See that sorta lime-green screen there? Today, coworker Shane Anthony pulled that out of a computer

See that sorta lime-green screen there? Today, coworker Shane Anthony pulled that out of a computer case shoved beneath one of the many empty desks in our bureau.

You probably don’t recognize it, but that, my friends, is a laptop computer. A Tandy 1100FD. It goes back to the early 90s or so, though you’ll notice a 1989 load date in one of the photos above.

This little machine provided a good 15 minutes of solid, nostalgic entertainment during a short break at work today. The Tandy didn’t appear to have any functionality beyond word processing capabilities. It had a couple basic programs but required one insert a floppy disk for them to work.

Its computer case included a telephone cord that supposedly gave it access to……wait for it……wait for it……..the INTERNET! Apparently, the Tandy also could connect to a cellular line, though we weren’t what kind of cell phone. One of those big suckers you stored in your car?

Shane there took a photo of our new friend, Tandy, with his iPhone, which is hilarious if you think about it.

Hard to believe anyone actually used the Tandy to file stories from the field.

One of the Tandy’s great features, though, was its keyboard, which is incredibly responsive to the touch of your fingers. No stickiness whatsoever. It’s probably the best keyboard I’ve ever used.

They sure don’t make them like they used to. And when it comes to the Tandy, they don’t make them at all.

The Butchertown Neighborhood Association has sent out an e-mail blasting Metro Council President David Tandy for supporting a resolution that asks JBS to keep its meat processing plant in Butchertown. Tandy has supported moving the plant. I talked to him about this conflict. Here’s the report from WFPL:

The Louisville Metro Council could take action during its meeting Thursday to encourage the JBS company to keep its controversial meat processing plant in its current location.

Many residents of the Butchertown neighborhood have complained about the noise and odor generated by the plant. The council will vote on a non-binding resolution that asks JBS to keep the plant and its 13-hundred jobs in the neighborhood.

The resolution has bipartisan support, perhaps most notably from Council President David Tandy, who has been working with the company to look for a new site in Jefferson County. Tandy says he’s still interested in seeing the plant move, but jobs take top priority. If the plant can’t be relocated, Tandy says it could be upgraded to address Butchertown residents’ concerns.

“There’s language in there that wants them to stay in that location. My position has always been: I want to make sure those jobs stay here in Jefferson County. If they say in that current location, then we need to make sure the residents in that area, it creates a win-win for everyone,” he says. ”You can create meat processing facilities that aren’t like your grandfather’s meat processing facilities, where those facilities can peacefully coexist in a residential neighborhood.”

Tandy says if the plant cannot be moved elsewhere in the county, he would like JBS to make upgrades to make the plant quieter and cleaner.

A free dental day will be held Wednesday in Southington as a part of the local dentist association’s continued initiative to help uninsured residents maintain good oral health.

The free dental days have been held about once a month since May when Dr. Ted Zdeblick officially revived the program.

Zdeblick had originally started holding free dental days 10 years ago when Connecticut experienced its last recession. His residency at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford made him more aware of the fact that there was a need for this type of work.

As the countdown to Downsizing 2009 continues, tempers are flaring and I have been both privy to much back-stabbing and the beneficiary of mucho sucking up. It hasn’t been pretty, but good goddamn it has been extremely entertaining.

As witnessed at yesterday’s lunch with Carly, Diane, Melina, Tandy, and the diminutive Tremulous Cameo.

“Eric told me that if I get cut, I’ll be able to get Section 8 housing which is really cheap and they can’t kick me and the baby out and stuff ’cause I’m a mom with no job so then he can move in with us and we can save money for a house of our own,” Tandy rambled on between bites of her fully loaded cheesy curly fries. “Which would be good ’cause then we can get the high speed internet. Eric likes that to play World of Warcraft.”

I bit my tongue at the teen welfare queen’s total lack of ethics.

Tremulous Cameo, however, did not.

“You are setting a very bad example for your daughter, Tandy,” the Korean dwarf said, jabbing the air with an impeccably manicured Vienna sausage index finger. “Do you want her grow up to think that it is society’s responsibility to take care of her because she makes poor choices?”

Tandy stared at Cameo with her big, dumb Bambi eyes, her face conveying no sense of comprehension at all.

“You need to have some self respect, girl!” Tremulous C was on a roll now. She had gotten up on her knees on her chair and was leaning across the table on her ill-proportioned elbows, giving it to Tandy straight — no chaser. “Your daughter is going to think ‘Why should I listen to my mama? She always takes the easy way out’ and once that happens, she’s gonna wind up like you: pregnant, stupid, and no prospects.”

Ouch.

Speech over, Tremulous C manuevered her way back to a sitting position and used her freaky T-Rex arms to grab her diet soda and take a long swig. “You know what you need to do?” she asked.

