So you’re interested in GMing a RPG at a gaming convention! That’s awesome, both because Gary Gygax himself identified this as a way to ascend the higher levels of Role-Playing Mastery, and because as it happens I have to get ready to run a series of games at Anonycon in Stamford, CT on Dec. 4-6. So by writing a series of how-to blog posts using my own process of prepping for this event as an example, I’m hoping to trick myself into doing this work. Thanks for playing along!

The first step is to ask yourself “what do I want to get out of this experience?” When I take that advice, here are my answers:

1) I want to learn and get hands-on experience with Metamorphosis Alpha. I played the hell out of its successor, Gamma World, but the original rules and setting (available at that link as a free .rtf file) remain excitingly unexplored.

Getting to run the game you want to play is a great reason to volunteer to GM at a convention, Gentle Reader. If the RPG you crave isn’t on their schedule already, step up and run it yourself! Of course, if you’ve had problems finding people who want to play Super Awesome Let’s Pretend Time: d1,000,000 Edition among your usual group, recruiting players will still be an issue. The smaller the convention and the more obscure your passion, the bigger this problem will be. Future posts in this series will focus on ways to draw folks into your game.

2) I hope to do some playtesting of MA’s new edition, which uses the D&D 4E ruleset. That’ll mean doing things like having 4E characters mix it up with MA monsters and visa versa, as well as converting the original-edition MA characters to the new rules to see how well it preserves their spirit.

My motivation here is gets it exactly wrong. Good advice would have you playtest your adventure before you get to the con, not conduct playtesting once you’re there. For the Forgotten Heroes tournaments I helped create for Goodman Games and run at Gen Con, we ran the adventures multiple times beforehand with different groups in NYC. You don’t have to go that far, but it’s easy and recommended to take an adventure your regular group liked and use it as the basis for your con game, or slip the material you want to run at the con into your ongoing campaign.

3) I want to explore the mysteries of the Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan, which is fascinating to me because it was part of my first-ever experience of D&D and remains deeply strange: the pyramid seems to have been constructed as a forward-only time travel device and contains a tiny silver floating thing labeled “NEDRAW II” that I only recently realized is a link to MA, which speaks volumes to me about the early days of TSR history and the links between the first-ever fantasy and science fiction RPGs.

OK, I approve of my motivation here. Since it’s up to you what to run, why not choose something you have a personal connection to? If the mojo of your adventure is meaningful and exciting to you, your players are likely to be inspired by your enthusiasm.

4) I want to game with strangers and learn from their play-style.

This is especially valuable for playtesting, but I give this desire two thumbs up. Playing with groups whose approach can be totally different from your own can challenge your assumptions, and conventions are great for that. It’s an essential educational experience for every gamer. Pardon me while I flip through Master of the Game in search of textual support for this bold claim!

5) I want to help advance the outreach efforts of TARGA, the Traditional Adventure Roleplaying Game Association.

If you’re running something you think is a traditional RPG (read: specifically old-school, not just “is still played on the tabletop like they did last millennium”), you should want to help support TARGA too! More generally, it’s a good idea to see if you can link up with a publisher or organized play group, like the Kentucky Fried Gamers. Doing so can help you find players (the publisher may help promote your event, gamers may choose your game because they recognize your sponsor’s name). You may also be able to get some goodies like freebies and flyers to hand out to your players, prizes to award, a T-shirt, hat, or badge for you to wear, etc. Many publishers have demo teams devoted to this kind of thing that you can join, and you should go ahead and write to anyone you can think of who might be interested in supporting your event.

Here are some of the things I don’t want:

1) I don’t want to have a good time. I hope it happens, but it’s a secondary goal for me at Anonycon.

What I’m going to be doing at Anonycon- running four games in three-and-a-half different systems, related only by their themes – is insane and approaches making sense only in light of my non-fun objectives.

Don’t try this at home. Why are you doing this if not to have fun? Although, one of the ways to not have fun GMing at a convention is if you don’t get enough players for your events. Running the same adventure multiple times is easy because you get really practiced by the end of the con, which helps run it smoothly even when you’re worn out. And it’s enlightening because you get to see how different groups approach the same scenario. But it does mean that if you find some players who like your style, they can’t stick with you because they’ve played the adventure already. Doing related adventures using the same system and same pregen PCs is a good middle ground.

2) I don’t want to impress people with what a great GM I am.

One of the many reasons that convention games can go bad is that the GM is trying too hard. If what I want is to impress people, I’m likely to talk too much, sucking all the air out of the room and not leaving space for the players to, y’know, play. And if my motives for running a game are all about my greatness, there’s a pretty much 100% chance that I’ll be crestfallen when the players don’t shower me with praise. I’m going to show up and do my thing the best I know how. If the other folks at the table pick up on the example I’m trying to set and run with it, awesome! If not, maybe I’ll learn something for next time.

