t’s been an amazing start of new work, let me tell ya. It feels like a brand new year. I’ve specifically made myself go out on school nights to live a life again, and there’s this tingly spice of a carpe fucking diem attitude breezing in the wind.

I’m happy to report that I’ve been getting full nights of slumber without sleep aids for over a month now, which has generally made me more present in every day’s moments in general. A life of meaningful work, a life of experiences that involve me completely in the moment – I’ve got to keep this in mind the next time I consider shutting myself in, acquiescing to that dastardly fellow Complacency.

And so, here comes a cultural event that seamlessly combined these elements that were missing in my life. It is dynamic, it is immersive, it is work, it is creative – it took 24-hours from ten artists in one room at lOAKal: Carpe Diem. Carpe Diem gave blank canvases to fiftyseven-thirtythree’s Eddie Colla (work in progress above), Lisa Pisa, Zoltron, and more. The live art session – to which the public was openly invited – wrapped up last weekend, but the final pieces will be on display for tonight’s First Friday (or Oakland Art Murmur, whatever you want to call it) and onward.

I’m hoping to check out the 8×8 panels tonight at the pop-up gallery, but you can drop by six days a week:

WEDNESDAY 19th OCTOBER 2011

Tonight’s lesson I didn’t seem to enjoy as much as the previous ones; I think it was because I was night shift and had to go to work afterwards, plus I had a bit of a headache niggling boooo.

TOPIC

We managed to fit most of the class’s homework in, bar two of them. There was a varied interpretation across the class as to what the homework entailed; some writing a couple of pages of an actual story, some not involving three characters and some unsure of what object was the focus of their story as they included more than one. At first, I thought I hadn’t done enough, it turns out I had done what was required. The majority of the class used either the glass or the book.

I was the only one who chose the gun.

The feedback came in the form of the following ideas:

* DNA on the gun could be traced back to Taylor Morgan then traced back to the pawn shop then Mrs Bertram

* Consider the legalities of weapons and pursue this aspect in the story

* Find out that the deceased Mr Bertram has been involved in various Serious and Organised Crimes over the years and this leads to the recovery of the house his widow now lives in as part of Proceeds of Crime

* Mr Bertram could actually be killed by someone else who had the gun

* children playing with the gun could be relatives of Mr Bertram (however this could be too much of a coincidence – see below about coincidences)

* Why is Taylor running away from the police – explore and expand this

* What kind of gun? Could it be a small handbag gun so it is small enough and not too heavy so that the child Abigail is able to lift it and believes it more so as a toy? Handbag gun? In that case it could be more linked to Mrs Bertram than her husband.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNT TODAY

* Can’t have coincidences

* Happy endings have to be earned, not jammed onto the end of the story

BOOKS TO READ

* This week it was a film: Adrian Brody – The Pianist

HOMEWORK

No homework this week woohoo as it is half term next week so we are off

Love Missuswolf xx

Line-up:
Taylor Williamson
Taylor Morgan
Kyle Smith
Jason Gillearn
Matt Fulchiron
Greg Fitzsimmons

Matt Ballgame billed this show as the one year anniversary…reality is…this show has been going on for over a year and just keeps building momentum. The audience keeps getting bigger and the comedians keep getting better. Ballgame’s show is a step above everyone else’s. From a audience perspective…you get to see the top headliner’s in the country and the best up and comers in the city. This isn’t a workout room…and Ballgame doesn’t throw up 12 comedians so that the audience just gets bored as shit. Even I don’t like that. For the comedians…you get a highly organized highly professional show. Great environment…great mixed crowd…and a line-up with other great comedians. You go in…you laugh hard for an hour and a half…and you our out. Best comedy show in the city!

This show was packed with frat guys…which threw a few of the comedians…very interesting to watch their reactions.

Taylor Williamson…solid.

Taylor Morgan…first time seeing her. She was good…dirty…I always like dirty and it worked well with this crowd. We talked before the show and she told me she was going to break out that material…so it worked.

Kyle Smith…I like Kyle a lot. His nickname joke is hilarious…Kyle “The Hookerstabber”. Awesome.

Gillearn…always solid. He never gets old to me. He’s not big nationwide…but in L.A. he’s the man.

Matt “The Fullcharge” Fulchiron…not gonna lie…he was off his game. The crowd may have thrown him.

Greg Fitzsimmons…what can you say…he’s a genius. I would love to spend an hour talking comedy with Greg. He’s awesome.
