VNET : NASDAQ : US$9.46
BUY 
Target: US$15.00

COMPANY DESCRIPTION:
The largest carrier-neutral Internet data center service provider in China, 21Vianet hosts customers’ servers and networking equipment and provide interconnectivity services. The company also provides managed network services through its data transmission network

Investment recommendation

We maintain our BUY rating and $15.00 price target following 21Vianet’s Q1/13 report that demonstrates its ability to sustain its growth
momentum and overcome some of the temporary disruptions from capacity upgrades. We believe that the incremental investments in new
data centers, network capacity and cloud computing, while temporarily dampening margins, will result in higher growth and profitability in 2H13
and beyond. Priced at 5.7x 2014E adj. EBITDA, the shares of VNET offers compelling risk/reward for investors, in our view.
Investment highlights
 Solid revenue, slightly soft margin on investments – Q1/13 revenue came in stronger than expected (RMB 435.7M vs. 433.3M CGe) with
slightly lighter-than-expected EBITDA (RMB 80.1M vs. 82M). We note that higher-than-expected operating costs were attributed to higher
bandwidth costs with greater network capacity and continued investments ahead of revenue contribution from cloud computing.
 Signs of hope from Q2/13 outlook – Although Q2/13 guidance is not as strong as we had hoped, it nonetheless confirms our view that the
disruption from recent capacity upgrade is now behind and that the company’s growth momentum is picking up again. Following two quarters of decelerating growth, we believe the change in trajectory marks an important inflection point for investors.
 shift to higher MRR cabinets in large cities and revenue contribution from Microsoft cloud will likely improve both revenue and margins

A couple Sundays ago, I visited a different Toronto Target with my in laws, and it felt as though the store was giving something away based on the number of people there. My sis-in-law mentioned the “swarm” of people, particularly at check out. It was a Sunday, which is always a busy day for Target, but this felt especially cramped and insane…not Black Friday insane, but crazy for a Sunday. Due to a woman who purchased over $400 worth of items, we waited in line for fifteen minutes before it was our turn to check out. Some items were without tags, so store employees had to research pricing while we waited behind her.

While waiting, I couldn’t help but wonder: what did this woman actually walk into the store to purchase? She walked out with copious articles of clothing for her four-year-old son who was with her, even more for her toddler daughter, as well as games like Sorry, Twister, and a 12-in-1 games box that seemed like fun (chess, backgammon, checkers, pick up sticks…all in one?!) Did she intend to purchase these games and clothing, or did she walk into Target for the regular household items?

I wonder how much Target makes on this type of consumer: the person who walks in for five things on his or her list and walks out with fifteen that weren’t on the list. And does this type of buying convert a shopper into a Target customer for life, thanks to the convenience and price of the “extra” items that end up in your cart?

I have spoken with some Canadians who are unhappy with Target, comparing it to US stores. More to follow on that subject. But I would love to speak with those who have never stepped foot inside a Target until now. I will have to seek them out. Until next time, happy shopping.

I’m more like a coupon libertarian.

I think that coupons can have expiration dates, though I don’t like them. I think the issuer can make you buy two of an item to get $1 off, thought I don’t have to like that either. I don’t like this new trend of coupon limiting.

It happened a couple of weeks ago at Target. They had Chobani on sale for $1 apiece. I bought 10 and had 10 coupons (yeah printable coupons!). The Target register cut me off at four.

Today at Wegmans, the register started going haywire about halfway through the stack, making the cashier press buttons to override a message about exceeding a coupon limit. When I made a joke about the register not liking me, the cashier told me that it’s a new thing that forces them to approve coupons one by one after any shopper his $15 (I had $30 worth).

This might prevent fraud. It more likely keeps stores from sustaining too much of an immediate cash loss, even though the fine print on the coupon says that they are reimbursed for the value plus 8 cents handling.

I get that there is a business to run and the business is to make money. But again, I don’t have to like it. Call me the Ron Paul of coupons.

