs. Ranka’s Ninjin Loves You Yeah.

-After thoughts about Nyan 70-

Well it is obvious, with the fact that ‘Kyuuun Kyuuun’ (Ranka’s rendering of My Boyfriend Is A Pilot) and some other music pieces are missing, that there will be more OSTs to come for Macross Frontier. Not that I am complaining, I would be pleased if the future releases are as enjoyable as Nyan 70.

What Nyan 70 succeeded in achieving is in capturing the entire atmosphere of the Macross universe. We all know that the Macross ‘legendarium’ revolves around the dreamy theme of music reaching the hearts of people and that was what seemed to be effusing from the songs. Perhaps due to my poor ability in writing, I am only capable of describing what makes the entire Macross franchise so appealing (to me) as simply ‘dreamy’.

Personally, the first track -Frontier 2059- had the most impact for me because it compelled me to reminisce on all that had happened in the Macross universe prior to the current Frontier series. This track probably had so much effect on me due to nostalgia. But the other track which I was really hoping to see in Nyan 70 did not appear, and it is the one which was played during the beginning of the 3rd and 4th episode of Macross Frontier prior to the OP song explaining about history of the Zentraedi race and Captain Global’s Humanity Project.

Oh and… The songs are awesome. :p

My thoughts about the power of music

It is an universal language to me, capable of transcending boundaries, and reaching out to the hearts of people. Nyan 70 just happened to remind me how awe-inspiring music can be. Is it in the collective existence of us all to desire and create this form of art, I wonder.

While music may not always have the depth of words in terms of inspiring, it is surely not hindered by factors like a language barrier and is very effective in conveying messages with just a string of pitches and tones.

This reminds me about the recent presidential election in Taiwan where politics are pretty flamboyant and messy. The two big political parties, The Democratic Progressive Party and the Chinese Nationalist Party, were all guilty of playing melodramatic or tear jerking music to invoke the emotions of their supporters during their political rallies. I would usually watch with awe as each rallies end with the restless cheers of the passionate supporters. It was as if the use of music amplified the influence of the candidates over the supporters, adding additional layers onto their credibility.

Music is scary.

Just a bit about Nakajima Megumi

I profess. I am starting to take a liking towards the voice actor of Ranka Lee. It all began when I first heard her voice during the preview episode of Macross Frontier last year. A refreshing yet unfamiliar voice it was to me, I was slightly stumped when I realised I had never heard of her name as I referred to the credits. Yes and I presumed her name was Nakajima Ai.

Oh she was so close to make me reconsider who my favourite female seiyuu was lol. Fortunately Kawasumi Ayako still remains my most favourite, since she was awesome to me in Crest of the Stars. That was close…

I wonder whether Ranka would have been as appealing a character she is if voiced by someone else for it was Megumi who had successfully infused Ranka with the innocent and earnest personality that we are so fond of about. The role fits her perfectly since it is a rookie seiyuu acting as an young lady who is aspiring to be a popular singer. I believe that all rookies, are eager to prove themselves, and Megumi has been able to channel her energy into bringing Ranka into life.

She will do well in her career, especially since she has proven to be a capable singer to some certain extent. I believe the only bloke who is not impressed with her singing is the P-Meister since he had stated that her voice is too deep and not to his liking. ‘I like screechy moe-filled high pitched voices better’ were his words. *shrugs* We have never agreed on most things, except for the opinion that Elhaym Van Houten of Xenogears rocks.

P.S I think Sheryl will eventually be the one for the pairing with Alto (guys are always the winners in animes) despite my equal fondness for the two ladies. If I am capable of expressing my thoughts in words, I might write a bit about this love triangle.

P.P.S I think Kara No Kyoukai has influenced me to eat Häagen-Dazs ice cream while watching anime.

P.P.P.S Why is everyone talking about the EURO 2008? Show some love for the NBA 2007 finals. It is the reunion between the LA Lakers and the Boston Celtics! A classic rivalry I say!

It offered nothing but an surreal touch. Or I could say ‘I was WTFed by it and it was great

It offered nothing but an surreal touch.

