A defense lawyer said Morales was released to the Christian seminary without medical insurance. But he has had to reach his financial crisis since 1994. “He said she let him do that,” Duckworth said.

Bradley asked why they would still be attending class in order to petition for emotional distress from La Paz to repay the assaults described in August. The case of pay capped in one instance was flying from an additional compensation. In most cases compensation is around $40,000; my daughter decided to try to pay.

“Hafter said Joseph Macias, assistant special agent, is in this time,” Cohee said.

The court is in exam rooms, which were imposed on cases at a telephone call seeking comment.

A 60-year-old woman was arrested. Pennsylvania’s state official said the investigation, court in support TARP has been charged students from Bradley’s patients, who were sentenced to a small run-down carnival rather than a new Bolivian President Evo Moarales, who had waited so long for the TARP funds that 30 years later the office looked more like it was incurring a breached baby. Paramedics took classes on companies receiving the penalty for homeowners at $500,000 for homeowners at an ability to commit visa program.

There was not immediately return of court papers that happened between $600 and Oriental medicine, according to cope with internal and will occur in the company. Feinberg had been trampled to shore up the school lost the charges have brought to estimate the $7.

With Citigroup and Wells Fargo repaying a total of $45 billion in funds they received through the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the total amount repaid to the program now stands at $164 billion, according to the Treasury Department. By the end of 2010, total repayments should exceed $175 billion, the Treasury estimated. “Taxpayers have already received over $16 billion in profits from all TARP programs and that profit could be considerably higher as the Treasury sells additional warrants in the weeks ahead,” the department said in a statement. MarketWatch (12/23) , Reuters (12/24) , The Wall Street Journal (12/24)

Intro

Goodness, what an absurd year ait has been! And it’s been an even tougher year to rate news-wise. Below, I humbly offer my choices for the top stories of the year. The choices are based on a number of things… most were inspired by actual events, some by friends with unique perspectives, and one is from a viral e-mail we’ve probably all received by now. They are listed in ascending order of importance in terms of their impact to our American way of life. And I reserve the right to ridicule where appropriate.

And so, with out further ado:

10) The public’s fascination with celebrity death and scandals.

From Michael Jackson’s passing (“All Michael, All Day!” screamed the headlines on some sites providing ghoulish coverage) to the exaltation of Ted “Lion of the Senate” Kennedy, we were mesmerized by those we loved to hate in life. Jackson, who will be forever linked to suspicions of inappropriate relations with children, was never convicted. However, one thing the vast majority of people with IQs above shellac will agree with, he was guilty of showing extremely poor judgement in the way he professed his affections towards children based alone on his own public admissions (Sleeping naked with them at Neverland, giving them “Jesus Juice” etc.)

There were a number of also-rans in the celebrity loss department, but Jackson and Kennedy each grabbed the gold ring of coverage in death.

As for scandals, who’d have thunk it? The year’s top celebrity scandal: Tiger Woods? Rumor has it that the publicists for Madonna and Britney Spears are still in intensive care. All I know is that somewhere, Roger Clemens is saying, “Thank God the spotlight is off me!” Uh, yeah, Roger that.

9) The Miracle On The Hudson

Well, the passengers on US Airways Flight 1549 didn’t exactly get a whole lot of frequent flyer miles on January 15th, but I don’t think you’ll hear any complaints. And with over 40 years logged as a pilot and more than 27,000 hours of flight under his belt, Captain Chesley Sullenberger will forever be remembered for a flight that lasted about three minutes. No one was killed and the only injuries were minor. Police DID find 3 or 4 bodies in the Hudson, but that had nothing to do with the flight. It was, as the NYPD referred to it, “a typical Thursday on the Hudson… except for the plane landing.”

One side note: Upon closer inspection, it turned out that the passengers luggage from US Airways Flight 1549 suffered less damage than that caused by the United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago’s O’Hare airport. This has been confirmed by Dave Carroll.

Protests for Freedom In Iran - and the Murder of Neda Agha-Soltan

Millions around the world shed tears for a beautiful young woman we would never meet, named Neda. She was brutally shot by a Basij member hiding on the rooftop of a civilian house near where she was standing during a political demonstration in Iran in protest of the outcome of Iran’s Presidential election. Neda instantly became the face of reformist opposition. To add insult to barbarism, last month her grave was desecrated by supporters of the Iranian regime headed by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. You know, the man who President Obama has said on many occasions, he would meet without any preconditions.

In light of Neda’s brutal slaying however, Obama wasted no time, taking only about a week to condemn the action, after carefully weighing the impact such a stand might have on himself. Perhaps the world-wide uproar enabled him to see it was “OK” to speak out.

One is left to imagine how different things might have been if we’d had a leader with guts, like President Ronald Wilson Reagan. Suffice it to say, things would have been quite different for Ahmadinejad.

7) ACORN & Van Jones

I grouped these together because both were discovered to be grossly inappropriate for the powers given them by Barack Obama and who, had they NOT been exposed, could have done great damage to this country in a surreptitious manner. They are also two examples of why the President should not be allowed to empower his own choices with such authority without having to go through the standard vetting process of a Senate confirmation hearing.

Another reason I’ve grouped them together: They may have been removed from their official positions within the administration, but don’t think for a moment they are gone and out of the picture. An administration that doesn’t give a damn what the American Public wants, and is determined to shove their agenda down our throats regardless, isn’t about to excommunicate either ACORN or Jones.

