Pessoal, este fica em inglês mesmo, por falta de tempo!

Great movie! Tarantino mastered several components of film-making and produced a one of a kind piece of celuloid. Walz and Pitt delivered also great performances. It’s a pitty that the german friends won’t see with subtitles, because Pitt’s accent is a major part of the caracther and also several actors speak in their native languages, which is totaly vital for the film as well. Tarantino’s capacity to deliver unexpected scenes is notable. The guy is creative enough to surprise you every five minutes. A must-see.

Queria comentar algumas cenas e personagens.

Quentin Tarantino is a fuckin genius. Kill Bill is one of the most stylistically perfect films of the past twenty years (Inglorious Basterds is not too shabby either) but alongside all that brilliant filmmaking, he routinely delivers fantastic, nail-on-the-fucking-head film analysis and criticism.

Film criticism, at least at the university I went to, was pretty dry stuff. Everyone was still hung up on the ‘auteur’ theory and half the teachers were militant feminists. My buddy Sean got us (me, him, and Joe Abernathy) banned from any and all womens’ studies programs (not that we minded) for saying “Why is that when there’s a guy on the screen it’s just a guy on the screen, but throw a woman up there and suddenly it’s a STATEMENT???”

The Lab Teacher flipped on him (and me and Joe for laughing into our overpriced film theory text books) but it turns out, when there’s a guy on the screen, it’s also a statement. As Tarantino explains in this clip.

I’d like to write a review of Inglourious Basterds but it seems that so much effort has been spent keeping the real story out of the public eye that talking about it seems like I’m breaking some unwritten law, a law punishable by scalping and getting beat around by a baseball bat. Instead, lets think back to the first time you heard about Inglourious Basterds and how annoyed you were that it was spelt so badly.

We were told that Inglourious Basterds was going to be like the Dirty Dozen, it was going to be about a group of Jewish soldiers going around France fucking up the Nazi’s and leaving there scalped bodies to spread fear to other Germans. Then we saw the trailers, Brad Pitt looking like a war hardy veteran stood before a lineup of afore mentioned Jewish Soilders talking about going around France and fucking up the Nazi’s, then we saw the official poster and there was a pretty girl on it… what the fuck is that about?

Well forget everything you thought you knew about Inglourious Basterds because as usual Quentin Tarantino has totally twisted our expectations of what a World War II movie has to look like or be about. It’s not just the story line either – the use of modern music throughout is totally unexpected, as are the on screen written references with childlike hand drawn arrows that would seem to be more suited to an MTV show than a war epic. Added to that are random cuts to obscure old documentaries about the burning temperature of nitroglycerine and character explaining cut sequences voiced by Samuel L Jackson, both random interjections are a constant source of amusement to me and probably a slice of hell to the nerdy film types who write film blogs with clever names that reference pre-war German cinema in their title.

Also, rather surprisingly, Inglourious Basterds isn’t even about those crazy basterds roaming about the country “killin’ Gnazi’s” either! The plot line is, instead, another Tarantino trademarked tale of revenge set “once upon a time in war torn France”. and the first thing you’re going to have to come to grips with is that Brad Pitt and the rest of the Inglourious Basterds players are just bit parts in this epic story of revenge. The real star of the show is Christoph Waltz who plays Hans Landa the SS’s finest detective, nicknamed “the Jew hunter” and, in my opinion, Hans Landa is the best character that Tarantino has ever created! From the moment we are introduced to Landa early in the first act we are forced to hate him, he is clearly evil and arrogant like a comic book villain, and because of that, immensely enjoyable to watch, with Christoph Waltz playing the part perfectly and stealing every scene he is in.

I don’t know why the trailer was so misleading and didn’t make this obvious- maybe the Weinstiens didn’t think that the story of a Nazi Jew Hunter told mostly through subtitled French and German was going to move units in America (actually yeah I can understand why for the last 2 years we’ve been lead to believe Basterds was a movie about Brad Pitt and some guys causing trouble around the Champagne region now I think about it)…

I don’t want to give away any story details and I certainly don’t want to give away any of the quirky twists (I’ve even omitted a huge chunk of female character information from this already bare bones “review” so as to leave you with some surprises) and it’s killing me that so few people have seen this movie as I enjoyed it immensely! As always the fine line between comedy and violence is tread as if Tarantino was Phillipe Petit and “comedy” and “violence” were the names of the twin towers. The quality of dialogue is consistent throughout and I’m happy to give Tarantino a little time to show off what he’s learned about the world (as long as he never makes us hear it from 4 girls in a car for an hour (with no boobs) again).

