Saturday Sep. 4th – Sandy Beach, Oahu – Town vs. Country

The best surfers in Hawaii will go head-to-head at Red Bull Rivals to win bragging rights and the other teams’ boards.

Red Bull Rivals is a one day surf event pitting Oahu’s legendary shores (North Shore vs. South Shore) against each other in a head to head surf competition for ultimate island bragging rights.

To keep things fair, the event will be held on the Eastside of Oahu at Sandy Beach (neutral territory).

Teams will compete for:
-Each others’ surfboards (used in competition) instead of a traditional purse (similar to racing for pink slips)
-The ultimate surfing bragging rights

Ten surfers for each team were chosen by online voting (see rosters below); each team must have at least 1 girl and 2 groms (17 or under)
A “ringer” will be allowed to be a part of each team and does not have to be disclosed until day of competition (this can be any surfer from anywhere in the world)

HIC Team rider Kelia Moniz recently visited HIC Japan and put on a small demo!

“Winning the King of the Groms feels super good,” says Josh. “I didn’t think I was going to able to win it, so I’m super stoked! I’m really excited to be going to France and I’ll be bringing my dad.”

Josh carries an assortment of man-sized maneuvers, no doubt inherited from his father, former professional surfer Tony Moniz. He made his presence felt with a recipe of solid surfing, which started with pulling down two back-to-back skins. Going after his third skin, Josh unleashed a combination of carves and crushing top turns, netting a 7.83 which he followed up with a straight seven to secure his fourth skin.

The competition was held during a long period south swell and short interval west wind swell, and saw some great surfing all day. Andrew Jacobson, the 2009 defending King of the Groms champion took home one skin in round one, but failed to advance in his next heat. Oahu’s Seth Moniz (Josh’s brother) and Huntington Beach local and Quiksilver rider Kanoa Igarashi looked like frontrunners, both nailing two skins each. Another Huntington Beach local boy, Jack Boyes, pulled down one skin before the round was reversed, and he matched the two-skin total of Moniz and Igarashi, but could not win another.

Other notable standouts included three Kauai’ian surfers. Jesse Guglielmana lofted a solid frontside air reverse on the outside for a perfect 10 point ride, pulling down a new snowboard for winning the “Lib Tech Maneuver’ portion of the event in addition to a $250 cash prize for capturing the “DC Shoes Highest Score” award. The next best scores in the event went to Koa Smith, who scored a 7.83 on his forehand for showing speed where there was none – throwing buckets and throwing tail in the shore break – and Kaoli Kahokuloa, who nailed a solid 7.5 for some big forehand turns on the outside and a nice air revo in the shore break.

Patience and faith in his home break of Haleiwa delivered local boy Joel Centeio the biggest victory of his career today, winning the Reef Hawaiian Pro in 6- to 8-foot surf with a late barrel ride and only the mandatory two waves to his credit. Joel, 26, came from the very first round, winning all seven heats he contested. He now takes an early lead on the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing presented by Rockstar Energy Drink series ratings. His win today earned him $20,000. If he can stay the course and win the Vans Triple Crown series title, it will pay another $50,000 as well as a $10,000 custom Nixon watch.

This past weekend the inaugural Red Bull Rivals took to the sand of, well, Sandy Beach, and all told, the event was an amazing success. Withover 3,000 people on hand to see the best surfers from the South Shore go head-to-head against the best surfers from the North Shore, it was the can’t-miss event of Labor Day weekend in Hawaii. And believe me folks. It didn’t disappoint.

With the likes of Jamie O’Brien fronting the North Shore team, and young phenom Carissa Moore saddled up with the South Shore team, as well as ringers like Derek Ho and Kolea Fukumitsu adding a little extra power to the North and South, respectively, the talent level was amazing. Besides Carissa’s amazing contribution, both Keanu Asing and Kekoa Cazimero blew doors all event long, and the definitely showed why they’re a couple of the brightest up-and-comers from Town.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 28 August, 2009 : – - Honolulu — Waikiki took care of her own today, serving up a pair of wins for local surfers Kelia Moniz, 16, and Kai Sallas, 28, in the Gidget Pro and Rabbit Kekai Toes on the Nose pro longboard events, respectively. Home grown knowledge played an integral part as hip-high waves and a lazy full tide brought it all down to wave selection and footwork finesse. Moniz won $2,000, and Sallas took home $2,500.