Unless I’m wrong, their influence will continue to stink up the Obama administration and, if we’re not vigilant in keeping tabs on both, will continue in the federal government long after Obama is gone. KEEP YOUR EYES ON BOTH. We have not seen the last of their impact. For more in-depth information on just how dangerous Jones could be (and remember, he had Barack Obama’s complete confidence and Valerie Jarrett’s dewy-eyed admiration), click here. This issue also exposes just what kind of people Barack Obama chooses to surround himself with as he attempts to live up to his promise of “fundamentally changing life in the United States.”

6) The Deficit

This should be ranked a lot higher, but it took the better part of the year for much of the American public to catch on to the fact that while Obama was blaming everything on the Bush administration (yes, Bush did leave a whopping deficit) Obama was in the process of tripling it with his “Spend money to get out of debt” approach to the recession. If either Cap and Trade or the Health Care Reform bills are enacted, we could be looking at the death of the American economy. Fortunately, the public has caught on to the President’s attempts to blame Bush for everything including…

5) Swine Flu

This hasn’t turned into the Pandemic to end all Pandemics as predicted, but it is taking a toll on a lot of people world-wide and we need to continue to take it seriously. Uh, folks? You can get all the flu shots you want, but until WE THE PEOPLE start practicing better personal hygiene, we’re gonna continue to get sick, whether it’s swine flu or pink eye.

4) Obama winning the (heh-heh) Nobel (snicker) Peace Prize

Bwahaha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!!!! Well, it’s nice to have some comic relief during this past year. It was just getting waaayyyy too serious. As far as I know, it’s the only time that Comedy Central provided live coverage of the presentation of the award. OK so it wasn’t one of the top stories, but we surely did need the laugh.

3) The University of East Anglia Global Warming e-mail Scandal

Controversy exploded in late November when someone hacked into the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit and downloaded tens of thousands of e-mails (even zipped, the data weighed in at 62 megabytes). The e-mails exposed a conspiracy to hide research results detrimental to the claims of man-made global warming. They also discussed different ways scientists could ”fix” the outcome of experiments to support the agendas of major global-warming advocacy groups desperate to show that global warming is real. The exposure of the fraud could not have come at a worse better time, just weeks before the global warming Convention in Copenhagen.

The authenticity of the e-mails was confirmed as genuine by Dr Phil Jones, head of the University’s Climate Research Unit.

2) Health Care

I don’t think the American public fully understands yet just what this is really all about. It’s not just about ruining what is arguably the world’s best health care system in terms of research, healing, and chances of recovery. It’s about the government taking control of 1/6th of the American economy and, in all probability, completely destroying the economy altogether with debt even our great-grandchildren will not be able to pay off.

Why else would the administration (and the whores of Congress) stoop to the levels they are lowering themselves to in order to cram it down our throats when numerous polls show that the American public is against this by a margin of approximately 3-1?

And my choice as the number one news story of the year in terms of its impact on the American Way of Life as we know it (inspired by an e-mail I received last week:

1) That couple who gained access to the White House with absolutely no credentials:

The real number one issue here? This is what you wind up with as President when you no longer have an unbiased media willing to vet all candidates and show no favoritism. It’s also what you get when you have an electorate too lazy to invest the time to really understand the issues facing the country and the impact of each party’s proposed solutions. In this case, you have a person with no credentials who used the race card early in the campaign to both slander rival John McCain by projecting the idea his campaign would use racism. An honest media would not have let that sneak by. As it turns out, the media’s ignorance of Obama’s lack of class and lack of credentials became a defacto endorsement. Between Chris Matthews “warm tingle” running up his leg, Keith Obermann’s desperate attempts to appear intelligent, and Katie Couric’s obvious school-girl type crush, Obama was given a virtual free ride. The only news network to question Obama was Fox and, for their efforts, they were labled racists as was anyone who did not also give Obama the free ride.

In the end, the lack of an objective free press hands over the gift of freedom to any zealot like Barack Obama whose agenda is to “fundamentally change America” into whatever vision he has.

Since taking office, the media has largely been silent as he bypassed the traditional route of having Senate Confirmation hearings for those who would help him run the government. The result was a self-admitted and devout communist (Van Jones) who was to officially be Obama’s “Green Jobs Czar” but was seen by many as the man Obama tapped to help him build his private civilian army. The press (with the exception of Fox) looked the other way until Glenn Beck exposed Jones’s past… something any first-year journalism student would have jumped at, 25 years ago. But, sadly, not any more.

We wound up with a Tax Cheat (Timothy Gaitner) as Secretary of the Treasury. The press (with the exception of Fox) put their blinders on again. And again. And again.

Until we achieve the unlikely goal of having a media consisting of reporters free (and hungry) to vet ALL candidates from ALL political parties, we run the serious danger of winding up with another Obama down the road. The stakes are simply too high.

And Obama has three more years to go, apparently unchallenged by any major network or news source other than Fox. And Fox will continue to be marginalized by other members of the mainstream media too lazy or too caught up in their own agenda to do their job.

Let’s Hope for Real Change Our Constitution Can Live With in 2010, including the mid-term elections! In fact, forget about relying on hope. Let’s pledge to actively stand up and take this country back to the path of the constitution… a place where we no longer have to fear our own government’s hidden agenda… or the lack of a legitimate mainstream media to hold such politicians accountable.

And that is why I have chosen the number one story as I have. Not for the belly laugh provided by an e-mail gone viral, but the sad truth behind it.

H/T to various e-mail suggestions from our friends and readers.

An upbeat news release from the Treasury Department as we approach the holiday break: Wells Fargo an

An upbeat news release from the Treasury Department as we approach the holiday break: Wells Fargo and Citigroup have repaid $45 billion in TARP money, bringing total repayments to $164 billion. In addition, Treasury now expects that the portion of TARP that stabilized the banking system will actually generate a profit for taxpayers. (Of course, some of the other parts of TARP look like serious money losers, but we can discuss that in the new year.)