Watch it and enjoy, then we can all talk about it…

Today i would introduce you classic movie – True Romance . The movie is made in 1993 , but im sure that lots of people have not seen it. The writer of the story is.. Tarantino ! I just love that guy , the plot is just amazing. In True Romance there is anything that a good action movie needs – unique dialogs , love story ,sense of humor , sex , drug deal , gangsters , lots of shooting and kills. Let me talk about the dialogs , as Tarantino has proved to us , he is genius , talking between the characters is impressive , full of unforgeable quotes . I would share favorite ones with ya :

“If it’s anything this last week has taught me, is that it’s better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it.”

“Sicilians are great liars. The best in the world. I’m Sicilian. My father was the world heavy-weight champion of Sicilian liars.”

“Do I look like a beautiful blonde with big tits, and an ass that tastes like ice cream?…..then why are you lying to me?”
Really wild and interesting script , the movie is 120 mins and would keep ya focused for the whole time. Classic movie that everyone should watch . For me the best crime romantic movie of all the time .Reminds me of Pulp Fiction . It has the coolest dialogues in movie history. The movie is worth watching so my rate is 10 / 10.

ps. poor way of expressing myself , seems that my English language keeps getting worse and worse.. pity

Quentin Tarantino talks with Asahi Newspaper journalists about his new film ‘Inglorious Bastar

Quentin Tarantino talks with Asahi Newspaper journalists about his new film ‘Inglorious Bastards’.

As a child, he used to love playing with GI Joe dolls.

“But I never played ‘war’ with them. I used to re-enact films that I had seen. If I saw a trailer for a film that looked interesting, I would also often imagine the whole plot (using my GI Joe dolls).

Film crazy ‘Little Q’, as he was known as a boy, now does the same thing using real actors. ‘Jackie Brown’ was a black film, ‘Kill Bill’ was Kung Fu, ‘Grindhouse’ was B-grade action. Each of his films are expressions of love for films that have inspired him.

In his new film ‘Inglorious Bastards’, he combines a war film with a spaghetti western. An American army colonel with Apache blood leads a group of Jewish troops against the Nazis.

“Nowadays war films always focus on the hardship of the victims – but it never used to be like that. War films used to be like adventure stories. I began to want to watch those old classics.

His starting point is always the desire to ‘make a film that I want to see’. “The Jews and the Apaches are a resistance force sworn to take revenge” – the comment highlights the mix of genres within his new piece. The films grew to a ridiculous length at first as I tried to get everything I like in there – it could have been a TV mini series for a while back there.”

“I found the way forward when I hit upon a heroic figure who appears in Nazi propaganda films.”

The sub-text of the film is a fight for recognition in Hollywood – US forces against Nazis, a cinema manageress who escaped from the Holocaust vs. the Nazis. The English army man who sympathizes with the US military is represented by the film critics, the spies are beautiful actresses. The explosion of destructive force in the closing scenes celebrates the Jewry who escaped from the Holocaust to Hollywood and became masters of their art.

The music to the film is a collection of pieces from the soundtracks of old films. The film’s theme tune which plays at the opening is ‘The Alamo’ and Tarantino came across it in a record store in Shibuya, Tokyo.

“In fact, I’ve never seen the film, but I knew the song from Kung Fu movies. The tune playing in the Bistro in Paris is also one from an album that I found and bought in Tokyo.”

The screenplay was written at home with various music playing in the background. Music is a kind of memory for the young boy who loves films.

◇

Quentin Tarantino – born 1963, left school in Los Angeles at 16. While working in a video store he started writing screenplays. He made his debut in 1992; in 1994 “Pulp Fiction” won him the Palme D’Ors at the Cannes Film Festival and a US Academy award.

I’m going to do a best of the decade in late December, along with my best and worst of the yea

I’m going to do a best of the decade in late December, along with my best and worst of the year. However, as I’ve been useless recently, and Xi and Wolf have got their lists started I thought I’d chip in with my bottom of the decade list. Which I feel I can do because I don’t think I’ll see anything worse than this lot before the year end.

This isn’t actually as easy as it sounds. Honestly. I had to narrow down a longlist from about 1000 pieces of absolute garbage. To be absolutely fair, I’m going to define the rules first:

1) These are all films without a single redeeming feature

2)These must be films that aren’t just bad but offensively awful and manage to piss me off in some way.

3)No more than one Superhero film can make it- I could quite easily have filled the list with about 10.

