Walking is one of the best exercises you can do to get active. It is also good way to lose weight, s

Walking is one of the best exercises you can do to get active. It is also good way to lose weight, shed inches and get a good workout. Walking will also help your health as well as your heart. Everyone can benefit from walking from time to time.

Just like all other exercises you need to start out slow. So when you are walking, if you are as out of shape as you think you are don’t start out speed walking you might get a little sick. So start out slow then speed up over time.

The most important thing to help you when walking is the right type of shoes. You are walking to become healthier not injured. So before you start walking make sure you have the right pair of shoes and if you don’t go to your local sports and athletics store and buy yourself a pair of walking/running shoes.

When you are buying walking shoes be sure that they are very comfortable on your feet. You don’t want to be walking and get cramps and blisters on your heels and feet. The length as well as how wide the shoe is going to matter too. You don’t want to have blisters after the first time walking in your new shoes; you won’t want to go walking anymore. So just take your time and buy the right type of walking shoe for you.

As you are looking for a new pair of walking shoes be sure that they are sold for walking and not something else. So if you are planning a walking/hiking trip you want a good shoe that’s suits both. The type of walking shoe you should have is one to be firm on your feet but should be able to bend easily as well. If you happen to be walking and it starts raining you need to get a shoe that will protect your feet from dampness causing blisters.

If you can not seem to find a good walking shoe you like you should then try the running shoe section. These types of shoes are good to walk or run in. You could buy a pair of hiking boots but they would only be useful for walking in the woods and not on pavement.

You should always dress to what or how the weather is acting. If it is hot and you want to get a good workout and really sweat then you might be interested in a sweat suit. Maybe you like shorts and a t shirt better. Maybe you just like shorts and no shirt if you’re a guy. It all depends on what the weather is like.

The only thing it takes to hurt your feet is a simple ankle turn to the left or right and you’re out of running for about a month. Waterproof shoes are good for anything. Walking or running it doesn’t matter which it is they are good for both and will protect you from the water or rain as well.

I wanted to talk to you about how you can repair your television stand. I know a lot of you are thinking that it is going to need an expensive finishing put on it. I suppose this could be true in some cases, but for a lot of people won’t have to do much to make it look like more. There are a number of reasons why your stand could get up over the years. Scratches are something that you just have to put up with because they just seem to happen. Broken parts and glass can sometimes happen too, but I have tips for helping you out.

Let’s say that you have glass or wood doors on the front of the stand. Let’s say they broke in some manner. The glass got shattered or the wood came off the hinge. You might think that it would expensive to fix these things, but it isn’t. You can just reorder the parts from your manufacturer. They keep things like glass and doors handy, just because they’re the most likely to break. It’s better to go in this direction because you’re going to get the exact size and don’t have to worry about cutting things.

Another tip for getting out scratches is simple nail polish. A scratch rarely ever gets directly into the wood. Typically it scratches the finish on the stand. When you use clear nail polish, you’re going to get the scratched area filled in completely. Since it is clear, you’ll get the appearance of the finish and it will look new.

In warm weather, wearing sandals will be a great bet to keep your feet cool and comfortable. But it would be much embarrassing if your sandals stink in a crowd. Odor is actually caused by the sweat that gets accumulated in the shoe soles and thus generates odor causing bacteria. Well, here you can find 5 simple tips to avoid stinking smell in your sandals and have a trouble-free walk.

Whether you have been all day long in shoes or just an evening party, your feet tend to sweat. This sweat gets wicked by the soles of the footwear and further causes to the growth of odor causing bacteria thus producing stinking smell. Shoe odor not only spoils your impression in the crowd but also leads to foot-health issues like athlete’s foot. So, proper care should be taken with regard to shoe odor. But how one can prevent or remove smell from the sandals? Well, keeping your sandals smell free is not so tough task to do. Below listed are some easy ways to make your shoes smell free.