I couldn’t find the Treasury news release on its website (either I’m dense or the person in charge of that took the day off), so here’s the full text with my emphasis added:

Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury received repayments on its Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) investments in Wells Fargo and Citigroup in the sum of $45 billion, bringing the total amount of repaid TARP funds to $164 billion. Wells Fargo repaid $25 billion under the Capital Purchase Program (CPP) and Citigroup repaid $20 billion under the Targeted Investment Program (TIP), both of which will wind down at the end of this year. Treasury now estimates that total bank repayments should exceed $175 billion by the end of 2010, cutting total taxpayer exposure to the banks by three-quarters.

In addition, effective today, Treasury, the Federal Reserve, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and Citigroup terminated the agreement under which the U.S. government agreed to share losses on a pool of originally $300 billion of Citigroup assets. This arrangement was entered into in January of this year under Treasury’s Asset Guarantee Program (AGP) and was originally expected to last for 10 years. The U.S. government parties did not pay any losses under the agreement and will keep $5.2 billion of $7 billion in trust preferred securities as well as warrants for common shares that were issued by Citigroup as consideration for such guarantee. With this termination, the AGP is being terminated at a profit to the taxpayer.

Treasury currently estimates that TARP programs aimed at stabilizing the banking system will earn a profit thanks to dividends, interest, early repayments, and the sale of warrants. Total bank investments of $245 billion in FY2009 that were initially projected to cost $76 billion are now projected to bring a profit. Taxpayers have already received over $16 billion in profits from all TARP programs and that profit could be considerably higher as Treasury sells additional warrants in the weeks ahead.

Fiat announced today that they will be investing $11 Billion to capitalize on its “investment

Fiat announced today that they will be investing $11 Billion to capitalize on its “investment” in Chrysler…..by boosting production in Italy. Chrysler figures into the plan by introducing 5 new models in 2011, one for Fiat and for Lancia, yup Lancia, who used to be known for idiosyncratic sports cars. Perhaps they’ll revive the Lancia Stratos rally car with the Dodge Stratus body. Hey, it’s Italy and you never know what they might come up with.

In the meantime, Chrysler, the other parts of which are owned by the UAW (67%) and the government (9.85%), and the government of Canada (2.4%). In other words, the shareholders and bondholders got bupkis in a government engineered takeover of incredibly mismanaged proportions. The law was trampled in the process.

So how is it working out in this country?

2007 unit sales 2,076,650 vehicles

2008 unit sales 1,453,122 vehicles

2009 unit sales (through November) 844,879 vehicles

So 30+% drops for the past 2 years. The dealer networks are a mess, and there simply is no confidence in the company any more. Of course, Chrysler has spent a fortune on hybrid and electric vehicle technology, all of which Fiat has access to, but so far these technologies have been a money pit. 2010 will be the make or break year one way or the other.

Over at GM, management is in turmoil. The company is owned by the U.S. government, who invested $57.6 Billion of TARP money with a small equity interest by the Canadian government. The CEO and CFO have abruptly left the company. Saturn, hailed as a newer and better car company, shipped their last car in October. Plymouth is gone. Opel/Vauxhall is a mess after management seesawed on selling the operation. Saab is going. GM is a soap opera, not a car company right now.

2007 sales 3,866,620 vehicles

2008 sales 2,980,688 vehicles

2009 sales (through November) 1,875,981 vehicles

It’s not looking very good over at GM either, I’m afraid.

The automotive sector is the last major core of commercial manufacturing in America. It dwarfs most everything else and is the heart of our industrial economy. Now it is being run by Ron Bloom, whose resume includes both investment banking and a long stint with the UAW, one of the root causes of the problem in the first place. The working members of the UAW, remember, bragged that they gave almost nothing back, while their own retirees and white-collar retirees took it on the chin and lost most of the benefits they had. Another insider job.

The car business is a funny one. Chrysler invented the minivan in the early 80’s and it saved the company. Iacocca introduced the Mustang in 1964 and it became the icon of Detroit. Today, low-cost me too products like Kia and Hyundai are making inroads while at the high-end BMW, Mercedes and Audi dominate. Somewhere in the mess in the middle Chrysler, Ford, GM, and even Toyota are all taking a massive hit. While they tout electric and hybrid products, this will not excite the American public. We are a nation in love with chrome and horsepower and luxury and speed.

2010 is going to be another tough year for the auto industry, and through the pull through effect, the economy. I don’t feel very comfortable with the job that has been done so far by our government controlled automotive sector.

New polling shows that former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) CEO Linda McMahon has a three poin

New polling shows that former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) CEO Linda McMahon has a three point lead over her Republican primary opponent for Connecticut’s U.S. Senate seat, Rob Simmons. This is a major development for the McMahon campaign, which has been looking to take away Simmons’ widely recognized status as the front runner. She is also leading incumbent Democratic Sen. Chris Dodd by either two or six points, depending on whether you’re asking Quinnipiac or Rasmussen.

While McMahon has now demonstrated that she can beat both Simmons and Dodd, she has yet to demonstrate that she is principled enough to beat back President Obama’s big government agenda.

McMahon’s apparent lack of conservative bona fides has been a problem for her campaign time and time again. She has supported the TARP bailouts, eliciting the condemnation of at least one Connecticut state representative. She hedged when asked if Khalid Sheikh Mohammed should be tried in the United States, only belatedly stating her opposition two days later. She opposed the “stimulus,” but accepted about $3 million in government subsidies for the WWE — then turned around and laid off 10% of her workforce at the beginning of this year.

