Steam rising from the beast

The HAC was played at the Tournament Club of Iowa (TCI -link). After 27 well fought holes, the South of Wilden crowd has won their first trophy in several decades. In my matches, paired with the stalwart MS, aka Cutter, we fought hard against our opponents, RT and TB, but driving accuracy, length, and good looks cannot match laser wedges and dropped twenty foot putts. My hat’s off to our opponents.

I have one comment to make about TCI. Designed by the inimitable Arnold Palmer, it is an anomaly in Iowa. Unlike much of Iowa which is flat as a tabletop, this area around Polk City above the dam is topographically more like the moderately hilly parts of Pennsylvania farm country. There are ravines and low buttes. Arnie, using his deep experience with golf as an instrument of pain, has created a monster that demands to be fed golf balls.

These are not subtle tricks of the light that cause golf balls to wink out into moderate rough like at Wakonda. No, its craters are like giant salad bowls filled with knee deep vegetation that swallow up those Titleists, Bridgestones, and Nikes like grains of table salt shaken into a green shag carpet.

Golf is about the mind. Each of us have fears that certain golf courses use to guide us away from our purpose of reaching the hole. I grew up playing golf in Florida, and I welcome water and sand. Florida, like Iowa, is usually flat, but water and beach sand are rare commodities here in Iowa and are usually my allies in matches against the land locked. Hills and elevation changes add a third dimension that I often find confounding on approaches, and the penalties of a lost ball are much higher than for water or sand.

But despite all this, everything is trumped by the ability to get the ball close and dropping that putt, and that is where I failed. It’s back to the lab.

The US navy has become home for one Turks and Caicos Islander living in the United States and as one of the youngest sailors is quickly moving the ranks. Our Nikira John spoke to the sailor in Pensacola Florida just before he was deployed to another Us state.

Talks of a Bahamas-Turks and Caicos Islands federation are resurfacing once by former Premier Michael Misick.

TCI Education officials are reporting an increase in the number of CXC passes this year.

The real-time tech world of Twitter kept the people of Iran in touch as they formed together to protest against corruption in the recent election.  Today, the people have turned their protest focus onto Nokia – the cell phone giant being accused by the Iranian people of aiding the Iranian government to spy on them.

According to The Guardian, the demand of Nokia handsets in the country have fallen by 50% as reported by the wholesale vendors in the Iranian capitol.

Why is all this happening?  Why now?  In 2008, Nokia Siemens Network sold the Iranian government a cell-phone network monitoring system while they were in process of expanding the network coverage.  In its defense, the Nokia-Iran partnership stated that it’s a system currently in place in “dozens of countries.”  This statement however didn’t dim the anger of the Iranian people.  In addition, the fire has been fueled by citizens stating they’ve been held based on phone and SMS archives.  The outrage comes into play by the fact that these records could have only been obtained by the cell-phone operator TCI in conjunction with Nokia Siemens Network’s technology.  A large portion of the cell-phone using population in Iran has stopped using SMS technology as a result.

Here’s a little Texas Benching that I caught in the past week. Caught some real nice stuff including some canadian heads.

Ya llevamos un par de semanas con el vuelo operativo, de lo cual me alegro, pero tengo un par de cosas que se me han acumulado en el tintero desde que salió el vuelo con Air Europa.

No tengo posibilidades económicas de poder cruzar el charco ahora mismo (ni tan siquiera para irme un fin de semana a Gran Canaria) pero estuve indagando por “curiosidad profesional” sobre el famoso vuelo.

Curiosas las declaraciones del Presidente del Cabildo de Tenerife

Sobre el mes de mayo fui a hacer una reserva para la semana del cuatro de julio (es decir esta en la que estamos ahora) y me encuentro que sale 560 euros, lo cual es un precio acojonante para el vuelo que es.

Pero… resulta que lo mío vía Madrid y sale 460 euros CON ESCALA EN TENERIFE y yo me quedo patinando porque el vuelo directo sale cien euros más caros que ir con escala.

Inmediatamente cojo el teléfono y llamo a Air Europa a ver que pasaba y me comentan que la compañía funciona así.

Les comento si es posible que vuele desde Tenerife comprando ese vuelo y me dicen que no, pero que si existe la posibilidad de pedir que a la vuelta me dejen las maletas en Tenerife.

Genial, tener que ir a Madrid para coger un vuelo de Tenerife.

Cosa de una semana después una persona me consulta para ir a Los Angeles y le estoy mirando precios y tal cuando caigo en la cuenta de que Air Europa (UX para los frikis de la aviación civil) está en la alianza SkyTeam.

En Estados Unidos Skyteam tiene a Delta/Continental que aunque no tiene hub en Miami (como lo tiene American Airlines) tiene algún que otro vuelo con el que podría hacer conexión.

Total me pongo a mirar y había una conexión Tenerife-Miami-Texas (no me acuerdo si era Dallas o Houston) y luego un vuelo a Los Angeles.

Intento pillarlos online y me es imposible, vuelta a llamar Air Europa.

Les explico la situación y me dicen que eso es “imposible”, pues con OneWorld no es tan imposible ya que el año pasado fui a Miami y con dos reservas diferentes de dos compañías (American e Iberia) mis maletas fueron de La Palma a Miami.

Pero se ve que en Air Europa no están tan modernos.

Siguiente paso decido llamar a Continental a Estados Unidos (llamada gratuita vía Skype, no soy rico) y me mira la señorita.

Resulta que puedo comprar el Miami-Texas-Los Angeles por 300$ pero no me garantizan la conexión (como si haría OneWorld).

Le pido que por curiosidad me mire una conexión directa que me garantice las maletas y los billetes cueste lo que cueste.

Y costaba…. ojo al dato 4500$ EN TURISTA.

Es decir que si los compraba por separado se me quedaban en 900-1000€ pero si los compraba juntos eran 3000 €.

Es algo de traca lo de Air Europa…

Acabo de mirar por curiosidad los vuelos del 10 al 17 de octubre:

TFN-MIA-TFN con Air Europa 556 €
MAD-TFN-MIA-TFN-MAD Air Europa 495 €
MAD-MIA-MAD Iberia 526€

Aún así 556 euros es un precio acojanante en mi opinión.

Aprovechen para ir a Miami o para venir a Canarias! (no me llevo comisión).

En mi opinión el lugar para montar la plataforma “tricontinental” es Dakar pero eso es otro asunto totalmente distinto.