The foremost tip is always keeps your feet neat and dirt free. Wash your feet with some good antibacterial soap and most importantly scrub and then clean in between the toes properly. Wipe and dry your feet immediately washing. Never wear sandals with wet foot as this may cause in quick odor formation.
If your feet prone to sweat excessively, then it is ideal to prefer some antiperspirants to prevent moisture formation. One can even find antibacterial gels and antifungal powders available in the market to apply on your feet to restrict the bacterial growth in your feet and in the sandals as well.
Spray your shoes with disinfectants and deodorizers specially designed for shoe odor. They help in avoiding odor in your shoes and indeed prevent your foot health as well.
After every wear expose them to air or if possible dry them under sunlight but not in direct sunlight. This will kill the bacteria and keep your shoes smell free. You can even try sprinkling baking soda or bicarbonate in your sandals and leave them an overnight after every wear. Bicarbonate is an ideal agent to kill the bacteria and leave your shoes stench free.
Wear footwear designed with breathable materials like canvas or mesh that are highly breathable in nature and thus avoid any moisture formation that cause stench.

It’s hard to find comfortable winter shoes that you can just easily slip into. Before Uggs arrived,

It’s hard to find comfortable winter shoes that you can just easily slip into. Before Uggs arrived, there weren’t very many brands that offered a multitude of designs for winter shoes. Now aside from Uggs, there is another footwear that will definitely keep your feet warm and toasty during the cold winter—the Crocs Mammoth.

The Crocs Mammoth is another great alternative to the winter boots and shoes that you have become so used to. The shoes made of the proprietary closed-cell resin Croslite and soft synthetic fur lining is the perfect shoes for the winter. Aside from providing the cushy foot bed that the Crocs has become known for, the shearling liner also gives the footwear a luxurious feeling. The shoes definitely provide ultra comfort for those who wish to wear them indoors or even outdoors.

The Crocs Mammoth are strapless slip-ons. Because they are very easy to slip into, they are perfect for use inside the home. You can also use them to do simple errands or to drive around during cold winter mornings. They may not provide the same level of protection as winter boots but they make great footwear for when you aren’t staying out in the cold for a very long time.

What’s great about these shoes is that the lining is removable and can be washed. This definitely makes cleaning more convenient. No other winter shoes offer the same convenience when it comes to cleaning and maintenance.

The shoes are so convenient to wear that you can wear them even if it’s not winter and your feet are feeling a little bit cold. If you feel like it, you can even take off the synthetic lining and just use the rubber clogs during warm days. Your mammoth Crocs becomes the perfect shoes for all kinds of weather.

The soles of the footwear are higher than those of the regular Crocs offering more protection from wet and cold grounds. The rubber material is also water proof so your feet will remain warm and dry inside the shoes.

The shearling lining compliments the color of the shoes and the shoes do come in many fun colors. Aesthetically, the Crocs Mammoth may not the best-looking footwear in the market but the comfort it provides well makes up for this deficiency. With the Crocs Mammoth available in many colors, it may be easier to pair with your outfit than the other winter shoes.

The Crocs Mammoth is also available for kids. The little children can wear them at home or even to school. They can also wear them when your family is having dinner out or when you need to do simple errands such as doing the groceries or taking your pets to the vet.

Another attraction of the footwear is that it costs a lot less than most winter boots. The Crocs Mammoth is still being sold for around $ 30 which is a great deal considering how important it is to protect your feet from the cold winter weather.

Buying as good pair of shoes for your baby or toddler can be a difficult business, and also an expen

Buying as good pair of shoes for your baby or toddler can be a difficult business, and also an expensive one. Trying to squeeze your fractious child’s foot into yet another pair of shoes whilst listening attentively to the assistant explaining the virtues of this particular brand, style and shape can become a monumental task and one liable to cause you to lose your nerve very easily. When faced with the astronomical cost of shoes for toddlers it can seem tempting to purchase cheaper alternatives. Certainly supermarkets offer a wide choice of children’s clothing lines, including shoes, and for a very good price.

