from Last.fm

True grindcore from Tampa, Florida heavily influenced by the style of old school grindcore pioneered by bands like Napalm Death, Assuck, Discordance Axis and 324 during the 80s and 90s. Cellgraft began in late 2008 and acquired it’s name from the 25 second Insect Warfare song of the same name. Material is mostly centered around the downfall of civilization through manipulation, technological corruption and the ignorance of man.

This morning Clay Doran (Warehouse 8B) and I joined Joey Marchy (Urban Jacksonville), Tony Allegretti (The Urban Core), and Jonathan Bennett (Jacksonville.com) on Urban Jacksonville Weekly to talk about our spaces. Read the preview here.

You can listen to the conversation on Urban Jacksonville or subscribe to the podcast on iTunes.

It was pretty cool being in the room with Clay and talking about all the cool stuff we are doing and the even cooler stuff we envision for the future. Suffice it to say, there will be some heavy collaborations between The Devil’s Playground and Warehouse 8B that you won’t want to miss!

Be sure to check back from time to time for updates, upcoming events and more. Follow Unit 6 Productions on Twitter as well for the most up-to-date info.

The Eight

I picked up this book at Eloor Library, because the blurb on the cover stated Readers thrilled by The DaVinci Code will relish the multi-layered secrets of The Eight. The blurb was sooo right, because I just loved this book.

It is very difficult to describe this book in a nutshell, but I will give it a go anyway. The story is about a magnificent chess set called the Montglane Service. Hidden in it is a secret formula that can provide unlimited powers to the person who uncovers the secret.

The story is set in two time frames—1972, and at the time of the French Revolution, during the Terror, in 1790 and beyond.

The story is about a race by two different sides that have deliberately taken on identities as the Black and White “teams” in chess, to collect the pieces of the Montglane Service that were scattered, as a precautionary measure during the French Revolution. Murders occur in both periods during this struggle for obtaining a means to what is thought to be unlimited power.

The adventure in the book is top-notch. There are car chases, exotic locations, and bad guys to outwit. However, there are also sections of the book that made me close the book and reflect on what I was reading. This is not just a time-pass thriller. There is loads of information on alchemy, physics, chess, mathematics, history, and a heavy dose of mysticism. It is quite apparent that a lot of research has gone into the writing of this book.

The parts I loved best were all the chess manoeuvrings. I also really loved the fact that the whole novel is structured like a giant chess game. You have one of the main characters Catherine Velis starting out as a pawn, and slowly gaining energy and strength as she moves across the board to replace the Black Queen. She eventually becomes the Black Queen and checks the White King. Really superb stuff! It is also real fun to try and guess who is playing which part in the chess game.

OK, from the above para you would have guessed that only chess-lovers can enjoy this book. That’s true to a certain extent. You could enjoy this book merely as an adventure story even if you do not enjoy / know chess. But, if you like chess, you will truly love and appreciate this book, and understand all the nuances.

By no means is this a perfect book. There were a couple of minor, irritating flaws. Katherine Neville’s habit of injecting a phrase like little did she know that her actions would blah, blah, blah in order to keep the reader informed of events unfolding was downright irritating.

There were also a bit too many (almost gratuitous) actual historical characters moving in and out of the plot. Talleyrand, Catherine the Great, Napoleon, Robespierre, Voltaire, William Blake, William Wordsorth, and tons more personalities populate the book. Of these, only Talleyrand, Catherine the Great, and Napoleon actually move the story forward. The rest were not really required.

There was also one more plot-inconsistency, however, I don’t want to blog about it and give the plot away here.

But at the end of the day, I just re-iterate what the blurb on the book cover said – If you have read The DaVinci Code and enjoyed it then you will probably find this book enjoyable also. One caveat- this is not as easy a read as DaVinci code.

After reading this book, I kept having vivid mental images of beautiful chess pieces, so I just had to search for some beautiful chess imagery to share here…

“The first thing a principle does is to kill somebody,” said Lord Peter Whimsey, the aristocrat-dete

“The first thing a principle does is to kill somebody,” said Lord Peter Whimsey, the aristocrat-detective, the invention of Dorothy L. Sayers, speaking in one of her best novels, Gaudy Nights. Confessing my own limitations, I am here bound to report another Whimsey quote, in the same book (both courtesy of Wikiquotes, although I did read Gaudy Nights). There Whimsey said, “The facility for quotation covers the absence of original thought.” To which I might add, by way of excuse, that if wishes were horses, beggars would ride. Witty things always occur to me hours after the occasion for using them is past. Thus I better quickly marshal another quote to set the stage here, that by the most famous French diplomat ever, Charles-Maurice Talleyrand, who said: “Above all, no zeal.”—Which reminds me that he had the bad fortune to live with an even greater man always around, Napoleon. Napoleon once supposedly said to Talleyrand (and this sort of thing does build humility): “Look, you’re shit in a silk stocking.” I suppose I should render that more politely in French: “Ah, tenez, vous êtes de la merde dans un bas de soie.” Which reminds me of something else—of reading certain books in youth—I remember especially A Thousand and One Nights—in which, back in those days, the sexually explicit passages would be rendered in Italian! Groan! How that used to bug me. And my parents, speaking Hungarian, would switch to German when they didn’t wish us to understand what they were saying. But I’m now really wandering from the subject. Let’s get back to boredom.

Here I simply wish to emphasize that if the faculties of Man are single—expressing themselves in multiple modalities, each of those modalities has a boundary or limit. We benefit from them only when they are used in harmony. This is best illustrated with the intellect, the chief limit of which is also its greatest power. It can delimit any aspect of reality by separating it into a concept. This greatly increases our power of understanding, but only up to a limit. Hence Whimsey is correct. Principles, which are concepts dressed as absolutes, will kill people if other modes of perception are not permitted to come to bear. Hence also Talleyrand was nothing if not wise when counseling that zeal must be avoided. By curbing zeal, we give our other modes of being scope to enlarge our sense of the reality or action we are pondering.

One of the maddening but, in the long haul, most beneficial experiences we can gain by patrolling the border zone is that absolute certainties are unachievable. Wisdom is one of those great values that simply don’t lend themselves to exploitation. You can’t beat someone over the head with it, you can’t reduce it to a slogan, you can’t turn wisdom into money, power, or fame. If fame comes, it comes after you’ve departed. Conversely, any wisdom offered for sale or as the sure thing, you can’t miss, is certain to be counterfeit. Quotes are on my mind today, so let me end with one. Wisdom? Well….

So high, you can’t get over it.
So low, you can’t get under it.
So wide, you can’t get around it.
You gotta come in by the door.
