M. 14 11/17/09

Sometimes I can’t stand how shy I can be. I can be unbearably shy. Granted, I’ve gotten much better with getting over my shyness, due to all the organized social sports I have been participating in, in my post-college life. But I still have a shy temperament. I am still supremely shy when it comes down to being in a new situation or being around people I don’t know. Yesterday was a fine example of this…

I was sitting on the Metro on my way home. The train wasn’t particularly crowded. There were two seats perpendicular to my single seat that had just emptied up. I partially looked up as two attractive guys around my age walked over and took a seat in the seats. There were other seats they could have taken and it seemed like they deliberately sat next to me, which was flattering. These guys were really close to me and I really wanted to turn my head to get a better look at them, but didn’t want them to catch me doing so. I kind of just sat there.

Maybe the guys were trying to get my attention when they started reading and commenting on the poster that was on the train wall right above my head. I cracked a smile when the guys started joking around. When we got to the Tenleytown stop, one guy asked his buddy if this was their stop. It wasn’t and they began to joke about the name, Tenleytown. It was kind of dumb, but funny as they were calling it, “Techno Town;” making up stories about how in Techno Town they only play techno music. It kind of seemed like they were joking around in front of me, seeking a positive reaction from me. They probably were trying to get my attention. Too bad, I was way too shy.

This music discussion led them into a conversation about some really great and nice karaoke bar that was part of a Vietnamese or Thai restaurant. Apparently something happened where they were given free beers from someone. (Yeah, I know this is weird that I am recounting their conversations. But since I didn’t get a good look at them, this is all I have for the memory.)

Then one of the guys looked across the aisle to read the headline on a newspaper some man was reading. The man seemed kind of peeved that this guy was reading his paper from the other side of the train. I thought it was kind of funny. But I kept looking forward/down, unable to at least look at these guys. I really wanted to say something to them, but couldn’t muster anything, nor could I decide what I would even say. I felt terrible.

You know, if I were drunk or something, I would have no problem striking up a conversation with these guys. And the problem is, if under alcohol’s influence, I probably would only just do something simple like look at them or say, “hi.” Those things really aren’t anything major, but I still can not bring myself to do that. But with a little influence from something like alcohol to lower my inhibitions, I seem to almost act like a normal not-shy person. (Now, I’m not saying that I should drink alcoholic beverages all the time. I’m just noting what a little inhibition can do for me in a good way.)

It was for some question from like 2 years ago about techno music that i answered. I don’t know if the original question asker ever saw people’s answers. Sometimes people ask questions and never go back to see if people answered or not for various reasons.

The “Jack it” parties are a series of Detroit-based events dedicated
to combining various genres of music to ignite the dance-floor. This
series was influenced by the early days of underground music in
Detroit, where you would hear: Chicago House, Detroit House (Techno),
Industrial, Hip-hop, 80’s Rock, Disco, Electro, etc., not as separate
sets, but combined together in the mix. People played whatever they
were feeling. The only rule being it had to be bumping and get people
moving on the floor. This type of fusion inspired creativity and
originality in Detroit artists and groomed them to become some of the
best DJs in the world.

Matthew Dear aka Audion (Spectral), False (Minus) and Jabberjaw (Perlon),
is an electronic music innovator, a globally recognized DJ talent and
a founder of the acclaimed Spectral Sound label.
Matthew’s dark alter ego Audion first stormed the electronic-music
scene in 2004, unveiling a trilogy of pulverizing singles that would
ultimately re-align today’s techno sound. In 2006, Audion followed the
series with the breakthrough club anthem “Mouth To Mouth,” a
constantly ascending work of
art that has captured the imagination of DJs and fans in all club
genres worldwide. Now it’s 2009, and Audion is re-emerging with a new plan to take his
project to new heights, including a load of new boundary-pushing
material and a hypnotic, highly detailed live show. Pushing the
boundaries of techno, Audion’s cutting-edge sound is a crowd-pleaser.

By fusing man and machine into an indistinguishable unit, Audion
controls his audiences’ collective consciousness in new,
never-before-seen ways. At the center of the show is a custom video
setup employing the talents of Audion art director/cover designer Will
Calcutt and artist Eno Henze, who has created psychedelic visuals at
Frankfurt’s Cocoon club and gallery exhibitions worldwide.

Audion’s live show will debut in summer 2009 at select technologically
advanced festivals and clubs. These events are powerful experiments in
chaos and hypnotic depth, tearing down the walls of the live
electronic-music experience.
both of the headliners are living here in Seattle now, but have been in the techno biz for combined total of over 40 years!!!
Incredible…

Orlando Voorn
Night Vision, Triangle.Records, Minimalsoul,
As one of the first Dutch musicians to establish a vital connection between Detroit and Amsterdam, Orlando Voorn has long been recognized as one of the Netherland’s most original and inventive producers in the world of electronic dance music.