Speaking of money, I did not win last night’s Powerball. That went to a single winner in Zephyrhills, Fla., a backwater northeast of Tampa. One ticket for $590.5 million. I forgot to check the tickets for any small prize winnings, which I will probably do tomorrow when I inevitably end up at Wegmans again.

My sweet daughter.

Whenever I would take her out, it was like a dream. She would sit primly in her high chair at the restaurant, people watching and calmly eating her dinner. At the grocery store she would sit quietly in the cart, eyes wide as she took everything in.

That seems to be over now.

A week or so ago while in Target she turned around in the seat of the cart so she could watch where we were going. Then while we were checking out, she stood up in the seat. Thankfully, she was strapped in.

Today we went to Babies R Us to get some things, and she did the same thing she did in Target: spun around so she could see where we were going. While we were checking out she began screaming like she was being attacked by a shark. I ran around to the end of the cart where she was to find she had twisted so much that she was hanging halfway out of the cart through the leghole. The only things stopping her from falling out were the strap and her leg that was wedged in at a weird angle. I pushed on her butt and got her back through the hole and she was fine.

We went to Walmart after that and she twisted in this seat (this time strapless, as it was broken) and would randomly screech as we traveled through this store. This part didn’t bother me. When we got to the checkout, while I was messing with my phone she started running her fingers over a magazine cover in the stand next to us. No big deal, right? Except when I pushed the cart forward to start unloading my items she pulled ALL of the magazines out of the stand and dumped them on the floor.

Then, while I was picking up the magazines she turned around and dug in the cart and came up with my wallet. It was open in my purse, and she snagged it by the bottom corner and pulled it out upside down, dropping about $4 in small change, every card I have and all of my receipts into the cart along with our purchases. Luckily I had a bunch of reusable bags in the bottom of the cart so those bags caught the stuff before it could fall out on the floor.

She got her leg wedged between the seat and the edge of the cart while I was checking out. Then when we got outside I loaded everything into the trunk, the took the cart to the corral and then pulled her out of the seat. She screamed her lungs out. She’d gotten her foot wedged between the two leg holes and I nearly yanked it off when I pulled her up and out of the seat. I’m surprised nothing is broken or bruised.

She’s becoming quite the handful!

I always love to receive inspiration from things that I’ve seen in stores, online, or at a friend’s home. Here are a few items that I have been loving lately that will help to make your space exciting and your experience hosting flawless. A few of these I currently have and a few I am pining after. What are your recent favorites?

Jayden Aluminum Stool

These stools from One King’s Lane are a perfect addition to your home.
I am absolutely loving gold accents (or any metallic, really). Shortly after moving into our new apartment, I was shopping at Target for necessities and came across the white urchin and had to have it. I knew a gold one existed, but no stores seemed to have anymore left. The day of our inaugural dinner party, during a last-minute shopping trip I stumbled upon a lone gold urchin and snatched it up. I also picked up the gold-dipped bowl above, which made a great dish for chips! Both are in the Nate Berkus for Target collection, which includes some really cool, reasonably priced accessories. The metallics add a touch of fanciness to any party!

Mercury vases can add a vintage feel to your space, and create a nice contrast to some more modern pieces you may have (like gold and/or neon accents).
Finally, the be-all, end-all of hair dryers. My hair dryer died a few weeks ago after a long haul together. Since I use it often and knew that I wanted one to last a long time again, I splurged a little bit and got this bad boy, The Hana by Misikko. This dries my hair in about 3 minutes flat (and I have a lot of hair). Because it dries so quickly, right around the time that you normally start sweating from the heat, you’re done! So in those instances where you thought dinner prep wouldn’t take quite as long as it did and the one thing you have left to get ready is yourself? (Me. Every. Single. Time.) Save some precious moments by drying your hair in no time AND look fabulous by the time your guests are knockin’ at your door.

