This weekend, I am going to visit my first Virginian winery of the year: Hartwood Winery. This will actually be my sixth Virginian winery.

Okey and I fell in love with the first winery we ever visited. We were so impressed by the Mediterranean charm, personable owners, dog-friendly policy, great-tasting food, oh and the wine, that we decided to purchase a barrel for ourselves. We always take our friends and families down to Potomac Point when they visit.

For the record, we’ve also been to Hidden Brook, Lost Creek and Tarara Wineries.

We made a quick stop at Three Fox Vineyards to pick up a hostess gift for some friends, Ferb and Cherokee, and we didn’t get to do a full tasting. We met one of the owners who was a great guy, and when we described what we were looking for, he found it for us immediately. We will be popping back there again.

I’m hoping to find at Hartwood another owner who loves his wines and his customers. Some good wine wouldn’t hurt either.

After deciding on hardwood flooring, the second question a homeowner or future homeowner asks themse

After deciding on hardwood flooring, the second question a homeowner or future homeowner asks themselves is “what kind of wood?” In the United States, the first species that come to mind are probably domestic: Maple, Oak, Hickory, Cherry, Walnut, etc. But there are also exotic alternatives that feature a wider color spectrum as well as other pros and cons. Let’s stack up some exotic flooring species against some domestic species and look at the differences.

Enough with the prologues: Let the showdown begin!

This week: Showdown I: Tarara (Canarywood) VS. White Oak

Tarara / Canarywood Flooring

White Oak Flooring

Looks: This is quite a distinctive matchup, as Canarywood features dramatic yellows, reds, and browns, while White Oak features soothing brown and creamy yellow tones that are very familiar to the American housing market. Canarywood is definitely a wood for those looking to make their floor a distinctive accent to their home, while White Oak blends into more traditional decorative color schemes.

Strength and Durability: This is a category where the exotic species will typically outperform the domestics. Canarywood features a Janka hardness rating* of 1,860lbs, compared to 1,360 for White Oak. (For an explanation of the Janka Hardness Rating, see the bottom of this post.)

Movement in Service: Though it sounds like a military march of some type, movement in service means how much the wood can be expected to swell and contract. They typically fall between 1-10%, and the important things to take note of are:
a.) How large the radial shrinkage and the tangential shrinkage values are (the bigger the number, the more the wood moves, and the more potential there is for general mechanical issues with the wood) and
b.) How great is the difference between radial and tangential? (This indicates a higher likelihood of cupping, warping, and twisting.)

Canarywood’s tangential shrinkage rate is 8% and the radial shrinkage rate is 4%. White Oak’s tangential shrinkage rate is 7.4% and the radial shrinkage rate is 4.2%. In this case, the shrinkage rates are fairly comparable, but the differential is slightly larger for Canarywood, making it slightly less dimensionally stable.

Price (clear grade prefinished): Canarywood: Around $6-8/sf. White Oak: $4-6/sf.

Conclusion: If you want a very exotic and striking look along with a bit more resistance to impacts and foot traffic, then Canarywood is worth the extra money. If you’re looking for a tamer though slightly less durable wood with a better price point, White Oak makes a better option.

Stay tuned next week for Patagonian Rosewood versus American Cherry!

*Janka hardness: A measurement of wood hardness measured in the pounds of force required to lodge a .444 inch steel sphere to half its diameter.

Ok, well Tarara prefinished flooring is Yellow AND black, so that’s kind of false advertising. And it has red too. However, it’s all worth it if you check out how how awesome it looks. Basically, Tarara is one of the few truly yellow-yellow hardwoods out there. There are a lot of brownish yellows. But that doesn’t cut the mustard. A Tarara Floor has seriously striking yellows with bold black and red striping.

This isn’t your Grandma’s hardwood floor. Her glaucomic retina would probably explode gazing at all this colorful splendor. (Nothing against your Grandma. Just keep her at a safe distance. Maybe visit at a cafe or something.)

But seriously, Tarara is my all-time favorite hardwood, with Para Rosewood coming in at a close second. If you get a chance, be sure and check it out. It will change the way you think about even the concept of “wood.”

TECH SPEC ROLL CALL!

