Another Tattoo Fail Check Out Birdman’s latest…

I saw this over at One Minion’s Opinion and thought I had to share it with my minions. I’ll bet Jim West will find this another example of Total Depravity™.

A Church in Seattle (reported in the Tuscaloosa Times) has gives out tattoos to congregants as part of their services.

The sight of a woman being tattooed live on the altar accompanied by the sound of a buzzing ink gun provided a startling backdrop to Sunday’s evangelical sermon.

Your parents’ church service this was not. In the drive to stay relevant, the Gold Creek Community Church has been hosting a series called ‘Permanent Ink’ that featured Sunday’s live-tattoo finale.

The Mill Creek, Wash., church is not exactly staid — booming 20-minute rock sets launch regular sermons — yet the pastors acknowledge this series was pushing societal norms.

‘We’ve said from the start that we are not advocating tattoos — nor discouraging them,’ said pastor Larry Ehoff.

‘We think of it as amoral. It’s neither immoral nor moral, it’s just the choice of a person.’

Ehoff said the church is telling the same story of Jesus as always, it’s just finding different ways to tell it.

As the story reports, the “most famous symbol” emblazoned on a person  is 666, the mark of the “Beast” (of course, some manuscripts have the number as 616, but that’s a story for a different tattoo parlor).

But there’s also mention in the Bible of markings on Jesus, saying he is the king of kings and lord of lords, [Pastor Dan] Kellogg said.

Another congregant who volunteered, Erica Armendariz, was getting work done on an arm tattoo she calls her ‘faith sleeve.’

Faith sleeve, yeah, ok, whatever. Somehow it just seems to me to be another way some Christians try to build an alternate reality that looks just like the world they are trying to leave but is stamped with all the proper ideological brand. Some people only where one designers underwear, some people get Christian tattoos. Not a lot of difference that I can see.

It’s not that there is anything wrong with Christians getting tattoos.  Of course, Christians are not bound by the Old Testament injunction against getting tattoos. but when it becomes part of the service and others watch it being done as such, one has to wonder how disconnected they really are from the roots of their tradition. What next, tying your shoes for Jesus?

There is even a “Christian Tatoo Association“, and they could probably put you in touch of an “artist” who would give you what you want, tattooly speaking, of course.

Their caption on this image reads: ” The writing is Hebrew and is Song of Songs 2:16.”  It is a good thing they have a disclaimer that reads “Religious Tattoos makes no guarantees concerning translations in tattoo pictures. The onus to verify a translation rests with the person who wishes to get a tattoo.” The Hebrew writing is, well, lets just say “directionally challenged.”

This Is Stupidity An I guess This Is What Happens When You Get Bored….

Well I drew up a huge version of the tattoo to show off all the details and decided I wanted the tree of life green. I’m pretty sure i’m going to the artist in the next week and to make my deposit…

Could my tarot card be warning me about my tattoo? Cause maybe I dont know what i’m getting myself into … I do, but at the same time, I know its going to hurt, especially on my rib cage. But I want it sooo bad I think i’m going to be able to handle it.

At the beginning of the school year, we were informed about an assignment that would be due much later in the semester.  The assignment was to make a book of flower shots, and as cool as making a soft cover book sounded, I didn’t like the idea of filling it with lame shots of flowers.  Before long I came up with a better idea, although it didn’t say we could do this, I assumed it would be okay to be a little more creative and take a bunch of pictures of people with flowers.  I decided to do that to show off more of what I am interested in (portraiture).  I began brain storming and coming up with a bunch of photo shoot ideas.  One was having a girl dressed up all pretty, sniffing a flower, with a gas mask.  I titled it, “Pollen Allergy” and you can see it here.  It was meant to be a humorous shot.

A few days later I was just browsing new models on the modeling site I regularly visit, and I came by a girl from London who has flower tattoos all up the side of her body (Angela).  She just signed up to the site about a week prior, and had only done one shoot before.  I sent her a message and asked her if she would be willing to pose nude with some real flowers in the studio at school, and she was all for it.   We sent a few messages back and forth and planned some other shots to try out too, before we actually met to do the shoot.