However, the problem is that shoes for toddlers are of paramount importance. Two things will be happening to your toddler at the same stage that they need shoes. The first is that they are learning to stand, walk and run, all of which require good balance, control, grip and confidence of movement. The second thing is that their bones, muscles and joints will all be growing, developing, strengthening and prone to being easily misshaped or damaged if the wrong type of shoe is worn. Cheap shoes offer little support, and it can lead to the child developing bad posture, or even weakened or distorted joints, including bow leggedness.

As far as children’s shoes are concerned, particularly in the early formative years, it is well worth spending the extra money on a really good quality pair of shoes. Not only will they provide much greater support and encourage good posture and walking technique, but they are far more likely to last.

Cheaper shoes tend to have glued seams, whereas more expensive shoes are sewn. Seams on shoes that are sewn are very much stronger than glued ones, and with the rough treatment likely to be encountered on a toddler’s feet, durability is important.

Another aspect to consider is how the shoes will be done up. Laces look classic, and are harder for the child to undo themselves, especially if they are tied in a double knot. The laces can also be used to pull the sides of the shoe together evenly, and creates a better chance of the shoe remaining on the foot. Velcro on the other hand is much quicker and easier to do up and undo. However, your child will quickly realise this themselves, and along with the incredibly satisfying ripping sound they discover they can make with it, they’ll be undoing their shoe faster than you can put it back on their feet, and this can lead to all sorts of problems.

The style and pattern of the sole of the shoe will be important too. Having a good tread will help enormously in providing s good grip, especially when they try their hand (or foot) at mountaineering, wanting to climb up every step, get up on to every object they can and generally try getting everywhere. A deep, reliable tread will help them to gain their balance and learn to trust their judgement more when walking and running.

If in any doubt, use two critics when buying your toddler shoes. Use the trained professional who will help you choose shoes which are appropriate, supportive and the right size. But make sure you listen to your toddler too. If all they want to do is sit, or take their shoes off, then maybe another choice might be worth a look.

I am always big on intensity, but if you are involved in a serious walking program you can implement

I am always big on intensity, but if you are involved in a serious walking program you can implement certain techniques to change the overall effectiveness of your workout. The beauty of a walking program is that you can walk anywhere. Your walking can be done around the block, on a treadmill, in the yard, or at a local park. I just want to make a couple of suggestions as to how you can intensify what you are doing to get the most out of it.

1. Carry Buckets Of Water: Oh boy, this is simply good old yard work turned fitness! Get a couple of buckets of water and fill them up to the desired level and weight of your choice. Start at one end of your yard and make sure you are on level ground. Walk across the yard with a bucket in each hand. Try to focus on not spilling any of the water because this stability and focus will add up to bigger results in your workout. When you get as far as you want to go set down the buckets and without breaking stride continue on your walk. As you get better walk a specified distance with the water and without it. Alternate this pattern back and forth as you build up your endurance.

2. Walking Backwards Uphill: This is another way to change the dynamic of your walking power. Find a reasonably long hill with a steady incline from the base to the top. You can walk the hill up and back down a couple of times to get the blood flowing. Next, turn and face away from the hill and walk backwards up the hill all the way to the top. You will find out real quick that this will seriously burn you thighs. As you get better at this you will find that your personal fitness training and aerobic walking program will improve drastically by including this simple technique.

The most accurate way of solving the problem is by drilling out the lens area and replacing them with translucent units from the parts box or with scratchbuilt lenses made from translucent sprue. An easier way to depict taillight lenses is to paint the lens area of the chrome part with several coats of clear red paint.

