By Katie Shushtari The British are marching in and with them they’re bringing Ted Baker, Hotel Choco

By Katie Shushtari

The British are marching in and with them they’re bringing Ted Baker, Hotel Chocolat and Ben Sherman. Jonathan Adler joins the Newbury newbies as well, adding a flair all his own.

In the past month, the Boston fashion scene has been talking about several international, fashion conscious stores that have found new homes on the city’s upscale street.

“Newbury Street is the international college kids Mecca, which is why I think that this British invasion will be a perfect match for Boston,” said NECN’s Style Boston producer, Desi Gonzalez.

The stores, of course, sell products, but also sell an attitude not normally seen on Newbury Street.

“It’s really exciting,” said Alex Hall, editor of Fashion Boston. Magazine, “Newbury Street hasn’t seen these kind of globally minded stores in a long time.”

Ted Baker, whose motto is “no ordinary design label,” prides himself on advertising through word of mouth, as apposed to ads in newspapers, magazines and television. On opening day, the store handed out 1,000 pairs of “Boston Ted Sox.”

Inside, the store on Newbury Street is inspired by a “Mad Hatter’s Tea Party” theme, including checkerboard floors and green hedges shaped as teapots, evoking a truly British experience. Although, Hall describes Baker as a “tad less bold and forward thinking.”

Hotel Chocolat opened its first U.S. stores on Newbury Street and in the Chestnut Hill Mall. According to its website, the U.K. brand is committed to a “combination of authentic, premium ingredients with plenty of imagination and flair.”

Though the store took over a year-and-a-half to open, Ben Sherman has hit Newbury Street with a bang.

“The store is incredibly cool,” said Assistant Store Manager Sam Tiews. “It’s a prototype store which means it is one of a kind.”

Inside of the new Ben Sherman calls to mind a classic British mansion, Tiews explained, with fireplaces, sconces, and hard wood floors. Teapots, mopeds, and punching bags are mounted elegantly on the walls and above the fireplaces.

“I think Ben Sherman has the most fashion moxie and cred, and has an esthetic that’s very indefinable,” Hall said. “The quality of the clothes and the beautiful, well-tailored shirts are just wonderful.”

Gonzalez said she believes that Sherman has the most avant-garde style. “Ben Sherman’s sleek designs cater to the fashion conscious students around back bay,” she said.

We’re most famous for its Oxford button down shirt, a staple in almost everyone’s wardrobe, Tiews explained. “Arty Sugarman, the founder of Ben Sherman and wild guy, embodies the kind of anti-cool style that we’re famous for,” she said.

Jonathan Adler, whose philosophy is “Happy Chic,” may be from New York instead of Britain but he has also got a new address on Newbury Street.

“I know Jonathan Adler is a New York-based store and not British, but he has a flair that cannot be defined by a country,” Gonzalez said.

Hall agreed, adding a little hometown pride. “Jonathan Adler is an excellent score for Newbury Street.”

“We chose to come to Newbury Street because it’s a high traffic area, with lots of tourists and fashion conscious people,” said store manager Adam Verboys.

Jonathan Adler’s designs involve intensely bright colors and bold prints, Verboys explained. “We wanted to bring to Boston a happy environment and fun elements of design,” he said.

Gonzalez and Hall both said they believe all four stores will do quite well in the Boston fashion atmosphere.

“We might be in recession here in the U.S but these international students come from wealthy backgrounds and love to hang and spend their parents money around Boston’s most fashionable shopping district,” Gonzalez said.

Check out the locations of all four stores!

No doubt inspired by Guy Ritchie’s forthcoming Sherlock Holmes movie, fashion has gone distinctly detective for the Autumn, with many notable homages to the ultimate in London sartorial iconography.

Whilst the big man himself was said to be the inspiration for D&G’s Spring 2010 collection, the designers largely put a feminine spin on Baker-Street-chic – more Victorian wench than dapper gent.

I’ve always been into plimsols however i tend to destroy them in about 3 weeks so this time i decided to spend some extra bucks and get some quality plimsolls. Anyway i was looking at Ted Baker when i was in Dublin and I absolutely loved the new line of plimsolls. Most of them had coloured soles which i thought was really cool, and overall the design is simple which is exactly what I like.Although i loved the Ted Bakers i ended up buying some Fred Perry tipped cuff orange/blackplimsols (pictured below).

Well my first week has gone well – no new purchases and some right old billy bargains.