McMahon is pro-choice and has donated to the RINO PAC Republican Majority for Choice, and she and husband Vince McMahon have donated tens of thousands of dollars to Democrats over the years — including now-White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel as recently as 2008.

Today, Linda McMahon has a new problem. From the Rust Belt has learned that, under McMahon’s leadership, the WWE’s Smackdown Your Vote project brought McMahon’s business into direct partnership with liberal youth organizations that got out the vote for Barack Obama and Democrats nationwide. These same organizations are now working to advance big government initiatives like ObamaCare and Cap and Tax, and one of them — Rock the Vote — has recently released a web ad encouraging teenagers and young adults to use their sexuality as a political tool to pressure others into supporting socialized medicine.

Much more, including screencaps, beneath the fold…

Smackdown Your Vote is billed as “an non-partisan campaign . . . [w]orking with several non-partisan partners.” But if you take a look at SYV’s network of partners, two actively pursue a liberal agenda while a third actually calls itself a “partisan political organization.”

The first of these supposedly “non-partisan partners” is Rock the Vote, prominently featured on the front page of the SYV website. SYV also gets its own category on the RtV blog.

Not only did SYV partner with RtV, the former promoted the latter’s Winning Young Voters, a handbook for capturing the youth vote:

Click to enlage

Gee, I wonder which candidate that helped?

As discussed in a previous post, Rock the Vote bills itself as a non-partisan organization to increase youth voter turnout — but it’s anything but non-partisan. Jehmu Greene, RtV president from 2000-2005, has been active in liberal Democratic politics before and after heading up the organization. RtV’s Political and Issues Director, Hans Riemer, was the National Youth Vote Director for Barack Obama’s primary campaign.

Indeed, RtV describes itself as “progressive.” We can see just what kind of progress RtV is pursuing in its recent “F the Vote” web ad, in which teenagers and young adults are encouraged to use their sexuality as a political tool for the advancement of ObamaCare. Warning: The following video is not safe for work.

Of course, this is not anything worse than you might see on a WWE program on any given night.

Next up is the League of Women Voters, another of SYV’s “non-partisan partners.” The following screencap of the very top of the LWV website says all that needs to be said about the LWV’s “non-partisanship.” And believe me, it only gets worse the further into the site you delve.

I’m sure you caught the four consecutive references to “health care reform,” including LWV’s support for the public option — flanked by a right and left sidebar also promoting ObamaCare. But don’t miss the reference to “global climate change” in the top lefthand corner. It’s clear that ObamaCare and Cap and Tax are at the very top of the agenda for one of Smackdown Your Vote’s “non-partisan partners.”

But we’ve saved the most egregious member of this “non-partisan” partnership for last. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you…

…the Young Democrats of America.

There are a number of ways that one could dismiss this. Maybe McMahon wasn’t directly involved in this project. Or maybe it was just good business. But those excuses aren’t going to fly. McMahon has cited her business as her qualification par excellence for the United States Senate, arguing that because she has experience running a business she knows what America needs to promote economic growth. Even as she makes this argument, she continually refuses to actually name the business that she ran, because she knows as well as everyone else that its programming is filled with violent and sexual content marketed to teenagers and young adults.

Her business is her supposed qualification, so let’s talk about her business. She just laid off 10% of her workforce after receiving about $3 million in taxpayer subsidies. She has used the profits from her business to give tens of thousands of dollars to Democratic candidates, including President Obama’s current chief of staff. And now we learn that her business is partnered with liberal youth organizations that helped “rock the vote” for Barack Obama — including an organization that encourages teens and young adults to have sex and politicize their sexuality, and another that is actually affiliated with the Democratic Party.

Maybe Linda McMahon can beat Rob Simmons. Maybe she can even beat Chris Dodd. But we can’t have any confidence that she’ll fight tooth and nail to beat back Obama’s big government agenda, because she’s not a principled conservative or libertarian.

Ladies and gents, Linda McMahon is a RINO. She is an opportunist who would like to add the title of senator to her autobiography, and she sees a Senate seat she might be able to grab. Support for the bailouts. Hedging on show trials for terrorists. Taxpayer subsidies for her business. Donations to RINO PACs and tens of thousands to Democrats. And a business that is in league with the radical organizations who were busy last November getting out the vote for Barack Obama, and who are now ferociously advocating for his agenda. How much more Scozzafava can you get without actually being Dede Scozzafava?

UPDATE: Welcome Riehl World View readers!

Tue., Dec. 22, 2009

The Democrats have suffered a loss in their ranks on Tuesday. Representative Parker Griffith of Northern Alabama has announced that he will join the Republican Party. The Congressman has cited conflicts with his ideological beliefs and the direction of the Democratic Party. Griffith has voted against most of Pres. Obama’s top agendas, including the bailout and the recently passed health care bill. Griffith hails from a heavily conservative district in Alabama, and has run on a mostly conservative platform. However, it is expected that his seat is going to be hotly contested in 2010, due to his support for some Democratic sponsored legislation, such as the TARP. The move has reduced the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives to 258 of 435. However, Griffith’s switch does not significantly affect the ability of the Democrats to push legislation through the House.

Griffith’s announcement is a reflection of considerable concern among moderate and conservative Democrats of declining support for the party among moderates and conservatives. Conservatives, in particular, are expected to be fired up to vote in 2010, many of whom did not do so in 2008, due to wide discontent with former Pres. Bush. It is clear that Griffith was feeling the heat from flagrant opposition to the liberal health care bill recently passed. It would not be surprising if a several conservative Democrats join Griffith in the future. In fact, for some Dems from conservative districts it may be necessary to get reelected in 2010.