Investment recommendation

When DKS reports Q1 results on Tuesday, May 21, we are anticipating an in-line quarter (48c on 0% comp), which in our opinion would be a
welcomed result given the challenges it faced during Q1. To no surprise, unfavorable weather likely muted any potential upside, particularly in
golf and team sports/baseball. That said, we believe there were pockets of strength (e.g., guns/ammo, footwear, and apparel) that mitigated the
weaker categories. Looking to the balance of the year, we believe the opportunity to drive outsized comps improves as weather normalizes
and compares ease, while the fundamental long-term growth thesis stays intact. We reiterate our BUY.
Investment highlights
 We are looking for GG comps to be down mid-teens with DKS store comps flat. Golf and baseball/team sports faced tough comparisons from last year’s perfect Q1 weather and the bat replacement cycle. That said, we believe guns/ammo experienced a significant increase that we estimate added 1% to comp. Also, the UA/NKE/adidas shopin- shops should continue to drive strong sales gains.
 According to our industry checks, the competitive environment has remained rational as promotional activity has stayed in check. As such, we do not see risk to merchandise margins and commensurately we expect inventory levels to be clean.
Valuation
Our $59 PT is an average of 18x 2014E EPS estimate/9x EBITDA

It was the lowest since 0.1% in October 2009. Statistics Canada said on Friday prices fell by 0.2% on a monthly basis from March to April, pushed lower in part by cheaper gasoline and cars helped. Core inflation, which excludes gasoline and other volatile items, dropped to 1.1% from 1.4% in March; on a monthly basis core prices rose 0.1%. The weak inflation data underlined how little pressure there is on the Bank of Canada to raise interest rates, despite its insistence that the next move will be up. The central bank said last month it did not expect overall or core inflation to return to the 2% target before the mid-2015.

Cellphone bills could spike if Telus-Mobilicity deal approved

Telus announced a plan Thursday to buy struggling wireless carrier Mobilicity for $380-million, a deal observers say that will prompt higher prices for monthly cellphone service if it is allowed. “Maybe you want to talk to your provider and renegotiate your deal now,” said John Lawford of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre. Mobilicity was part of a new wave of small wireless companies to challenge Telus, Rogers and Bell after the last wireless spectrum auction. The company, which does not require long-term contracts, brought unlimited talk-and-text plans to the marketplace, said Lawford, executive director of the Ottawa-based group.

BMO told by U.S. Fed to toughen up anti-money laundering controls

The Federal Reserve announced an enforcement action against Bank of Montreal, Canada’s fourth-largest lender by assets, for “deficiencies” in compliance with anti-money laundering and Bank Secrecy Act rules and regulations. Examiners at the Chicago Fed discovered the deficiencies at Bank of Montreal’s U.S. branch. The Fed said today that the bank “lacked effective systems of governance and internal controls to adequately oversee” compliance with anti-money laundering rules. The enforcement action calls on the Toronto-based lender to review the effectiveness of its compliance program and “remedy deficiencies.” Bank of Montreal operates a U.S. consumer lending business in the U.S. Midwest through its Chicago-based BMO Harris Bank unit.

Fool’s Gold?

Investors are dumping gold like it’s melting in their hands, but consumers continue to scoop it up, creating a dichotomy in the bullion market, writes the Financial Post’s Peter Koven. Today’s gold market is being defined by two trends: aggressive selling by investors in North America through exchange-traded funds, and aggressive buying by consumers in Asia. But for now, the ETF investors are overwhelming everyone else. Gold prices settled below US$1,390 an ounce on Thursday, and after five rough trading days in a row, they are approaching the lows that were reached during last month’s dramatic collapse. Amid that turmoil, the World Gold Council (WGC) issued a report that shines a light on how rapidly investors are dumping their holdings. The report shows that overall gold demand fell 13% in the first quarter of 2013 compared to the same period a year ago. While that is not too bad on the surface, investment demand fell an astounding 49%. Investors sold a net 176.9 tonnes of gold through ETFs in the quarter, or roughly US$9.3-billion worth of the yellow metal.

