When Alex Fong and Stephy Tang’s names are both on one song, you can be certain that there is another duet coming your way! This song literally translating to Seven Years, probably displaying their 7 years relationship or whatever. Anyways, this is another good duet song from them (their duets are pretty famous in Hong Kong  and in other areas), and adds to their duet collection. I know… why was Eddie there? Well, he killed it anyway. Yay, Eddie. We so proud of you!

Got really busy this past few weeks and I never got the chance to visit my blog, geezus. This is one overdue item, but still Im very eggsighted to share that our team won four awards at the Quill’s this year – one big hoorah! Im really sooper happy too that 3 of those were my campaigns – well, not just mine alone, but my team’s . Yehehey! Great job everyone. My work/job can really get annoying and soooo tiring (almost everytime, hahaha!) but at the end of the day, with stuffs like this, everything becomes so worth it. And yes, once again we brought the ham home!

Coalesce has been one of those bands that I’ve listened to for years, but all that listening has been via one album that I can’t get tired of:  Functioning On Impatience. They have a decent discography, but I just haven’t been able to move on from that album.  Same thing with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.  Let Love In is one of those albums that hit my ears at just the right time in my life (going into a serious relationship and then getting dumped fucking hard), so it held some precedence in my life for quite some time.  Not until two weeks back or so was I able to jump ship with Murder Ballads.  Holy shit… Nick Cave is a storyteller to say the least.  That man has the ability to weave words with music and it creeps under my skin.  Like telling ghost stories and giving yourself goosebumps, that’s what Murder Ballads has been doing for me.  Let’s bring this around full-circle though.

Coalesce has the OXEP streaming from lambgoat (a great news source on heavier music, but sometimes you gotta sift through garbage soda-drinker bands to find the real meat).  It’s their new EP, which is following up the recent OX full-length that I’ve only put to my ears once – earlier today – and it jammed along just fine.  I gave the EP a run through twice and it seems like I may be making the move onto a new album finally.  The stream is only up for a short while, so don’t be lazy about it because you gotta do this “thing” for a friend, when we all know you’re just gonna get high and whack-it.  It’s obvious.

I found this in a book of illustrations at my buddies place today.  Kris went and saw Where The Wild Things Are at IMAX and apparently got a lot of free swag.  Skinner Davis is the man with the skills here and the work he has up on his site gave me a decent lot of eye-boners.  I’ve always dug bright colors in art, especially neon, dayglo, blacklight bullshit (beginning of Belly is the bees-tits, not knees) so it makes sense why I’d watch Busta Rhymes video for Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See countless times in middle school.  I doubt it had anything to do with the big, busty, bouncy, Black ladies though.  Oh Pam Grier, why won’t you return any of the imaginary phone calls I make to you in my mind.  She’s such a tease.

Shit son, music and art all in one swing.  I’d call that a God damn success in culture if you ask me.  Don’t you feel better about yourself now?  You can pour out all that Tang you’ve been drinking and stop munching on partially cooked fish sticks.  Even though you say, “I don’t mind that it’s cold in the middle,” we all know you’re full of shit.  It’s kinda sad.  You needa’ head down to the corner store and pick yourself up a 40 of Steele Reserve, OJ, and peanut M&M’s.  Now that’s a meal for refined people, which you can now classify yourself into.  Just find a nice stoop to post up on and share what you learned with a stranger or two.  Hell, offer them some of your drink too.  I don’t know anyone that dislikes a good ol’ Brass Monkey.  Except maybe Canadians; they only like the band Rush.

How “sunny came home” won best song of the year is beyond me?

The first time I did this was in a 7X7 dormitory room of mine far away from home. Food was good there no doubt. But I yearned for fresh tang in my meals. One of my co-workers, who also stayed on campus, had bought lemons to take home. He asked if I want a few. I told him sure I’ll pickle them. He gave me the lot asked me what else I need for making pickles. We agreed on an arrangement where we split responsibilities to make pickles and enjoy them too.

I had few lemons remaining with me and when I got no one to take them I made this stock pickle and it was with ginger and it was a super-duper hit on campus. This pickle created a homely atmosphere away from home to many of us.

Lemon pickle – simply classic

(For lime or lemons)

For pickling 500 grams of lemon you’ll require 750 grams of lemons

For the stock pickle you’ll need:

Lemons 750 grams

Salt – about 10 Tbsps

Red Chilly powder – 6 Tbsps heaped

Turmeric powder – 4 Tbsps heaped

One clean wide-mouthed bottle with a well-fitting cap.

A wide glass bowl will be ideal to make this, next in order of preference can be given to a plastic bowl (food grade) and only next option is a stainless steel bowl.

A lemon press, one other container to press the lemon juice into.

Do not store pickles in plastic. Glass bottles or ceramic jars are always the best.

Method:

Clean the lemons thoroughly and wipe them, or else lay them on an absorbent cloth. Caution must be taken not to soak lemons in water for long; this will cause the loss of aromatic oils.

Cut the lemons, for the pickle 500 grams. If lemons are small then make only quarters. If lemons are large make 8 pieces from every lemon. Make halves, then quarters and halves of the quarters. This is an ideal size for serving.

Make halves of the remaining 250 grams of lemons.

Collect the juice of halved lemons in a container with a teaspoon of salt.

In  a wide bowl combine the lemon pieces with turmeric, red chilli powder, and salt.