Riprende anche per quest’anno il prestigioso Concorso di Poesia organizzato e promosso dal Circolo Culturale Larocca di Campi Bisenzio. Di seguito ripropongo il bando di concorso comprensivo di tutti i dettagli informativi, eventuali richieste possono essere rivolte direttamente a Rosanna, Stefania o Silvia ai numeri riportati in fondo al post.

Possono partecipare al concorso poeti e scrittori italiani e stranieri (con traduzioni in italiano). Le opere partecipanti dovranno essere inviate al Circolo Culturale “Larocca” – Via Colombina, 80 – 50013 Campi Bisenzio (Fi) entro e non oltre il 31 gennaio 2010. Farà fede il timbro postale.

Il Premio si articola nelle seguenti Sezioni:
“SEZIONE A” – Poesia singola a tema libero. I concorrenti potranno inviare fino a 3 poesie, edite o inedite, a tema libero, in 6 copie, di cui solo una dovrà recare i dati relativi all’autore: nome, cognome, indirizzo, recapito telefonico ed eventuale indirizzo e-mail.
“SEZIONE B” – Poesia singola a tema libero. Riservata a studenti delle Scuole Elementari, Medie Inferiori. I concorrenti potranno inviare fino a 3 poesie, edite o inedite, a tema libero in 6 copie, di cui solo una recante le generalità, l’età, la Scuola e la classe, l’indirizzo ed il recapito telefonico dell’autore. La mancata indicazione della classe e scuola frequentata sarà motivo di esclusione.
“SEZIONE C” – Premio “GABRIELE BELLUCCI”, Poesia singola a tema libero. Riservata ai giovani di età compresa fra i 15 ed i 25 anni. I concorrenti potranno inviare fino a 3 poesie, edite o inedite, a tema libero in 6 copie, di cui solo una recante le generalità, l’età, l’indirizzo ed il recapito telefonico dell’autore.
“SEZIONE D” – Narrativa, “Racconto Fantasy”. I concorrenti dovranno inviare un massimo di tre racconti del genere Fantasy (epico, umoristico, gotico, ecc.). Ogni racconto dovrà essere dattiloscritto e non superare le 5 cartelle (max 30 righe per pagina). I racconti dovranno pervenire in sei copie, delle quali solo la prima firmata e recante i dati relativi all’autore: nome, cognome, indirizzo, recapito telefonico ed eventuale indirizzo e-mail.
E’ richiesto un contributo di partecipazione di 20,00 euro per le Sezioni A e D da inviare in contanti o a mezzo versamento sul conto corrente postale n. 42764092 intestato al Circolo Culturale Larocca. Nessun contributo è dovuto per le Sezioni B e C.
In caso di versamento sul conto corrente postale, nella busta contenente le poesie deve essere allegata – pena l’esclusione dal concorso – ricevuta in originale o in fotocopia del suddetto versamento.
E’ prevista la realizzazione di una Antologia del Premio, in cui saranno inserite le poesie ritenute meritevoli dalla Giuria del Premio.
Gli autori, per il fatto stesso di partecipare al concorso, cedono il diritto di pubblicazione nell’Antologia del Premio senza aver nulla a pretendere come diritto d’autore, il giudizio della Giuria è insindacabile, gli elaborati non saranno restituiti, i  premi non verranno spediti e dovranno essere ritirati dai vincitori, o da loro delegati, nel corso della premiazione.

Gestern gab es bei LIDL einen Targa Nettop Mini-PC für 199 Euro. Nur einen Monat zuvor hatte es ein baugleiches Modell vom Hersteller Medion als Sonderposten bei real für 299 Euro gegeben. Ob der Preisverfall etwas damit zu tun hat, dass Windows 7 nun am Markt ist und auf dem Nettop-PC Windows XP installiert ist?
Für mich jedenfalls ein Schnäppchen. Die 0,33er-Getränkedose daneben, dient dem Größenvergleich. (übrigens chinesisches Bier, mitgebracht aus Hongkong) Der Adapter an der Seite ist DVI auf VGA. Den Standfuß muss man nicht unbedingt montieren, das ist Geschmackssache. Mitgeliefert ist ein Montageset zur Befestigung auf der Rückseite von Flachbildschirmen. Das Gerät verspricht lüfterlos leise und natürlich sehr stromsparend zu sein. Zur Inbetriebnahme bin ich bisher noch nicht gekommen. Technische Daten: Intel Atom 230, 1,6GHz, 160GB HDD, 1024MB RAM, SIS MIRAGE 3+ Grafik. WLAN ist nicht eingebaut, ein WLAN-Stick ist aber mitgeliefert.