The thing is, I’m NOT a fashionable person, I never have been. I’ve never been obsessed with fashion apart from fashion photography (I pour over magazines like Vogue etc. – I never buy them – just in the doctors surgery! ha ha) I find fashion to be an art that I cannot be part of – I have an awkward body (small boobs, bloaty belly, big hips and thighs) and I’m not pretty in the slightest – however – I love looking at well thought out fashion. I’m fascinated by people who rock an individual look and can carry off crazy styles – and as I get older – and less bothered about what people think of me – I’m more confident in wearing what I want to wear. So I’ve started taking risks with my clothes and hopefully as time goes on I’ll get more confident.

So … here are my finds from mooching around Lewisham Charity Shops this week on my lunch breaks … firstly my books:

The first four were from the Red Cross shop – they sell 2 for 1 – and these books just jumped out at me. I love horror – and I am fascinated about the history of horror – I even taught the history of horror at school to Post-16 – so the books on horror and vampires were perfect for me. The other two were more political/ cultural books – I’m always up for reading books that critiscise the Right in the USA – and I really liked No Logo – so again – they jumped out at me.

The other two I’d looked at a couple of times in the Cancer Research shop – I’m interested in China – so that was an obvious one. The Savage Garden just looked intriguing.

Enough of books – let’s look at clothes ha ha:

Birdies from French Connection

I fell in love with the design on this. Not only is it red and black (my favourite combination) but the pattern went all the way round So I picked this up for £3.50. Not bad I thought especially as it’s French Connection:

Price

However I’m not going to keep it like this. I really don’t like wearing the standard ‘t-shirt’ style. Usually my band tees etc. get hacked up. However I don’t want to ‘hack’ this one, so I’m going to try and turn it into a halter top somehow. I’ll post photos when I’m done.

Frumpy Cardi from M&S

This cardi may look a tad frumpy, it IS afterall an M&S one I LOVE this and have been wearing it to death. It’s so toasty, soft and gorgeous. Looks lovely with a short dress and is so cute. I think it cost me £4.50 from British Red Cross.

Greenwich Market bags

I’ve been after some red handbags for a while and I found these last week on Greenwich Market – they were 2 for £5 – and both were used. The one of the right is ridiculously large, with so many pockets for me to fill. So it’s definitely a day wear bag for holding all my daily crap. The one on the left is just so lovely, but a pain to get into when it’s held over your shoulder

So that was my weeks shopping – can you see a theme? As you can possibly tell, I AM obsessed with black and red. Both colours suit me because I have such pale skin, black hair and dark brown eyes.

Today, I went to Deptford, a vibrant part of South-East London just a short bus ride from my home. I spend a lot of time there as I photograph at The Albany and love the vibe (man). However, I do really love to go there to shop. They have a market with too many uber bargains on it, however under my new rules I have to avoid that market (except for food and flowers). So I go to the two charity shops (Sense and Salvation Army) as well as the second hand clothes shop – whose name has escaped me for now. There’s also the infamous Deptford Junk Market. It really is a ‘get in and dig’ market which puts a lot of people off. There is only so much I can dig around there – but dig I did today:

Polstar the Pest top

I found this on the market. There is a clothing stall there that is literally a jumble sale (but not Jumble Sale prices!) – and I’ve found a couple of really lovely skirts there before. This I HAD to have (of course) – it’s made by George (a clothing line from Asda – the UK’s Walmart) which isn’t too great but it’s second hand so I’m allowed it

As I walked into Sense, the first charity shop I come across, look what I found on the book stand as soon as I walked in:

MY SEARCH IS OVER!

YES! If you read my last post you’ll know that this was the book I’ve been after and there it was. £1.20 – thank you very much I really hope that it’s as good as her other one. Anyway – my search is over, so now I need to set myself a new challenge! ha ha.

BOOTS!

I’m becoming obsessed with boots lately – mainly because I’ve never really been able to afford decent boots, and then I realised that I could get them second-hand! These ones were … wait for it … £4!!!! FOUR POUNDS! They’ve hardly been worn and they’re from Wallis, so they’re at least a decent make.

Side view

They’re pretty high for me – I don’t do stilettos really – however I thought I’d give these a go. The funny thing was that a girl was trying on another pair of boots in the shop and she kept looking over at me. Later on, I saw her in the Salvation Army shop and she came up to me asking if I’d bought the boots and did they fit me! I thought she was going to wrestle me to the ground for them – but she didn’t. Thankfully. I don’t like to get in fights – especially about boots She then consoled herself with buying jeans made of about 6 different versions of denim – I wasn’t going to take them off her!

So that was Sense – I went on to the Salvation Army shop after that. I’d never been in there before (although I’m a regular at the one in Catford) and it was definitely worth it. Everything is SO godamned cheap it’s really quite worrying:

Jaeger Loveliness

So this was my ‘high risk’ item – a Jaeger jumper. It’s not really the kind of style I wear however, I thought I’d give it a go this winter and see if I can pull it off. If not, I’m sure I can give it back to a charity shop. It cost me ALL of £2.49 – so really not an expensive risk!