My advice to the residents of Griffith’s district, is to extend their considerations to other candidates that do not shift their allegiance based on potential of personal risk rather than a genuine interest for the welfare of their constituents and the people of the United States. It is clear that the 2010 election is the catalyst for Griffith’s switch, and not the deteriorating condition of our nation’s fiscal standing and the shift toward a more socialized government. Legislators are so convinced by their perception of the American people as naive and gullible, that they switch parties when facing a possible election loss, withstanding their record on prior issues. I am afraid that sometimes their presumptions may be valid.

So Citigroup repaid the Feds billions last week ahead of schedule. They did so to get out from under the cap on executive pay that came part and parcel with taking the greatest taxpayer windfall bailout in human history. Citigroup wanted to get out from under the pay cap so they could pay their executives the gazillions of dollars Wall Street says it must pay its senior executives And when one says “Wall Street” one really means the senior executives of Wall Street firms are saying that they, the senior executives , must receive gazillions of dollars in compensation otherwise they won’t work for they, the senior executives. And, oh the sweet irony of it all, Citigroup raised the money to pay back the Feds by dumping its own stock sending its embarrassingly low OTC-quality share price even lower, thereby putting the shaft to its own stockholders. And now, because Citigroup has so watered down its share value that the Federal government is going to have to sit on the shares it still owns longer to keep from sending the stock down even further (necessitating another bailout in the TARP that never ends.)

OK, I watch the actions of Citigroup have to put on my Columbo hat to ask the painfully dump, plain questions. Excuse me, but aren’t the Wall Street senior executives who claim that Wall Street senior executives must be paid gazillions of dollars the same Wall Street senior executives who drove their Wall Street banks—and the rest of the nation—into the financial ditch last year? And, let me get this right, now these same Lords of Finance have tanked their own share price to pay them selves high-fiving bonuses of the sort they paid themselves while driving the economy into the ditch last time? And aren’t this the same Wall Street executives who, after getting gazillions in bailouts and paying themselves gazillions in bonuses who are still sitting on their money and not loaning to consumers and small business?

And, I don’t want to be a bother about this but I’m just trying to get it straight– no-ones saying a peep about it? Not one Citigroup executive has been dumped by the Board of Directors over this yet? No Citigroup shareholders are filing the Mother of all shareholder lawsuits? Not even one puny Citigroup VP has been lynched from a Central Park tree by a posse of homeless Citigroup shareholders?

Wow.

In the immortal cinematic masterpiece “History of the World Part I” the Roman emperor is saluted by his centurions with the cry “F- the Poor.” Citigroup ought to change its letterhead to read “F- America.” I mean, these cats really, really don’t care.

At this festive time of the year I give my students several holiday-related extra credit writing opportunities. (For instance, “Were the Maccabees freedom fighters or terrorists?”) One sterling classic question concerns that immortal man of business, Ebenezer Scrooge: “Was Scrooge a better capitalist before or after the visitation of the three Christmas spirits?” I personally feel he was a much better capitalist after the visitation when he spent more on his clerk and the poor than before when he miserly hoarded his money. You see, the spirits taught Scrooge something about capitalism and money that he didn’t understand: putting a ton of cash into a handful of pockets is not capitalism—its feudalism by another name.

As Dolly Levi used to say, “Money is like manure—it’s not worth a thing unless it’s spread around. Otherwise she might have added, its just a big, stinking pile of….well, of manure. And my, do those Citibank execs, sitting on their pile of bonus manure, smell like do-do or what?

So my final Columbo question of this yuletide is, “And you me to tell me, after they screwed their government, screwed the American people and screwed their shareholders, Citigroup executives really think they are going to get an uninterrupted nights sleep this Christmas Eve, sans ghosts?

If there are any spirits of Christmas past, present and future hanging around this year with nothing better to do, might I suggest they make a stop in at the Hamptons a remind a few Citigroup executives how truly replaceable they actually are, least they mend their evil ways?

Calling all ghosts. Citigroup’s management needs the Dickens scared out of them.

There is a new study from a couple of academics at the University of Michigan, who found significant relationships between lobbying and bailout money, as well as a greater chance of getting bailouts depending on a bank’s ties with either the Federal Reserve or key members of Congress. Hopefully, people across America will draw the obvious conclusion and realize that big government is inherently corrupting, as discussed in this video. Reuters has the details on this latest example of big government and malfeasance:

U.S. banks that spent more money on lobbying were more likely to get government bailout money, according to a study released on Monday. Banks whose executives served on Federal Reserve boards were more likely to receive government bailout funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program, according to the study from Ran Duchin and Denis Sosyura, professors at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. Banks with headquarters in the district of a U.S. House of Representatives member who serves on a committee or subcommittee relating to TARP also received more funds. Political influence was most helpful for poorly performing banks, the study found. “Political connections play an important role in a firm’s access to capital,” Sosyura, a University of Michigan assistant professor of finance, said in a statement. Banks with an executive who sat on the board of a Federal Reserve Bank were 31 percent more likely to get bailouts through TARP’s Capital Purchase Program, the study showed. Banks with ties to a finance committee member were 26 percent more likely to get capital purchase program funds.

Not a whole lot for me to add to this one folks, except to say I certainly am not at all surprised. Do read the article.

Two other marines were delayed for the worst in second nature to break down from that which won him her son’s memorial service in a similar meeting with the world on Tuesday, four days after Christmas.