Bereits im regulären Betrieb ist mein Silvercrest Doppelschlitz-Toaster, den es am 05.10. für 17,99 Euro ebenfalls bei LIDL gab. Lustig fand ich, dass auf der Rückseite eine kleine Delle im Gerät ist, die beim Qualitätscheck offensichtlich aufgefallen war, da sie mit einem roten Klebepfeil markiert war. Das war aber scheinbar kein Hinderungsgrund das Gerät in den regulären Verkauf zu schicken.

In a recent post in BaT, the Bulgogi Brothers spotted a unique find that makes us say, “Waaaaaaa?”

Yes it’s a mouthful, ‘75 Mazda powered turbo rotary Porsche 911. But here’s the skinny, you’ve got a the ‘75 targa top design with a conventional Mazda rotary engine and turbo.  Not that a Bulgogi Brother would ever buy one of these, but if cashe~money was not issue, nor authencity (a Bulgogi tenet), a car like this would be worth 12 months of inglorious hoonage either on the track or on canyon runs.

I bet if I even had the slightest thought of getting this car before the others in my dream queue, Gyro would probably roshambo me .

It almost tempts me to make a category called ‘WTF’, but sound in the video (below) will make you do a double take.

I thought I would start with the most iconic of the cars I have owned. The Porsche 911SC Targa. I purchased this vehicle sometime in 1999 from a Porsche fanatic out of Indiana. I paid $12,500 for this car and I have to say it was an incredible bargain. The car was immaculate had all of the upgrades needed for this model; the SC. The car was a 1982 with 66,XXX original miles. The upgrades included air box pop off valve, metal chain tensioners and R-134 AC. It was a 5-speed (of course) and drove like new.

DRIVING IMPRESSIONS: Where do I start. In one word – visceral. From the design, to sounds and smells of this car it is pure German hot-rod. The ride is by no means refined, I actually equate it allot to driving a motorcycle. With the 911’s engine in the rear design you had to very careful setting up for turns. Go in too fast and you can get in trouble very quickly – this is one of those cars that if you are finding yourself too hot in a corner you MUST stay on the gas or you will end up ass first straight off of the road. I had experienced this many times and all but one time was able to make it through – white knuckles and all. The only mishap was coming around a 90 degree right turn a bit too fast, there was gravel on the road in the turn and the 911 did a 180 right in the middle of the turn. Stayed on the road – thanks goodness but about 2 inches from kissing the large and suspension crushing curb. The shifting in this car was also quite comical in a way, the shift stick is reminiscent of an old tractor – long and notchy. Once you got it down it was ok, but never smooth and fast. This was one of the eventual reasons I think I sold this car. Several upgrades are available to upgrades the shifting on the old SC’s – ask me for a reco if you are looking. I would not say this was a fast car but, fun was more like it. O-60 was in the high sixes and the top speed in the 140’s. I have had the car up to about 120-125 MPH and the front end tended to float at those speeds, very interesting to say the least. More to come..

Kijken naar een Porsche is al heerlijk, laat staan om erin te zitten. Je waant je even een coureur, die de Eau Rouge-bocht van Spa Francorchamps veel te laat aansnijdt. Dromen in de garage, het mag even.

Dichter bij de grond kom je niet, dus bij iedere drempel flink in de remmen. Maar goed, dit is een echte Targa uit de jaren negentig. Het beste bouwjaar was ‘94, deze zit daar niet ver vandaan. ‘Open dak, leren stuur, stoelverwarming inbegrepen, een aardige versnellingsbak en de motor is in goede staat’, dat zou een verkoper er zo op kunnen plakken. En dan is het zeker geen verkooppraatje.

Een auto om duimen en vingers bij af te likken. Om vrouwelijk schoon zonder problemen van A naar B te vervoeren. Wie weet, ooit…

Hola!! ¿Cómo están?. No se si se han enterado, que volverán a hacer dentro de un tiempito, la película de The Wonder Woman y al parecer será protagonizada por Byonce. Como la noticia me recordó la fascinación que sentía de pequeña por esta heroína, se me ocurrió ¿por qué no hacerme el disfraz?, ya que una de las cosas que más me gusta de Second Life es eso precisamente, que uno puede andar disfrazada, sin que te digan ridícula, jaja. XD

Las cosas que necesitaremos para realizar nuestro disfraz (que dicho sea de paso, el método inicial, siempre puede servir para la creación de cualquier prenda )será:

• Photoshop (Cualquier versión)
• Plantillas  o Templates (Avatar UV Templates) yo utilicé las de Robin Wood, y las encuentras aquí: http://www.robinwood.com/Catalog/Technical/SL-Tuts/SLPages/AVUVTemplates.html

* Una vez que descargan las templates (tienen que bajarse las Layered Photoshop .psd files, que es la que sirve para PS.(Photoshop)), deben abrirla en una carpeta que les quede cómoda,ya que vienen comprimidas).Pueden bajarlas todas, la de cabeza, piernas, top, falda o la que dice all(todos) o solo las 2 que necesitaremos, eso a gusto de ustedes.