Stay tuned…

George Bernard Shaw once wrote that plot was the creation, manoeuvering and destruction of relations

George Bernard Shaw once wrote that plot was the creation, manoeuvering and destruction of relationships between characters. Plot is derived from character and it’s sole purpose is to drive the story so the character can attempt to achieve their goal. Every scene in your script must either reveal something about the character and advance the story. Flat scenes become boring and lose your audeince. Here are some plot devices that can pique your plot:

DANGER – I cannot stress this one enough. It can be moral danger such as deciding to cheat on your spouse, or physical danger such as being trapped in a burning house. Raise the stakes and make your character earn their goal and pay for their mistakes. Give them insecurities, flaws, problems and issues we can all relate to. Make them fall into a ditch that they must crawl out of. A common plot device in action films is to either have multiple things go wrong at once or sequentially. The victim tries to escape, but they can’t find the keys to the car so they break in. Then there’s a flat battery so the can’t hot wire it to start. Then there’s no cell phone coverage… What’s needed may not arrive in time or not arrive at all. Oftentimes, dramatists use a Deus Ex Machina (literally God from the machine) whereby some life saving event occurs just in the nick of time before all is lost. Make sure this isn’t a lucky co-incidence or your audience will never forgive you.

TIME BOMB - Give your characters a ticking time clock where something seriously bad will happen if they don’t achieve a goal. Maybe there isn’t enough time to defuse the bomb? Perhaps the main character doesn’t know how to defuse the bomb. Maybe the main character isn’t even aware of the bomb. Does the audience know? Giving either the audience or the main character such a superior position adds intrigue and interest. Alternatively, the main character can simply run out of options to achieve their goal rather than out of time.

CONFESSION – After deep humiliation make your character confess to a secret, shortcoming, wound or a deep seeded fear or shame. Maybe they realise the error of their ways and take responsibility for their actions. Consider your audience. Being born out of wedlock is generally not considered a shameful act in the Western world. Forcing a pregnant unwed couple to marry may be acceptable is some cultures, but not in others. Play with morality in your plot. The beauty of it is that it’s never clearly right or wrong like a maths problem. Is it wrong to kill someone? What if they killed your family? What if it is in self defense?

BETRAYAL – The hero’s buddy changes sides or is revealed as a traitor. What if the main character doesn’t realise this, or does so when it’s too late? What if the traitor leads them into a trap?

DILEMMA – The hero is forced to make a choice between two equally bad alternatives. Consider the family with premature Siamese twins who must decide which one survives and which one doesn’t. What if the main character consciously decides not to act because they are faced with issues of duty for the higher good? Or even love?

OBSTACLES – External influences such as bad weather or natural disasters forcing them to stop. Car or other vital piece of machinery breaks down and a replacement part is not immediately forthcoming. What if their progress is stalled due to injury, illness or other physical condition such as pregnancy or diabetes? What if someone in their team is killed or kidnapped? Running out of bullets, money, food, air all add to the excitement of danger.

DISCOVERY – The element of surprise and shock always jolts your audience. Examples of this include a cover been blown of an undercover cop, the presence of an intruder being noticed, an escalating lie has been revealed. A discovery must pivot your story into a new direction, not simply act as a minor irritant. Remember the scene in “Mad Men” where Betty discovers Don’s true identity by opening a locked drawer? She didn’t sigh and carry on, she left him. Discoveries can also be wild goose chases. Following the wrong lead, the wrong map or the wrong advice.

LOVE – Due to it’s universality, love will always add to a plot. What if a past lover returns? Consider Jodie Foster in “Sommersby”, when she tells her returned “husband” that he’s not the man she married because she didn’t love him like she loves the impostor. Add a love triangle; one bride versus two grooms. Add gender swaps, such as “Tootsie” who had enamored a man who thinks she’s a woman. Also consider the third wheel. The buddy who suddenly becomes the bride’s love interest when he reveals his true self. Love is also used to tame a savage, misanthropic heart.

TRAITS – Give your character some endearing traits so the audience can partially overlook their negative ones. Give them courage, give them love. give them scruples so they are fighting for a good cause where the collateral damages justifies the cause, make them perform a good deed, make them desirable such as handsome, physical and funny. Make them spiritual, generous and wise. Ensure it all emerges from a place of truth and authenticity. Audiences retract from phonies. Give them fears, traumas which block their growth, masks which prevent other characters from seeing their real self.