Kátjának szülei azt mondták, azért küldték a kubai szanatóriumba, mert elmebeteg. De Katja, mint a többi gyermek a napfényes tararari kórházban, sugárfertőzött.

A Kubában kezelt gyerekek állapotuk súlyosságától függően maradnak a szanatóriumban. Katja betegsége alapján a legsúlyosabb, egyes csoportba tartozik, de ő maga betegségéről semmit nem tud.

A szanatóriumban a gyereknek egy iskolát is létrehoztak, hisz vannak, akik éveket töltenek itt. A tanárok szintén ukránok, és többnyire ők is sugárfertőzöttek. Tánya tanárnéni, a tararai sikertörténet. Megműtötték, meggyógyult, most pedig ő buzdítja a kicsiket, hogy meg lehet csinálni, és igen is van remény.

Duck with blackberry sauce

This weekend I made duck breast with blackberry sauce from Epicurious for a special occasion. The comments section had some “wow this sauce is really challenging” comments along with “it takes much longer to reduce than the recipe says.” I didn’t really find either, the sauce was mostly pretty easy, it just involved a lot of stirring. And, true to the recipe, the sauce took about 25 minutes to reduce to about a cup of sauce, if not a tiny bit longer. This was my first time cooking duck, and I found that, at least for the thickness of the breasts I bought, the time the recipe recommended for a medium doneness was a little long, I stuck to it and got closer to medium-well.

Served it with a side of salad, a personal favorite: salad greens, thinly sliced pear, and a dijon vinaigrette – optional add-ons: goat cheese, sunflower seeds, croutons.

To drink: a bottle of Tarara Winery’s Meritage (of Leesburg,VA, which I visited this fall).

Georgetown cupcakes

For dessert: cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcakes. These live up to the hype, they are very, very good. I don’t make it out to Georgetown too often, so I hadn’t had a chance to try these after they got a rave review in the New York Times. Well I should have known if they were good enough for Frank Bruni, they were good enough for me. Favorites so far: lava fudge, chocolate 2, and lemon blossom.

This meal was quite decadent. Even though I recently got laid off, I’d already bought all the ingredients prior to that, and I don’t think Whole Foods would take too kindly to me returning $20 of uncooked duck breasts bought on Thursday, nor Best Cellars for me returning the expensive wine I special ordered, nor Georgetown Cupcakes for returning a dozen gift-wrapped cupcakes.

So, I made the best of a not-so-great situation and cooked a fabulous meal.

Had a great weekend filled with good food, company and entertainment. Wish every weekend was like this. Kicked it off with a nice Thanksgiving dinner with the family over at my brother’s house. Was good to see the family again and see my youngest nephew Daniel take his first steps. Amazing how fast they grow up!

Friday me and Emma opted to skip the shopping malls and instead went on a short wine tasting tour to Tarara Winery and Hillsborough Vineyards. Tarara was having a small craft fair, where several small artisinal shops were pitching their wares. We picked up some Monocacy Crottin and Chipotle goat cheese from Cherry Glen Goat Cheese Company. Add french bread and you’re all set. It was also our first time visiting Hillsborough – great views, decent wine and surprisingly good turkey soup! Finished off the night with what else – Thanksgiving leftovers. Luckily they were the dishes that Emma cooked the other day and not my brother’s … delicious.

<img title="Tarara" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3141/3075119191_62a14102e5.jpg" alt="We did the Reserve and Featured tastings and picked up a couple bottles of the Reserve Merlot and Chardonnay.
Saturday we caught an early matinee showing of the 007 movie Quantum of Solace. Decent flick – plenty of action. Later that evening we headed out to a delicious dinner at The Majestic in Old Town Alexandria (try the mussels) and then headed across the river to National Harbour to catch Cirque du Soleil performing Kooza. Was the first Cirque show I’ve ever seen – definetely won’t be my last. Amazing performances all around. We had a wonderful time. Just wish they let in cameras … although, I can understand why they don’t allow them. Flashes going off while performers are balancing 50 feet in the air could get hairy …

Capped off the weekend with Sunday brunch (mmm… home made pancakes and maple syrup), a 23-7 Giants drubbing of the Redskins and then home made lasagna and garlic bread.