• Texturas: dorada, roja y azul con estrellas que hayamos hecho antes en Photoshop o conseguido por ahí.

Creando el short

Bueno, aquí no me he esmerado gran cosa, simplemente, lo hice dentro mismo de SL, en el menú APARIENCIA/ CREAR PANTALÓN NUEVO/ y le dí las medidas de un short. En la parte dónde permite poner la textura o tela, puse una textura con fondo azul y estrellas que tenía ahí. (Si tienen muchas ganas de usar el Photoshop las 3 texturas, las pueden hacer ustedes mismas y sino, las consiguen, como hice yo.) y le dí a guardar, renombré la prenda y listo

Creando el top:

Ahora sí, abrimos nuestro Photoshop y comenzaremos a subir lo q necesitamos. Un documento con cada textura (la roja y la dorada). y el abriremos el documento de la template, que se llamará: SL Avatar Top Layers. Veremos que la template está en tamaño de 1024px, pero le bajaremos la resolución a 512. Para eso vamos a IMÁGEN/TAMAÑO DE LA IMÁGEN y se abrirá un menú como este:

Una vez rebajada la resolución, nos quedará de tamaño pequeño, la imágen y para no volvernos chinos, con la vista, le daremos al zoom, para acercarla a un tamaño prudente. A continuación procederemos a crear dos capas, en el menú CAPAS de nuestro Photoshop. (a una la llamaremos TOP y a la otra DORADOS).

Ahora, iremos a nuestro documento que abrimos antes,(con la textura roja), y seleccionaremos toda la textura, con la herramienta VARITA MÁGICA/HERRAMIENTA SELECCIÓN RÁPIDA. y seleccionamos toda nuestra textura roja. Iremos luego arriba a EDICIÓN/ COPIAR, y volveremos al documento de la template.

Tomamos la herramienta, LAZO POLIGONAL y vamos marcando FUERA del contorno, primero de la parte delantera de nuestro top, cuando veamos que hemos cerrado la forma, que se han unido todos los puntos, empezará a “titilar”, ese es momento de ir a EDICIÓN/ PEGAR DENTRO y automáticamente, se rellenará el dibujo con la textura. Repetimos exactamente, la misma operación con la parte trasera del top y luego seleccionaremos la capa DORADOS.  La parte roja del top, debería quedar así:

miren bien la selección que yo hice, es preferible que les sobre textura hacia afuera y no que les falte, porque de este modo, taparán bien la piel del avatar y no quedarán líneas o sitios blancos, cuando hagan el top en SL.

Ahora, como dije antes, procederemos con la capa llamada DORADOS.Seleccionaremos la textura dorada, del mismo modo que hicimos con la roja.Volvemos al documento de la template, seleccionamos esta capa DORADOS y regresamos a tomar la herramienta LAZO POLIGONAL (o en su defecto, si quieren y desean hacer un dibujo menos geométrico y mas redondeado, la herramienta LAZO MAGNÉTICO.) e iremos dibujando los detalles dorados que tiene el top de WW. Con esta misma herramienta, sin soltar el trazo, vamos haciendo el dibujo, cuando titile, EDICIÓN/PEGAR DENTRO y se nos irá pintando el dibujo que le hemos hecho. Repetimos del lado trasero del top, este procedimiento y debería quedarnos algo como esto:

Bueno, como verán yo no soy dibujante y he hecho lo que pude XD .Seguramente, ustedes crearán trabajos mejores.

Bueno, nuestro top, está hecho, solo falta algo más. Iremos (a el menú de las capas) quitando el globito ocular u “ojito” y ocultando a TODAS MENOS: TOP Y DORADOS , de esta forma nos aseguramos, que cuando vayamos a usar en SL, solo nos quede el top y no las “rayas” que vemos ahora debajo.En el menú mismo CAPAS, seleccionamos el ícono AÑADIR UNA MÁSCARA (un rectángulo con un círculo en el medio) y llevamos a guardar en formato TARGA (.TGA).Le ponemos un nombre y cuando nos dé la opción : OPCIONES DE TARGA, le pondremos 32 bits/píxel. Y Terminado, a subirlo a SL.

Así se verá nuestra imágen subida a Second Life, este es le paso previo y la previsualización, dónde si la prenda tiene algún defecto, aún estamos a tiempo de cambiarla, y no gastar los L$.

Incluso, veremos que podemos rotar la imágen y ver si se vé bien de todos lados. Una vez, que le dimos ok, se guardará en el inventario en la carpeta de TEXTURAS. Para transformarla en nuestro top, vamos a el menú apariencia del avatar, crear nueva camiseta y le damos las medidas de un top, luego, solo trasladamos la textura, desde nuestro inventario a la casilla TELA. Guardamos los cambios, una vez que veamos que quedó como nos gusta. Y LISTO!!!.Hecho nuestro top. Sigamos con el calzado.

