There are some reports of a bomb threat at Technopark Trivandrum yesterday. (october 13/october 14)

There are some reports of a bomb threat at Technopark Trivandrum yesterday. (october 13/october 14) (update – turns out it was a drill indeed. The anti-terrorist drill involved people sneaking past the Technopark security and successfully planting a bomb atop one of the best known buildings in Technopark (in this case Bhavani – with UST global, Infosys, Allianz Cornhill etc part of the companies with offices there))

(Also updated – the latest (usual) insenstive IT joke doing the rounds – it seems if terrorists were to ever hit technopark, considering their age group they would most likely be carrying resumes for distribution ! And heres the punchline, – that considering their passion, irregard for personal safety/health, work life balance, or working late hours, and their exceptional skills in tactical and strategic planning, plus their low training costs (they can be put up in barracks), the HR’s would most likely snap them up!)

This includes some reports that people have been asked to evacuate buildings within Technopark. There were some high security arrangements at the entrance of Technopark in the morning, but i thought it might be for some VIP visit. A few days ago i think Chief minister Achutanandan had visited the Technopark for some inauguration. But the security in front of Technopark today morning was especially strong. Usually the police do not take part in the policing of the cars entering technopark, but today even the police were participating. Normally they just stand at the entrance of Technopark and pretty much hang loose. Some people are saying it was a drill of some sort, but those reports are talking of some anti-terrorist drill in Kollam and Alapuzha. So no one is clear. Technopark was always said to be a potential target for terroris/bomb attacks. Particularly since Technopark has grown in prominence with arrival of Infosys etc. Due to the lack of knowledge of the average layperson, places like Trivandrum are supposed to have ‘arrived’ only when the big three come – Infosys, TCS and Wipro. Right now only TCS is here and that too for training . Speaking of TCS, I suppose the north indian guys and girls living here are going to have a tough time with police checks. The cops here are bound to look at any hindi or non malayalam speaking individual suspiciously.

Besides the northies sometimes do get agitated and speak loudly etc And thats more than enough to scare a ‘just about to be retired, pot bellied’ kerala cop Out comes the gu..er lathi..

In reality since Trivandrum (and specially Technopark) is close to the coastline it is probably easier to infiltrate than the inner regions. It was the faily non cosmopolitan atmosphere (with outsiders standing out like a thumb) that caused the relative safety. But now with increasing urbanisation, lack of vigilante chayakadas (neighbourhood teashops that serve as centers of intelligence) and the westernisation of the younger crowd, its difficult to spot an outsider (or rather all people look like an offshoot of the base version of the jeans clad, ‘t-shirt and sneakers’ combo (with the mandatory ipod). Not that looking at outsiders suspicously is a good thing, but things have changed.

Anyway no bad news so far. Hope its a rumour. As we trivandrumites join the other metros, i guess we need to mentally prepare for drills and days like this.

Speaking of Metroes, Trivandrum is trying hard to acquire the status of a metro. From what i have heard, the qualifying factor is the population (to start with). So we are adding many far flung areas as part of the core urban area, to meet the million mark. Reports say we had 750 000 + registered voters in and around Trivandrum, so it could be close.

Consider this though. The estimated potential of employment in Technopark is 100 000 (if Technocity works out). This means that even if we hit the 1 million urban population mark, Technopark will be employing 1 out of every 10 people (of the total populatio!).

Coming back to today’s events – The corollary to this is that all the guys who dont have helmets or licenses, or the proper ‘book and paper’ of their vehicles are worried they might get picked up during the regular checking. Besides if they can’t show ownership of the vehicle, the cops might just decide to throw them into the slammer for a while before they can confirm….

Apparently, according to Michael Porter in Innovation and Competitiveness: Findings on the Netherlands,

Clusters Increase Productivity / Efficiency

Efficient access to specialized inputs, employees, information, institutions, and “public goods” such as training programs and training institutions.

Ease of coordination across firms.

Rapid diffusion of best practices.

Ongoing, visible performance comparisons and strong incentives to improve vs. local rivals.

Clusters Stimulate and Enable Innovations

Better ability to perceive innovation opportunities.

Presence of multiple suppliers and institutions to assist in knowledge creation.

Ease of experimentation given locally available resources.

Clusters Facilitate Commercialization

Opportunities of new companies and new lines of established business are more apparent.

Lower barriers to entry into cluster related business because of available skills, supplies, etc.

The conclusion is competition is fundamentally enhanced by externalities / linkages across firms, industries, and associated institutions.

That is why Silicon Valley has grown that fast and big!

