Etwas über ein Jahr ist es her, seit ich mit einem Eintrag über die Microsoft TechDays 2008 diesen Blog eröffnen durfte. Letzte Woche war ich nun an den TechDays 2009, dieses Mal im Kursaal in Bern.

Es war eine gut besuchte, professionell durchgeführte und solide Veranstaltung. Wie schon letztes Jahr waren es für mich gut investierte 2 Tage, um zu erspüren, wo die Reise hingeht mit Microsoft und den Technologien dieser Firma.

Die für die Megos vielleicht wichtigste Information, die ich mitgenommen habe: WPF ist jetzt einsatzfähig. Dies wurde klar anhand der Preisverleihung für den .NET Swiss Innovation Award, wo eine WPF- und 2 Silverlight-Applikationen prämiert worden sind – alle 3 nicht-triviale, real existierende Applikationen, offenbar reif für den produktiven Einsatz. (Ein paar Details zum Award und den Gewinnern findet man in einem Infoweek-Artikle hier.) Auch der Stand von WPF plus entsprechender Tools ist mittlerweile um Längen besser als noch vor zwei Jahren oder so, wo Microsoft vorschlug, WPF-Applikationen ohne ein DataGrid-Control und ohne IntelliSense für XAML zu entwickeln…

Eine weitere interessante, in einem gut gemachten Vortrag präsentierte Sache sind die Parallel Extensions, mit deren Hilfe man für seine Programme unter .NET 4.0 auf relativ einfache Weise mehrere Cores bzw. Prozessoren wird nutzen können. Zunächst schien mir die Sache etwas überspitzt formuliert ein wenig paradox: Da baut man in der Form des .NET-Frameworks zuerst erst ein System, das mit seinem Pseudocode-basierten Ansatz, Garbage Collecting, aufwendigen Laufzeit-Informationen für Reflection usw. ziemlich gut geeignet ist, um Prozessorleistung abzufackeln, und dann geht man hin und baut eine Erweiterung, um das sogar noch mit mehr als einem Core gleichzeitig zu tun.

Aber es macht schon einen gewissen Sinn: Dank JIT-Compilierung und mächtigen Prozessoren spielt der .NET-Overhead mit der Zeit eine immer kleinere Rolle, aber wie man die laufend grösser werdende Zahl an Cores einfach und sinnvoll nutzen kann, wird wohl eine der grossen Fragen der Zukunft sein, und zwar eine, die sich als ziemlich harte Nuss erweisen dürfte.

Zudem sieht man, dass es auch klare Vorteile hat, sich mit dem .NET Framework auf einer relativ hohen Abstraktions-Ebene bewegen zu können: Microsoft hat es in der Hand, seine .NET-Sprachen geeignet um neue Sprachkonstrukte für paralleles Programmieren zu erweitern, und das .NET Framework ist ein geeignetes System, um möglichst viele der “schmutzigen” Details vom Entwickler fernzuhalten und gewissermassen “hinter den Kulissen zu verstecken”.

Wie letztes Jahr besuchte ich mit grossem Genuss zwei Vorträge von Sascha P. Corti. Microsoft Schweiz soll gut Acht geben auf diesen Mann, den sollten sie unbedingt behalten.

Der für mich ganz persönlich absurdeste Moment dieser TechDays war, als stolz die Out of Browser genannte neue Fähigkeit der kommenden Version 3 von Silverlight präsentiert wurde: Damit ist es möglich, entsprechend vorbereitete Silverlight-3-Applikationen lokal zu installieren und dann komplett ausserhalb des Browsers laufen zu lassen. (Technische Details findet man z.B. hier).

Ohne Zweifel technisch gesehen eine beeindruckende Leistung, an der die Jungs und Mädels in Redmond wohl hart gearbeitet haben, um sie zu vollbringen. Aber warum fand ich das in gewisser Weise absurd? Lassen Sie es mich mit den Worten eines hypothetischen, fanatischen Web-2.0-Fans einmal so formulieren: “Wow! Ich dachte immer, man braucht einen Browser, um Applikationen laufen zu lassen. Jetzt geht das ja sogar ohne Browser!”. Ja, ja, wer hätte das gedacht, Applikationen, die lokal auf einem PC laufen.