LIKES – Make your characters like children, animals and art. Give them great taste in cars, partners, houses, music, fashion, food and overall lifestyle. Audiences tend to admire what they aspire to be or what they perceive to be desirable.

So go forth and beef up those plotlines.

Just an update on the latest BIAB adventure I have tried…. Spillsmostofit and I did a full size BIAB the other day. And as a side experiment we tried to do a little Partigyle brewing.

We did our main brew mostly as normal, but instead of letting the bag drain completely out to get the most wort possible… we transferred it still quite wet to another pot that had a bit of hot water in it and “sparged”

Spills normally does this as a slight modification to the BIAB technique, to get a bit of extra efficiency, but this time instead of adding the weak wort back to the kettle, we kept it seperate to make a “small” beer with.

Our main wort gave us 24litres of 1.065 wort into a No-Chill cube. The small beer ended up being about 10litres of 1.030 that Spills boiled and hopped today (I think he added a little DME to up the OG a bit)

So now we have a modified version of Denny’s Rye IPA split into two 12litre batches, one to be fermented with Fermentis US05 and one I am going to ferment with fermentis S04. And also a 10litre batch of “light” rye ale hopped with Wilamette, cascade and a little chinook that is already bubbling away with US05.

Hey Guys,

This will be the last update on my end for a while as I fulfill the final commitments of my travel schedule and take the necessary steps to make this the most amazing December of my life. As I prepare for another Masterclass weekend tomorrow, I thought I’d write a post for everyone out there.

Challenging Assumptions

“Maybe she’s with her boyfriend.”

“Maybe she has better things to do.”

“Maybe she’s busy.”

“Maybe she doesn’t want to talk.”

Sound familiar? It most certainly does to me. These were the excuses that I gave myself again and again when I hesitated upon making an approach. I am not going to lie : there is no denying that the Asian culture here is not as used to dealing with interactions from complete strangers and as a young man living within the Singaporean society, all the more these excuses actually seem like valid reasons for me to not approach a woman.

Back when I was still starting to make sense of the dynamics between men and women, I found myself giving lots of excuses. Like one of my early mentors, Val, would tell you, I would go out for 4-5 hours on some days and not do a single approach. I was always waiting for the right moment. My inexperience was what caused my mind to wander and make me nervous. The truth is, in those seemingly “perfect” moments, there was a very real chance that things were not as perfect as I thought they were. It was very possible that a girl who was alone and bored (2 positive requisites for a successful interaction) was actually having some alone time and does not want to be disturbed.

In my experience thus far, I’ll strongly believe : There is no perfect moment.

So what should I do?

There are many ways in which a person can solve this problem (drink alcohol, getting someone to push them, drug abuse etc.). But I want to share with you my personal and most favorite solution.

Challenge your assumptions. Developing a good understanding of the dynamics between men and women (which is what TDD specializes in) will help immensely. The more knowledge I had, the clearer things became and the more confident I was. With this new found knowledge and confidence, it was a lot easier to approach a woman despite these assumptions I had in my head.

Be comfortable with success and failure. There is no such thing as PERFECTION. If you have been thinking that there will be a magic pill out there that will bring you instant success with women, let me smash that belief for you right now : There isn’t. As rare as they are, I am not ashamed to admit it : there are times where I did not have a successful interaction. These times are usually due to logistics and matters I can not control. What I do is this : Celebrate from the successes, learn the lessons from the failures and move on.

And here’s where it gets better…

The more I actually approached women successfully, the more it cemented the lesson in my head that all these assumptions were just my mind’s way of protecting my ego. I realised that most of the time, all these assumptions turn out to be false. In fact, as I practiced further, I realised that even if my assumptions proved to be right, by the law of X=X, it turned out that my undeniable good-vibe made the woman commit to an interaction with me. With the addition of my high-level awareness, I was more than capable of continuing the interaction very smoothly because I knew the dynamics of a good Macro Plan thus enabling me to make spontaneous decisions and enable me to give the women what they wanted : DIRECTION.

