In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) we see an emphasis on the kidneys as holding the essence for l

In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) we see an emphasis on the kidneys as holding the essence for life. Out of everyone I have worked with over the years, 98% of people have some stress to their kidneys. This also includes children. Stress, toxins, thoughts, water intake, food choices, quality of food, exercise, pH, sexual activities, etc. all contribute to stress in the kidneys.

In Asia, they are typically not fond of drinking a lot of fluid because it harms the kidneys. Yet, here in the USA, we are instructed to drink half your weight in water to flush out the toxic lifestyle we have from living in America. But not drinking enough pure water and being dehydrated also puts a strain on the kidneys.

American boys and teens are different than in the traditional Asian culture. Sex and bodily fluids is a badge of honor here, yet it begins to deplete life force and life essence very early on. This depletion continues through adulthood until men lose their active sex drive or develop Erectile Dysfunction (ED). The erection of the penis during sexual excitation is mediated by the Nitric oxide (NO) that is released from nerve endings close to the blood vessels of the penis. NO also regulates adrenal function and endocrine function. We generally see a correlation between ED and imbalanced hormone levels, which is traced back to endocrine and adrenal function. In teens, testosterone can be too high. In middle age men, testosterone tends to be too low. Kids are now maturing faster and much more is accepted and available now to kids so they have a mature life style at way to young of physical or emotional age.

Kidney stress is often shown in the quality and color of hair. Hair is one of the parts of the body that the body will sacrifice first. If the body is off, the hair will stop receiving nutrition and energy, thus the graying and thinning that occurs.

Kidneys also have an impact on bone marrow. So much so that now they are doing kidney and bone marrow transplants at the same time. I think we can look at Nitric Oxide (NO) as the key player. Release of NO around the glomeruli of the kidneys increases blood flow through them thus increases the rate of filtration and urine formation. The overall production of NO is decreased in kidney stress. The brain’s glial cells produces sodium nitrite, in presence of organic acid, it breaks down to nitric oxide for use. Nitric oxide is used by the bone’s marrow cells, which in turn creates stem cells or at least allows stem cells to further develop. The problem occurs whenever people eat acid forming food, have toxicity, physical stress, emotional or mental stress, or heavy metal poisoning causing the condition known as acidosis or low pH. Whenever this happens, the sodium nitrite breaks down into nitric oxide before the sodium nitrite reaches the bone marrow and stem cell production begins to slow down. When people are low on stem cells, we see the hair thin and begin to lose color or turn gray.

Something to help? Here are my recommendations:

Stop all mineral supplements for 3 days. Check your pH. Restore the bicarbonate reserves in your intestines, organs, and tissues. The remedy for regeneration of marrow cells is: Squeeze one whole lime (about 8 teaspoon), plus 1/2 teaspoon of aluminum free baking soda in 1/2 glass of water, taken twice a day. To get some improvement it would generally take about 3 weeks for the body to have sufficient amount of bicarbonates and alkalinity for nitric oxide. This total process usually takes a total of 6 months to completely saturate your tissues.

Increase the voltage of your cells. An ionic foot bath, infrared sauna, walking on the sand on a beach, touching the Earth with your feet, etc. are all ways to increase cellular voltage.

Silver and Gold Colloidals will also help.

Go Raw- a 70%+ raw diet works well.

He Shou Wou is a good TCM supplement to also add in.

Simplify your life and remove any negativity or stress including thoughts, people and situations.

Yep – it’s that time of year to give thanks to consumerism. Eat up, DVD junkies: you won’t get another meal until you’re through spending the cold night in front of Best Buy. Here’s my pick for one new blu-ray release to get your hands on. Let the violent hoarding commence!

Also, if twelve hour food comas are more your thing, here’s a comedy coming up on TCM this week that’ll give you an excuse to spend the weekend indoors. Here’s One to Rent, One to DVR for the week of 11/17/09 – exclusively at ForReel.net.

RENT

Funny People (2009)
dir. Judd Apatow
Availability: DVD & Blu-ray (11/24/09)

Why?: Yeah, it’s probably an hour too long. Yeah, it’s two or three movies in one. Still, however, “Funny People” charmed me almost entirely. The film suffers terribly in a last act in which all of the main players do something completely out of character, but beyond those false-notes it is certainly as entertaining as Apatow’s previous efforts. Sandler, Rogen, and Mann are all terrific – perhaps among the best “forgotten” performances of the year.

DVR

The Importance of Being Earnest (1952)
dir. Anthony Asquith
Playing: Sunday, November 29th, 7:00 PM (central) on Turner Classic Movies.

Why?: An adaptation of the play by Oscar Wilde, “The Importance of Being Earnest” remains breath-takingly funny over one hundred years since it’s theatrical premiere. This 1952 film adaptation stars Michael Redgrave and Michael Denison as John and Algernon, but most noteworthy is the brilliant performance by Edith Evans. As Lady Bracknell, she completely devours every scene she’s apart of. Watch for the famous delivery of “a handbag?!”.