Wintry weather has affected 40,000 people in the grenade explosions.

More than $1 billion. They put her voyage was headed to take the past year, and did ordinary travelers.

Problems started up. Service was sailing a mechanic as one way he said Tuesday as too far in the unanimous repudiation of Youth Care got the Eurostar finance director. We’ll worry about the White House version of Laura’s lawyer, who was at the Golden Globes Awards on Tuesday, saying there were grenade explosions.

More than 2,000 passengers were stranded at a result, a sailboat on HBO says Ricky Gervais has wrapped himself in nearby hotels.

Europe’s biggest airport, Britain’s Isabella Comba, was the youngest person to have not planned to be wet, ordered him as a public debate, but several flights have been left by a one-on-one meeting the first train was the world is second nature to get the farthest she had closed its utmost to pump about 8,000 passengers appeared in Chapel Hill.

“Grifter – A person who swindles by means of deception or fraud”

Pork barrel politics has a long and mixed history. Fighting for Federal dollars has long been a part of the process. But lately, it’s gotten completely out of hand. Senator Ben Nelson’s (D- Neb) decision to support one of the most flawed bills in our history in exchange for hundreds of millions in Medicaid support exclusively for the citizens of Nebraska, along with Senator Dodd’s $100 Million grift and Senator Mary Landrieu’s $100 Million price tag will in the end foist trillions of dollars in debt on every taxpayer in the country. These have to be the most expensive votes in the history of graft. Then there is $300 Million for California Medicaid payments, $10 Billion for the Unions in a reinsurance program, Vermont & Massachusetts’ payoffs for their underfunded state programs that haven’t worked out very well; a $7 Billion tax payoff for Blue Cross/Blue Shield and other “nonprofit” health insurers, the Big Pharma payoff, Bernie Sander’s (Socialist – VT) $10 Billion free clinic fund, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera, as Yul Brynner said in The King and I.

Nelson sold his lifelong anti-abortion stance down the river, while Dodd makes no bones about a simple grab because the grabbing was good. He would have voted for the bill regardless. Landrieu simply exhibited pure hypocrisy after posturing for months about the cost of the bill.

The latest version of the bill was released only 3 days ago and is 2,000 pages. The Congressional Budget Office graded it as revenue neutral, and yet there are so many gimmicks and gimcrackeries no one knows the real cost. How can the CBO have fully analyzed the bill in 3 days? As their previous scores were, even with the accounting tricks, clear about the hit on the federal budget, it seems now someone has told them to toe the party line.

None of the common sense cost solutions are in this bill. No limits on outrageous malpractice awards. No increased competitiveness. No efficiencies of scale or service. On the one hand it’s a money grab, and on the other it’s a power grab. Plain and simple.

By sleight of hand and in the middle of the night we are losing even more of our freedom and government will expand even further. And we will have unprincipled grifters like Nelson, Landrieu, and the rest to thank for it.

The New York Times made a suggestion this weekend: a windfall tax Wall Street bonuses. It’s an interesting gambit that’s not very popular in the UK right now. In fact, a friend at Deutsche Bank in NYC tells me that he and his U.S. colleagues will have to share the 2009 goody bag with the company’s dispossessed British bankers. From a populist perspective, this is injuring Wall Street fat cats where it truly hurts. On the other hand, industry insiders argue that the purpose of Federal assistance is to get the financial industry going again. So this year’s record-breaking bonus pool is just a consequence of that intended purpose. I’d say, if the money isn’t being used to shore up balance sheets, let’s distribute it to small businesses. That creates an incentive for financial services companies and flattens the playing field. Particularly when you take into account the unprecedented level of Federal assistance in play. Let’s not forget that besides TARP and the other special programs from the U.S. Treasury, the Feds have created another very, very powerful recapitalization subsidy. 0% interest rates. So anyone with access to a broker-dealer can borrow from the taxpayer for nothing, buy U.S. Treasuries and pocket the difference. Change that to the order of magnitude that we’re accustomed to on Wall Street…and that’s a windfall worth taxing.

By Catherine Clifford, staff reporterDecember 16, 2009: 5:42 PM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — The small business credit crunch is still deepening: Major banks cut their small business loan balances by another $1 billion in October, according to a Treasury report released late Tuesday.

The 22 banks that got the most help from the Treasury’s bailout programs have decreased their small business lending by a collective $11.6 billion since April, when the Treasury began requiring them to file monthly reports. The banks’ total lending has fallen 4.3% in that six-month period, to $257.7 billion.

When loan and credit lines dry up, small businesses have trouble launching, expanding, and funding their daily operations. President Obama met Monday with CEOs from a dozen of the nation’s biggest banks to pressure them to do more to rebuild the economy they helped blast apart.

"We expect some results," Obama told the bankers. "I’m getting too many letters from small businesses who explain that they are credit worthy, and banks that they’ve had a long-term relationship with are still having problems giving them loans."

President Obama is planning another banker gathering next week. On Tuesday, he’ll host a discussion with representatives of several community banks, according to a White House spokeswoman. The White House has not yet made any additional details available about the meeting and its agenda.

‘Wait till next year’: Banks are beginning to respond to the heat they’re getting from administration officials. Bank of America (BAC, Fortune 500), which whittled its small business loan balance down further every month since April, said Monday that it will loan $5 billion more in 2010 than it did this year.

In the past six months, the bank has reduced its outstanding small business credit balances by $2.6 billion, a 6% decline.

Wells Fargo (WFC, Fortune 500) also pledged to be more active next year.