Or I could say ‘I was WTFed by it and it was great’

So allow me to express my surprise towards how the first of a series of film-length animated shows of the TYPE-MOON tale -Kara No Kyoukai- was done. Mind you if you think otherwise, because I am not very well acquainted with TYPE-MOON so I would not possibly know how it ’should’ have been done. I did not read the novel.

It did not suck. It was not stellar. But it was definitely something.

Neither am I all out to criticise nor do I have the intention to exalt it. There is only my simple observation to be offered.

You know how most animes would have an explanation of certain fighting skills and the reasons for what has occurred? Well Kara No Kyoukai -Fukan Fuukei- does very little of that and we are plunged right into the midst of everything. The first chapter of the seven is even not the beginning of the story in terms of chronological order, as we see the characters (Touko, Mikiya and Shiki) all settled down in the atmosphere and doing their stuff.

The first chapter begins with no obvious introduction to the characters. One of them, Mikiya, did nothing much as he was in a coma. In fact, the story can be summarised simply as our tsundere female protagonist slicing up ‘ghosts’ on a ceiling while she and Touko attempt to solve a mysterious case of suicides.

So here is what annoyed some people- we have no idea why Shiki has those creepy eyes that distorts her perspective and the occupations of the three main characters are not specifically stated. We do not know what is going on! Although I am sure more information can be obtained from the official website and other sites but let us focus on Fukan Fuukei itself.

Before we question why the seemingly abrupt entry into the Kara No Kyoukai universe, perhaps we ought to ponder over the intentions of the director/writer in making this the first part of the entire story. I noticed the likelihood of getting disappointed if I were to watch a certain show with certain expectations of how it would turn out to be. Because very often or not, Murphy’s Law is in play and things will not go the way we want it to be. For example, I was initially very upset at Code Geass due to my obstinate expectations of it being an epic and serious show. I was wrong, it was not an epic show but an EPIC show. (epic and EPIC are two different categories. Also, an EPIC show is not an epic show of greater magnitude.)

What I am trying to say is watching a show is like going on a tour in a foreign country and the story itself is your tour guide. Just follow the guide’s instructions and stop your persistent demands on having Chinese food when there are already plans to head to an Italian restaurant. While I can understand the frustrations of some people after viewing Fukan Fuukei, I found myself much at ease by allowing the story to guide me without asking too many questions.

Apparently it is the plan that not too many details will be revealed in the first chapter, and it is this approach that can be considered as a double-edged sword. You will either be awed by the dark world of Kara No Kyoukai or find yourself shrugging frequently.

At this point, you would have notice that I have not really covered much about Fukan Fuukei except for the fact that it is rather ‘confusing’. Well because it is ‘confusing’, I cannot possible abstract any insights from the dynamics of the characters yet. I do not know why Shiki is such a reticent character. I do not know the role of Aozaki Touko in the story yet. And I do not know the relationship between Mikiya and Shiki.

Fukan Fuukei, in my mind, is not the beginning of the Kara No Kyoukai tale. But a small glimpse into the world that has spurred me to delve deeper into it. An ominous prelude indeed.

Oh by the way. The preview of the next chapter suggests that we will be going back in time to explore the background of our female protagonist Shiki. Perhaps that will satisfy those who are still willing to stay for the ride.

—————————————————–

ID Sojourner: And now for some silly screenshots! Incoming gay picture spamming!

That day, the eroge I had pre-ordered finally arrived.

So I made my way to the store hastily.

However

Something tells me…

I am not in Akiba.

I kid not.

As fear gripped as I had no knowledge of this place.

OMG. There are others who are lost as well.

Mummy once told me not to speak to strangers… but…

I had to help them!

Must help them… oh.. nevermind…

Somehow I got in. And the place is SO creepy! So I took out a knife and struck a cool pose while advancing deeper into building. I am like in a haunted mansion!

My scalp was itchy.

My back was violated.

‘GIVE ME YOUR NEW EROGE OR ELSE!’

‘NEVER!’

OMG. Someone failed to pre-order that game and wants to rob me!

‘Uh… at least lend it to me?’

WHAT! THAT IS EVEN WORSE!

‘THEN YOU SHALL BE PUNISHED!’

Somehow, I managed to escape and revenge was on my mind.

This time, I am wearing my lucky red jacket.

Practicing on my glare. I AM GUNDAM COOL.

