It’s very interesting, and puts a new perspective on the diet/life style of Western society. The language used is very simple, and easy to understand, and the concepts make perfect sense when you really think about them.
Reid is one of a few westerns who has penetrated in the Taoist’s practices. Reid has an amazing writing style and can relate very complex concepts without dumbing them down. And for those who need more validation about the validity of these practices, Reid offers relevant research from both the Eastern & Western sources. And most importantly this information has multiple practical applications towards improving one’s own health.

“Not All It Claims To Be” 2009-02-24
By Demitri Pevzner (depends on time of year)
I would like to start by saying I have a few books written by Reed, and generally enjoy his writing. While this particular book contains a great wealth of information, some of it seems to contradict a variety of other materials on TCM, and some of the sources are dubious.

As one example, the author’s advice on healthy eating where he advises to stick to raw foods, seems directly in conflict with much of the established TCM theory (see Bob Flaws’ Arisal Of The Clear, Tao Of Healthy Eating, or Prince Wen Hui’s cook book as perfect examples.) His advice to stay away from processed foods, however, is right on. I did find the fasting section to be interesting.

The Qi Gong (fitness exercise) section is ok, nothing special or unique, but helpful to a complete beginner. I am not qualified to comment on the Taoist sexual practices, but the information seems to be derived directly from the Yellow Emperor’s Classic, and as such, seems genuine.

I also found it a bit disconcerting that the author advertises certain products that he is particularly fond of, as well as colonic baths. Much of the quotes and references in the book come from modern doctors and fitness gurus, which in my opinion detracts from this being a TCM book. Still, it can be said that every author/doctor has his own unique approach, so judge for your self, and ALWAYS cross reference the material.

My heath has improved. The person who originally recommended this book to me was Patrick “Rick” Fuller, a runner competing for the Olympics. Many of those who attended have commented on this blog, facebook, through e mails and over the phone. They are expressing their sincere excitement about this “Sanctuary in the Desert”.

All that attended this meeting, whether physically there or through the reading of this blog, mirror the “Running Ambassadors” of the Mayan civilization. The “Running Ambassadors” were those who after receiving new understanding, would then run to the villages delivering the new knowledge through personal conversation from one person to another. Each of us have the choice to become a clear vessel to what has been introduced. Referring to a past and present linage of ”Running Ambassadors”, those attending this meeting received an image of the TAO Metaversity and can now begin to share that knowledge by giving it voice. Through each Running Ambassador’s sharing, the TAO Metaversity keeps on gaining strength thanks to the help of other people’s thinking.

After the meeting, one of the present day Running Ambassadors recognized , “The statement you made about, ” The TAO Metaversity is already here”, was so true. It lives in all of us and what a beautiful place to have it.” Another Running Ambassador stated, “I’ve got the folder telling all about the TAO Metaversity right here on the table with me. I’m so excited about what is already in action.” And an exerpt from another Running Ambassador, who’s comments in their entirety are shared under recent comments on this blog, “I applaud the vision and energy- keeping the fire lit and gleaming brightly. Congratulations on this latest Development.”

Some years ago, I began working on my own version of the Daodejing (certainly I do not claim to having any substantial knowledge of classical Chinese! I had several other translations and other resources I was using, making it effectively a “version” rather than a “translation”). The very first line of the first chapter of the Daodejing has an interesting word: ch’ang. A few samplings of how this first line is typically translated:

The Tao that cannot be told is not the eternal Tao. [Gia-Fu Feng and English]

The way that becomes a way
is not the Immortal Way. [Red Pine]

The Way that can be told of is not an unvarying way… [Waley]

The word ch’ang is typically translated into English as “eternal,” “immortal,” “everlasting”—something along those lines. But as I dug around various books and internet resources, I discovered that the word also can mean “everyday,” in the sense of “ordinary”—that is to say, “the norm.” Personally, I thought “eternal” or “immortal” sounded far too abstract for the down-to-earth philosophy of the Daodejing. If the way is so ordinary yet ever-present, why make it sound so elevated? And so in my own version of the Daodejing the first line went like this:

the way prescribed is not the everyday way

If anything, haiku also is about the ordinary, the everyday. I have been thinking more and more of haiku as a form of thanksgiving. How can one be thankful for those simple things that we too often fail to notice every day? The best haiku focus on those very things. And so, with Thanksgiving coming up in the U.S., I thought this poem by Issa being appropriate:

A good world,

dew-drops fall

by ones, by twos.

The ancient Taoist sages who mastered mind and body had many different insights and techniques to h

The ancient Taoist sages who mastered mind and body had many different insights and techniques to have a healthy life and as a plus Self Realization. It is said that some of the teachings of Taoism originally come from India. This all makes sense if one investigates into the nature of Sanatana Dharma (hinduism) and Taoism. One can see the similarities between them. In particular I want to note is the use of energy in both systems. Not only this but both systems aim at Self Realization.

With that said breath work has been very instrumental to healthy living and enlightenment in both sciences. Many are familiar with the Yogic use of breath and energy work. The same thing is found in Taoist Yoga. What is deeply interesting to me is the technique of no breath. In Taoism this is called Embryonic Breathing. In Sanatana Dharma and Yogic paths one can achieve such a state in which no breath is necessary and yet the practictioner is able to control energy throughout his or her body and remain healthy and ALIVE!