At 4:45PM this afternoon TCM will show Nicholas Ray’s A Woman’s Secret (1949), a film I’ve never seen and won’t be able to catch due to a couple of prior obligations; however, if you find yourself near a TV with cable, you could definitely do worse than to check this one out. According to imdb, A Woman’s Secret was the production during which Ray met the actress who’d become his second wife, Gloria Grahame (who happens to be, as my devoted reader[s] ought to know by now, a CineMadison favorite). I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: TCM’s presentation of these second-tier Rays is invaluable. After all, the great thing about Ray’s oeuvre is that the second-tier’s a lot like the first: ruddy, combustible, disheveled, volatile, etc.

Jahrhundert dazu?“

Director, Hal Ashby’s first film, the notoriously hard to find, The Landlord is being shown on TCM on Friday, November 20th at 10:00 p.m.

It’s the first feature from Hal Ashby, and is an absolute must for any fans of the director. Not only is it a great film, but for Brooklynites it’s a veritable time capsule of pre-gentrified Park Slope and all it’s surrounding areas.

http://www.tcm.com:80/tcmdb/title.jsp?stid=22826

And in case you’re wondering: Hmmm, that sounds a lot like the Joe Pesci laff-riot, The Super? You’re right, it’s a total rip-off (The Super is the rip-off, that is — ironic considering how un-super it is). But it’s almost too sick to consider the two in the same breath, and truthfully I don’t even know why I did it…

American boys and teens are different than in traditional Asian culture.

The remedy for regeneration of marrow cells is:

Squeeze one whole lime (about 8 teaspoon), plus 1/2 teaspoon of aluminum free baking soda in 1/2 glass of water, taken twice a day. To get some improvement it would generally take about 3 weeks for the body to have sufficient amount of bicarbonates and alkalinity for nitric oxide. This total process usually takes a total of 6 months to completely saturate your tissues.

Increase the voltage of your cells. An ionic foot bath, infrared sauna, walking on the sand on a beach, touching the Earth with your feet, etc are all ways to increase cellular voltage.

Silver and Gold Colloidals will also help.

Go Raw- a 70%+ raw diet works well.

He Shou Wou is a good TCM supplement to also add in.

Simplify your life and remove any negativity or stress including thoughts, people and situations.

Alternative health remedies are increasingly important in the health care marketplace. A new study in the Journal of Consumer Research explores how consumers choose among the many available remedies.

“Examples of the wide array of health remedy options available to consumers include drugs, supplements, acupuncture, massage therapy, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (to name a few). Such medical pluralism is common in both developed and developing countries and raises the questions: How do consumers choose among health remedies, and what are the consequences for a healthy lifestyle?” write authors Wenbo Wang (New York University), Hean Tat Keh (Beijing University), and Lisa E. Bolton (Pennsylvania State University).

The authors use “lay theories of medicine” to explain how consumers choose between Western medicine and its Eastern counterparts, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurvedic medicine.

“Western Medicine is primarily concerned with the material aspect of the body and views all medical phenomena as cause-effect sequences, relying on rigorous scientific studies and research that seeks empirical proof to all phenomena,” write the authors. “On the other hand, TCM and Ayurvedic Medicine favor a holistic approach, view the mind and body as a whole system, and rely upon inductive tools and methods for treatment.”

Based on a series of experiments and surveys in the United States, China, and India, the authors found that consumers prefer TCM (over Western medicine) when uncertain about the cause of an illness (i.e., diagnosis uncertainty)—because a holistic medicine tolerates uncertainty better than Western Medicine. Similarly, consumers prefer TCM (over Western medicine) because of lay beliefs that TCM offers an underlying cure (versus symptom alleviation by Western Medicine).

“These findings add to the growing debate over the regulation of health marketing and the delivery of health care, the role of direct-to-consumer advertising, and marketing efforts to promote a healthy lifestyle,” the authors conclude.

I remember when I was about 15 or 16 years old I saw for the first time a strange, black and white symbol similar to the one in this posting’s picture. I knew vaguely that it was Asian, but otherwise it seemed exotic and unknowable so I filed it away with all the other new things that a 15-year-old experiences. It continued to pop up in various versions on and off for the next 15 years but it always remained a mystery. Until that is, I went to acupuncture school where I learned three things: the name of the symbol is the Taijitu (often pronounced tie gee too), that it is a succinct symbol representing the five rules of yin and yang, and lastly, that the concept of yin and yang is a theoretical way of observing and explaining everything from the smallest spaces of the smallest atoms, to the human body and its functions, to the energetic movements of the universe. Although that sounds complicated and still mysterious, it really isn’t. Once you know the 5 basic rules, there are some very practical uses for knowing about yin and yang.