I adopt this same belief to all aspects of my life. Challenging assumptions also helps your life become less complicated. Most of the time, we already know whether or not we want to escalate things with women or with a task at hand. It is all these assumptions that cause unnecessary worry and hold us back. Knowing that there is not perfect moment and that failure and success are all very realistic possibilities no matter what, I choose to act. It is better to take a chance and gain a learning lesson from it than to not take one at all and regret.

You know what you want. Now push aside all these assumptions and just take action to make it yours!

Live and Love,

Unfortunately there’s no real way of explaining more about this project without getting into the more ‘techie’ details of this technique. So for those who know about it, skip the next two paragraphs, those who don’t, put your tech-hat on and read away…

Basically, ‘The Glyn Johns Technique’ is a drum micing technique, somewhat unsurprisingly, pioneered by a recording engineer called Glyn Johns (although some of the media I’ve read related to this attempt to dispell this but do not really have a proper arguement other than simple opinion, so this is how I will refer to it). So far so what, right? Ok, well what about I name-drop a few of the bands whos recordings he used this technique on – Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Steve Miller, The Eagles and I believe the first Led Zep album. Now what if I tell you the technique itself involves only four microphones (Two overheads, a kick drum and a snare mic). Interested now?

Firstly the most important aspect of this technique isn’t necessarily the equipment you use, (although it helps considerably if you have some decent mics of course) but how good your drummer and his/her kit is. If it’s not well-tuned or your drummer has no dynamic range in their repetiore then this technique is probably not for you. Your second most important item on the checklist – A tape measure. Yep, a tape measure! This technique relies on an almost exact measurement of the mic distance relative to the position of the snare drum. The general consensus is for the overhead mics to be between 38-40 Inches from the centre of the snare drum. One of which is measured at this distance directly above the snare, facing towards the kick pedal. The other comes in from the right of the drummer (or left I guess if your drummer plays with the kit set up for a left-hander) and hovering six inches above the floor tom and pointing towards the snare and hi-hat. These mics should be some decent condensers (matched stereo-pair) or possibly some ribbon microphones, for heightened sensitivity. The other two are for general close-micing of the kick and snare (so a Shure SM57 and AKG D112 would be perfectly adequate).

Now that’s all out the way, here’s how a couple of friends and I worked and adapted it:

We first tried it all as per above but hit a few roadblocks straight off the bat; Firstly, the kick sounded very flat and dull (this could have been due to the mic, unfortunately not the greatest) but we did find moving this further away from the beater head gave a more rounded sound. The overheads sounded great, we didn’t need to adjust their relative positions at all (although we will at a later date, just for experimentation). We later decided to utilise a room mic (a Rode NT2A positioned in the far corner of the room from the kit) which helped bring out the punchy-ness of the kick and brighten up the overall sound when added to the mix. We got some decent results in the end from a couple of hours work. Hopefully after practicing this for a while we’ll be able to get a good sound each time.

Please bear in mind that the adjustments we made were mainly down to the room we were recording in, so the extra things we done won’t fix every problem that may occur as there are too many variables to consider. However, our experiment has proven that this technique, even in the hands of some rookie recording engineers, can create good results.

The last stage is to pan the overheads properly for the mix; The mic over the snare needs to be panned half way to the right, and the other needs to be panned hard left to create a decent stereo image.

We had some great fun playing around with this and I urge any budding recording engineers to give this a go, just to find out the advantages this minimalist technique can offer.

Hello everyone,

This is the tenth article of my series of How to Photograph Up-Close. In this series of articles I have discussed various info to start you on a wonderful journey of photographing close up. I hope that I have inspired you to go-for-it and enjoy the macro world. Every time I shoot something new I learn something new. Whether it be the subject or the process itself, it’s a wonderful feeling to learn something new everyday.

