I was 12 when I fell in love — true, real love — for the first time. It will soon be 21 years since that day. He’s grown older. He’s gotten fat. He’s lost that beautiful, youthful glow he once had. But my love remains true. Probably because he was my first, but I just cannot let go.

I was in sixth grade and my best friend, Carrie, and I walked into the Arnot Mall movie theater in Big Flats to see Willow for the first time. Who knew it would change my life? I certainly didn’t.

We both adored the movie, but even more than that, we both met Val Kilmer for the very first time. (I pause to take a big, nostalgic and dreamy sigh.) I saw the movie in the theater several more times and bought all the magazines and posters and you-name-its that came along with the marketing.

I learned through the articles in the Willow magazines (which I read over and over and over) that Mr. Kilmer (VAL!!!) starred in three movies prior to Willow: Top Secret!, Real Genius and Top Gun. I’d never seen any of them and never heard of the first two. Of course, I had to drag my parents to the video store right away and rent them all.

Oh boy was I glad I did! Especially Top Secret! and Real Genius. I won’t go into the plots or any other details, but anyone who hasn’t seen these movies must — MUST — go now and get them and watch them. And watch them again. And then again. And even after you’ve watched them 50 times, you will still find new things to laugh at and notice, whether it be a subtle joke you didn’t quite catch the first 49 times or something happening in the background of a scene that didn’t stand out before.

I immediately introduced every one of my friends to these movies. I showed them to family when they visited. I have since brought Emma into the fold and she loves them as much as I ever did.

Oh, My Val, what happened to thou?

Suffice it to say, seeing Val in those movies did nothing to assuage my love and general worship of the man. Even when he got married, it was fine. I mean, he married his Willow co-star and I loved her, too. Just not in quite the same way.

Since those days, My Val has gone on to make many more movies, get divorced and start an obscure music career. He isn’t quite as good-looking as he once was. OK, he’s really not even slightly as good-looking as he once was. But the love remains.

Two years ago, I bought Willow for Emma for Christmas. She’d never even heard of it, but based on the movies and books she likes, I knew she’d love it. We watched it the day she opened it. I hadn’t watched it in many years at that point. And, like the man, the movie still holds its special place in my heart. It was incredible. It made me very happy. I need to watch it again soon.

Following all that negativity, though, there is one good thing I have to say about the viral campaign for this – the (oh god I’m about to hate myself) Twitter account is pretty neat. The notion of having a part of a viral campaign just reporting on related real-life news ups the menace a little (a little) and weaves the fiction in a little neater than the Dakon/Pendrill site or the Ogden Marsh homepage do. I’m a bit surprised this intermingling has only cropped up in ARGs in the past year or so, though. I suppose the 8 years since The Beast/Majestic debuted isn’t that long, but still.

Welcome to your life
There’s no turning back
Even while WE sleep
We will find you
Acting on your best behaviour
Turn your back on mother nature
Everybody wants to rule the world

It’s my own design
It’s my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help ME make the most
Of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

There’s a room where the light won’t find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down
When they do I’ll be right behind you

So glad we’ve almost made it
So sad they had TO fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world

I can’t stand this indecision
Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the world
Say that you’ll never never never NEVER need it
One headline why believe it ?
Everybody wants to rule the world

All for freedom and for pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever
Everybody wants to rule the world

This has got to be one of my all time favorite songs from the 80’s (i think) and also because it was the lead in for the Dennis Miller show, great comedian and author by the way. Anywho…everyone, hopefully, knows this group and realizes how cool this song is…

For me one of my favorite parts is the somewhat poignant pull back to the old standby that nothing does last forever, but i think potential interpretation can vary…i guess in all finality, in every sense, life, is what we make of the chances we are given and those chances are fueled or killed by our choices…

Well woo hoo, so two roads diverge in a yellow wood, which path do we all travel and, do we travel it alone? I think, no, we travel it, hopefully not alone, maybe sometimes, but most make the choice not to…and if we are all lucky, deserved or not, we grab that hand, hold on, and hope we walk a lifetime that way…

The other night, after I picked up my husband so we could carpool home together, I was excited to find the new Anberlin cover of the New Order song “True Faith” playing on the radio. It’s one of the better covers I’ve heard in a while, and I had been wanting my dear hubbie to hear it as well. He agreed that it was a pretty decent cover, which then prompted us into a discussion of what makes a good cover song.