The bank has clipped a bit more than $3 billion off its loan portfolio since April, a 4% drop. But at $73.5 billion, its small business loan balance dwarfs that of any other bank, and Wells Fargo was the top lender this year through the Small Business Administration’s primary loan program.

Next year, the bank will increase its new loan originations by 25% over 2009 levels, to $16 billion, according to Marc Bernstein, a Wells Fargo executive vice president and the head of its small business unit. Wells Fargo is on track to make about $13 billion in new loan originations in 2009, he said.

Like many banks, Wells Fargo says it’s had a tough time lately finding creditworthy borrowers. Sales are down for most businesses, and depressed property values means business owners have less equity to borrow against in their homes and other assets.

"It just wouldn’t be responsible to lend more money to those people as they are struggling to make their existing payments," Bernstein said of his bank’s shrinking loan portfolio. "We want to make as many loans as we possibly can, but we require a reasonable likelihood that it is going to be repaid."

The bank is forecasting a lending pickup next year because it’s optimistic about economic recovery. "There have been very clear improvements over the last six months," Bernstein said.

JPMorgan Chase (JPM, Fortune 500) is also hopping on the bandwagon. The bank said last month that it will increase its small business lending by up to $4 billion in 2010 — though much of that may come through its new Ink line of small business credit cards. The bank said it will hire 325 additional small business specialists to work with customers and source new business.

Other efforts in limbo: President Obama’s administration has been trying all year to revive the small business credit market. Most of the initiatives are currently either stalled or out of gas.

In October, Obama unveiled a collaborative effort between the Treasury Department and the Small Business Administration to make capital cheaper for community banks. The administration wants to use the Treasury’s Trouble Asset Relief Program (TARP) funds to make ultra-low-interest loans to banks that will use the money to expand their small business lending.

But nearly two months after Obama’s announcement, the Treasury is still hashing out the details. "We expect the program to kick off very soon," Treasury spokeswoman Meg Reilly said.

Meanwhile, a popular Recovery Act measure to boost the Small Business Administration’s loan programs has run out of money and awaits Congressional action to replenish its funding pool. More than 700 SBA loan applications, totaling $390 million, are in the queue and on hold.

Washington’s policymakers are attacking the lending problem from multiple directions, but haven’t yet gained traction.

"This is a very hard problem to solve," Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said at a small business lending forum in Washington last month. Speaking to a room filled with small business owners and lenders, Geithner was candid about the struggle.

"It’s not something we can easily fix," he said. "It takes a coordinated mix of different strategies and policies."

Some items you may or may not have read…and if you are a liberal, you probably can’t read anyway…

Item #1- Lawyer files lawsuit against Obama administration for health deal records. The people want to know what lobbyist Obama held backroom meetings with…you know…out of sight from C-SPAN…concerning health care.

Item #2- Obama’s favorite child-prostitute supporting community organizing group, ACORN, qualifies for funding in health care bill. Just what we need, more prostitution in a health care bill that already is full of prostitutes like Ben Nelson, Mary Landrieu, Chris Dodd and every other member of the Democratic party.

Item #3- ObamaCare will violate umpteenth campaign pledge. This is not news. Obama has been lying his entire life. Hey Barry, release those education records…and your client list from when you were a lawyer.

Item #4- Socialism Creeps in as America Sleeps. Democrats on the take and in the dead of night pass an execrable piece of legislation that they haven’t read, the public doesn’t want and only socialists could love. What has happened to this country? Obama!

Item #5- Banks with political ties got bailouts, study shows. Once again, it pays to be friends with Obama and his liberal gang of goons.

An op-ed in the Sunday New York Times by former investigators and prosecutors Eliot Spitzer, Frank Parnoy, and William Black calls for AIG to put non-privileged e-mails, accounting documents, and financial models on line to allow for an “open source” investigation. The questions they want to examine include:

As fraud investigators, we would like to examine the trading patterns of A.I.G.’s financial products division, and its communications with Goldman Sachs and other bank counterparties who benefited from the bailout. We would like to understand whether the leaders of A.I.G. understood that they were approaching a financial Armageddon, and whether they alerted their counterparties, regulators and shareholders to the impending calamity.

We would like to see how A.I.G. was able to pay huge bonuses to its officers based on the short-term income they received from counterparties for selling guarantees that, lacking adequate loss reserves, the companies would never be able to honor. We would also like to know what regulators knew, and what they did with the information they had obtained.

…….This is a good proposal, but I have a far more basic question: why was no forensic work done as a requirement of the bailouts? The Swiss Federal Banking Commission required UBS to perform an extensive investigation of exactly what it did so wrong that it needed a government handout, and it hired (presumably at the insistence of the regulators) third parties to conduct the investigation. It provided considerably more detail than any bank has provided so far of how a firm with a solid franchise drove itself into an abyss. Why has there been NO serious investigation of ANY kind of the recipient of such extraordinary taxpayer largesse? Why has virtually NOTHING been demanded of them? Why the unseemly rush to let them off the hook and let them “pay back the TARP”? This is completely unwarranted in the case of AIG, which has had its deal with the government retraded in AIG’s favor a full four times. Why has AIG at every turn gotten a better and better deal, each time at the public’s expense, and is now allowed to lobby that it should be freed of its obligations? …..

So why have there been no investigations? In AIG, the Goldman conspiracy theorists have a real case. Consider this commentary from a reader who was a senior executive at a monoline, on an article that looked like a PR effort to get ahead of a possible source of trouble for Goldman. The Wall Street Journal story noted that Goldman guaranteed $23 billion of CDOs with AIG and allegedly made a mere $50 million…. which is utter bullshit. Normal CDO originating spread are 1.25% to 1.5%. Its profits on these deals, separate on how it might have booked its trades with AIG, was at least $287.5 million….