Tandy shook her head, never taking her eyes off the diminutive orator.

“You need to go to church. You had a baby out of wedlock and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ doesn’t like that.”

Carly and I exchanged one of our knowing glances. This one said “Know what else our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ doesn’t like? Preachers who kill their hookers.”

“Yeah, well I don’t like to go to church,” Tandy said in her airy-fairy off the cuff manner, “and I don’t think Jesus likes you living with Joe and having sex if you’re not married and that’s worse than me ’cause you do go to church…”

Point and match.

Well played, welfare queen, well played.

8664 Co-Founder Tyler Allen is running for Mayor of Louisville.

So far, the candidates are:

Democrats:

Tyler Allen

Metro Council President David Tandy

Metro Councilman Jim King

Businessman Greg Fischer

West Louisville resident Connie Marshall

Republicans:

Developer/Activist Chris Thieneman

Independent:

Coffee shop owner, professor Nimbus Couzin

Still Rumored:

Republican Metro Councilman Hal Heiner – a decision is coming soon.

Republican Metro Councilman Doug Hawkins – this is unlikely.

The Democratic primary is close to–or has reached–a critical mass. It’s likely now that candidates will begin splitting certain votes. For example, progressives may be torn between Fischer and Allen. There’s no runoff, so it’s possible the winning candidate will have only 26% of the vote.

A few people have asked why The Edit hasn’t posted any speculation about the mayoral race rece

A few people have asked why The Edit hasn’t posted any speculation about the mayoral race recently. Well, we don’t want to mislead anyone. But, with another candidate in the Mayor’s race, we’ll offer this.

Jim King made his announcement today with a PR firm (Tandem) behind him. He had a video crew record my interview with him and he’s clearly ready to sink a lot of money into this campaign.

Greg Fischer and David Tandy do not have as slick of campaigns as King…yet, but King’s entrance could put everyone into high gear for fundraising early on.

On the Republican side, Steve Pence is still an option, and Dan Seum said Doug Hawkins could fulfill his promise to run in State Sen. Seum’s steed. Hawkins would have to work hard to get the support he needs, and Pence may not want to give up his successful current career to run for a municipal office.

The GOP could also be working on choosing a candidate behind the scenes. With at least three Democrats battling it out in a primary, a unified Republican front could launch after Labor Day and smoothly sail until the general election campaign begins. This move would also save the Republican candidate significant energy and money by preventing a high-profile primary. It’s a smart political move, but it’s also risky; the public won’t have the chance to weed out a candidate they don’t like, and instead of losing a primary early on, the candidate loses the election much later.

However…The Republican candidate would have to compete with the media attention given to the contested Democratic primary.

It could be argued that the early start to the campaign will instill a fatigue in voters, and everyone will be tired of hearing about the candidates by the time the election comes around. I think the idea of voter fatigue is something that gets a lot of coverage, but doesn’t really exist.

C.D. Kaplan (who appears on our sister station WFPK every week) has a blog post up criticizing city

C.D. Kaplan (who appears on our sister station WFPK every week) has a blog post up criticizing city officials and the Cordish Company for the sports bar project in 4th Street Live.

Cordish got a forgivable loan to renovate a bowling alley and isn’t keen on saying how the money was spent. A group of city officials–including Metro Council President and Mayoral Candidate David Tandy–went to Cordish’s Baltimore headquarters to investigate, and came up with even more secrets. (Kaplan says the trip was on the taxpayer’s dime, but Tandy’s assistant told me the President paid for his own ticket. I’m not sure about the others).

This part of Kaplan’s post jumped out at me:

…the five — Mike Norman, Bruce Traughber, David Morris, Ellis Shipley and mayoral wannabe David Tandy — signed away any power they might have had . . . to do anything whatsoever. They put their John Hancocks on an airtight confidentiality agreement that includes indemnification clauses and penalty clauses and a draft of how Mike Norman’s final report to Abramson should read.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, they agreed that the information was not subject to the state’s Open Records Laws.

That is not a typo. Before they even got to look at the scraps of “information” that Cordish revealed as a “courtesy,” the Five Stooges had to agree on what and how they would report to our mayor. And that nobody could demand to see the results of the “audit.” Such as they are. Not even the mayor. Nor we the lenders.

We’ve been saying this for months. Privatization frequently removes from government-funded projects the oversight mechanisms such as regulation, open records laws and even certain Constitutional protections for workers. It can also save tons of money, so there’s not usually much argument (or need for argument) about these types of projects until something like this Cordish debacle comes up.

There’s talk of Council legislation that will require the records of city-funded projects to be open. With this situation fresh in many Council member’s minds, I imagine that the resolution will be fairly popular.

