Crowd-sourcing isn’t isolated to techies, retailers, and academicians; it’s also used by the faith community.  Faith leaders and churches around the country have moved towards crowd-sourcing as a means to develop and promote their print and online media, engage readership, and deliver messages of faith to the masses. 

Rick Warren, one of America’s most influential religious leaders and guest speaker at President Obama’s inauguration employed the services of 99 designs to run an open source contest to solicit graphic designs for the cover of his new book entitled “The Hope You Need:  From the Lord’s Prayer“.  Ministers like Warren see crowd-sourcing not just as a means to solicit ideas from gifted and talented people, but also believe it has the potential to facilitate meaningful collaborations between the religious community and the secular community.  In short, religious leaders now realize that if they want religion to remain in the forefront of mainstream society, they have to engage mainstream tools and concepts.

In addition, crowd-sourcing has become a practice of many local churches around the country.   Instead of a pastor solely developing the content for a Sunday service, many of them now solicit input from their congregants and the community-at-large.  By engaging the “crowd”, some pastors believe they have been able to reach populations of people like Baby Boomers and younger people who might not otherwise participate in traditional organized religious activities.  As a result of engaging crowd-sourcing to develop content for sermons, congregations around the country have reported exponential growth in their memberships because the congregants seem to enjoy having input into their church doctrine.

I think it was pretty ingenuous of Rick Warren to use crowd-sourcing as a means to not only get a new cover design for his book, but to also reach people who might need spiritual guidance.  Likewise, I applaud the churches that have veered towards crowd-sourcing as a way to expand their congregations.  Maybe, the faith community is on to something.     

After all, if we can come together to design t-shirts, decide the name of a  new mascara, and even help Saturday Night Live writers drum up scripts, what’s the harm in forming a crowd to help spread the gospel?

Tunnel Rat, who blogs at itgrunt.com, has been having a torrid time with the rabid slumdogs who’re trying to take over the United States. The H[indu]-1B lobby of India Inc. is not content with causing the economic crisis by flooding American IT companies with cheap, incompetent slumdogs who drive one American corporation after another into the ground with their shoddy work. The subhuman slumdogs from the shithole sub-continent want to take over America, destroy everything that was built by Americans, loot all they can and then desert it like rats deserting a sinking ship. The smelly slumdog mongrels are perfect examples of parasitic scum that gorge on the host’s blood, fatten themselves and ultimately destroy the host completely. Anything that the Hindu slumdogs touch turns into dust. Even gold turns into shit when the dreaded dotheads from that Third World hellhole lay their hands on it.

Tunnel Rat is a courageous fighter who is determined to take on the powerful lobby of H[indu]-1B slumdogs funded by India Inc. and expose the damage the mangy dotheaded mongrels have done and are doing to the USA. As the smelly slumdogs take over one American corporation after another, they drive out the skilled American techies by force and fraud. They are replaced with thousands of semi-literate slumdogs from the shithole called India. Since the dotheads are incapable of writing even two lines of simple code, the entire American economy is coming to a grinding halt and millions of people are losing their jobs. The slumdog lobby still wants to let tens of thousands of semi-literate “upper caste” Hindu slumdogs into America as “guest workers”. These nasty, smelly, cow-piss drinking “upper caste” Hindu slumdogs run a Third World shithole called India where they force hundreds of millions of “dalits” and “untouchables” to live in crushing poverty by perpetrating atrocities against them on a monumental scale (called the caste system). These subhuman “upper caste” savages want to destroy the land of the free and the home of the brave and make Americans drink from clay cups as they do to their fellow Indians in their shithole nation. Tunnel Rat is waging a war to prevent these perverted pigs from turning America into a Third World shithole like their bitchland India. Or as he says, “We refuse to drink from your clay cup, madder chod!”

As one would expect, the slumdogs aren’t too happy about Tunnel Rat [TR]. The slimy subhumans have sent him death threats. They’ve also sent fake terrorist threats by impersonating him, causing TR to shut down his blog temporarily. The slumdogs were rejoicing, but it was back up in no time as a part of TR’s ‘Operation Honey Pot’. The slumdogs were walking right into a trap!

Though the slumdogs brought his blog down with a massive DDoS attack, they didn’t realize it was a trap laid out for them. TR trapped the slimy slumdogs by obtaining valuable information that would be used by the Feds to prosecute the criminal curry-munching cow-piss drinkers for their cyber crimes.

If the smelly savages from the shithole thought they could keep TR down with their cyber crimes, they were having a cow-piss induced hallucination. Tunnel Rat is back! The insurgency is spreading like wildfire and the days of the rabid slumdog mafia in America are numbered.

TR’s blog is an inspiration for American techies in the “insurgency” who are courageously resisting the masses of mangy dotheaded H[indu]-1B slumdog mongrels that are invading America. And he’s back with a bang!

Smelly subhuman sub-continental slumdogs! Cow-piss drinking, human sacrifice practising Hindu hoodlums! Perverted curry-munching, untouchability practising Hindi hooligans! I was jotting down some thoughts on what would I say if I was speaking to 1000 techies at a place like MIT. Since I am not speaking to them anytime soon, I will share them here . Obviously there is a lot more to say than the few points below.

1. Techies should focus on Big ideas. Big problems. Big markets. There are 7 billion customers worldwide for most innovations we can come up with.
2. Geographies matter less now than ever before in today’s globalized world. Technologies developed in US/Europe are bringing people closer the world over, e.g. Facebook and Twitter are helping people connect as far away as Brazil and Ghana, and are providing momentum to political movements in places like Iran. Similarly, technologies scaled in India and China  are bringing cheap clean power to the West, e.g. Suzlon.
3. Techies are often worried about sharing their ideas with others in case they are stolen. While there is an important role for intellectual property (IP), and proper IP advice should be taken in order file patents etc in time, in general good ideas become better when shared with others. Techies should find trusted advisors in their professors, experienced entrepreneurs and helpful investors who can guide, advise, and not just show but help form a path to success from the early stages on.
4. Technology and Engineering design are helping shape peoples’ lives, livelihoods and futures everywhere: from the IPhone use interface innovation to the design of a car for the masses (i.e. Tata Nano). It is often at the intersection of multiple disciplines that the most creative, and valuable solutions are found.
5. There is no bad time for entrepreneurship and for people to start companies. Entrepreneurs are eternally optimistic, cautiously skeptic, and driven to succeed. The best entrepreneurs have emerged in the most difficult economic times.
6. Techies should focus on solving real world problems. It is not just rewarding in a financial and moral sense – but it is also intellectually stimulating. I could not be more excited about the opportunity I have at General Catalyst to interact with young, bright, aspiring and inspiring entrepreneurs. So on my quest to find alternatives to Pandora to listen to while at work (1.  the limits of the new services and 2. the song choices on more niche music listening areas sucks.) I have come across 8 Tracks …

Finally i bought an iphone 3G (s).

I swear i wouldn’t be bothered if there was a 4G(s) or 5G(s) until further notice.

It was irrationally bought, straight after i got it. I swear my first thoughts were, “Oh man why did i buy it for?”.

But then again, i so super LOVE IT!

I still love my N97, haha now I have two super awesome phones that will last me for two years…