We shot on a Saturday around noon.  I met her at the bus stop at Fanshawe, then we headed to the studio.  We started off by trying an idea I had for a low key shot, with an old fashioned candle holder, you can see it here.  I was having trouble getting the candle to stay on the holder without breaking at the bottom.  Angela managed to make it work in a matter of seconds by digging the wax out of the bottom with her keys first.  Why do girls have to be so smarter than us guys?

Shortly after we proceeded to shoot the nude flower shots I wanted for the book.  We spent quite a while with the flowers, experimenting with different poses, and different flowers.   The one that you see at the top right isn’t uploaded to any of my other sites, it’s unique to this blog post.  You can see the rest of the best shots on my flickr page in this set.  We did some other shots, like the, “See, Hear, and Speak No Evil” shot.  That was her idea, and it turned out really well.  You can see that in her set too.

All in all our shoot went really well.  We got a ton of good shots, and all the shots we were going for, we both have benefited from the shots we got.  Angela is an awesome person, and an excellent model.  Often I would give her a pose, take the shot, and immediately she would change her pose, and continue for a while without any instruction.  This being only her second photo shoot, she is very natural at modeling, and if she keeps it up, I’m sure will have no problems getting known in the area.  She also has a really nice “blank” face, or an “un-posed” expression.  I definitely would like to work with Angela again in the future, and I recommend her to other professional photographers.

I completed the flower book, and it’s being marked right now.  I get to see my mark on Wednesday.  If anyone is interested, let me know in the comments, and I’ll reply with the mark I got on the book.

Lil Wayne was spotted with a new tattoo this weekend, no suprise as he has too many tats to count or remember. This new tat is a collection of stars on the left side of his face. Baby decided to add another tat to his body also, a huge star on the top of his head. I understand tattoo’s are addictive, but at what point are you just inking your body and the tats no longer have meaning?. Not to mention, they’re skin will appear gravely sick in 20 years with all that ink on it. Peep Wayne and Birdman’s new tats below…

So the day before yesterday, it seemed to be tattoo-night as about 4 different TV programmes mentioned them. My favourite of which of which was on Argumental (no, I’ve never watched it either) where this comedian bared his random tattoos including my personal favourite: monkeys fighting robots.

Of course this didn’t add to my fear. No. I’d been reassured by friends that tattoos didn’t hurt (except for going over bone and colouring in). It is mostly the unknown that evokes fear. The way to get over it is to do it but you don’t know whether you can do it.

What do you do in the time leading up to the event to stop turning into a nervous wreck?

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I visited family in Cleveland, Ohio. One of my cousins whom I visited just opened up his own tattoo parlor, which was an exciting accomplishment for him.

My 22 year old cousin, Art’s brand new shop is called, Estilo Tattoos. He has been in the business of permanently inking people’s bodies for three years already and is quite talented. His shop also does piercings and while appointments can be made, walk-ins are also welcome.

I recommend any of you who are thinking of getting a tattoo (and if you are in the Cleveland area) to go to my cousin’s new (and very clean, I might add) shop. His goal for the new parlor is to accommodate customer’s custom requests. You can view some examples of his work on his site. Ok. So I realize that I kind of bummed out on my 30 days thing. *shame* I’ve been pretty busy lately and I kind of lost all motivation to do this after I stopped running. Weird, right? I should probably start running again. :-\

My first tattoo - on the bottom of my foot

I just thought this quote was quite awesome. In the west, especially the United States, I think that we view body art – especially tattooing and piercing – as a sign of individuality and freedom, but we don’t really consider the part of conformity. Marines as well as other branches of the army get tattoos as signs of devotion, prestige, and honor. In other cultures, some get piercings, body art, or change their hair as initiation into that particular culture.

I think that it’s just amazing that body art can cover such a vast array of aspects in every culture. Makeup, clothing, hairstyles, piercings, tattoos, henna, almost everything can be considered body art.
