//trying to refresh my memory with some old characters…

The great, black monster smelled of the ocean and rotting fish. Shaped like a horse, but with razor-sharp teeth and seaweed instead of hair, the Kelpie gazed intently at Tatsumi as it rose out of the black water. Tatumi’s head felt cloudy, like it had been stuffed with cotton. The memory of her mother, slashed to ribbons in front of her, flashed before her eyes. The image was closely followed by a jolt of pain in her chest.

It wasn’t like there was anything left for her, here.

Tatsumi slowly reached out her hand towards the Kelpie, still thinking of her mother, who had left her behind.

I’m coming, mother.

Suddenly, Tatsumi was being yanked away from the demon horse. She was in shadow; there was a figure standing between her and the Kelpie.

“You can’t have this one,” growled a male’s voice, his back to Tatsumi.

“And I suppose you’re going to stop me?” The Kelpie’s voice was raspy and high-pitched. It scraped at Tatsumi’s ears, tearing through her. She longed to run, to get as far away from the predator as was humanly possible, even though she knew running would be futile.

But then again…

“You’re here because I allow you to be, Kelpie. Touch my things, and it’ll be the end of you. No more food, no more safety. That was our agreement, was it not?”

The figure’s voice was dangerous. Confident. He had complete control over the beast, it seemed. Strange. What power could he have over a demon?

“…Very well,” the Kelpie rasped, reluctantly. “I won’t touch her. But if she enters my lake–”

“You will very graciously escort her to the shore,” the voice interrupted. There was a brief, tenuous pause, each staring the other down.

“…Whatever you say, master.” The last word was a hiss, poisoning the air before the Kelpie slid back into the water, disappearing from sight. Tatsumi’s knees buckled, but before she hit the ground a strong arm shot out and caught her.

“Th-th-thanks,” Tatsumi stuttered, as she began to shake violently.

“I wouldn’t recommend coming here in the future,” the figure warned, his face hidden in shadow. Tatsumi could feel his chest vibrating as he spoke. “I might not be fast enough next time. Kelpies aren’t exactly known for obeying orders.”

“How–?” Tatsumi raised her head to try and look into her savior’s face, but he turned away and wouldn’t look at her.

“You probably shouldn’t be asking too many questions. Saori will lead you back to your room. You should sleep, you can barely stand.” Tatsumi realized that he was supporting nearly all of her weight, and immediately tried to shift back onto her own legs, and nearly fell over as a result. They wouldn’t hold her. Exhaustion swept over her, making her eyelids droop, and the effort it took to remain standing increased dramatically.

“On second thought,” the figure mumbled, sweeping Tatsumi up into his arms.

Tatsumi was asleep before the mysterious figure that now held her in his arms had taken a step.

“It was in Hiroshi’s nature to avoid confrontations. In fact, he was almost masochistic in his passivity.”