Here’s Metro Councilman Jim King’s statement on running in Abramson’s stead. Stephanie caught up with Council President David Tandy earlier today:

“I would like to congratulate Governor Steve Beshear for selecting one of America’s outstanding leaders, Mayor Jerry Abramson, to join his ticket for the 2011 Governor’s election. Whoever succeeds Mayor Abramson as the next Mayor of Louisville has large shoes to fill. He has earned our respect and gratitude for his commitment to Louisville these last 25 years.

Over the past few weeks, as it grew increasingly clear that Mayor Abramson would be joining Governor Steve Beshear’s ticket, I have been encouraged by family, friends and respected leaders in our community to seriously consider running for Mayor in 2010.

Today is not the time for an announcement about my own political future, but it is certainly the time for our community to begin a discussion about how we move Louisville forward, particularly in these tough economic times. Now is also the beginning of what should be a great debate about what type of leader can best manage one of America’s largest cities and provide the vision for a Greater Louisville.

I look forward to participating in that debate and expect to make an announcement about my plans in the coming weeks.”

Did you watch the All-Star game on TV on Tuesday? Did you notice the softball field next to the stad

Did you watch the All-Star game on TV on Tuesday? Did you notice the softball field next to the stadium? Well, that was originally supposed to be a giant, multi-purpose entertainment and business complex called Ballpark Village. It was to be developed by the Baltimore-based Cordish Company, which is also behind 4th Street Live and Center City (when it happens).

Cordish isn’t solely, or even chiefly, responsible for Ballpark Village’s perpetual delay. But, the company’s involvement in the project provides a good excuse to bring up this hours-old news item. Metro Council President David Tandy is asking for some answers from Cordish. Tandy wants Cordish to say how it spent $950,000 on renovations to a bowling alley in 4th Street Live.

He writes:

While I believe that Fourth Street Live has been a successful venture for our community it is important for the Cordish Company, and for that matter any other company or entity that receives public funds to clearly demonstrate how taxpayer dollars are being used. There is serious public concern over the use of the $950,000 loan that funded the renovation of this recent project.

Development isn’t really something governments do themselves, so parternships with private entities are the norm. But this does raise questions of trust, and how much control governments should be willing to give up. How much control governments should have is an entirely different debate.

The enormous task of setting smart grid standards has been at the top of the industry’s list f

The enormous task of setting smart grid standards has been at the top of the industry’s list for months. Now there’s a similar type of effort underway for data specifically related to monitoring solar. An industry group dubbed the SunSpec Alliance will officially launch on Tuesday at the Intersolar North America conference, where it will detail its plan to set standards for representing basic solar information, such as current, voltage and temperature, starting with the Modbus protocol for devices such as inverters, meters and other measurement devices.

The new group is made up of firms particularly interested in managing and monitoring solar data. It includes renewable energy-monitoring company Fat Spaniel; inverter manufacturer SMA; solar project developer Nautilus Solar Energy; Veris Industries, which makes energy and environmental sensors; and Campbell Scientific, which makes monitoring and measurement instruments.

The problem the group hopes to fix is that most renewable energy-monitoring products collect the same information, but report it in different ways. The networks are custom-engineered, which is fine if customers are building a large, centralized plant, but a major hassle if they’ve got different-sized plants scattered all over the place, said Tom Tansy, vice president of marketing for Fat Spaniel. According to him, the lack of standards sometimes leads to project delays as –- just as customers are ready to flip the switch –- tests make it clear that some of the equipment may not work well together. “The outcry among customers has been pretty loud,” he said.

While many standardization efforts are already underway, notably the NIST’s smart grid effort, so far they’ve been largely focused on the utility industry, said Tansy. The SunSpec Alliance, on the other hand, is focusing on open standards targeted specifically at renewable energy components in an effort to help them interact with IT systems. Tansy says the group plans to participate in the smart-grid standards process at the federal level and that “the time was right to put our two cents in.”

It makes sense for companies with a stake in the industry to get involved in the discussion. Standards can effectively choose winners and losers, as some technologies aren’t compatible with the standards that end up being selected. “That’s a risk,” Tansy said, adding that different potential standards ultimately have to compete on their merits. “There’s always a risk that once you start standardization, someone’s going to get left behind and we think that’s healthy [to have a standardized base of hardware].”

The initial SunSpec effort shouldn’t stir up too much controversy, though, as almost everyone already supports Modbus, Tandy said. “We’re going for a fairly low common denominator, where someone doesn’t have to do much except have their information come out in a certain way,” he said.

One reason to develop open standards and make partners could also be to help position companies to get part of the stimulus and other government funding. Fat Spaniel could be following this trend with this SunSpec alliance, in addition to its other recent solar partnerships with Regen Energy, Satel Spain and Meteotest.