Before I start this post on printing, let’s touch on what I have discussed in this series of articles to refresh your memory.

I began my series of How to Photograph Up Close with an Introduction to discuss how the series would be set up. I said I would plan on discussing close-up photography and would give you links to read the technical information. These articles will have various books, magazine articles, and links to help you learn this style of photography. I stressed that to make a professional photograph you will need excellent equipment, patience and of course have fun!

The second article, Cameras, Lens, and Tripods, I talked about the digital single lens reflex camera, various macro lens’ and of course tripods. I added links with technical info on the equipment and links to companies for you to check out, if you want to purchase these goodies. The reading for this post was Hogan’s article on photography equipment.

The third article, Fun Gadgets for Macro Photographing, discussed equipment to make it easier while you’re shooting close-up. I talked about some of my favorite gadgets…the focusing rack, ball heads for your tripod, the angle finder to help you focus, a cable release to help minimize the shake of the camera, and the ring light flash. You can read all about these gadgets on this post. Also, I wanted you to check out John Shaw’s book, “Macro & Nature”. It’s an old edition but I like his concept of macro photo skills.

The fourth article discussed Basic Macro shots using Natural light. This post was a tutorial on using natural light and the importance of knowing the F-Stops, Shutter Speeds & the ISO. I talked about how I start a project and how the depth-of-field affects your shots especially when you’re photographing close-up. The reading material I gave you for this post is a wonderful book by Nicki Wheeler, “The Complete Guide to Close-up and Macro Photography”

The fifth article in this series, Digital Darkroom Basics, was a must… I discussed the software you most likely received when you purchased your digital camera and various formats like a tiff, jpeg, and raw files. The reading material on this post is by Hoddinott, “Digital Macro Photography”. Hoddinott has some excellent info on digital dark-rooming.

The sixth article, Creative Techniques using Natural Light, was on just that, techniques using natural light. I also discussed some art rules and color info, (the rules of thirds & the color theory), and I focused on some fun macro shots with textures, water drops and backlighting. The reading for this post Harold Davis’ article, “Focusing on What Matters”.

The seventh article, Alternative Lighting Techniques #1, discussed exposure, HDR (high definition range) and zone levels. I gave you info on examples of light reflectors, flashes, and flash diffusers. There are some examples of photographs shot with natural light and a flash to show you the difference between them both and again I talked a bit about the f-stops and shutter speeds. The reading on this post was, “Closeup shooting” by Cyrill Harnischmacher’s.

Because I didn’t want to overload you with several lighting techniques in the seventh article, I decided to discuss more lighting in the eighth, Alternative Lighting Techniques #2. I talked about using a flashlight for lighting your subject and linked you to technical info on color temperature. This article gives you a kit that works awesome for macro photographing. I also discussed strobe lighting, various grids, and snoots. The reading suggestion on this post was an article by Urs Recher, on Light Lessons, and an excellent book on lighting is by Robert Morrissey, “Master Lighting Guide”.

The ninth article in the series, Alternative Lighting Techniques #3, had more information on lighting techniques using umbrellas and fun tools you can use with an umbrella. I also talked about reflective surfaces and using a tent to help with this problem. I gave you a link to help you make a tent if you didn’t want to purchase one and showed you some of my photographs using my tent. This post gave you some of my favorite magazines for you to check out.

This article, Printing your Close-up Photograph, will discuss how to make that perfect print. From this series you should be able to photograph a great macro shot…and how to print your work. You have taken time to perfect your skills and now I would like to talk about the ending result…put a smile on your face and print your favorite work!

If you don’t have a printer you can use outside printer companies, which is nice when you have time for mailing etc… Of course you can go to Costco but I’m not talking about quick prints…I’m talking about professional prints. These are the companies I have used and recommend… West Coast Imaging, Nations photolab.com, & if you want fun products with your images on them, check out Mpix.com.