There is also an Entrepreneurial District in Birmingham.

The district is set to be a favorable situation for new business to establish.

It is reasonable if Bandung build Bandung High Tech Valley and Technopark soon. Because they will foster the value creations leading to leverage of prosperity.

I was at work at Technopark when all of a sudden everyone experienced a mild earthquake! I had never

I was at work at Technopark when all of a sudden everyone experienced a mild earthquake! I had never thought that Kerala was earthquake prone, and that too an earthquake in the Technopark area in Trivandrum!! apparently Kerala does have seismic activity in areas like Idukki!

UPDATE: Someone in twitter is saying that the earthquake that hit us in technopark it was richter scale 3.4 . Unsubstantiated. Im off to wikipedia to read this up. Someone else is telling these richter scale points are exponential so there is a big difference between each point.

The odd thing is that i had rented out the bottom of my house (in Trivandrum, but around 12 kms from Technopark) to a couple who had been in San Diego California. And the woman swore yesterday that she felt tremors! And we dismissed it (perhaps the sheer boringness of Trivandrum got to them – apparently they were lured by the laid back lifestyle at Technopark!) . But turns out she was right! In San Diego they have mild shocks every few days and people are used to it.

Another interesting thing is that of all the comments in different blogs, most people use their town name, or their specific area of living like “I experienced the earthquake at Pattom” etc but for us ‘Technopark’ians we mention our company name or the name of our building. This kind of shows a different psyche. We define the space around us in a way different from normal people. Our company, our building and then everything else!

Technopark comments on the Trivandrum Earthquake also include a lot of humourous (or not!) flak for the project managers et al. Apparently some stoic project managers and team leads have asked the teams to meet the ‘dead’ line before they leave today

Another thing – i expect flat prices around Technopark to come down quick! SFS and co are going to have some emergency meetings to dispel any rumours. Particularly since they were banking heavily on the boom near Technopark. And we are soon going to see some advertisements about ’safety features’ of the upcoming buildings. Its about high time we focussed on building safety too. This might be as good a time as any, and those who invest in building safety should deserve the publicity. One of the first links i got when searching for ‘Technopark Earthquake’ was an entry about the new leela buildings earthquake safety norms! (Leela has set up a 400 000 + floor space building in Technopark, near the Nila building. Ironically Nila is one of the oldest buildings in Technopark.)

Its not like we are minting money in Technopark – its pretty hard work (well atleast most of the time : ) ) So the construction folks better start spending some of our ‘flat booking’ money into making their buildings a bit more safer in case a stronger earthquake hits us in the future.

As soon as everyone started to feel the Earthquake, the phone lines started to get jammed and i get the feeling that the internet lines clogged up a bit. Maybe it just my connection. Or maybe WordPress doing some updates.

Twitter seems to be the fastest of the lot in covering the news. Within 5 minutes there were pages of comments covering the event. I checked Orkut and Facebook but no movement(even though quite a few Technopark folks have active profiles – though many companies in technopark block these social networks at work) . Neither the Gmail chat symbols. The Technopark oriented websites made some updates after taking a bit of time. Maybe the adminstrators are having a drink at the local Technopark watering hole B6.

Being into online marketing myself, was curious to see how quickly google picks up the different postings (including mine) and they didn’t let me down – it was up in just a few minutes. Not bad. Infact someone’s already picked up content from my posting and plastered it over their own blog site Thats not bad – updates, plagarism, and what not – in just minutes.

Speaking of B6 , the rumour in Technopark was that they were the only people who didnt know about the earthquake at technopark. They just thought it was a stiff drink shaking them up!!

For those living under rocks – B6 is the only ‘Bar’ within crawlable distance of Technopark. Its the lifeline of Technopark and might even get some venture capital from Technoparkies, if it ever threatened to shut down. But thats unlikely because half of the Technopark salaries go straight and quick into the drains right there!)

Anyway thank god everyone is safe. I heard there were mild earthquakes after-shocks in Pattom, Nalachira etc from the comments on the other blogs.

Hope there is no damage to the big dams like Mullaperiyar etc due to the earthquake. Right now the news we have is that its the Trivandrum district that experienced the quakes.

Need to check up the Manorama, Mathrubhumi and Kaumadi channels to see which one picks up the news quickest.

Another pleasant/unpleasant shock is how quickly technoparkians recover from this kind of potential crisis. Everyone is playing around and cracking jokes. Wonder if the IT ‘crisis management’ culture has made us a bit too fatalistic or downright ‘come-as-it-may’ in our attitude. Anything short of the Dollar dropping in value equivalent to the Rupee, is not going to fluster us Technopark folks (that would be an Earthquake of historic proportions if it even happened). On the other hand, worrying is not going to help.