Juste un petit billet rapide, pour vous dire que si comme moi vous avez loupé les TechDays (ou une grande partie…).

В третий раз я побывал на конференции SUN Tech Days.

Проходила она там же, где и в позапрошлом году – в ЛенЭкспо, гавань. Место ИМХО вполне подходящее – всяко лучше прошлогоднего ДС “Олимпийский”. Располагалась она в том же павильоне, разве что в этот раз появилась “Гостиная OpenSolaris” и стенды располагались на первом этаже, а не втором.

Поспав всего 4 часа, я встал в среду утром (а не как обычно – днём), попил кофе, запихал ноут в сумку да поехал к гавани… Туда по-идее ходил автобус, но я не знаю докуда именно он идёт – вроде как даже дальше гавани, потому как я вылез напротив ЛенЭкспо и это была не конечная.

Кажется, в тот раз было несколько больше вспомогательного персонала – достаточно часто можно было увидеть девушек с табличками “информация”, на открытии играл оркестр, по территории разгуливал Дюк и всячески привлекал народ. Кстати Дюк был бесподобен!

На открытии я не был, но наблюдал часть трансляции в “Гостинной OpenSolaris”. В основном, там было про всё ту же направленность SUN на развитие в стиле Open Sorce и расширение применения различных вариация Java. Так же были попытки обратить внимание разработчиков на технологию JavaFX.

Попутно я прошёлся глянуть стенды…

AMD раздавала некий диск “AMD Developer Tools”, права ни упаковка ни сами представители компании не смогли толком объяснить нафига оно надо и ограничились лишь общими словами что там поездатые либы (под какую ОСь, для какого языка???) и инструменты (опять же не ясно для чего). Информация, нанесённая на сам диск оказалась более ясной, но содержимое ограничилось лишь PDF’ками со стандартом на AMD64 и какими-то видеороликами (не смотрел пока). Вместо либ/тулз были лишь ссылки сходить в интернеты и скачать самим

Intel наоборот софтом не раскидывался, зато демонстрировал свой инструментарий в деле и представители компании были больше подкованы в вопросе “а нафига оно вообще надо?”.

На InstallFest все желающие могли опробовать OpenSolaris 2008.11 на своих ноутбуках (на моём било на пошёл, хотя прошлые шли, либо я опять забыл как грузить мак с диска). С дисками правда не совсем понятно – я тут же сделал образ одного из них, так не совпал размер и MD5, попробовал в виртуалке, а там просто другой билд. Похоже, я уволок с конфы штуки три разных ОпенСолярки.

Не по-далёку располагался стенд BlackBox, где была представлена модель этой интересной штуковины. Правда мне казалось, что он поставлялся с уже заполненными стойками, но видимо теперь создали модификацию подешевле с пустыми.

Вроде как впервые, появился свой стенд и у VirtualBox. Кстати в тот же день вышла новая версия программы… На стенде крутили несколько ОСей, в виртуальных вендах даже гоняли третью кваку. Кажется был и хакинтош, потому как виртуальная коробка оригинальную макось не держит.

На доклады я не пошл, вместо этого поехал на работу. Вечером правда ездил на последний доклад в потоке OpenSolaris, посвещённый портированию софта на эту платформу. Доклад показался весьма интересным и насыщенным – не смотря на очень ограниченное время, были показаны основные моменты управления софтом в OpenSolaris и как их использовать для создания нового для системы приложения/либы.

После докладов была намечена “пивная вечеринка” и “концерт”, я правда был только на начале тех действ и решил лучше дома отдохнуть да отоспаццо.

