Dragonfly - 1215 Conn. Ave

It was December 2006, and I was playing every Friday night at this cool bar/lounge called “Dragonfly.” Situated in the heart of DC, “Dragonfly” to me was a great venue that served tasty food and was not as commercial as other venues nearby.

Many people would use “Dragonfly” as a meeting spot, or as a place to pre-party, before continuing on with the night. I was a resident there for about 8 months and I enjoyed it because I was able to invite many of my good friends to join me and throw a party.

There were many memorable moments at Dfly, as they would call it. I was the first person in DC to bring an artist off the fresh dirtybird label, in San Francisco. Worthy from dirtybird was nice enough to come and play at my party, which happened to fall close to my wife’s bday. The party was insane, and I continued teaming up with other local djs for future parties.

I used to enjoy electro house music, but was into the more dirtier side of electro that diverted from cheesy vocals and synthy buildups. After a good year, my view on music had changed yet again. I started focusing my attention to the more natural groove of tech house. I continued to play a good mixture of electro and tech house.

James Amato’s business-savvy approach to the music industry has kept him balancing roles of promoter, record label owner, DJ and producer for more than a decade. From hosting his first one-off event in 1999 to securing his position as Director of Music and Bookings at Chicago’s historically influential SmartBar since 2006, James has become one of the most widely recognized names on the national & electronic music scene. Most recently, James has established his industry presence further, launching his widely successful fidget/electo/tech house label, Potty Mouth Music, which has earned him notoriety worldwide.

Hace tiempo que es uno de los artistas fijos en la nómina de Trapez y ahora regresa con la segunda entrega de su serie “Muscle tracks“, que incluye tres cortes en su versión vinilo y uno más en la digital.
A destacar “Charger“, tema contundente para la pista con varios momentos álgidos para deleitar al personal alzando bien alto las manos y “Mustang“, excelente corte tech-house que me recuerda y mucho al “Groove la chord” del gran Aril Brikha.

Como qualquer jornalista, até tentei não postar, de imediato, outro set de tech-house, em tão curto tempo, mas quando se trata do português João Loop e seu set é sempre uma grande novidade, repensei minha decisão. E não me arrependo. O simpático português, que há anos tempera sua musicalidade com dendê, preparou um set pra lá de muito bom, em sua terra natal, enquanto não volta a alegrar os houseiros (baianos!) de plantão.

Mesmo sem tê-lo no verão tocando horas a fio, sem intervalos, como era de costume, podemos nos contentar com um set de melodias inteligentes, vocais bem aplicados e sem fechação, que nos remetem de imediato a cena clubber/indoor.

Não posso deixar de citar, porque seria um atentado a difusão da boa informação, que o set de outubro, também elogiado pelo blogueiro que vos escreve, deve ser baixado sem receio e ouvido em alto e bom som.

Every year it’s part of my job at PlayNetwork to come up with a list of top albums and overall assessment of music trends for the year. Below is my brief review of what I felt was a pretty landmark year for electronic music in the US and in general. Barring any incredible releases over the next month, these are my picks for the year. Keep in mind this list is strictly made up of albums; not EPs, 12’s or remixes (i.e 95% of the electronic music I purchased this year).

2009 in Review : Binary Pop, Warp’s Legacy, Dub Mutations and the Return of Sexy Dance Music

2009 has been an incredibly innovative year in relation to music production. Artists like Animal Collective, Fever Ray, Royksopp and Moderat have proven once and for all that digital beats and electronic sound design can appeal to a pop audience that otherwise wouldn’t find themselves listening to “electronic music”.

This year also marks the 20 year anniversary of the greatest electronic music label (arguably greatest label) of all time, Warp Records, which has had an exceptional year across the board with strong indie releases from Grizzly Bear and Maximo Park as well as strong releases from their more obscure electronic artists like Tim Exile and Clark. Warp’s 20th anniversary box set is not only one of the best reviewed collections of they year, it’s also a brilliant testament to the label’s vast catalog of ground breaking artists (i.e. Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Jamie Lidell, Nightmares on Wax, Prefuse 73, Autechre, Broadcast, Plaid, Battles, Squarepusher, etc).

In addition, 2009 witnessed the rise of Dubstep as a respected genre in the US through acclaimed UK labels like Hyperdub (Burial, Kode9, Joker, Zomby, Flying Lotus) and Tectonic (2562, Martyn, DJ Pinch, Benga) both of whom continue to blur the boundaries between Grime, Dub, West Coast Hip Hop and Detroit Techno. With the avid support of tastemakers like BBC Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs and Low End Theory’s Daddy Kev (Alpha Pup Records) UK Dubstep and West Coast Glitch Hop / Hip Hop have both become quintessential styles on the electronic music frontline in the US. From Burning Man to this year’s Movement festival in Detroit, Dubstep and Glitch Hop have fully emerged in 2009 as a staple sound in North America.

Another emerging trend has been the Deep House and Tech House revival, which has been experiencing a resurgence the past few years as club-goers have tired of the heady, sterility of Minimal Techno and the frenetic, over the top sound of Electro House. Artists like Gui Boratto, Voodeux, Pezzner, Milton Jackson, Stimming, Mode D, Catz n Dogz, DJ T and Dixon have all helped in keeping underground dance music both sexy and musical.

Overall 2009 has been a phenomenal year for technologically driven music, proving that creativity is truly catching up with the tools used for musical expression in the digital age.