I was shell shocked!!! How is it possible? They were so much in love, got married inspite of the differences in caste and it’s been only a few years since they started their journey together… How can God be so unjust? Why didn’t he foresee the tears flowing down her cheeks like a river? She was so inconsolable and in grief that nobody dared to bring up his name in her presence. He died out of heart attack few days back and he was only 30!!! I remember seeing him once when he came to office to pick her up after her work. They looked so happy together and very much in love… But, now he is no more, what is left is only the ashes and memories he has left behind… While I was working in Technopark, I heard many such incidents where young men in their prime passed away due to heart attacks, mostly men working in IT companies. They all led posh lives and had all the money in the world for their world trips and hi-fi lifestyle. Many of them spent most of their time at their workstations and were like guests in their own homes… Work stress is the major villain behind most of these untimely deaths. It’s high time you realized there’s more to life than money. Money can’t buy you happiness, love or peace or the joy of seeing your baby crooning and flashing her captivating smile which will light up your world for sure… It is sad many of the youth are after the rat race of making money and leading a peppy lifestyle than enjoying the little things in life which mean the most and gives the greatest happiness. My heart felt condolensces, my dear friend. May the good Lord give you the strength to carry on!

She was a bright girl, very chirpy and got on well with amost everyone at office. She started off in a junior position at the PR dept. and went on to become the HR manager – thought this title was not given to her- in 4 years time. When I heard this, I was quite surprised because she did not have a degree in Management, let alone the experience for it! People had many stories, but I couldn’t believe it coz from my experience and interactions with her, she didn’t come across as that type… But sadly a blog was started in her name to malign her, this was what instigated my anger. No matter what the reason or spite you have towards a person, nobody has the rights to use somebody else’s identity to take out their nasty revenge! Be man enough or woman enough to confront problems rather than resorting to such cheap tricks!!

http://www.techgoss.com/Story/1719S14-Technopark-arrest-theory.aspx

Technopark company ex-CEO arrested for harassment
By Shalini Singh

UK-based Alamy claims to hold the largest and most comprehensive online collection of commercial photography in the world. Established in 1999, Alamy pioneered the concept of an unedited collection and sells images taken by thousands of photographers and photo agencies. Its ex-CEO operating from Technopark, Kerala had left in a hurry and in unclear circumstances.

The Board and senior management in UK have never given a proper explanation to the Alamy workers at Technopark as to why the CEO, Anil Thricovil, suddenly stopped attending office.

Earlier, Techgoss had reported exclusively that Anil has been ‘let go’ because a person in the Alamy HR Department had leveled allegations of harassment against him. After techgoss ran the article, an unidentified person posing as an Alamy employee emailed me saying Anil Thricovil has no differences with the HR Department. Techgoss doubled checked with the person from the HR Department who flatly denied sending the email. The email sent to techgoss was a fake and designed to stop our investigation.

Now, Anil Thricovil has been arrested by the Trivandrum Police. The police arrested him in the evening of July 27 for harassing a woman employee of a company in Technopark through phone and emails. Anil, who is a resident of a posh colony in the city, has no full time job since his exit from Alamy. A police team lead by the Circle Inspector of the Museum Police Station in the city raided his house at 830 pm; arrested Anil and confiscated his computer. Anil had been calling the woman from the city for three months. According to the police, Emails sent by him were traced to Net cafes near General Hospital and Engineering College. The Hitech Cyber Crime cell had traced the phone calls and e-mails.

Tetapi kenapa harus Tangerang? Apa itu bukan ikut-ikutan saja? Anda mau cari sensasi? Mungkin itu bisa ada dibenak anda semua.

Kalau saya ditanya kenapa mengide-kan Tangerang sebagai kota saiber, tentu saja saya juga belum punya banyak ide. Makanya di sini mari kita diskusikan.

Sederhana saja.

Dan-seterusnya. So, tunggu apa lagi.

^ Concept Layout of the Vizhinjam Transshipment Terminal

After a long gap, I am back with a bunch of updates from the Capital of God’s Own Country. June and July were hectic months on the development scene in Trivandrum as a slew of projects were announced or kicked off.

For more information, read on!…

Two of the most important projects in Kerala’s history – the Vizhinjam Deepwater Container Transshipment Terminal and the Technocity – passed major developmental milestones, marking these few months as a turning point for Trivandrum and indeed, the whole of Kerala.