Voorn began djing at the tender age of 12 and went on to win the Dutch DMC DJ Championships in 1986 with his own characteristic blend of hiphop and electro. Towards the end of the eighties he acquired his first sequencer, packed away his turntables and turned his hand to producing.

Following a series of dancefloor tracks recorded for the now defunct Lower East Side Records under the monniker of Frequency in the early nineties (Where Is Your Evidence, Kiss The Sky…), he was introduced to Juan Atkins (Industrial Metal, Game One) and went on to work with both Derrick May and Blake Baxter (as one half of the Ghetto Brothers). Voorn was also recording as Nighttripper (Tone Exploitation), Format (Solid Session – one of the most sought after classic techno records until its re-release in 1998), Basic Bastard, The Living Room, Baruka, Fix (Flash on Kevin Saunderson’s legendary KMS label), Dope Dog, Boy (Paco Di Bango’s World) and Stalker (The Stalker/The Riderman)… Many of these tracks can be heard on the double cd Best of Nightvision.

Having made his mark producing his own vision of techno, ambient and hiphop and adamantly sidestepping genre limitations thus far, Voorn’s announcement that his “Redeye” album would see a foray into drum’n’bass territory aroused both anticipation and curiosity. While Voorn undoubtedly has an ear for melody, this has always been combined with an innate understanding of the importance of atmosphere and tension in music. Like Squarepusher, Amon Tobin, and Photek, he uses drum’n’bass rhythms to create something beyond pure dance music.

Computer Controlled

Larry, Computer Controlled, DJ AcidTed, DJ Frantik. So many names, not enough Acid?!? Born right here in the Midwest, the birthplace of Acid House music no less. Larry is one of a few Acid men still preaching the holy Acid gospel. Whether on stage as a DJ/Live PA for the past 13 years, bringing acid to the masses, or in the studio creating his various releases over the past 9, Larry has made a major contribution to Midwest Electronic Music. Now standing alongside his longtime idols Woody McBride, Hyperactive, etc., with his own international releases on Acid Revolt Unit France, Acid Jack Records Germany, Communique’ Records, Napalm Enema Recordings, Alien Imprint, Urbanground Records, Primal Instinct Recordings, as well as Remixes and his various collaboration projects (Acid Pranksters w/Poor Boy Rich and AcidHazard W/PacoDebongo), there seems to be no end in site, nor, limit to what this man is capable of.

If you like music, and you enjoy sampling cutting-edge tracks by new talent, you need to check out a great new site called SoundCloud. Regular readers may have noticed that I posted some tracks in an earlier message using the high-quality SoundCloud audio player. The player is a very versatile utility, letting you upload a track, edit, scrunch, tweak and manipulate it all over the place. Then playback and store the new creation.

SoundCloud is also a vast community of music creators and fans which offers quick-and-easy, down-and-dirty facility for uploading and sharing sound tracks. In just a few days of poking around, I have found some interesting tracks. Here is one posted by a young man who calls himself T-Cash. He presents it as “inspired by an old church song.” T-Cash has stepped-up the beat and pushed that melody through the electronic instrument window to create a “Funky Piano/Tech/Power-guitar” track that I think is really good. Give a listen to The Golden City RC-2:

Take a look at the Sidebar (over to the right) and you will see a button/link inviting you, or anyone you know, to send me a soundtrack via my personal “drop box” at SoundCloud. I will listen, give the sender/composer/arranger/whoever some feedback and will consider posting the best tracks on this site. Hopefully, some hard-working new talent will get a modicum of exposure. We ain’t the big-time but, heck, we are pushing toward 40,000 hits and we just came online in January of 2009. It took quite a while to get the hang of it and develop enough decent content to invite scrutiny so, actually, we have only really been “out there” about six months.

Here is what you are looking for on the Sidebar:

Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Megan Fox

I know the guys may protest – but I don’t really care. These overexposed slutty celebrities are so over, and I’m not the only one sick of them in 2009. Take Paris Hilton for example, after she hooked up with Doug Reinhardt, and broke up, and then hooked up with Cristiano Ronaldo, and broke up, and went back to Doug – her so-called fame starts declining in the speed of light. Sure, she still gets photographed by paparazzi but no one really gives a shit about her anymore. Lindsay Lohan, her one-time BFF, doesn’t exactly fare well in the fame department either this year. She could not get a decent role, the only movie she actually starred in (Labor Pains) got degraded to a TV movie and was gone out of people’s minds in a matter of seconds. Even her lesbian lover Samantha Ronson got sick of her and kicked her sorry ass to the curb, prompting her unintelligible Twitter rant and subsequent breakdown. Now she only gets a hosting gig in Singapore (and to add insult to injury, she only got the gig after a Pussycat Doll backed out at the last minute) instead of six-figures movie deals. Megan Fox on the other hand, got a better fate when Transformers 2: Revenge of The Fallen became another summer hit, but ever since then, her star quickly dimmed – not to mention, her penchant for saying the wrong things during interviews made her the mock of the town. Just a few months after Transformers, her movie Jennifer’s Body bombed in the box office, proving overexposure isn’t good for anyone.