But, if you are like me and really want your colors perfect using specific paper to add quality to your print, then you will need to purchase a printer. I use Epson printers and I also use their paper.

If you want more details on various printers, check out this link I found, Printerinfo.com, so you can read up on printers before you invest your money. As you will see, professional printers can be expensive.

I really need to stress that if you do have your own printer, please calibrate your printer to your monitor. I used to go crazy and waste time, ink, and paper, trying to achieve what I saw on my monitor and what was actually printing. Yes, there are techniques you can use if you know your color #’s but that’s for a later and more detailed post.

I would suggest using Spyder to calibrate your monitor.

Spyder

From datacolor.com

Check around for pricing… I found this site, Calibration-Direct.com…you can start with them for some bargain shopping and you can always check out Amazon.

Ok, let’s go through some basic steps on printing your photograph… When you purchase your photo paper you will see instructions on printing. READ THEM, it does make a difference!

Let us print this image:

Today, I went over the various articles on How to Photograph Up Close and because you now have the knowledge to create an awesome close-up photograph… you will be able to print that amazing shot! Print your favorites and put a huge smile on your face to remember the steps you achieve to make this photo. A couple of things to remember when you print:

•	Select your printer
•	Select the size you want printed
•	Make sure you have read your info on the paper you choose to print on.
•	Select the correct paper, for example “Epson fine art paper matte finish”.
•	Select if the printer or your software will color manage your print.
•	Select the “fine” print quality. If your printer is slow, be patient…it’s worth it.

Also, I highly recommend you use a program like Spyder to calibrate your monitor with your printer.

I would like you to read this link on Printing Quality Photos and “Fine Art Printing for Photographers” by Steinmueller & Gulbins, check it out at Amazon.com.

Hope this helps you feel confident to print, print, & print some more. Happy Fall to you all and hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Reasons to step mash: to increase yield, for incompletely modified malts (breakdown protein carbohyd

Reasons to step mash:

to increase yield, for incompletely modified malts (breakdown protein carbohydrate matrix, make sugar more available)

change fermentability and how much dextrins etc are left behind after fermentation

for highly fermentable, light body, try 145 beta amalyze 30 minutes, 155 to 160 for a short time (or 122 then 145, then 158)

quick beta then 160 to 165 for longer time to build up the dextrins and make fermentability low

adjunct (corn and rice > 25% grist) - protein rest for more protein, to add more protein since the adjuncts don’t have proteins – this will help with head retention

Reasons you might not want to step mash:

Grains are so well modified now so it is not really needed

Ales don’t usually need it because ales are OK with more body

Sacchrification ranges overlap, so single step mash will have beta working fast as it denatures, alpha is working slower but keeps working as not denaturing

Timing

Usually rest about 20 to 30 minutes at each step

Longer mashing will make sugar smaller and more fermentable

Slow heating to 169 or so will pass through the various ranges. Go slow and you don’t have to stop. Starting temp (dough in) will determine how much protein will be created and affect body

Steps you can hit -

dough in 110 a little while

protien and beta glucanase- 110 to 125

beta 140 to 150

alpha 155 to 165

mash out – will freeze or lock profile? 169 or less for 10 or so minutes

Types of rests from the bottom

Yippee! I am leaving it here. I have added a few touches with some basic Photoshop techniques. The soft shadow to give the cut out effect is created using good old Gaussian Blur on a solid copy of the whole figure dropped behind the main character.

I also couldn’t resist adding some soft shadow to his wonderful hair. The thing is with me, I could go on and on making changes, but what I tend to do is pretend I am on a deadline. This is a good exercise for illustrators as it keeps your brain active and able to make decisions about the direction of a piece as you work on it and within the time limit.

Including all the commentary on this process, this work has taken me about 8 hours.

I hope you like the finished result. I would love to hear your comments and if you are a budding illustrator with any questions on my process and own experience, please drop me a question in the comment section and I will be happy to reply.