Утром четверга я проснулся сам часов в восемь, потому как спал с прошлого вечера, а не текущего утра, как обычно. Погода была всё также хороша и я решил не катаццо на автобусе, а проехать Питерскими подземельями и прогуляццо от мето до гавани пешёчком. По-пути вызвонил gg75 – он тож приехал, так что топали мы уже вместе.

Зашли на пару лекций Enterprise потока, ИМХО особо не о чём. На первое представители ДойчБанка рассказывали наскокаж им прикольно работать с Java, типа прикольношопиздец. Вторая была от hh.ru про то, что прошлой осенью дропнули кучу народа и постепенно дропают до сих пор, количество вакансий уменьшается, а число соискателей наоборот ростёт. По-мне так достаточно очевидные вещи, если смотреть по сторонам…

Уходя, встретил Catar‘а и немного пообщались с ним. Интересный человек, жаль редко вижу последние годы… Вообще на конфе видел народ с spb.lug

Потом я поехал на работу. Думал мож сходить под вечер послушать про виртуализацию и заглянуть на OSUG, но как-то уселся за код и отпустило меня слишком поздно. На третий день вообще не ездил…

Session 1: PowerShell v2 (Bart De Smet)

Bart kicked of the last day of this event with a session on PSv2. After outlining the PS mission (as integrated with the OS as bash, as programmatic as Perl/python, as …) he explained the deliverables for PSv2:

• Make it easier to use and learn
• Layer apps on top of PS
• Managed everything, everywhere

The demo’s of Graphical PowerShell, Debugger, new Cmdlets, modules, Native Code and remoting were enough to make me start thinking about installing Win7 on my personal laptop

Session 2: Sysvol replication – FRS vs. DFS-R (Rhonda Layfield)

Rhonda discussed the strengths and weakness of both FRS (File Replication Service) and DFS-R (Distributed File System – Replication), the benefits of using the latter for sysvol replication and the procedure to migrate from one to the other.

Session 3: Object Recovery in AD (Jorge de Almeida Pinto)

Prior to this session there was a general power cut. The speaker announced a delay of half an hour. But when we returned the presentation had already started. We missed the first couple of slides. Jorge basically covered the solutions for restoring accidentally deleted items from Windows 2000 up to Windows Server 2008 R2, including the new AD Recycle Bin feature.

Session 4: Exchange Server 2007 High Availability (Ilse van Criekinge)

Yet another presentation by Ilse. This time covering Continuous Replication. After uncovering the 4 High Availability methods in Exchange Server 2007 (LCR, SCC, CCR & SCR) she went into a more detailed comparison of SCC (Single Copy Cluster) and CCR (Cluster Continuous Replication).

Last but not least we got into a bit more details about lost log resilience, log roll, reseeding and the transport dumpster.

Session 5: Patching Sharepoint (Sam Hassani)

This session was way to specific for me as I don’t have any particular knowledge about the Product.

Session 6: Network Monitor (Rhonda Layfield)

Rhonda entertained us with with a session about net latest versions of Network Monitor 3.2 & 3.3 beta.

Session 1: Architectural Principles for Software+Services (Miha Kralj)

The opening keynote was entirely devoted to Software+Services and the differences between on-premises, hosted and cloud computing.

Session 2: Exchange Server 2007 SP1 Virtualisation (Ilse van Criekinge & Arlindo Alves)

Arlindo kicked off the presentation with an overview of the Hyper-V architecture. Afterwards Ilse discussed Microsoft policy for virtualising Exchange Server (basically E2K7SP1 on W2K8 only).

Afterwards we we’re give a number of practical considerations:

• Performance: use passthrough disks, used fixed disks, monitor guest performance (not only the host), do not use differencing disks.
• Design: make your design as if it were a physical setup. Exchange is not “Hyper-V aware”
• Setup: setup is identical to a physical install
• Root config: separate LUNs, no snapshotting, no oversubscribing CPUs above 2:1 (virtual:physical), only install management tools in the parent partition and nothing else
• Guest config: don’t forget about the disk space needed for dumping the guests memory to disk
• Exchange Storage Config
• Backup: from within the guest
• HA & DR: either cluster the guest or the host, but not both!