Telus dials Mobilicity

Telus Corp. announced plans to buy startup wireless carrier Mobilicity Thursday, a move that ramped up already intense pressure on the federal government to address its strategy when it comes to competition in the sector, writes the Financial Post‘s Christine Dobby. Vancouver-based Telus said it will purchase the privately-held company for $380-million subject to approval from both regulators and Mobilicity’s debt holders. Analysts say the deal, if approved, is a winning proposition for Telus, as the purchase price essentially covers tax losses plus the $243-million Mobilicity paid to acquire spectrum licences in a 2008 auction of the radio airwaves providers use to build wireless networks. “The transaction is not overly material for Telus and can easily be financed with the balance sheet,” RBC Capital Markets analyst Drew McReynolds said in a note to clients Thursday. But whether Industry Canada will allow the sale to go through is the real question raised by the announcement.

Bullseye hits Walmart

Even Walmart Canada may not be not immune to what retail watchers are calling “the Target effect.” Same-store sales, operating income and foot traffic suffered at the country’s biggest mass merchant during Target’s first quarter in Canada, amid a period of dampened consumer spending and unusually cold weather, writes the Financial Post‘s Hollie Shaw. “Net sales grew 6.1%, but Canada had a decline in operating income and did not leverage expenses,” Doug McMillon, president and chief executive of Walmart International, told investors on a first-quarter conference call Thursday for parent company Wal-Mart Stores Inc. More critically, sales at Canadian stores open for more than a year, an important barometer of retail health known as same-store sales, fell 1.3% in the period ended April 30 and customer traffic at those stores declined 2%. Average basket size edged up 0.7% on the same basis. Target opened its first 24 Canadian stores in the Ontario market in March. “Our results were impacted by the unseasonably colder weather this year versus unseasonably warm weather last year and the leap year overlap,” Mr. McMillon said, adding consumer spending also weakened in Canada because of higher household debt levels.

Canada: Economically hurting

Economists have been debating whether Canada’s housing market was in a bubble and when that bubble would burst. In a new report, British Columbia-based Pacifica Partners Capital Management asserts that question is missing some much scarier stuff going on. Yes, housing is now in decline after largely avoiding the 2008 shock, they say. But everything else has also been going haywire: unemployment, credit, stocks, etc. That is all the more remarkable, they argue, because Canada emerged from the 2008 crisis appearing a paragon of stability in the world. Pacifica quotes Horace to sum up the situation: “Many shall be restored that are now fallen and many shall fall that are now in honor.” A pronounced shift in both Canadian and U.S. economies has taken place, write Pacifica’s analysts. “The Canadian economy, once the envy of Americans, Europeans, and others, is now widely viewed as a commodity dependent, “one trick pony”.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper is seeking to counter opposition to TransCanada Corp.’s Keystone XL pipeline, a project crucial for boosting Canada’s economy and Harper’s plans to make the country an energy superpower to rival Saudi Arabia. Harper, at an event Thursday moderated by former U.S. Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin for the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, said there is a strong case for the U.S. government to approve the pipeline, citing the prospects for job creation and North American energy independence. “All the facts are overwhelmingly on the side of approval,” Harper said. “I know the administration will do a thorough analysis before arriving at the right decision.” President Barack Obama’s administration is weighing whether the pipeline is in the U.S. national interest amid calls from environmental groups to kill it. The pipeline would help ease a glut of Canadian crude that the Bank of Canada says is crimping economic growth, as well as depressing prices for producers and cutting government revenue.