4)Only 1 of original and sequels can make it.

5No Platinum Dunes remakes. I could have filled the list with them

Anyhow, criteria defined- here we go. In reverse order:

Dishonourable Mentions:

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of The Crystal Skull, The Terminal, Van Helsing, Cabin Fever, Head Cheerleader Dead Cheerleader, Countless Superhero movies, Watchmen, Transformers, Matrix Sequels, Twilight, Scary Movie 2, Get Over It, The Sweetest Thing, The Last Kiss, Hannibal Rising, The Da Vinci Code, Poseiden, Oceans 12, Rob Schneider’s canon, The Cat in The Hat, Kill Bill 2, The Pirates of The Caribbean Sequels, Shrek 2 and 3, Swordfish, The Heartbreak Kid, Battlefield Earth, anything with Eddie Murphy/ Martin Lawrence in a fat suit.

*edit*

Since I wrote this I’ve been reminded of these other stinkers, that are actually worse than DM, but not quite bad enough to make it into the top 10:

Atrocious, but not quite top 10 level

13)9 Songs

Utter shit. Basically, just a slightly more explicit porno than Lust Caution. The reason it loses out to Ang Lee’s magnum snoozefest is that the chick in it shaves her armpits. Mediocre music combined with characters that aren’t so much ciphers as vacuums and the most explicit sex outside of hardcore porn.

To be honest, you’re better off putting on some music you actually like then watching hard core with the sound off.

12) Diary of the Dead

Romero proves Renton right once and for all: “You get old, you cannae hack it any more then you die”. All that’s left is for him to die.

Utterly dreadful, the central character is a complete cunt and he’s not alone. Romero needs to retire. However, like Xi, I’ve got battered wife syndrome with it, and will no doubt watch his next film.

11)Inland Empire

Unwatchable. Like putting your brain in a blender. As much fun as having your nipples electrocuted while some cunt asks for help with The Times crossword. By the end of this pretentious garbage you will be bleeding from the ears and your frontal lobe may have killed itself to relieve the pain.

The 10 Biggest Bags of Shit in the Last 10 Years

1o: Death Proof

Catastrophically dreadful. Completely boring. Totally useless. What the fuck was Tarantino thinking? This was billed as some kind of 70’s Grindhouse experience. It isn’t. What it is is hours and hours of boring self-indulgent women talking Tarantino (proving once again that he can’t write for women) before a ham fisted car chase. However, what makes this film a platinum stinker is that the climax of the film involves Kurt Russel crying.

Go and fuck yourself Quentin, you cunt. This is our Kurt, this is Snake Plissken, Macready, Jack Burton and you’ve made him cry. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your arsehole.

Absolutely unforgivable.

9: Lust Caution

The film that finally confirmed to me that I just don’t like Ang Lee films. A UK critic coined the term “Boredom Porn” to describe it and he’s completely right. It redefines dull for an hour, then there’s some nasty sex between two unlikable twats for an hour. Then it ends.

Dreadful. If you want to watch two people fucking, watch porn. Strictly for people too embarrassed to purchase dirty films. Or for dwarves to small to reach the shelf with real porn on it.

8: 2 Days in Paris

Before Sunrise was wonderful. Before Sunset was even better. This is, however, atrocious. Someone told Julie Delpy that she had some talent for writing, so she rips off those 2 films wholesale. Except for one thing, one tiny, important detail: the characters in those 2 films weren’t complete and utter cunts. Boring exposition following 2 self-indulgent twats around Paris. Julie Delpy’s character in particular is such an obnoxious bitch that I’m amazed he didn’t dump her yonks before the break up at the end.

Seriously, she shows naked pictures of him to her parents. And expects him not to be upset. And as if that wasn’t insulting enough- it turns out this is a picture she takes of all her boyfriends. Cow.

Oh, and there are far too many gratuitous cock shots of Goldberg.

7: Hostel

A plague on torture porn. This is, in my opinion, the absolute worst of a genre that frequently rips up the bottom of the barrel and then burrows towards the Earth’s core. The whole plot is simple: unlikable assholes get tortured to death in Europe. It fails for several reasons but most importantly, that you just don’t care about the people getting tortured. Diabolically bad, relentlessly dull and proof positive that that terminally useless cunt Eli Roth couldn’t direct piss into a urinal without help.

6: Funny Games

Personally, and I don’t know about you, but I don’t like being told I’m a complete cunt for watching a film by the fucking director of said film. Boring rubbish with delusions of grandeur and a completely pointless remake to boot.