Creando las botas:

Yo, para la creación de las botas utilicé el mismo método que en la creación del top. Necesité para eso, otra de las plantillas de Robin Wood, llamada: SL AVATAR BOTTOM LAYER.

Y usé exactamente el mismo procedimiento que para el top. LSo tres documentos abiertos, (las 2 texturas, mas le de la template) Y con las mismas herramientas, LAZO POLIGONAL, marqué los contornos, luego, fui a EDICIÓN/COPIAR (en el caso de cada textura) y EDICIÓN/ PEGAR DENTRO, en cada color y dibujo, y algo así me quedó.

Así para el color de fondo de la bota.

Y de este modo para el dibujo que le quise hacer. Como ven, no parece perfecto, pero ya verán luego que bien quedan.Ustedes, serán más detallistas y pacientes que yo seguro. Recuerden que todo el procedimento de capas, guardado y subida a SL, es le mismo que el top.  Y una vez subida a SL, entramos al menú  APARIENCIA y le damos a crear zapato nuevo. Alli una vez marcadas las medidas a nuestro gusto, enviamos la textura de las botas, a la casilla TELA y nos quedarán listas. Guardamos y ya.A continuación seguiremos con los accesorios de la Wonder Woman.

Creando el lazo, la tiara y los brazaletes:

A continuación necesitaremos estar en SL, porque estas cosas las haremos con prims comunes. Salvo la estrella, que tiene en sus brazaletes y tiara la  Mujer Maravilla, que la podemos hacer de dos maneras, o utilizamos un programa de sculpted prim, como el Rokuro, (como hicimos con la espada), ya que para este simple accesorio, es muy fácil de usar  y rápido, o utilizamos otra textura, que contenga el dibujo. En mi caso usé el sculpted prim.

Aclarado esto, procedemos a la creación de casa accesorio.

• EL LAZO: Sacaremos un TORUS, lo achicaremos  a un tamaño de X=0.066

Y=0.355 y Z=0.253 (medidas aproximadas, no hay q ser exactos) XD

Le daremos en GIROS,hasta 4.00, o sea todo. para que nos quede un espiral.

TAMAÑO DEL HUECO: X=0.450 Y=0.05

Le agregué la textura, que puede ser de sogas, que en los pack de 10mil texturas suelen venir o quizás la consigues le dí un brillo máximo y algo de GLOW, pero cada uno lo deja como le gusta. Copié la misma soga, la achiqué y la acomodé, para que parezcan atadas. Las Enlacé, la renombré y las llevé al inventario. Le di ANEXAR A y le puse STOMACH.

• LA TIARA: Bien simplona, un cilindro hueco, de tamaño le dí: X=0.016 Y=0.186 y Z=0.236. Le hice un corte en CORTE DEL INICIO A FIN: I=0.500 F=1.000 .Luego, en TAMAÑO DEL HUECO X=1.00 Y=0.05. Le agregué la textura, le dí algo de brillo también,y le agregué la estrella, en roja, como la que ella tiene, en este caso, como ya les dije, hecha en sculpted prim. Enlacé las 2 partes, las renombré, las llevé al inventario, y el detalle aquí es adicionarla a la NOSE (naríz) para que no interfiera con nuestro cabello. Solo queda luego, acomodarla con las flechas de posición del menú de edición del objeto. Y Lista la Tiara.
• LOS BRAZALETES: Nuevamente, elejimos un cilindro hueco, y les dí estas medidas: X=0.185 Y= 0.081 y Z= 0.081. Le agregué textura dorada, obviamente, y los brillos y efectos deseados. Del mismo modo hice con la estrella, a la cuál, le puse textura roja. Enlacé las dos partes en el menú herramientas, del SL, y los renombré y los llevé al inventario. Hice copia, en el mismo inventario de la siguiente manera : lo seleccioné, le di a copiar pegar y luego, ataché cada uno a su brazo correspondiente .