It’s a Phablet

One could be forgiven for thinking reference to BlackBerry’s purported “Phablet” was about it being “phab.” In reality, it’s about the potential announcement of a new, small tablet device that market observers think the Waterloo-based company may be hiding up its sleeve. Blackberry Chief Executive Thorsten Heins has been far from enthusiastic about the future of tablets, but he hasn’t ruled them out. When he met with some industry analysts for a private conversation on Tuesday he didn’t lead them to believe a tablet would hit shelves in the immediate future, said two analysts who asked to remain anonymous because they made non-disclosure agreements. Both acknowledged that they were told a tablet-like device is at the stage where it is nearly ready to hit the market, though neither of them expected to see it released this year.

What a mess

First milk, butter, coffee and cornmeal ran short. Now Venezuela is running out of the most basic of necessities — toilet paper. Blaming political opponents for the shortfall, as it does for other shortages, the embattled socialist government says it will import 50 million rolls to boost supplies. That was little comfort to consumers struggling to find toilet paper on Wednesday. “This is the last straw,” said Manuel Fagundes, a shopper hunting for tissue in downtown Caracas. “I’m 71 years old and this is the first time I’ve seen this.” One supermarket visited by The Associated Press in the capital on Wednesday was out of toilet paper. Another had just received a fresh batch, and it quickly filled up with shoppers as the word spread. “I’ve been looking for it for two weeks,” said Cristina Ramos. “I was told that they had some here and now I’m in line.” Economists say Venezuela’s shortages stem from price controls meant to make basic goods available to the poorest parts of society and the government’s controls on foreign currency.

Facebook and Target seem to have teamed up for a win-win to entice consumers to increase their presence both online and in stores. Through the creation of a new app, Cartwheel, users can select special savings coupons solely for Target to appear in their Facebook News Feed. Users then bring their smart phone to Target to redeem the coupon by logging into Facebook and scanning the barcode mobile coupon at the check-out. These coupons are only valid in-store and by using the Cartwheel app, which is in its beta run.

Although it may seem like a trendy way to become a coupon clipper, it does pose a few privacy concerns. By using the Cartwheel app, you allow Target to have access to your Facebook information. Furthermore, the coupons that appear on your News Feed would be an accumulation of products your Facebook friends have selected. Your shopping habits would then be made known to everyone, including that guy you met at that party that one time, and your nemesis at work who is trying to snake your job. You won’t have the ability to hide the um…”personals”…under the other stuff on the cash register belt online as you usually do in line.

The beta version does allow users to edit their Facebook privacy settings to prevent certain friends from viewing the “unmentionables.” Target also takes the step to allow you to turn off the sharing function and does not display a couple of the personal care products.

As with everything in the online world, take proactive steps to protect your privacy by doing a thorough search of all application options before agreeing to the terms and going on a shopping spree for those polka dot long-johns you secretly love to wear.

Hello, everyone! Hope you are all doing great! I personally love e.l.f. products. I think that they are really amazing, and the price is super affordable. You will not break the bank when you purchase e.l.f. products. Right now, I wanted to focus on my favorite lip glosses I currently own. I remember just buying these from my local clothing stores, and now I can buy them at my local Target, Kmart, or on the eyeslipsface.com website. This is not a review, but I’d like to mention that these lip products are highly pigmented, and super glossy. Another great thing about these they all smell good. They can be sticky for some people, but I truly do not mind that. For $1.00 I think it’s a steal. In my opinion, these lip glosses are of a good value, and quality. So what do you think? I would love to know your thoughts on e.l.f. lip gloss, please feel free to comment below.