2/ Fur.

Fur Coats: Not So Hot Anymore

I’m not really anti-fur but I’m not pro-fur either. I love animals, but I still eat meat so I don’t want to seem like a hypocrite by criticizing people who wear fur. I don’t wear fur, simply because I live in the tropics, way too hot to wear anything thicker than a thin cardigan, and because furs are generally really expensive and faux fur is way more affordable and just as warm, in my opinion. However, with PETA aggressively campaigning against fur, 2009 is really not the year for furs. Sure, Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour still struts down the streets of Manhattan in a fur coat, but more and more people are switching to faux, with more and more celebrities joining the PETA bandwagon. Their “I’d Rather Be Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign is a success with Karina Smirnoff of Dancing With The Stars fame as their latest spokesperson. Not to mention, most people avoid wearing fur just so they won’t be attacked by PETA – whose members are getting more and more aggressive, throwing anything from flour to red paint – which, let’s face it is a little more than annoying. So this season, put those fur coats back in the closet and just fake it. Faux fabulous, baby.

3/ Kanye West.

Kanye West and Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards 2009

Oh Kanye. How are the mighty fallen! Okay, let’s face it – he’s no stranger to both controversy and throwing temper tantrums in award shows, but the stunt he pulled at the VMAs turned out to backfire in massive proportion, so much so that Kanye did the one thing he has never done: apologized profusely; using any kind of media that would let him. If you don’t know what he did that got the whole world turned on him, well then you must’ve been living under a rock. Google Kanye West Taylor Swift for more info, because I’m definitely tired of repeating the story. Even after his mea culpa that sounded quite sincere, the general public is still isn’t satisfied. They’re still calling for boycott of everything Kanye, and it looks like Kanye will have to do more than just continually apologizing to be able to get back on the fame wagon.

4/ Techno Music.

A Techno DJ Booth

I’m not a big fan of techno music to begin with, maybe because I’ve never done drugs, not even recreationally (well, except for weed, but then again some people may argue that weeds are not really drugs), but seeing the rise of the new celebrity DJs lately I have to say techno music is definitely no longer the music of choice for clubgoers, aside from those who are into it for the drugs, of course. One of the most revered DJ of the past few years is the late great DJ AM, who never really got into techno to begin with. And newer crop of celebrity DJs like Joel and Benji Madden of Good Charlotte fame, Danny Masterson of That 70s Show fame, Steve Aoki, and of course, Mark Ronson’s little sister who was more famous in the media for her tumultuous relationship with Lindsay Lohan, Samantha Ronson – they don’t really play techno music and opt for the mash up of rock and hip hop, something that was popularized by DJ AM and Mark Ronson in the New York, LA and London club scenes in the last decade or so. I have to say, I am quite relieved that the techno trend pretty much loses its popularity this year. At least this time, I can really enjoy going to clubs instead of getting a headache after half an hour from the same beat that keeps repeating over and over again.

5/ Myspace.

Myspace: So three years ago

Ah, the fickle minds of social networking enthusiasts. I remember three years ago I joined Myspace at the height of its popularity and enjoyed the perks of “social networking” in the site for a few months, until I got bored and switched to Facebook. Looks like I wasn’t the only one. By 2008, Facebook’s popularity has reached epic status, with everyone from your average teenager to presidential candidates having a Facebook account. Of course by 2009, Twitter took over the world – which sent Facebook into a defensive mode by launching its own Twitter-like feature: Facebook Lite. But Myspace, like its predecessor Friendster, never really quite managed to gain its former glory. Although it still exists, no one uses it anymore except for musicians as a way to get in touch with their fan base. Even now the musicians have switched to Facebook and Twitter to reach more followers. I have a feeling that once some other Silicon Valley geek creates the newest social networking site, Myspace will finally roll up its carpet and get ready to join Friendster in the “what once was…” department.

So there you go, my list of the five things that are not so hot in 2009. Of course, in a matter of months this list could very well become the “What’s Hot” list, but for now, let’s just assume they’ll stick around for a while and avoid these five things if we want to sound cool.

xoxo