In Taoism and in particular the practice of Qi Gong (sometimes spelled as Chi Kung) there is a use of Embryonic Respiration. It is the breath of no breath. This is possible when both the mind and body are fully relaxed. The mind and body must be relaxed and filled with Qi (Qi is life force, in yoga its called prana). Focusing on breathing is an easy way to relax not only the body but also the mind. A great method is focusing on the lower abdomen or the dan tian.

The lower dan tian or abdomon is about three inches below the naval. This is natural respiration. If you observe an infant you will notice that the infant breaths from this region. Overtime due to stress on the body and on the mind we forget this form of breathing. This breathing is very instrumental to good health and also mental clarity.

In order to begin Embryonic Respiration start breathing naturally. Just let the air come in and out. Watch the rise and fall of the lower dan tien (you dont have to look down). Have your eyes closed gently. You can sit in a chair (preferably on the edge of the chair with feet firmly on the ground and back straight but not rigid). You can sit cross legged if you like just make sure the spine is straight yet not in a rigid way. You are not trying to be a tough guy or woman let it be natural. Your right hand should rest gently on your lap and your left fist gently closes on the thumb of the right hand. This is a special mudra or hand gesture called the yin-yang mudra.

Let the breath be very natural. Have a few minutes to relax into simply allowing the rise and fall of the lower abdomen. After you have done this for a few minutes begin to visualize Qi (life force or energy) entering your body entirely. Let every part of your body be fused with this life giving Qi. Let no cell be without this Qi. The Qi pervades every part of your body. Every organ, vessel, cell, everything. As you breath out visualize stale Qi leaving your body. Do this set 9 times.

After you have completed the above cycle move on to visualizing Qi entering the upper dan tien or heart area of your body. Allow Qi to pervade the entire heart area of your body. As you breath out imagine this energy or Qi moving down into your lower dan tien or lower abdomen. Let this Qi pervade the lower region. Return again with another inbreath visualizing Qi entering into the heart area, then breath out vizualizing the Qi going down into the lower abdomen. Do this also for 9 times.

After that simply vizualize the Qi in the heart area as you breath in, then imagine the same energy staying inside your body and moving down into the lower abdomen. Then as you breathe in again vizualize that energy in the lower abdomen rising up to the heart region. Do this for 9 sets.

After the above cycle simply visualize the Qi staying in the abdomen. See it rising up in the abdomen with each in breath. Watch the Qi fall to the lower abdomen with each out breath. Do this 9 times.

Gently as you complete these cycles you will notice your breath getting quiet. It is getting very deep. Deep and slow. Breathing in you know that you are breathing in a long gentle compassionate breath. Breathing out you know you are breathing out a slow breath. Soon the breath will be without effort and you will not even know you are breathing! Don’t panic your still alive just enjoy this simplicit natural embryonic breathing. A gentle peace will definately come over you.

Never rush this or expect anything. Simply let the Dao or lot God or Emptiness or the Universe do it for you. Don’t let your ego parade over what is happening or what is not happening. Don’t let the ego tell you when you should be experiencing this stillness. When you find that your ego is trying to rush the process simply say to yourself “I will let the Dao do it for me”. The Dao is the Formless Reality or your Deepest Nature. It is Siva, it is God, it is ULtimate Reality. Allow this life force or the One Life to do it through you. So don’t beat yourself up. In Taoism a let of emphases is on NON EFFORT!

Enjoy be healthy and be love

Peace and love for eternity always

-Juan

NOTE:

Much of this technique was taken from the book “The Way of Qigong-The Art and Science of Chinese Energy Healing” by Kenneth S. Cohen a western Taoist. I have worded the technique in my own wording.

I heard a soft gong sound in the distance, once, then again, on the third ring my sleepy brain caught on to what was happening, it was 4:30 am and time to get up. I reach out for where the clock should be, unable to see in the dark and felt for the curve of the meditation timer. Not only was it dark it was cold, yuk. I was not into this, but it had to be done, and it was on me to do it, my Giri. My Chan brother had said, you must be special to be the one to help, I guess I replied, better to be the helper than the helpee ( a madeup word).

I was glad I went to bed on the early side to prepare for the trip, it was a beautiful sunset the night before. I was able to get a full night sleep, even though it was chilly in the morning once I got out from under the warmth of the down comforter, and away from the soft warm legs of the sleeping Lady Z, I was good to go. I had time this morning for a short meditation before gathering myself and getting on the road to LA. Most of the trip down to LA was cold. I had disconnected the heater in the truck, due to the heater core leaking and I have not had the money to repaired. So therefore no heat until the sun came up and I reach a more moderate latitude. I was glad I took my gloves with me for the trip, a couple of sweaters and my jacket and hat. It was cold and the air vent being open did not help matters. One really is grateful for the warmth of the sun, after being in the cold of darkness. I mean this on a couple of levels…

My youngest brother was back in the hospital from the nursing home. I needed to go down and find out what was going on, not only at the hospital, also at the nursing home. We wanted him transferred at some point closer to family. For now I was the closest some 6-7 hour drive. I needed to know what was involved with that process and could it be done. Also his roommate is moving out of their Apt and I need to pack his stuff, music instruments, electronics, clothes, book whatever was there. There was some issues about back rent, what to do with his stuff, etc. At this point he could not even recall who I was, so getting an inventory was out of the question as well as asking what was important. I just had to go for it and hope that if he recovers I picked the right stuff.