I also bought myself a sweater for work – not very exciting but again – £2.49 -cheaper than Primark where I used to buy my work clothes! (although I do wonder if this is indeed a Primark top!)

And finally, my BEST bargain of the day, and it wasn’t for me, and I don’t have a photo of it because I forgot. I managed to buy my (much thinner) friend what looked like an almost unworn Ted Baker skirt for £2.49. Honestly, it was so gorgeous, with beautiful detail on the back and a lovely greeny/grey colour. She loved it when I took it round – I must grab a photo of it when I next go round as it truly is a bargain and a half!

Most of my retail experience in New York was spent, whether inadvertently or … advertently?

Most of my retail experience in New York was spent, whether inadvertently or … advertently? … browsing the sale side of the clothing rack. My entire haul at Uniqlo, for example, cost less than $80, and that included a pair of corduroy jeans and a merino wool sweater.

But I was also very conscious of what I had deprived myself – the items I had automatically put down because they were full price, the sections (or entire stores! – I’m talking about you, Paul Smith and Marc Jacobs) that I dared not enter lest I fall in love with a new arrival.

I found myself wandering around Soho, discouragedly ruminating on the road not taken, the Clothing Not Purchased. Suddenly it seemed like a waste to be in the shopping capital of the world and not seriously entertaining the notion of buying something amazing. Wasn’t I missing the opportunity of a lifetime?

So I was in a rather fragile state when I went into Ted Baker.
A quick jump back in time: On my first trip to Las Vegas, I found the most amazing pair of pants at the Ted Baker store at The Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace. They’re gray windowpane plaid, accented by minuscule lines of orchid and muted ultramarine that you wouldn’t notice unless I paired the pants with a matching shirt. People have asked me about them while I’ve been in line for bagels, shopping in stores, even on the street in New York. (I wore them with a black button-down for my incredibly expensive yet business-casual dinner.)

I love everything about those pants, and thus I am perhaps unduly fond of the Ted Baker line. It’s sort of like when I went on a date once at the now-closed Sol y Sombra – because it was an amazing date, for a long time I couldn’t think of that restaurant as anything but incredible. (Even though after a few too many returns, I realized all I really loved was that one-night experience [and the Chorizo Pinxo tapas].)

So I went in expecting to find a whole store of Ted Baker Trouser Love (dirty!), and true to form started out on the clearance racks. And despite what appeared to be half the store on clearance, I wasn’t having much luck. Any luck. So I expanded my search from “only things I love” to “things I think are OK, and fit.” Most of them were shirts and sweaters, but dammit, I wanted another pair of amazing pants.

I think I’d read one too many articles about how when you buy something great and wear it a lot the “cost per wearing” drops, and somewhere else there was a piece about how a garment’s value doesn’t necessarily equate with the cost … So when I finally found an amazing-enough pair of pants, I no longer cared that they were full price. I had had enough of depriving myself, dammit! I deserved something that wasn’t discount!

So I trotted them up to the counter with a (sale) shirt. While the sales associate rang it up I marveled at his neatly trimmed mustache and perfect, floppy hanks of forelocks. (He reminded me of one of the members of Army of Lovers [the one on the left here], only in an impeccable suit, and without the eyeliner, and I was completely in envy of his 24-year-old hairline.) Anyway, I signed the slip and had everything shipped home. The box arrived promptly – the same day as the Aedes box – and Mr. Brooks stood in the kitchen as I opened it.

“Wow,” he said. “Those are nice pants.”

Yes! Validation.

“Did they charge you for shipping?”

“Yeah, but since they were being shipped out of state, they didn’t charge me sales tax. So that saved …” I looked at the packing receipt.

“I SPENT A HUNDRED AND NINETY DOLLARS ON PANTS?!” I said to nobody in particular. (Actually, I said it to myself, in disbelief.) “A single pair of pants?”

In my zonked-out state that day — I was hungry, I was soggy, I was getting desperate – I hadn’t peeked at the price tag. Just signed the display screen and never looked back … until my day of retail reckoning.

“They’re really nice pants,” Mr. Brooks said, trying to calm me down. “You’ll probably have them for a long time. In fact, if you factor out how much they cost over how many years you’ll have them–”

“Don’t try that,” I said. “I taught you that.”

They are beautiful, though. (Mine are the silver ones.)