Para no hacernos líos, nos conviene guardar todos estos objetos en una misma carpeta en el inventario que podremos llamar DIZFRAZ W-W y listo a disfrutar e impresionar a los amigos!!! XD y por qué no, presentarse a algún CONTEST, en el que se pueda participar con disfraces, que a veces, seguido, hay uno. Ieri sera in occasione del 65° anniversario dell’evento come istituto storico della resistenza e dell’età contemporanea della provinci di Pistoia abbiamo scoperto una lapide che ricorda la barbara uccisione di due giovani donne di Calamecca, Luisa Biagi e Giulia Giovannini, avvenuta nella fattoria della Macchia Antonini il 20 settembre del 1944.
Le due giovani donne furono torturate per due giorni e due notti e poi uccise ed i loro cadaveri abbandonati su uno strato di sterco di cavallo.
Un così tragico e barbaro evento non è stato ricordato mai in questi anni e il nostro istituto si è dovuto impegnare da solo per ricordarlo come il più elementare dovere civico e morale imponeva.
Si tratta di un episodio che, come purtroppo tanti altri nel nostro paese, è stato sotterrato per anni e decenni sotto una coltre di oblio.
Si tratta di una morte che può essere definita “una morte dimenticata” e “una morte profanata”.
Il nostro istituto si sta impegnando da tempo per cercare di portare alla luce vicende di cui non si è potuto o voluto parlare. Cito fra i tanti esempi la vicenda dei due fratelli Guermani e della giovane Assunta Pierattoni e di altre vittime della barbarie nazi-fascista che abbiamo ricordato facendo ricerche accurate e infrangendo il colpevole muro del silenzio. The final day of Targa Newfoundland 2009 started in Marystown, and competitors made their way back to St.
John’s through a number of stages. Weather was not cooperative today. Rain was constant, and the forecast called for 30-40 mm over the day.
One of our stages ended up being cancelled as the schedule fell further and further behind as the weather required downgraded speeds all day.
Final results should be available soon on Targa Newfoundland website.

I am having some trouble reaching the PM (Potential Mate.) He’s in Newfoundland, participating in the 2009 Targa Race. So here’s a letter to him. Please pass on the message if you happen to see him.

(You’ve seen the bugs I’m dealing with, and could really use him here. He’s awesome with the bug killing machine -BBQ tongs and a Tim Hortons napkin- and will stare down any creature, no matter who potentially squishy or venom filled.)

 The team has been crazy busy keeping up with the mechanical requirements of a race vehicle, so look for the guy with a 3 day beard, plum sized eye bags,  and wearing the same socks he left in a week ago.

I am sending this message via smoke signal, since we cannot seem to connect on our cell phones. I am starting to wonder what’s up.  I know, I know. You’ll just say, “But honey! Cell reception is notoriously bad here. We’re on A ROCK you know!”

Thanks for the email picture of you and the crew working on the car. But upon closer inspection of the photograph, I can see that the legs sticking out from underneath the car resemble broom sticks with your work boots shoved onto the ends.

Mmm hmm. You’re sure you didn’t all band together and arrange to jam the cell phone signal towers east of Montreal? I know what you’re up to. For heaven’s sake, you’re in Newfoundland! Home of the infamous George Street, and the nicest people in the western hemisphere!  And I heard through the grapevine that Budweiser has also sent some ladies to keep you company. I know they treat you guys like celebrities down there, but don’t get a big head. When you come home, you still need to cut the lawn. And I’m not serving you champagne after you do it, like you asked me to last year. And the victory lap on the riding mower was entirely unnecessary.

If you are so lucky to win a plate again this year, I KNOW it’s a HUGE accomplishment, and you have every right to be bursting with pride. Just please, please ask the organizers if it contains lead, because I am pretty sure you’re not supposed to be eating off it.

You say you can’t call at night because you’ll be up WAY past my bedtime fixing the car. I believed it the first 3 times you told me you’d be “tranny pulling.”  Sounds awfully suspect to me. And a little dirty…

Since I’ve had so much time on my hands in your absence, I started doing a little “investigating.” Did you know that Las Vegas actually hijacked the “what happens…” slogan? Yes; it’s true. Originally it was “What happens at Targa, stays at Targa.” Funny, I don’t remember reading that on your application and welcome package when I found where you had hidden it behind the furnace.

I did however find some graffiti scratched in the table where you held your 17 hour team pep talks.

You remember those meetings, right? They start about 2 weeks after your return from Targa and run weekly until the days leading up to the event.  Still don’t remember? You and co-driver and the mechanical crew would pore over charts, graph papers and stats. Your cumulative brain power when thinking about Targa could solve the energy crisis. So why is it then that the refrigerator currently sits at a 78 degree angle, is shimmed by a sawed off 2×4 and leaks out the bottom? And no, I have not yet got my kids to believe it’s the water dispenser.

Oh, and while you’ve been at Targa tinkering with the car’s engine, straightening the stickers and having midnight roundtables about the best oil to use?

My timing belt blew off, I am driving on 2 bald tires and the passenger door has been held shut with a bungee cord since last Tuesday.

Next week you will return home tired, sore, outrageously happy, and already planning for next year’s event.

I’ll be waiting. Look for me in the pool. I mean kitchen.  

Today started at a beautiful little town on the Burin Peninsula called Harbour Mille. Cars ran into the town, breakfast was served at the fire hall, and then the stage was run in reverse. Following that we went to one of my teammate’s mother’s homes for lunch in Lewin’s Cove. Afterwards we worked the finish control at the stage through Marystown.

Today the first stages were run. I woke up with a fine hangover because I have not yet learned to not try to keep up with the English in the pub – the service crew for the cars I posted yesterday just happened to be there.  