If you haven’t guess, I LOVE to shop at Target. I try to go to there store anytime that I am close. You see we don’t have one in our town, so I have to drive about 30 minutes away to go…boo! [probably good for the wallet] I usually find the neatest things in their stores. They carry the look for a lesser price. Here are a few of the new styles they have, that I LOVE…

Fabulous Finds Under Forty

When I think Summer, I think days at the pool and picnics at the park with my son. And of course, I want to look fashionable doing it For relaxed days at the park, I want something that is comfy but still looks good. Target is one of my favorite places to shop for my go-to summer outfits. They have so many cute pieces that are inexpensive but still good quality. This week’s Fabulous Find includes six pieces that can be put together into one adorable outfit or worn separately with other outfits! Each piece is well under $40 and did I mention how adorable each item is

COMPANY DESCRIPTION:
TearLab Corporation has commercialized a proprietary tear testing platform, the TearLab Osmolarity System, that enables eye care practitioners to test for highly sensitive and specific biomarkers using nanoliters of tear film at the point of care. Their first product measures tear film osmolarity for the diagnosis of dry eye disease (DED). The company is headquartered in San Diego, California.

Investment recommendation
TEAR crushed our Q1 bookings estimate driven by strong growth in its
Master’s program with large ophthalmology practices. We expect the
strong ramp to continue through FY13. We raise our price target to $10
from $8.
Investment highlights
 Strong Q1. TEAR reported very strong Q1 revenues of $2.5M (up 54% sequentially), which topped our/Street’s $2.2M estimates. TEAR booked 388 orders, well ahead of our 234E. TEAR placed 324 instruments in Q1, well ahead of our 114E and up from 103 in Q4.
 Master’s program paces growth. Multi-instrument placements into high-volume group ophthalmology practices accounted for over 40%
of its 388 bookings. Use of implementation specialists is helping practices implement testing.
 Strong ASCRS sets up Q2. TEAR had a good show at ASCRS, which gives us added confidence in our Q2 forecast of 375 orders.
 Sales force. TEAR ended Q1 with 27 direct reps, up from 23 in Q4.
 Model update. We increase our 2013 and 2014 revenue estimates to $15.5M (from $13.4M) and $30.1M (from $27.1M), respectively, as its Master’s program gains traction. Additional investment in sales and marketing spend keep our EPS estimates intact.
Valuation
We raise our price target to $10 from $8, which assumes a 5x P/S multiple to our 2015E sales of $65M, discounted at 15% to 2014.

Today is the Trend of the Month Challenge Link-Up and May’s Trend link-up is Yellow! Hop on over the Marion’s blog to link-up!

I talked a few times about being afraid to wear yellow most of my life but since changing my hair color to red, I’ve attempted to embrace the color. A few years ago while at Target (where else?) I saw their $7 Tees and I decided to get one in yellow, hopping it would work with my red hair. I’ve worn this tee loads of different ways on the weekends throughout the summer and spring, but I’ve never really dressed it up for the office.

White Blazer & Tee – Target, Navy Cropped Pants & Bag – Thrifted, Jade Statement Necklace – Grandmother, Bracelets – Julep, Sandals – Payless

This white blazer is the perfect way to dress up a tee in any color really, it instantly takes a casual outfit to classic! It’s has gotten loads of wear this season too. A white or colored blazer is the perfect staple in a spring/summer business wardrobe and yet can be worn casually as well.

Originally when I thought about how I could dress up my yellow tee for work, I wanted to pair it with a navy blazer and white pants, but it just didn’t work with the navy blazer I have so I reversed the colors with white on top and navy on the bottom. To help tie everything together I added my white purse and sandals, oh and a red lip!

I have found that the simplest outfits have the most impact. I love that about this look! I got lots of compliments from Caveman and a few women at work too!

Although you can’t really see it unless you’re in direct sunlight, my necklace is made of Jade. I’ve been looking for a way to wear it for a while now, but just never could seem to get it right. Wearing it brings me closer to my late grandmother and reminds me that she was a hard working mother too!

Late Grandmother’s Necklace

This weekend was MY weekend, Mother’s Day. Dub was super sweet and bought me exactly what I asked for – a kneeler:Let’s be honest here, what husband wouldn’t run out and buy something called a ‘kneeler’. With the purchase of our new casa, I do spend quite a bit of time in the yard and have even started using Miracle Grow – fancy huh? That’s why when I saw this bad boy in Target, I just knew that a subtle hint (via text with a picture) was down right needed. My hubs took the bait, SCORE!