After a demo of Live Migrating an exchange server (why not play a multimedia file from within a mailbox for this demonstration rather than using xcopy?) we were presented with a number of scenarios were MS believes virtualising exchange might come in handy.

Session 3: Windows 7 Overview (Tony Krijnen & Daniel Van Soest)

I guess it’s not the first time Tony and Daniel present something together. Their brought us a very dynamic session which consisted almost entirely of demos showcasing the new features in Windows 7:

• UI improvements (shake it baby!)
• BrancheCache
• DirectAccess
• Security Improvements: User Account Control, IE8 Inprivate Browsing, Applocker, Bitlocker To Go, Network Access Protection
• Recovery Environment

Session 4: Take your Exchange Database anywhere (Ilse van Criekinge)

Yet another Exchange related session I was looking forward to. This time Ilse covered the Exchange 2007 Database Portability feature. She started off by refreshing the Exchange Database technology and continued with a bit of a comparison between the various continuous replication solutions available with E2K7SP1.

Using a real life scenario of dismounted store Isle ran us through the different options (Dialtone recovery) and tools (eseutil, isinteg) available. The demo ended with recovering the database file in a new exchange org.

Session 5: What’s new in R2 for network engineers (Corey Hynes)

Over to Corey again who showcased us the new features  in Windows Server 2008 R2:

• Hyper-V Live Migration
• Management & Operations: PowerShell V2, Server Manager improvements and Best Practice Analyzers
• Active Directory: ADAC (Active Directory Administration Center), Recycle Bin, Offline Domain Join
• Server Core: DISM, ocsetup, .net & asp.net

Session 6: Virtualisation Security (Kai Axford)

Kai Axford got us thinking out loud about how to secure a virtual infrastructure.

The first day of the TechDays Conference was filled with session on Windows Server 2008 R2, at least for the people following the IT Pro track. Here’s a little transcript of the day:

Session 1: Streamlined Management (Daniel Van Soest)

Daniel’s session covered the improvements brought to us by W2K8R2. He started of with the Unified Management Framework featuring an extended Resource Monitor and Best Practice analyzers for AD, DNS, IIS and so on. Next subject was Server Core which will contain a basic .net framework allowing us to install PowerShell on Server Core. We continued with some  Remote Shell demo’s in the Windows Remote Management section. After tackling some problems with his microphone the coolness factor went crescendo with PowerShell V2:

• Graphical PowerShell via the PowerShell ISE (= Integrated Scripting Environment)
• New AD Cmdlets (See the Pipelining AD blog)
• PowerShell Remoting (The N° 1 disappointment when a initially learned about PS as I was heavily using PSTools at that time for managing servers remotely)

Last but not least we covered the AD Recycle Bin feature as the most important  AD in 2K8R2 improvement.

Session 2: Clustered Shared Volumes (Arlindo Alves)

After a quick break Arlindo discussed this new Windows fail-over clustering feature which allows for concurrent access to cluster disks. Arlindo covered these topics (unfortunately the Internet connection proved a bit flaky during the demos):

• cluster validation tool
• migrate/upgrade scenario’s
• PowerShell support (might replace cluster.exe in the future)
• New High Availability Roles: DFS-Replication & Remote Desktop Services
• CSV are specifically targeted at Hyper-V (all other roles are not supported)
• Network Prioritization is back
• Quick migration vs. Live Migration
• CSV vs. Backup

Session 3: Virtualisation in Server 2008 R2 (Corey Hynes)

Right after lunch Corey Hynes discussed the entire range of virtualisation solutions available in R2; Hyper-V, VDI, Presentation virtualisation etc AND showed us a couple of Windows 7 bluescreens.

Session 4: BrancheCache (Vikram Ghosh)

I had a hard time staying “concentrated” during this session. The least interesting one of the day from my point of view.