Hawaii surfers faired well overall, filling three of four places in both finals. But in both events the runner-up position went to Southern Californians; in the Gidget Pro it was 32-year-old Cori Schumacher, and in the Toes on the Nose, Steven Newton, 24.

The final of the women’s Gidget Pro hit the water first and the women benefited from the last pulse of waves before the high tide slowed the break of Queen’s right down. The ladies enjoyed a consistent exchange of scores. Moniz chose to position herself on the inside of the break, picking up several long rides that allowed her to display graceful footwork and gravity-defying noserides. In contrast, Schumacher blazed her way through from the outside, opting for a more progressive, power repertoire.

The final scoreline was close, Moniz winning with a two wave total of 14.1 points out of 20; Schumacher was second on 13.4 points; Ashely Quintal was third with 12.3; and Haunani Kane was fourth with 10.7 points.

“Finally, a win,” said Moniz, who has been trying to take the honors here for four years. “I’ve gotten second quite a lot really, so I’m very excited. I stayed on the inside and that worked to my advantage. I was told by my dad to stay on the inside and ride under the peak and it worked out.” It’s definitely worth listening to your dad if it’s someone like Tony Moniz, a former pro surfer himself who could surf Waikiki blindfolded.

This ones a killer, organic start to finish, and we are only going to make 50 of them.

Danilo Nacarato is from Oporto, Portugal. He is 15 years old and he has 4 years of kiteboarding. This year Danilo became an Aboards Kiteboarding team rider. He has great goals for his career and 2008 – be the Portuguese champion, participate on KPWT world tour.

What was the reason for you to start kitesurfing?

I started kitesurfing because I love adrenaline.

One day, when I was 11 years old, I was arriving at home with my father and he saw a couple of guys doing tricks in the water with foil kites and he said:

_ Hey, Dani, do you wanna learn it?

_ Wow, for sure, this must be really great!

So, we had a conversation with the instructor and in the following day I was already learning how to kite.

In the second day I learned the water starts and was enjoying that feeling that just the people who kite knows!

Are you learning fast? Did all tricks come easy for you or did you need to work hard on each of them?

Yes, I think I can say I’m a fast learner, but that’s just a part of the work because you have to practice the tricks everyday to do it the most powerful and stylish you can, it takes a lot of time to learn.

What was your most fascinating moment in kiteboarding?

My most fascinating moment was when I started doing slimchances, that was my first handlepass trick which I will never forget the feeling.

What is your favorite trick?

Slimchance, Kgb and Blind Judge.

When I’m overpowered I like to do Big megaloops!

On wich trick are you working now?

I’m working on KGB to blind, Slimchance to blind and switch tricks.

Are you planning to participate on KPWT this year? How do you assess your chances?

Yes, I will try to participate in some of the seasons of KPWT like Turkey, Italy and some others.

Which is your favorite spot?

Esposende and Cauípe (Portugal)

Who is your favorite rider? Why?

My favorite riders are Aaron Hadlow and Ruben Len10, I can´t explain why, they are my inspiration, they are just the best, someday I will be like them, I hope so.

Who is your favorite girl rider? Why?

Bruna is the best. xD

She has a lot of power and style.

Maybe someday Gisela will be like her.

What are your plans for future? After 5-10 years?

Be that kind of TOP rider that everybody knows I am!

What are you doing when there is no wind?

Graffiting, being with some friends, drawing etc.

Describe in few words what is your ideal day?

Sunny day, blue sky, 25 degrees, hot water and 20 knots.

What is your dream for life?

Living in a house in a paradisiacal place with my family, where, at the beach, the wind blows every single day.

Have my money, have my sponsors, have fun and go to the championships.