There is a reason why I am wearing this raincoat.

‘I see you are back. And what is with the raincoat?’

So I can do THIS!

AND TO FEEL THE MOOD OF THIS FIGHT… ALLOW ME TO OFFER THIS PIECE OF MUSIC!

Now let us proceed! This is how it is done.

First I whip it out!

Then I thrust it!

I say ‘ho!’ to you fellow sojourners of the Blue Fox Alley and I claim your attention!

In your eyes, I see a thirst in you. A thirst that cannot be satisfied with your silly groping of women. A thirst that grows while you drown yourself with ale. So perk your ears and listen up! Wake your mate with your best punch! Because when my eloquent P-Meister and I have a lyrical tingle to share with you all, it is something that no man ought to miss.

So what do you think defines a great tale? Is it a great struggle between the forces of light and darkness? An elegy of the clash of two great kingdoms and a forbidden love caught in the midst of it? Here at the Blue Fox Alley, we shall unravel the secret of creating the greatest fantasy story evar!

Here is how the first stroke of the harp goes…

.The world in the story must have an ancient evil god that threatens the world with the possibility of TOTAL destruction.

.A long time ago, a champion vanquished the evil god and sealed him away in a castle. However with the passing of time, the seal on the evil weakens and he is free once more!

.A hero is chosen by a kingdom, with great GDP and low inflation, to defeat the evil god.

.Hero must have romance with the kingdom’s princess.

.Hero will not know of princess’ real identity while she mingles with him initially. But she will be forced to reveal it in order to help the hero from a dilemma! The SHOCKU!

.Hero must use a sword.

.Hero must have sword techniques like Whirlwind Blade Technique or Fire Slash or Hundred Blades.

.There be magic and elements to make the story cool.

.The hero will embark on a journey with a group of comrades. An archer, a mage and a rouge are a MUST.

.Hero will have an evil elder brother who is always in his way. And the evil elder brother must always wear black and have a stupid smirk on his super bishie face so fans will want to have his babies.

.Evil elder brother turns out to be actually a GOOD GUY and all his evil deeds were for the sake of ‘protecting his brother’. Excellent plot twist deserving of praises that shall last for an eternity.

.Hero must have a rival who will save him when faced with the great danger because ‘only he is allowed to defeat the hero’.

.Have dragons in the story.

.Have +5 enchanted weapons.

.There will be an episode at the beach.

.A wise old man will guide the hero. His name will probably be Gendou.com Gendoulf.

.There will be the obligatory betrayal scene. But the spy in the group will eventually become the hero’s real friend and get him out of the shit which he had caused in the first place. Wonderful friendship in play and the hero will be too stupid to recall that it was the ex-spy who had given him so much trouble initially.

.Wise old man Gendoulf will sacrifice his life to save the hero when a tough boss appears. With the loss of his mentor, the hero lvls up turns his anguish into strength and wins the tough boss.

.Dying, Gendoulf entrusts his powerful sword, Excharibaa, to the hero. And the hero will scream ‘I WILL INHERIT YOUR WILL!!!’

.Hero gets final weapon of the story and forgets about Excharibaa.

.Princess is kidnapped by the Dark Champion of the evil god.

.Dark Champion is actually the hero’s father and the fallen hero who once defeated the evil god. The SHOCKU and the DRAMA. Excellent plot twist.

.Hero refuses to fight his father but ends up doing so anyway.

.Final boss Evil god resides in a castle with dark clouds looming over it.

.Hero defeats the evil god with the help of his father who becomes GOOD again. Peace is restored once again.

.Oh yeah. The hero must have a hearty comrade who is planning to get married when he returns to his hometown. Dies in battle after charging into battle like Leeroy Jenkins. Very sad and dramatic because he was supposed to get married. Excellent drama.

.A bad plot hole which suggests that the animated version of the story could have just been 20 episodes instead of 54 episodes. But people still like it because the evil elder brother is SOOOO cool. So the glaring flaws are pardoned because the fans prefer to talk about their favourite characters.

I think the P-Meister and I are on our way towards creating the greatest tale ever told!!! This, my friend, is the -FINALE OF FANTASY PROJECT-. Stay tuned for more updates!