Did I mention that it’s the only film I’ve ever seen to tell me I’m a cunt during the film?

5: Attack of the Clones

There’s been so much written on the Star Wars prequels in general (fuck you Lucas you soulless cunt), and yes, it is true that they do suck and probably did interfere with everyone’s favourite childhood memories. This one however, manages to comfortably be the worst of the 3. There are so many different reasons that this film makes this list, but I’ve included it because it’s the only film that I have ever successfully got my money back from the cinema for. That’s how bad it is- I managed to get Camden Town Odeon to refund me after the film.

And no, the last half an hour of it is not good- unless Yoda bouncing around like a demented ping-pong ball floats your boat.

4: Shrooms

I ACTUALLY OWN THIS PIECE OF SHIT AND CAN’T BRING MYSELF TO THROW IT OUT.

I admit it. I fell for the tag line. I’m a complete and utter cunt.

Dismal, predictable, ridiculous, boring, stupid, annoying, badly written, worse direction and just not scary. For some inexplicable reason they do a “hallucinogen cam” that just induced a migraine in me. If you can’t work out who the killer is within three seconds of turning it on then you should be banned from watching horror films.

Luckily, I saw this after OUTLANDER (motherfuckers), because if I hadn’t then the presence of Jack Huston in Outlander may have stopped me from seeing it. And that would have been tragic.

And now for the top 3 hall of shame:

3: Spider-Man 3

The presence of this film here in absolutely no way validates Superman Returns.

Ouch. This is the 21st Century equivalent of Batman and Robin. To be absolutely honest, it was a toss-up between this and Superman Returns for this spot, but this gets the honour for the following reasons:

1)Dunst sings. Twice

2)Tobey Maguire struts his funky stuff.

3)Tobey Maguire dances.

4)Sandman kills Uncle Ben (nb- I usually don’t give a fuck about abusing funny-book canon, but this was daft)

5)Plotholes you could park the QE2 in.

6)Sympathetic villain that wasn’t sympathetic.

7)Far too much crying.

8)Incomprehensible final fight scene with annoying cut away to reporter telling us what’s going on, as clearly we don’t want to see it in a film called Spider-Man 3. No, we came for the song and dance numbers.

9)For some inexplicable reason Spidey fights a Power Ranger.

10)Butler with the power of Wikipedia who only exists to explain the whole plot to Harry.

I could go on and on with this, but you get the idea. Raimi just clearly didn’t give a toss, and I suspect that it was that massive cunt Arad’s fault for shoe-horning Venom in.

Spider-man 3 is just a shit film, and very, very nearly a franchise killer.

2: Sex and the City

This is actually a contender for number one. Not just a bad film but a truly dreadful effort that reeks of cash in. Who in their right mind wants to follow 4 horrid self-indulgent cows in their various and terminally boring adventures. Not to mention the fact that the damned thing is over 150 minutes. This film is nothing short of offensive- every male character, bar one that gets appallingly treated by slut in chief, is a complete cunt and don’t get me started on the women.

Bear in mind that nothing of any interest to man or beast happens in that time.

Mrs. Jarv, in a moment of weakness that got her Lovefilm privileges removed for 6 months rented this. Even she admitted it was shit.

1: Alien v Predator: Requiem

Fuck me. Where to begin?

How about this- setting it on Earth in the present day. Or what about the fact that some cunt forgot to turn the lights on when they were shooting? There isn’t a redeeming feature to this fetid pile of garbage.

However, the real reason it’s number 1 in the Hall of Infamy is: The Predalien

Who in their right mind thought this piece of depressing fanboy wankery was a good idea? Who? Tell me, and I’ll feed them their own entrails.

A bad idea, poorly executed and even were the rest of the film as good as Alien (which it isn’t) then this would still be enough to make it the worst film of the last ten years.

However, when you add this little touch to the aforementioned poor effort, then you get what I think is the worst film for the last 20 years.

Alien v Predator: Requiem is a film so bad that it makes Uwe Boll look like Stanley Kubrick.

If anyone wants to give me more suggestions, then I’ll gladly expand this- it’s fun to do and I can summon up some real hatred for a lot of these films.

Cheers

I adore these comic book covers depicting scenes from Inglourious Basterds, so far my favorite movie of the year. They are simultaneously faithful to the film, yet take a few liberties here and there, which is fine since variety is the spice of life. More at BuzzFeed.