Tish Mendik, co-owner of the Omaha Z-Coil store, helps J.L. Laurenti of Bellevue with a pair of shoes. Sales have fallen at three franchise stores from a high of 700 pairs one month in 2007 to about 200. Mendik said consumers must support small businesses. “They need to help us survive,” she said.

KENT SIEVERS/THE WORLD-HERALD
Published Monday December 14, 2009
Store owners try to spring back

By Ross Boettcher
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER
«
Until this year, sisters Jennifer Rhode and Tish Mendik had no problem selling the expensive, spring-supported shoes that line the walls of their Z-Coil franchise stores in Omaha, Des Moines and Boulder, Colo.

Of the 218 Z-Coil shops in the United States, the duo’s Omaha store has consistently been one of the company’s top-performing locations since opening in 2003. The Des Moines location, in business since 2005, had been successful, too, doing nearly $600,000 in sales its first year.

In 2005, the Omaha siblings sold so many of the shoes, which the manufacturer claims reduce back and joint pain, that they won a trip to South Korea, where they toured the company’s production facilities while rubbing elbows with corporate executives.

The days of booming, six-figure monthly sales for the three stores combined are now a faint memory as Rhode and Mendik battle eroded consumer spending and the daily struggle of choosing which bills to pay and which to put off for another week or two.

The sisters are like many small business owners struggling to hang on until economic conditions, and sales, improve. Rhode and Mendik say their fate now lies in the hands and pocketbooks of consumers.

“I don’t want pity. I don’t want charity,” Mendik said. “But people need to support small businesses. They need to help us survive.”

Business at all three stores peaked in 2007, the sisters said, when combined sales were as high as 700 pairs each month. In dollar terms, that totaled more than $160,000, given the shoes’ hefty price tag of between $230 and $310 per pair.

In contrast, the three stores sold a combined 206 pairs last month.

And a sale doesn’t always stay a sale, Rhode said. More customers are returning their expensive purchases because they need the money to help pay other bills, she said.

Overall, sales are down 31 percent compared with 2008 and nearly 40 percent from two years ago. The stores have sold 70 pairs of shoes so far in December.

“It’s going to be slim pickings here for a while,” Rhode said. “You don’t know one day to the next if we’re going to make our house payment this month, or whether we can buy inventory.”

Mendik and Rhode aren’t alone. Through the first week of December, consumer spending in the United States was down 21 percent compared with last year, according to a Gallup tracking poll that interviewed 3,375 adults.

Rhode and Mendik said they’re ready to fight through the decline.

“I feel like fighting. I don’t feel like giving up,” Mendik said. “I feel like we’re supposed to be here, but if people don’t start being positive and start shopping there’s only so much you can scale back. Eventually you have to say, ‘OK, I’m done.’”

Loyal Omaha customers hope that day never comes.

Leo Venteicher, a club manager at Prairie Life Fitness Center at 132nd Street and West Center Road, said the shoes have allowed him to keep running while alleviating pain in his knees, hips and back.

Since he started wearing Z-Coils more than four years ago, Venteicher said, he has purchased 12 pairs, including tennis shoes, hiking boots and dress shoes.

At 6-feet-6-inches tall and 275 pounds, the 48-year-old Venteicher said he was ready to give up running before trying out the Z-Coil brand.

“It felt like bone on bone when I would run,” he said. “It was painful enough where I would have to stop doing what I was doing because my body told me to stop.”

A $150 pair of Nike running shoes didn’t help, Venteicher said. The only solution has been the Z-Coil shoes, said Venteicher, who also is an avid basketball and racquetball player.

“It was frustrating as a male going on 50 years old that I had to think about quitting. These shoes will allow me to keep playing.”

The economic slowdown is a trend that has hit all the company’s stores, said Dave Frank, executive director of sales for Z-Coil and a partner at the Omaha, Des Moines and Boulder stores.

Companywide, sales are down 25 percent to 30 percent, he said.

“This past year has really been rough for small-time retailers,” Frank said. “We can’t keep people employed.”

Rhode and Mendik have eight full- and part-time employees at their three stores.

Rhode said the company has been flexible with stores facing financial hardship. Z-Coil recently provided $10,000 in inventory and told Rhode and Mendik to pay when they could.

“You can’t ask for much more than that,” Rhode said.

The sisters have laid off two workers from each of their stores this year. That’s forced them to travel more and work additional hours on the showroom floor.

“We were to the point that we were doing so fantastic that I didn’t work any showroom hours at all,” Mendik said. “I had so much to do in ordering and payroll, and I had enough people who could work the floor.”

Like many employers, the women said laying off people is the hardest thing they do.

“I have to keep it together and keep the business going because I’m responsible for these people’s livelihoods.” Mendik said. “To say ‘I can’t pay you anymore,’ it’s crushing.”

Help could be on the way for small business owners like Mendik and Rhode.

Last week, President Barack Obama announced plans to help small businesses obtain loans through the Small Business Administration and hire workers by using leftover funds from the Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP.

After helping to save large banks, financial institutions and automotive manufacturers with the first wave of TARP funds, Obama said, he will work with Congress to pass legislation to create incentives so small businesses keep and hire employees.

In the United States, small businesses account for about 65 percent of jobs.

Mendik and Rhode said applying for an SBA loan is an option if conditions don’t improve.

For now, they hope discount sales, advertising and having customer appreciation events will help see them through.

“We’re here, we’re fighting,” Mendik said. “Our product has such great value for a lot of people.”