The tender to develop the Rs 8000 Crore Vizhinjam International Deep-sea Container Transshipment Terminal was awarded to a consortium led by the Lanco Group, which also includes Malaysian port operator Pembinaan Berzhai. The deepest port in India, with a natural draft of 18 m and an eventual one of 24 m, is slated to handle upto 6.5 million TEUs in the coming years. The winning consortium outbid a strong field of major international and national players to secure the project. Vizhinjam has already received clearances from the Defence and Foreign Ministries and awaits Environmental and Home Ministry green flags. Construction is expected to start in 2009 and the first phase will be operational in 2011 or 2012. IBS Group, a blue chip IT Company in Technopark, has inked an agreement with Tokyo international Air Cargo Terminal (TIACT) for the implementation of iCargo a new-generation Cargo Management System developed by IBS. President and CEO, of TIACT, Terutake Kato, opined that IBS was selected for their far-reaching experience and competence in the airline cargo industry.

The new cargo terminal of Tokyo international (Haneda airport) will be the first airport in the world to have the iCargo’s CTO module. This system would be used to manage the ground handling and warehousing of all cargo handled by the airport. The new cargo terminal spread over a staggering 170,000 sq. m would ensure the maximum optimization of the available site area.

In addition, this software module would greatly improve the quality of service levels and productivity. iCargo would be managing the cargo business of the leading carriers of Japan including Nippon Cargo Airlines and All Nippon Airways. This deal has indeed thrown open the doors of the prospective global market with Japan clearly emerging as one of the principal markets for the global air cargo business.

IBS Group is also going places in the domestic aviation sector. It has already been enlisted by the Airports Authority of India as the IT solution provider for the 30-odd airports expected to be modernized shortly. IT industry has always been the backbone of industrial Kerala, providing jobs to thousands of qualified hands apart from attracting the much desired foreign exchange.

Close on the heels of the tall talk by the CPM leaders about the drastic changes in the industrial environment in the State and the significant growth anticipated in the IT sector, the State IT Department and the IT companies at Technopark here are fast moving on a collision course.

According to sources, the CEOs in the Technopark here have been sharing a general feeling that they are no more welcome to the State Government.

Unlike in the past, Technopark authorities and the companies housed at the Park now find no way to settle the differences between them. Neither are the Park Centre authorities and the IT Department able to take up the issue in the right forum, nor have the companies an idea about whom to consult to settle the issues that warrant political will and policy intervention.

The collapsing relations between the IT companies on side and the State IT Department and the Park Centre on the other were in evidence at the recently-held KeralaIT.Com. Majority of the companies at the Park opted to keep out of the unprofessionally-organised IT exhibition.

Adding insult to injury, the IT Department and the Technopark authorities have declined to pay back the advance given by three companies in the Park for rented space in the newly-built block – ‘Thejaswini’. The three companies (two of them are the leading companies in their respective domains and had set up their facilities during the initial days of the Park) had paid three months’ rent in advance to the Park Centre.

However, owing to various reasons, these companies decided not to occupy the built up space allotted to them in Tejaswini. The Park Centre authorities, after consulting the IT Department, informed the companies that the advance given by them could not be refunded. There is no change in their stand, even after the Technopark authorities rented out the same space to some other companies.

Meanwhile, another vexed issue regarding the payment of building tax of Technopark buildings to the Corporation is yet to be sorted out. As a result of the efforts taken by a CPM councillor in the City Corporation, the Technopark authorities were asked to pay the building tax arrears since 2000. Under some false notion, the Technopark authorities were not paying building tax. However, when the Corporation sent notice, the IT Department instructed the Park Centre authorities to pay the arrears on their own and collect the same from the companies later.

Following the instruction, Technopark paid around Rs 1.75 crore to the Corporation. But when the Park Centre wanted the companies to pay the building tax arrears, the companies responded in the negative. According to them, the building tax payment is the responsibility of the lessor and lessee need not bother about the same. The Park Centre should have incorporated the building tax in the rent, they said.

According to sources, the Infopark in Kochi has been collecting the building tax from the companies by incorporating the same in the rent.

Without exploring the possibility for an amicable settlement of the issue, the IT Department decided to go by the legal advice. As per the legal advice, Technopark can claim the building tax arrears from the companies. Though the term Building Tax was not written explicitly in the lease agreement, the companies can be made liable for the same.

Moving a step ahead, the IT Department has now told the companies that if they did not pay the building tax arrears, disciplinary steps would be initiated against the companies and their lease wouldn’t be extended.

Though the companies had approached Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, the result was a routine reply along the lines of ‘the matter will be looked into.’