Today’s stages were not scored. It was a sort of test day / familiarization course for the competitors. Despite this, the day was not without incident. Car 906, the factory supported STi, driven by Marc LaChapelle & codriven by Keith Townsend, was involved in an off road excursion resulting in a precautionary trip to the hospital for the crew. They were checked out and are fine. Last I heard, they are in need of a steering wheel hub in order to complete repairs.

The combination of jet lag and sleep deprivation has resulted in a feeling of disorientation like no other. I got a basic tour of the St. John’s area from my gracious host which included a jaunt out to Cape Spear, the easternmost point in North America.
I met with the rest of the volunteers today, got the standard package of stuff, had a little bit of time to check out the competitors that were on display, and saw a couple of gorgeous twins (see picture.) Now it’s time for a nap…

Da biblioteca Peppino Impastato a biblioteca comunale di Ponteranica. Accade a Ponteranica, Comune in provincia di Bergamo. Il nuovo sindaco leghista, Cristiano Aldegani, ha fatto rimuovere la targa voluta un anno e mezzo fa dal suo precedessore di centrosinistra che aveva dedicato la biblioteca civica al giovane siciliano ucciso dalla mafia nel 1978. Una iniziativa motivata dal desiderio di onorare personalità locali, ma che ha suscitato la reazione del Pd e dell’associazione antimafia Libera. «Sono polemiche pretestuose – ribatte il sindaco – fatte da persone in malafede. C’è addirittura chi mi accusa di essere pro-mafia, è assurdo»

Il sindaco precisa che l’iniziativa della Giunta «non ha alcuna motivazione diversa» da quella di valorizzare personalità locali, come il sacerdote sacramentino Giancarlo Baggi, al quale sarà presto dedicata la biblioteca. A fine giugno, dieci giorni dopo le elezioni, c’era stato anche un incontro, che Aldegani definisce «cordialissimo», con i rappresentanti locali di Libera. In quell’occasione c’era stata anche la proposta di un’eventuale manifestazione “riparatoria” dedicata a Impastato, ma oggi, pur «non precludendo niente», il sindaco ricorda che prima di riproporla deve sentire «la volontà della Giunta e della maggioranza».

Migliaia di persone – 5mila secondo gli organizzatori – hanno sfilato sabato 26 settembre a Ponteranica (Bergamo) per chiedere la ricollocazione sul muro della biblioteca comunale della targa dedicata a Peppino Impastato, ucciso dalla mafia il 9 maggio 1978. L’insegna era stata fatta rimuovere il 10 settembre dal sindaco leghista Cristiano Aldegani che ha stabilito di dedicare la struttura a un sacerdote bergamasco. I manifestanti avevano centinaia di palloncini bianchi con il ritratto di Impastato e tante bandiere della pace. . Durante il corteo è stata collocata una targa in memoria di Impastato ai piedi di un nuovo ulivo, dopo che quello piantato il 3 giugno 2008 (giorno dell’intitolazione della biblioteca) è stato tagliato nella notte (Fotogramma)

Sto parcheggiando molto lontano dal mio nuovo posto di lavoro all’EUR nella Polisportiva dove faceva la barista mia madre quando ero un bambino. E’ sabato mattina e sono dovuto correre al lavoro poichè nel pomeriggio dovrà essere rilasciato un importante Kit di aggiornamento.

Percorro a piedi il lungo tratto di via Cristofo Colombo osservando il cielo che minaccia pioggia imminente. Arrivo sul posto di lavoro e mi siedo nella mia solita postazione.

Sono un progettista di cerchi e la ma mansione consiste appunto nel fare cerchi in terra e creare successivamente strutture circolari. Con me ci sono Laura, Luca e Ilenia.

Verso le 14.00 comincia a piovere e decidiamo di tornarcene tutti a casa prima che si scateni il finimondo. Io accompagno Ilenia al suo triciclo nuovo di zecca parcheggiato poco distante da lì e, durante il tragitto, incontriamo un raduno di persone che guidano dei carri attrezzi. Ecco allora che uno di loro a folle velocità invade il marciapiedoe dove stavamo camminando e, senza curarsene minimamente, ci punta addosso per poter parcheggiare. Fortunatamente la nostra prontezza di riflessi ci fa scansare entrambi e non rimaniamo coinvolti nello scontro.

Ilenia va fuori de se e comincia ad inveire contro l’autista, prende il suo martello gigante e, per vendetta, prende a mazzate la marmitta del carro attrezzi. Io e gli altri la guardiamo attoniti e senza parole mentre si dirige verso un fianco e colpisce ripetutamente la carrozzeria fino a che fa cadere il martello in terra, corre verso il suo triciclo e comincia una folle corsa verso casa.