CONTINUED MULTIPLE EXPANSION
Investment recommendation
We are increasing our price target following healthy appreciation for DDD shares over the past month. While share count increases slightly on recent secondary, we believe DDD can deliver upside to consensus estimates driven by strong printer and services revenue. We also expect multiple expansion as the company moves into the commercialization phase for Bespoke (carpal tunnel braces) in H2 of this year. Reiterate BUY.
Investment highlights
 3D Systems completed a 7.5 million (includes 1.3 million insider shares) secondary share offering on Friday, May 10 before the open.
The secondary offering was priced at $40/share and DDD raised $300 million through the offering. DDD intends to use the proceeds to
finance further acquisitions and for general corporate purposes.
 We are adjusting our model for the share dilution. Our C2013 EPS is revised down from $1.12 to $1.06 and our C2014 EPS is revised down from $1.62 to $1.52. Our revenue estimates remain unchanged.
Valuation
DDD’s price target of $50 (was $45) is 33x our C2014 EPS estimate of $1.52, in line with Stratasys (SSYS : NASDAQ :$83.39 | BUY), which is
currently trading at 34x our C2014 EPS estimate. In the last two years on a NTM P/E basis, DDD has traded in the range of 16x to 43x compared to
SSYS at 16x to 47x.

Perhaps it’s because I’m one of the last Canadians out there to have never done the cros

Perhaps it’s because I’m one of the last Canadians out there to have never done the cross-border shopping trek, but I really wasn’t all that excited about the opening of Target.

Seriously, not even a little bit.

To me, it was just another version of Walmart. A Walmart in which people apparently dressed better. Yay? When it was announced that Target was coming to Canada, and that this was going to produce a bidding war for consumers that lead us to prices as low as what our American neighbours pay, my first thoughts were roughly along the lines of “Pfft, right.”

That mental thought didn’t really change over the months that our gutted Zellers stores turned into new and improved Target stores. I anxiously awaited the opening of Simons. I dutifully waited for the opening of J. Crew. Target however? I heard about it on the radio the next day, shrugged, and thought maybe I’d go check it out.

Saturday rolled around and The Boy and I decided to check out one of the smaller locations that had opened up. It was still a gong show, with people waiting in long lineups with carts full of stuff (and people already returning things?)

The first thing The Boy and I both thought when we walked in? It looks like Zellers. An organized, brighter lit Zellers with more eye catching products, but we were still both immediately hit with the same vibe. I’m blaming the fact that both companies use(d) the same colour scheme, and the same style racks and shelving.

We wandered through anyway, and I was pleasantly surprised in some areas. Summer drink dispensers that I would have expected to be made of plastic at their price point were made of glass. Rather than printed serving trays that look like a throw back from the 70′s or 80′s, I was finding modern trays made out of reclaimed wood and glass. The same Libbey glassware that friends of ours had on their wedding registry at Bed Bath and Beyond last year were sitting on a shelf beside Riedel wine glasses. The Starbucks at the front was just a bonus.

We didn’t spend to long in the store. I picked up a couple packages of dish cloths to replace mine, which are starting to get rather… weathered? I wanted to find resealable glass drink bottles, but I didn’t have any such luck. The Boy isn’t big on crowds (or malls for that matter), so I put the dish cloths back and we left without buying anything.

Verdict: meh.

I’m on the early shift this week, which means I get off work right around the same time most people are getting back from lunch. Consequently, the stores tend to be a little less crowded when I shop after work. I decided I’d give Target another shot and check out the bi-level one that opened in West Edmonton Mall.

I’ve been looking for a couple oddly sized picture frames for a few months now so I could get some of the art I’ve acquired over the years up and onto the walls. It didn’t take too long to find what I was looking for. The price point was right around what I would have paid at Walmart, but it seemed like the corners on these frames were better constructed. I grabbed a cart and checked a couple frame sizes off of my list.