Tandy said the company is indeed positioning itself for stimulus money, but that it’s mainly taking these steps to build a solid business model and be able to offer more services. Fat Spaniel is hoping to tap into stimulus money for an initiative — in conjunction with the University of California at Berkeley — to provide solar monitoring for California schools, and also is going after funding for a couple of R&D projects, he said.

I just bought myself a ’state of the art’ computerized, direct entry scanner: the Realistic PRO-2010 for the staggering price of 2 euros

The scanner was on sale on a street sale. It’s a bit dirty and the antenna is missing. But for 2 euros I’m not complaining. I’ve tuned it to 169.7500, which is the national emergency text-messaging frequency in the Netherlands, and reception is quite clear, even without an antenna! The volume knop is a bit tricky though, when I turn it the volume goes from soft to strong with nothing in between. The potmeter will need some cleaning…

The PRO-2010 was produced in the late 1980’s. It has 20 memory channels and 1 search limit memory. It’s known to be a cheaply build rig with marginal reception qualities.

Every computer geek has a story about the day he or she fell in love with computers, myself included

Every computer geek has a story about the day he or she fell in love with computers, myself included. For the most part of my grade school life, the closest thing to a computer my family owned was the electric typewriter in my mom’s office. I had yet to reach 6th grade, where I would eventually be introduced to the fantastic Apple II personal computer. In fact, the word “computer” meant nothing to me. But that would all change in the summer of 1994.

My kindergarden teacher had remained a close friend of the family. When it was time for her to retire her old reliable computer she offered it to my family. The computer in question was the modest Tandy 1000 produced by Radio Shack in 1984. When my dad brought it home we had nowhere to put it. We didn’t have a computer room and we certainly didn’t have a computer desk. It finally found a home on the dining room table. Parked right next to it was the monstrous commercial microwave that I’m sure emitted radiation to my cat Fluffy who was always perched on top, but that’s another story.

The moment I flipped the Tandy’s switch and saw the startup screen I was hooked. I only remember having 2 applications on that computer. One was a spreadsheet program, much like a featureless version of Microsoft Excel. The other was a game heavily laced with Radio Shack propaganda. In the game you would play a PC Technician and visit neighborhood businesses and they would tell you what computer services they needed. You would then walk to the local Radio Shack, buy the parts, and go back and install them for your customer. I think I played that game everyday for at least a month. My interest in computers had thus begun, and I quickly upgraded to a more powerful computer and haven’t stopped upgrading since. Most people have never heard of the Tandy line of computers, but to me, the Tandy 1000 will forever be a fond memory of mine, marking the day I fell in love with the computer.

Me lembro muito bem.

Era Super Mário World, Donkey Kong, Bomber Man, Need for Speed…meu melhor presente de aniversário?

Ele pensou que ía me enganar e me ver torcendo o nariz ao sentir aquele gosto horrível… E pro meu alívio me recusei.

A fase do parque, CLASSIC!

It has been a while since I have been able to post. There are so many changes coming up and Tim and I have been very active getting our house ready to sell that Dez has had to take on alot of Sugar Snap lately. I am happy to say that while there is many things coming down the pipe, I am back in full swing and so ready to explore all of what Orlando has to offer. These are a few pictures that were taken while we were visiting. I have already made a few new friends there. Our move is offiicial in June. Look for more things coming from Sugar Snap Orlando!

I have been waiting for months for this show! Although, I think that I prefer the British version (Ladette to Lady). I was so sad when L2L ended. I only got to see season 3. If anyone can find the first 2 seasons for me, I promise to reward you handsomely!!

Anyhow, the show is produced by Donald Trump (hence Tara Conner as the host) and it was fairly entertaining. These girls are crazy!! I think that they should lock Chris Brown up in a room with them. Yah. Let’s see him beat on some girls then. They would kill that fool in about 2.34 seconds. Especially Margie. That girl is scary… and it was funny when Headmistress Harbord and Mrs. Schrager told her that everyone thought so.

Some of you may be thinking that I am kind of sad for watching this show in the first place (and perhaps you are right). And I am totally blaming the gaming industry for this one! After beating Build-a-Lot in… hmm… a day… I had the following thoughts: Why the freak am I playing Build-a-Lot and what happened to all of the good games?!?!?! I mean, no offense to Hipsoft. They are good at what they do; they produce some decent strategy games.

But where is everyone else?? What happened to those games which blew you away?? If one does not come out soon, I may have to go dig out Wolfenstein 3D or Myst and my freakin Tandy computer. >:| I cannot think of any game which has really captivated me lately… Okay, Fable II, Assassin’s Creed, and Little Big Planet are really nice. And Professor Layton looks good, but I have not tried it yet. But what I wouldn’t do for another Perfect Dark, Baldur’s Gate II, or even Syberia… Any recommendations? Maybe I will get this 9-year old kid to write me some gaming gold.