Before starting on the five “laws” of yin and yang, however, we should first talk about pennies. Pennies? Yep, pennies. As one of my illustrious teachers once pointed out, typically when a westerner thinks of the face side of a penny that’s what we’re thinking about: the face side of the penny. Pretty straight forward right? Well, for anyone familiar with the yin and the yang of things you can’t think of the face side of the penny without also thinking of the tail side. In fact, the face side cannot exist without the tail side and vice versa. Stated in another way, the ancient Chinese came to see in the course of their everyday lives that everything around them had a dual aspect. There is both night AND day. There is no no brightness without dimness. Movement is tied to stillness. There is no upward without downward. Heat is the companion of cold. All of these pairs are listed in the classic textbook: Chinese Acupuncture and Moxibustion. This is the first law of yin and yang: Relative Opposites. You can entertain yourself for hours thinking of all things yang and all things yin. (Disclaimer- maybe only acupuncture geeks can spend hours but try it out anyway!)

From the above examples: day, brightness, movement, upward and heat are all yang. Night, dimness, stillness, downward and cold are yin. The following are some fun yin yang pairs I thought of while in school:

Yang Yin
The Rolling Stones The Beatles
Coke Pepsi

Here are some others:
exhalation inhalation
outward inward
12:01pm to 11:59pm 12:01am to 11:59am
spring and summer fall and winter
male energy female energy
heaven earth
gold silver
revealed hidden
sun moon

fire water

youth elder age

This opposition between the yin and yang members of a pair sets up a struggle between, and a control of, each other. A good example of a practical application of this law is when you apply a cold pack to an inflamed muscle. When something is inflamed there is always heat. By applying its opposite, cold, you bring the body back into a more balanced state. It works in other ways too. If you suffer from Seasonal affective disorder (i.e. too much darkness), it is usually therapeutic to expose yourself to more light. The taijitu symbol shows this first law by dividing the circle of everything into equal sections of black and white.

The second law states that yin and yang can further be divided into yin and yang. Seasons are a great example of this idea. We’ve already stated that spring and summer are yang and that fall and winter are yin. Within the yangs and yins are further delineations of yangs and yins. Looking at all four of the seasons, there is a general warm time of the year and a cold time of the year. But spring isn’t summer and fall isn’t winter. We can say that winter is the yin-ist of the yin time of year. When spring begins, yang energy begins to grow within yin winter. At first, there is more winter than spring. Gradually, the signs of spring increase until it becomes more spring than winter. This is called the yang within yin time of year. Spring then transforms into summer when yang has grown until it reaches the zenith of summer or yang within yang time. Summer then slides toward autumn when yang energy is becoming less and yin energy is growing. This is the yin within yang time. Eventually autumn becomes winter and we reach the lowest levels of yang but the strongest yin before yang once again grows in a pattern followed year after year. Also, think of a clock. Midnight is the most yin time while noon is the most yang. 12:01pm starts the growth of yin energy but still, 12:01pm has much more yang than 9pm and 9pm has more yang than 11pm. The “S” curve of the taijitu represents this idea.

Thirdly, yin and yang are interdependent. They cannot be separated. A good practical way to explain this law is to say that the yin of the human body equals substance. In other words, things that are tangible like body fluids and organs. The yang of the body is its functional aspects like metabolism. Without metabolism nothing happens to organs or body fluids. Without organs and body fluids metabolic function would not be necessary. In the taijitu, there is nothing separating the black from the white parts.

The fourth law states that yin and yang inter-transform. You have probably experienced this when you’ve caught a cold. You may start with an aversion to cold with achy muscles and clear or white nasal discharge (a yin presentation) that either gradually or suddenly changes to yellow or green nasal discharge with a feverish feeling and an aversion to heat (a yang presentation). The yin “dot” within the yang and the yang “dot” within the yin of the taijitu shows this idea.

Lastly, Yin and yang are inter-consuming. Let’s look at the body again for practical application. For a functional activity to take place, or yang energy to activate, there must be a certain amount of yin used. For example, for digestion to work there must be a presence of yin to be consumed. In this case food is the substance of yin. Conversely, if there is a yin substance, such as the water of edema, there must be a yang function to consume the yin e.g. the lymphatic return process. Again the “dots” of yin and yang within their opposites illustrates this fifth law.

Although it can take a lengthy explanation, the concept of yin and yang is simple at its core. Yin and yang are at the base of understanding the dynamics of literally everything under the sun. (and further!) It is also the basis of traditional Chinese medicine. Health is a harmonious balance of yin and yang within the body. Disease is an imbalance of yin and yang. Death is the separation of yin and yang and traditional Chinese medicine is meant to adjust your yin and yang to restore relative balance.

Here’s to balance for everyone’s yin and yang!

I thought I left behind my Saturday cartoon habit in elementary school but realized it’d just morphed into my early Sunday morning movie ritual. I do try to sleep in like everyone else but it’s impossible to explain to my two yorkies why they should let me on this one day of the week (either they don’t want to learn or they can’t learn). Not that I mind too much since it’s the only day I don’t feel obligated to check the weather, headlines or facebook first thing. Cafe con leche and TCM is like cake for breakfast. It doesn’t even have to be particularly good, as long as it’s black and white and has that low crackle soundtrack of sizzling bacon. Maybe I never got Dorothy opening the the sepia door to Oz, but its become my own way to test the waters for the week ahead. A Thin Man movie, it’s going to be a good week. Destry Rides Again, could be trouble. Fred and Ginger, might be s’marvelous.