So, the the world’s largest American Apparel store has finally opened it’s doors in the mitts of a recession ridden Dublin.
Never before had I been inside Dov Charney’s doors and this past friday I did for the first time. “Tacky”, that’s the first word that came to my mind, and still does. It’s all bright lights and metallic surfaces, very much reminding me of the that dump that is River Island. I pressed on though, up to the mens section, where I spent some time furrowing through the rainbow of colours. I was pleasantly surprised by the prices, with most t-shirts and jumpers modestly priced. I did find the jeans a tad over-priced though, considering what you were paying for. I ended up leaving with a few pieces alright – it would’ve been rude not to – and happy with what I had seen, considering all the hype I had heard about the largest clothing manufacturer in the United States.

Just yesterday I spent the afternoon shopping and after making the mandatory visits to Ted Baker and All Saints, I once again made my way to this new haven for shoppers. I was greeted with same tacky lights, the same bright lights and an unbelievable amount of colour. This time I spent some more time looking at the women’s section. “Neon” that’s what I came away with. I hate neon.
Again I made my way up to the mens area. I realised that I was wrong the first day, I didn’t much like it. Everything is so similar, it seemed to me that to their way to create more stock, was just to make many versions of the same garment, but just in different colours. To me everything just seemed cheap and of no real quality. Yes they do colours, but i didn’t see too much originality, or something that would stand the test of time. I will happily say though, that I could easily pick a up a few bits here and there to compliment other things I have in the future.

I plan to come to back to this post in a few months time to see where I then stand about American Apparel, but for now give me the likes of All Saints or Ted Baker to wear.

Aubade swimwear

Bikini swimwear and Swimsuits

The terms bikini-swimwear, bathing suit, monokini, bikini, swimsuit, swimming costume and bathing suit relate to clothing that is designed for the swimming pool or for lazing on a beach, swimming in the sea or for playing water sports.

Swimsuits are often made with an inner lining to prevent the water from making the swimsuit transparent. Swimwear comes in many styles and the latest revolution has come from Miraclesuit swimwear, an American company, which uses a modern fabric which is said to make a woman look up to ten pounds lighter instantly.

· One-piece swimsuit

The one piece swimsuit which is also known as Maillot in French is a form of swimwear that comes in one piece and covers the hip area, the tummy and the breasts and usually has straps going over the shoulders. The one-piece swimsuit is normally very figure hugging and flattering for women and is often the preferred bathing costume for professional swimmers in the swimming pool.

Until bikinis were introduced almost all swimsuits were in one piece with various styles such as the halterneck swimsuit, the surplice (which is a form of wrap-around style) and the bandeau swimsuit style (described below). The standard one-piece swimsuit has two straps and a scooped neck or sometimes a plunge effect which shows more of the boobs. Other styles will have a very deeply plunging back to show off just a little bit more.

· Halter neck and boy short leg swimwear

Some one-piece swimsuits come with halter neck where the straps tie around the neck and attach to the front of the swimsuit leaving more of the back exposed. This is a very sexy style that gives great support to your bust. A style that has reintroduced, having a very 30’s feel to it, is the boy leg one-piece which looks like a classic one-piece with a boy short type leg.

· Surplice swim top

The surplice one-piece has a sophisticated feel to it, almost like a toga, with a diagonal wrap over piece of fabric which is great for hiding a slight tummy. Some women who are looking for maternity swimwear will go for the Swim Dress which has a summer dress fitted feel to it and looks ever so sweet whether you are pregnant or not.

· Bandeau swimwear

The Bandeau style of swimwear is very stylish and very French. A strapless bathing suit with pleats and some have straps or halters for added support and security.

· Bikini

The bikini, or bikini swimwear or two-piece swimsuit as it is sometimes known, is much more revealing than the one-piece swimsuit and is often preferred by younger women. One piece covers the boobs while the other covers the bum and pelvic area.

The bikini was a form of swimwear which had its origins in Greco-Roman times. Floor mosaics from the period of the Emperor Diocletian (286-305 AD) in the Villa Romana del Casale, Sicily show women in bikini like clothes. The ‘Bikini Girls’, as they have become to be known, are shown exercising in garments that to the modern viewer are in fact, bikinis.

However, the modern bikini swimwear was invented by a French engineer named Louis Réard in 1946. The bikini outraged many people when it first began appearing on French beaches in 1947. Réard had named his style of swimwear after Bikini Atoll in the Pacific which was the site of the nuclear weapon test in mid 1946. Réard believed that the burst of excitement created by the bikini would be like a nuclear device, and he wasn’t far wrong. After the introduction Réard‘s business became highly successful. In advertisements Réard kept the mystique of the bikini alive by claiming that a two-piece suit wasn’t a true bikini ‘unless it could be pulled through a wedding ring.’

The bikini is said to be the most popular women’s beachwear worldwide. According to Olivier Saillard, the French fashion historian, who said it is due to “the power of women, and not the power of fashion” saying further that, “The emancipation of swimwear has always been linked to the emancipation of women.”