Session 5: DirectAccess (Kai Axford)

Kai definitely didn’t have any problems with the audio equipment, as a matter of fact I believe he could do very well without any amplifier at all He came all the way from Texas to present the DirectAccess feature which aims to replace the VPN technology.

Unfortunately the calendar for TechDays BeLux is “hidden” in some SilverLight animation. I did manage to extract an XML file from the xap packages but couldn’t find a solution to display/import without loosing to much time. I ended up compiling my agenda using ordinary screenshots (see below).

I sincerely hope they use a more blogger friendly solution next time.

На днях был запущен новый этап проекта TechDays.ru. Был полностью переделан дизайн сайта, и надо заметить он стал много лучше того ужаса что был раньше. Не всё конечно идеально, но движение явно в правильном направлении.

Ну и самое главное было добавлено множество новых докладов, из которых вы можете узнать новое о технологиях Microsoft, и научиться новым трюкам Касты можно скачивать в различных форматах, и даже в виде подкастов.

Group Policy Preferences

Group Policy Preferences – технология которая предоставляет огромные возможности и удобства для управления инфраструктурой организации. Но тем не менее, её появление прошло достаточно незаметно, и многие до сих пор не знают о её существовании и о том какие преимущества она может предоставить. Этот доклад кратко описывает основные возможности, и требования для внедрения GP Preferences в вашей среде.

Если вы не знаете что такое GP Preferences или еще не используете их – смотреть обязательно. Поверьте, вы сможете легко и с удовольствием избавиться от 99% своих логон/стартап скриптов после внедрения этой технологии. А для её внедрения надо совсем немного.

Тут будет немного унылых букавок с несколькими ссылками…

Как-то почитывай блог f_andry, я увидел пост об открытии регистрации на Sun TechDays 2009. Инфы тогда правда не было, так что посмотрел мельком и побрёл дальше читать всяко-разно…

А сегодня вот, будучи на работе, разговаривал с gg75 пока билды компилились. Решил порегаццо, да подписался в RSS на их новости – потому как пока конкретной инфы всё ещё почти нет.

Мне довелось быть на прошлом и позапрошлом таком мероприятии. Понравилось больше всего 2007 года – всёж я был там впервые и проторчал все дни почти не пропуска лекции. Поток информации был настолько велик и интересен, что приходил домой я наверное более уставший, чем от всяких там скучных и бредовых пар – Sun рассказывал больше и многие из тем меня действительно волновали.

В прошлом году было уже не совсем то – многое было посвящено общим вопросам, о которых я уже слышал и посему торчать весь день уже было не интересно, ограничился посещением отдельных лекций с разных потоков. Так же было несколько хуже с организацией и само место мне показалось как-то плохо подходящим – с одной стороны тесные помещения для большинства лекций, а с другой – столь же странно огромный зал для общих выступлений, кажущийся почти пустым. На этот раз обещают снова ЛенЭкспо, где мне кажется получше с этими пропорциями…

Так же он поведал о неком “Computer Science клуб при ПОМИ РАН“. Судя по описанию, это скучная и запарная для понимания штука, однако часть намечающихся там лекций мне интересна и я хочу попробовать походить. В это воскресенье поедем глянуть что к чему, там верное и уясню для себя – буду ходить или нет. Заявленные темы вроде как не являются проблемами, лежащими на виду и вполне можно жить (и даже реботать), кладя на них всякое там… Но с другой стороны, каждому, кто хочет стать выше простого кодирования, необходимы и некоторые теоретические изыскания.

Apesar de um atraso de sensivelmente 2 semanas, pelo qual pedimos desculpa aos nossos assíduos leitores, dois meses depois do nosso segundo aniversário, trazemos até vós mais uma edição da Revista PROGRAMAR.

Numa edição que inclui variados temas, encontrará, entre outros assuntos, um artigo sobre interacção com MySQL a partir da linguagem Python, um artigo sobre engenharia de software, uma análise de um livro sobre Python e um excelente artigo sobre network scanning.