The cover, or a new rendition of a song by a different artist, is pretty popular in modern music. However, while it can be nice to hear artists sing other artists’ songs, I can’t say that I’m all that impressed with most covers. A truly good cover transforms the previous song into a new one — and a good one, too! You can certainly have a cover that sounds totally different but totally terrible, i.e., No Doubt’s version of “It’s My Life” or Jessica Simpson’s version of “Take My Breath Away” or Madonna’s “American Pie.” Sometimes, the change can be achieved by just altering the tempo of a piece or having an amazing voice with a passion not heard before in that song. I’m not saying that all covers need to transcend their originals such that the original fades out of memory and the cover becomes the de facto version of a song (best example: Diana Ross singing “You Can’t Hurry Love”). But a really good cover needs to be a legitimate, positive evolution of that song.

So, I got to thinking — what were the best covers of my time? I’m not even 30 yet, so I realize I’m using a small set of time, but it was fun nonetheless to sit down and really muse over it. Here’s what I got:

Johnny Cash covering Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt.” I am a big fan of the original song; I loved it when it first came out on the radio (I was in middle school!). But when I heard Johnny Cash sing his version of “Hurt” over the radio one day while I was stuck in L.A. traffic, my breath was almost taken away. That iconic voice, combined with that iconic guitar, put chills into a song that was already pretty biting. Johnny Cash literally gave me goosebumps while maintaining the purity and intent of the original. This cover also shows the mind of a great musician. One of my pet peeves are people who will close themselves off to a certain type of music. If Johnny Cash had done that, I never would have heard this song.

Michael Andrews & Gary Jules covering Tears for Fears’ “Mad World.” Talk about a cover eclipsing the original. I always found it amazing that “Mad World” was Tears for Fears’ first big international success. Michael Andrews changed the tempo and turned the song into a ballad, creating a creepy journey into everyone’s darker perspectives. This cover came to fame in the movie “Donnie Darko” and has since been featured in a couple video games as well.

Natalie Merchant (when she was lead singer of 10,000 Maniacs) covering Patti Smith’s “Because the Night.” This cover shows how just having a voice better suited for the song transforms it. Patti Smith’s version was okay, and man, she contributed a lot to music as well. But she didn’t do this song justice. 10,000 Maniacs took a shot at the song — and didn’t actually change much of it musically — but that piano, violin, and Natalie Merchant took it to a more personal place that resonated with many of its listeners. This song dominated the airwaves when the MTV unplugged version came out. It’s funny to me that it was Bruce Springstien who actually wrote the song, then Patti Smith debuted it, and now Natalie Merchant “owns” it.

They Might Be Giants covering The Four Lad’s “Istanbul.” I earn my geek cred here. My husband almost blurt out laughing when I mentioned this one, I think because he keeps on forgetting the song is wayyyy older than TMBG. Strange enough, I first heard this song when I was bored at home one day when I was little and was watching a Lawrence Welk marathon on PBS (there really was nothing else to watch…really). TMBG literally took a little ditty, geeked it up, and put some rocking electricity into the song along with a little klezmer action, and now it’s a cult classic. I believe it’s played at every concert they perform as well. (And yes, I realize that I linked the Tiny Toon’s video of it…I like it!)

The Bangles covering Paul Simon’s “Hazy Shade of Winter.” This cover proves that true musicians can take a song, mix it in a blender, and make something new. How many people my age even know the Paul Simon version? (I do, because I used to listen to Paul Simon and even Simon & Garfunkel when I was a child, since my father listened to the VINYL.) What’s the crucial change? Some may say it’s the tempo, others the electric guitar, or perhaps the addition of a real drum beat. My husband seems to think that the female vocals in lieu of Paul Simon’s voice was the crucial effect. I actually can’t put my finger on it… but there certainly were a number of changes, and a lot of credit should go to the person/people who led them to that final product so well. This version took a lot of work to make, and I love it (and I wish stupid college acapella bands would stop trying to cover it themselves because they can’t cover the Bangles’ version well at all — just do the Simon version!).

So, those my favorite of the last three decades. Am I missing any?