After thorough mixing transfer the contents into the jar. Pour the pressed lemon juice on top of it. Close the jar and leave it in a cool dark place.

After a day use a dry ladle and stir the pickle in the jar. This day one can check the sharpness and the chilly of the pickle and adjust it according one’s taste. It can be corrected accordingly.

To make the pickle more sour or tangy add more lemon juice, and salt must be added along with it.

In case of chilly powder in it then add to it lemons and lemon juice and salt to even it out.

Store in a dark well ventilated clean spot.

This can be refrigerated too.

It is ready to be used in a week’s time.

If one finds it too sour or sharp then add about a table-spoon of fenugreek seeds, stir well with a dry ladle and let it sit for a week.

This like I‘ve said before is a classic pickle that can be had like this plain by itself and can also be used as a stock.

For more variety and spice

Fine strips or pieces of ginger, bitter gourd, carrots green chilies can be added to the stock few days before consumption. This pickle must be refrigerated.

A tempering made of mustard, asafoetida and curry leaves in oil of your choice can be mixed with it.

Do this in small batches, like for one round of the service bowl, else the oil in tempering and the lemon aroma splits and the pickle does not smell well after few days.

I wish I could post the album, it’s immaculate. Bong, bong.

His stomach is satisfied, but his body is injured: The ruler may then be richer, but his state is destroyed.” – Taizong

The Tang dynasty far surpassed every other in almost all fields, including culture, economy, agriculture and transportation. Music, the art of dance, calligraphy, painting, visual arts, architecture, metal processing, ceramic manufacturing, textile design, printing, brewery, tea culture… everything in the Tang Dynasty had reached a pinnacle and gained such diversity that later periods could only be reflections. All of this was owed to a great emperor: Taizong, the sovereign ancestor.

He ruled from 626 until 649, and was one of the most excellent emperors in China’s long history; until this day he is being honored for his erudition and statesmanship. Skilled in the classics of Confucius teachings and an excellent scholar and master of calligraphy, he appointed able ministers, kept close relationships with his advisors, took heed to criticisms, and lived a frugal life. His governance was deemed the Confucian ideal. Through his noble character and clear intellect, China occupied the position of a dominant world power.

While other nations suffered from chaos, division and corruption, the people who lived under the governance of Taizong lived in harmony and prosperity. The good reputation of the Tang Dynasty even reached overseas, so that almost all countries in the world heard about it. Later the word “Tang” became a synonym for China. Even today, overseas Chinese call themselves “Tang-people” and a Chinese neighborhood is called “City of the Tang-people.” The Chinese simply can not forget their pride for this prosperous time.

Openness to the world was also an important aspect of this period. Buddhism spread far and wide, many pilgrimages to India took place, and numerous sutras were translated into Chinese. While the religion became extinct in India, it flourished in China. Confucianism and Taoism were also extensively practiced, and numerous foreigners also lived in China during this remarkable dynasty.

I know there are much more pressing issues to spend my energy thinking about, but over the years I have put a good deal of thought into a couple of different food products that never cease to puzzle me…and they just happen to both be orange. Velveeta and Tang.

What the hell is velveeta anyway? Is it an actual food product, a petroleum bi-product from industrial production or some other form of matter yet to be classified? It’s list of ingredients includes cheese, but I don’t think this product behaves much like real cheese…at least it doesn’t trigger my lactose intollerance and send me running to the bathroom doubled over with cramps, although by all measures it absolultely should. Velveeta was a staple in our house growing up. My mother built our entire collection of Legos by clipping the coupons from velveeta packages and sending them in for free Legos. Thanks to velveeta, stray legos were all over our house and, despite the daily pain and suffering from stepping on the sharp little buggers, my mother continued to feed us velveeta and get us free legos. But the mental image I have of my parents eating a sandwich adorned with a thick slice of velveeta causes a gag reflex so powerful in me that I can scarcely write this blog without losing my breakfast. Still, nothing quite melts like velveeta and there are certain recipes from Mom that are just not the same when prepared with real cheese. Velveeta and rotel queso dip is an easy and popular addition to any party spread. And a grilled velveeta sandwich with sliced tomatoes takes me back to lazy summer afternoons of my childhood, when the cares of adult life seemed so remote and meaningless. Some food products just transport you and for me, velveeta is a time machine.

So, what exactly is velveeta? How would you classify this product? Is it an actual food product that might play a starring role on your dinner table? Would you place a block of velveeta on a cheese platter? Or is it a condiment, only to be mixed with other things? And why does it have to be that almost neon orange color?

Tang is another neon orange item that wisks me right back to the 70’s. In 1969 when Appolo 11 made its historic moon landing, we were poised in front of the TV with huge glasses of tang. My brother and I were 7 years old and we totally bought into the Tang marketing concept that it was the drink of astronauts. I imaged these guys bounding through the Sea of Tranquility with big glasses of ice cold tang. We drank tang every single day. My mother mixed it with instant iced tea, another flavor combo that causes an immeidate gag reflex. I have not seen tang on the grocery store shelf in my adult life. Is this pioneer of the powdered drink movement still available? And more importantly, was I just a naive idealist to think that astronauts really drank this orange sugar-water?

Food triggers strong and vivid emotional memories for all of us, that is certain. I’m sure there must be some food product you might be embarrassed to admit sits in your pantry or fridge right now, just for the memories it conjures. Am I right? I am, aren’t I?