Rimaniamo tutti sorpresi da quel gesto (incluso il proprietario del carro attrezzi ormai distrutto) ma, solo il tempo di razionalizzare l’accaduto, ed ecco che tutti gli autisti si riuniscono per organizzare una battuta di caccia. Mi fingo uno di loro e tento di depistarli contraddicendo ognuno sull’identificazione e sulla strada appena presa da Ilenia così da poterle far guadagnare ulteriore tempo per un ritorno a casa senza problemi.  Si è però fatto tardi e la pioggia continua a cadere sempre più fitta,  decido  quindidi affrettarmi nel tornare alla mia auto che ora era ancora più lontana di prima.

E’ questo mio gesto che insospettisce gli autisti che cominciano a seguirmi fotografandomi con delle  speciali macchine fotografiche che catturano i movimenti del passato del soggetto inquadrato.  Grazie a questo favoloso apparecchio scoprono che lavoriamo insieme e vedono in me uno strumento per arrivare ad Ilenia il più presto possibile.

Decido allora di depistarli ulteriormente e dirigermi verso la metropolitana nella quale, per potervi accedere dovevo privarmi di un antico manufatto ereditato dalla mia famiglia. L’oggetto in questione andava inserito in una rientranza del muro  cosicchè avrebbe rilasciato una targa d’oro che ne avrebbe successivamente consentito l’accesso.

All’atto di inserire il mio manufatto però qualcosa va storto e si risvegliano orde di Saraceni dalle loro tombe. Sfodero il mio pugnale e comincio la battaglia più facile della mia vita onirica. I Saraceni si tagliavano come il burro e, sebbene tendessero agguati anche in gruppi di più persone, grazie al mio pugnale, al primo tocco scomparivano e tornavano nei loro letti di morte.

Let’s face it; there are few companies that know more about making a good supercar than Porsche. They’ve had a lot of practice since the company was formed in 1931. And for the past 80 years or so they’ve left one crowning achievement in the trophy cabinet. The 911; the world’s most popular performance car. And for years now they’ve been trying to outdo themselves, by making it lighter, faster, and more powerful, whilst still maintaining that the correct place for an engine is in the boot. So over the years we’ve had the 911 Turbo, Carrera, Targa, GT2 and many more. But only recently have we had the GT3, supposedly the best 911 you can get. And it slots into the Porsche range very well indeed. A little too well in fact…

Porsche have had this problem once before, when the Boxster first went on sale. It was very fast, and very good looking, and also, keeping to Porsche’s marketing ethos, it was also very expensive. But it slotted bang smack into the middle of the Porsche range a little suspiciously. Everyone who drove it came away with the same comments. Yes it was fast and yes to experience that kind of acceleration you usually have to qualify for the astronaut programme, but you just get the unending sense that the car is a little reserved, a little held back. It’s almost as if Porsche knew that the Boxster could be a rival to the 911, so they sabotaged it a little, they gave it a broken leg so it couldn’t keep up with their front runner. In short, they made it with less potential than they knew was possible, just so it wouldn’t intrude on the 911’s party.

But before we go any further, let’s have a look at the GT3 in a bit more detail. Owning this ultimate version of the ultimate supercar is not going to be cheap. In fact, even the most basic model is going to have you singing to the tune of £81,000. And for that you get 435hp, and a car that can get to 194mph with no problems at all. On the negative side however, I must admit that to me, the GT3 looks like a 911 with some unnecessary garnish on the back. That rear spoiler just serves to draw attention to you as the kind of person that will inevitably run someone over, and in a supercar, attention ain’t cool. My other big beef with the GT3 comes down to practicality. The 911 on its own is great to drive on the road; and the GT3 RS, essentially a stripped out GT3, is perfect for on the track. So why then, make a supercar that can do a bit of both? You could argue that the GT3 is good on the road, but then when you want to let it loose on the track it can provide the trouser-stroking thrill of a track car, and to a point you’d be right. But it’s a question of being able to do both, but not being brilliant at it. Kind of a Jack of all trades, master of none situation. Let me explain. The 911 works fantastically on the road because it was built from the ground up as an on-the-road car. And similarly, the GT3 RS handles on the track about as well as is possible, because it was designed for that very purpose. The fact is that settings for cars that go on the road are very different from settings for cars on the track. On the track for example, there are no speed humps, so you don’t need a raisable nose. On the road however, the country is riddled with them, so you need a car that can cope. The GT3 is, to my mind then, a bit confused, it doesn’t know where it belongs. It can handle both the road and the track, but it isn’t particularly good at either.

Porsche has already proven that the 911, on its own and without any garnish at the back end, is a great car. So why are they trying to slot the GT3 into the equation? I think it has something to do with the fact that now, Porsche along with virtually every other major car manufacturer, is run less like a car company, and more like a business. They see a minute gap in the market, for those 3 people around the world who might want to make use of a car that isn’t great on the road, but then again isn’t that great on the track either, and decide to make a car for them. One bit of advice then for you, Mr Porsche, stop pissing about with the 911, and get on with moving that engine into the right place.