I’d like to get my sewing supplies up off the floor in the next couple months, so I wandered through the furniture section. The stuff I looked at had nice designs, but poor construction. Maybe it was just the samples they had put together, but I put the furniture I saw in the same general category as Walmart and IKEA furniture. Not that that’s necessarily a problem (almost all of my furniture IS from IKEA), it’s just that I’m at the point where I’d rather save up to buy fewer, well made pieces than another melamine flat pack with an alan key (or screw driver). I appreciated the number of different storage ottoman styles they had though.

I grabbed a couple of the aforementioned dish cloths and some dish towels to go with them. Nothing fancy. There were all sorts of coloured tea towels and whatnot, but I took a pass and grabbed the 5-packs of white ones. I usually bleach the kitchen stuff, so it works for me (it’s also WAAAAYYY cheaper).

I lucked out in the pharmacy section. There were a couple ~40% off “Store Opening Sales” that just happened to be on the products I use, so I stocked up on antiperspirant and tampons. TMI maybe, but if you’re near a Target and in need of either it’s probably a good time to check it out.

This store was my first encounter with a cart lift beside an escalator, so I absolutely had a geeking out moment watching that. The lift runs a little slower than the escalator, which is great because it means you have time to get on and off the escalator before your cart makes it to the top. Yes, this amused me. It also reminded me vaguely of the first time I was on a moving sidewalk that took me up a ramp. Apparently I’ve been using stairs for too long.

The grocery section was a surprise. There wasn’t any unpackaged produce or a butcher, but most of the remaining grocery store sections were there. Their price on bags of frozen fruit looked to be cheaper than what I’ve been paying on sale for my smoothie fruit, so I’ll definitely be keeping that in mind. Unfortunately there wasn’t much in terms of gluten free products, which is where I was hoping to find savings I’ll probably try grocery shopping here at least once to see how it compares overall.

There weren’t too many surprises in the clothing department from what I saw. There was a lot of fast fashion. I did notice a pair of black dress pants that appeared to be from a collaboration with another company. The fabric felt reasonably substantial, so it may be worth going back to check them out if I find myself in need of some new work pants.

I don’t know why, but I was surprised to see automotive and lawn care sections in the store. I guess I was still picturing Zellers as opposed to Walmart, because I know Walmart does tend to have those sections in their stores as well. I ended up grabbing a bag of grass seed, because it was priced lower than what I usually pay at Canadian Tire.

I ended up spending more than I intended to going into the store, but I can’t say that I regret any of the purchases because they were all things I was either running out of (antiperspirant, tampons, grass seed) or actively looking for (picture frames, dish cloths). From what I understand this is a common occurrence in this particular store, but I’m also going to partially lay blame on my lack of sleep.

All in all, having given it a couple looks now, I’d say it’s okay. It’s not American pricing, but I honestly wasn’t going to hold my breath on that one. It’s not the end all be all of shopping for me, but I saw things I could potentially see myself going back for during the summer (glass juice jugs).

How about you guys? Have you ever cross-border shopped? Have you been into one of the new Targets yet? How was your experience? If you’ve lived around a Target for an extended period of time, where does it fit into your shopping habits? Are there certain things you buy there rather than going elsewhere, or vice versa?

Ok, I must admit that I have spent alot of money lately to cheer myself up from constant revision. Today I received some goodies that I bought from last week. So here, CK lipgloss which is my favourite lipgloss of the year, it’s non sticky formula yet moisture feels great for dry lips, seriously recommend it! I also bought some Dainty Doll blushes to try out, I read the reviews apparently people said they are really pigmented. Of course I shall do another review on it when I use them. i also love the collagen eye gel patch, they are such a life saver especially during revision late nights that I been having! That’s all for now, going to study for the rest of evening, have a nice day darlings!