It was weird going through my brother’s things and having to decide what to keep and what not to keep. It is unsure if he will recover and what he will be able to do when he does. Going through personal items, gathering data, sad and weird. This is what people do when a family member passes, but in this case he is still around…

I could not help but wonder about his karma to have this happening in his life, as well as mine being the one to have to do it. Him being the youngest and me being the eldest, yet, he is the one in the hospital most of the time lost in non-reality, and having a machine, for the most part keep him alive. Without being hooked up to it, three times a week, he would be gone. While packing and sorting, I think about the many faces of karma, the ripples in the force that both of our karma touch, the other lives as well as our own. Even now maybe his purpose is being filled or both of ours. The turns life takes, I come across some of his childhood pictures and think I never ever dreamt I would be doing this or he would be in this in this space. It also think… it could have been me. Living alone , the lone musician, still trying for a break, playing from time to time, writing, hoping…getting burnt out. Life is interesting, the turns, the twist, the hills and valleys. It can also be very scary. One needs to not only be strong, but I really see the need for some kind of faith, belief in a purpose, or be cold and Jaded, which is more of my lil bother’s path. He wanted so much not to get the family involved with his problems, but in the final stages, it is his family even with great distance between us, it is his family who has his back. His friends, did what they could, but as they fade…family. Of course, and sadly , that is not always the case, sometimes friends are there when family is not. Hmmm, maybe to do with the Karma of those around us, the compassion…we give and take. Some are not so lucky, blessed to have family or friends…

I am up until 3:00 am packing his stuff, some clothes, mostly stuff, he spent more on things, than clothes. Finally I sack out. Sat, will be loading the truck and I’ll see how all this will work.

The next day after 4 hours of sleep I am up packing the truck. I’m good at this and so a couple of hours later I have every thing, stuffed in everyplace that something can fit. I only ended up leaveing two boxes of stuff I had not planned on taking anyway, but was for the most part forced on me by the roommate. It was left for charity with the rest of the stuff. There were a few expendsive things that were missing, I am hoping his friend sold them at my brother request. Anyway, I did what needed to be done there at the Apt. The next stop was at the hospital.

I had brought along my Kyudo equipment hoping to get some Kyudo in while in town. However due to waiting , packing, waiting, waiting, travel that never happened. So around three in the afternoon, I had had it, and hit the road again.

Another long ride back north with the chill of winter creeping into the truck cab as I ride higher into LA mountains. I start adding layers of clothes as the sunsets off to my left and the road dims with shades of darkness. I pop a record cassette tape of my brothers favorite tunes from the 70 & 80 into the tape deck. I reflect…life, what a long strange trip it is…I say a prayer for the suffering.

What’s all this about career, relationships and the toilet! How about my wealth corner is miss

What’s all this about career, relationships and the toilet! How about my wealth corner is missing – what can I do!

How much fear is generated when people apply the extremely simplistic formula of the black hat sect, and find that their wealth corner is in the toilet or their relationship sector is in the garage? Does that mean that their financial capacity is being flushed into the drains. Does that mean that when your relationship area is in the garage that you will be plagued by relationship problems related to movement – love and no laughter in the car!

If you have such a fixed model then there is little or no movement or flexibility. No yin and yang and no seasonality.

Traditional Feng Shui uses the underpinning assumptions of the BaGua but there is so much more to it.

First we look at the magnetic bearing of the house. Where, of the possible 360 degrees is the main door facing? Indeed there are some formulas that are calculated down to 0.5 of a degree.

We then look at the flow of universal energy in the larger physical environment.

The tricky part of the debate (if we could call it that) is that there is some basis for the BaGua school but they do not go deep enough. They just take ONE of the foundations (The BaGua) and then build their recommendations based on that static picture. Kind of like doing the excavations for a house and then saying well we are not going any further. That’s enough the house will build itself now. Another example is someone who wants to understand brains and their chemistry and physiology. They think because they have read a few books and magazines that they can now perform brain surgery. I don’t think so! If someone tells you they started with Traditional Feng Shui and then switched because they found it too difficult or confusing then you should go woa – this person has just jumped on the decorating with Feng Shui bandwagon.

Traditional Feng Shui is a whole system that shares a kinship with Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is a scientific / mathematical model, it is an aesthetic model, it is a cosmological system.

Its foundation is not the BaGua but The Tao, Qi, Yin and Yang and the movements between them.

It is not possible to take a bit of the model and then say that is an entire system of its own. Everything must come back to the integrated model. If you want to explore more about aspects of the integrated model then check out Feng Shui Vibrational Healing – Understanding Qi.

Jahrhundert dazu?“