I title the note thus because earlier in the year a film called ‘Valkyrie’ came out star

I title the note thus because earlier in the year a film called ‘Valkyrie’ came out starring Tom Cruise, about an assassination attempt on Hitler. A true assassination attempt on Hitler. While being interviewed on the Jonathan Ross show Tom Cruise and Wossy laughed at the possibility of titling the film “Kill Hitler!”. Upon standing up to leave the cinema this evening I decided this should have actually been the title of Quentin Tarantino’s latest flick ‘Inglourious Basterds’.
Valkyrie and Basterds are the two sides of the same coin, they both deal with an attempt on Hitler’s life but are both wildly different in approach. Valkyrie is tardy of pace and historically accurate to the detail, constant displays on screen offer the date, time, minute and road of every scene. As such Valkyrie is more of a Historical document than a film but enjoyable with it. Cruise is actually very good in it too. Basterds has a healthy respect for history with all period details correct but it also has a healthy disregard for it too. And is ALL the better for it.
It is above all else a Tarantino film. All his trademarks are there and there is a warm sense of comfort as the same old lettering used in all his films comes up on screen. His love of dialogue is present but slang is not, this is not to its detriment however. Pitt has fallen into a category alongside Johnny Depp in my books in that I hate him because he is handsome, girls love him and he hasn’t done much wrong but I hate him more because he’s a really good actor and very talented. Pitt is excellent but he is not at all the ‘Locomotive’ behind which the film trails. Far from it. Valkyrie was lead by Cruise’s single-minded crusader, Basterds is lead by no one but Tarantino. No one has a big part in this apart from the fantastic Christoph Waltz who should get some sort of award but won’t, who plays the “Jew Hunter” Hans Landa. He really is one of the best villians I’ve seen on screen in a long time. Not only this but it also points out another major divide in Valkyrie and Basterds. Foreign actors and Accents. Valkyrie, other than the first few words, is entirely in English (or at least American). I would say 40%, maybe less, of Basterds is in English. French and German language dominates the film and as usual the subtitles subtract nothing from the action. Unlike in Valkyrie where, as usual, all Germans seem to be RADA trained actors. Almost all of the European characters are European Actors in Basterds. Inspired, no?
If you are expecting a rollicking yarn as well, you may be dissapointed. My over riding feeling from the audience as we left was that “it was boring” or “nothing happened”, which I thinks misses the point somewhat. There is not a lot of action but there are jarring moments of violence (another Tarantino trademark). See Pitts interrogation of Hammersmark. Wincey. This is because it acheives another thing Valkyrie does not. A). There’s an Englishman in it and a soldier at that (another coup in Cinema, apparently the Allied Forces included Britain too!) but B). Where Valkyrie paints the Germans with the same broad strokes afforded most War films “One-man-must-kill-another-who-has-family-aren’t-they-terrible-aren’t-we-terrible” etc. Basterds takes the “We goin’ kill you ’cause you de bad guy!” approach. On both sides. As such he paints, in much finer detail, the motives for each side and more importantly, each character. No one character gets an awful lot of screen time but what they do get, you know exactly who they are and why they are there by the end of their scene. This is again largely down to dialogue which Tarantino obviously still likes, be it in French, German, British or American, he lets the people tell the story. Which means by the end (the film is a leisurely two and a half hours) you suddenly realise “Oh yes! There’s a plot isn’t there? I wonder how that will work out?” And you have to see it just to find out.
Which reminds me. Sitting in my seat in the dark I was reacquainted with something I hadn’t seen in the Cinema in a long time. Suspense! My favourite scene set in a basement bar is so well put together you really don’t know what’s going to happen. QT stretches it well beyond a scene’s necessary length causing a palpable tension. I really was on the edge of my seat.
Anyway, I’ve rambeld on long enough. Chuck in an unrecognisable Mike Myers and Samuel L. Jackson as a narrator and you’ve got a winner!
My only beef with it is the music. Apart from the opening Spanish Guitar take on ‘Fleur Elise’ and a cool beat when Shossana is picked up to be taken to lunch, Tarantino’s typically esoteric choice of music is somewhat misplaced in this one. I don’t know. He seems to have stuck some of the tunes on as an after thought. Not his best soundtrack.
It is not QT’s “Masterpiece” (that laurel goes to either RD or PF depending who you ask. As you are wondering, my vote’s for Pulp Fiction) but it is a definate step back to his real classics. It’s not as shocking or inventive as it would have been 15 years ago but its a bloody good film and proves there is absolutely no one like him in Hollywood today.
Still think it should have been called “Kill Hitler!” though…