Well I have never read the lyrics to this piece before in my life, and in fact my tradition has been kinda making it up as I go along as most of us do wwith a song we aren’t sure about the words right? Come on you all know the the song Louie Louie, no one really knows what the hell they are saying and that makes it really fun?! I think so…

Anyway, I really like this band and enjoy their tunes, and yes it is a cheesy 80’s thing, but it still brings back some halfway decent memories into my little world and some feel good kinda stuff…how cool that a Euro Rock group like this can still inspire and be played on the radio…

It is too bad in some ways we have moved away from what I would classify as traditionally quality music, though i know many would argue that 80’s wasn’t always quality, and I do agree. But there are some truly creative pieces that came from that era, some that I like just because I do and I won’t back down…

I’ve got maybe two more regular shows left, including this one, and my Christmas show. Spend my last couple of Wednesday nights on KRUI 89.7 fm with me from 8 to 10 pm, you can also listen in online here.

1. Blondie, Blondie (1976), X Offender

I pulled this sweet image of Debbie Harry off of the Blog entitled “x” Another cool bit of info is that this photo was taken by Bob Gruen who’s exhibit at the MoMA I just got to experience. “x” does a really nice job describing the image, so I won’t go there, if you want to read about it check it out.

The Shuffle Report: 10 songs I listened to, in order, on my iPod in shuffle mode at a given point in time. No editing, no skipping. It is what it is.

Seriously, does anyone like Mondays? Today was one of those days where I should have just stayed in bed. Stayed late at work, too. The usually mundane subway ride couldn’t come soon enough. Always thankful to have the tunes along with me.

1.	Rita–Los Lobos (The Ride) [Great track. Great album.]
2.	I’m The Face–The High Numbers (Quadrophenia soundtrack) [Fun track by a quartet soon to change their name to The Who.]
3.	King of Hollywood–The Eagles (The Long Run) [One of the better tracks on this album, IMHO.]
4.	Tomorrow Never Knows–Bruce Springsteen (Working On A Dream) [Can't believe the tour is over. Bring on the DVD.]
5.	Sowing The Seeds of Love–Tears For Fears (The Best Of) [The only album any casual fan needs.]
6.	Imagination (Is a Powerful Deceiver)–Elvis Costello (My Aim Is True–Bonus Disc) [What a classic.]
7.	John Brown’s Body–Oscar Peterson w/Milt Jackson (Very Tall) [An excellent pairing of two jazz giants.]
8.	905—The Who (Who Are You) [Decent John Entwistle-penned tuned from the last record with Keith Moon.]
9**
10**

**I know these lists are usually 10 songs long, but only had time for 8 on the way home.

And I find it kind of funny/I find it kind of sad/The dreams in which I’m dying/Are the best I’ve ever had/I find it hard to tell you/I find it hard to take/When people run in circles/It’s a very very/Mad world/Mad world.

Shout, shout, let it all out. Tears for Fears says so, and so do we! The best way to get your program growing is to start advertising, and there’s lots of free and easy ways to do this:

Announce your collection at assemblies, pep rallies, and other school-wide functions.

Make sure to mention what items you’re collecting and where people can drop them off!

Be consistent about announcing your collection over the PA system at school,
on student announcements, etc.

Letting the students do the announcing is even better!

At sporting events for your school, and even in the community, make sure your collection is among the announcements to be made.

You could even set up a collection table at those basketball and football games!

Feeling real advertise-y? Click here for all the info you need to set up a table at an event. Click here to get all the materials you need. Anytime you have contact with students, parents, or the community is an opportunity to spread the word about your program. Take advantage of the myriad of ways to share your collection. Then tell us all about it. We want to hear which method works best for you!

E palpita forte.

Tracklist: Vortexes – And All I Need – Anche Se Non Trovi Le Parole – This Knot – Mad World – Ti Vorrei Sollevare (con Giuliano Sangiorgi) – Your Manifesto – The Big Dipper – Someone To Love – Poems By God – Coincidences – Lisert – Forgiveness (feat. Antony) – Dot In The Universe

Ack! I’ve got Writers Block, what should I do?

Calling all you NaNoWriMo Writers.

Don’t sweat it!

Just take a few minutes, go for a walk, pop in a CD and dance around your office.

Read the newspaper, or watch TV for about 30 minutes.

Start writing anything about what you’ve just watched or listened to.

This will get your writing juices going.

It should help with what your working on.

Or it will give you a brand new idea of what to write about next.

Ideas are wonderful and music is inspiring.

I find typing to 80’s music is the best thing in the world.

Try and keep up with the tempo, it’s fun!
