Well, I figured I’d share with you guys the collection of crochet I’ve been working on of late. These are my latest designs specifically for the toddler/preschool sized head. I’m putting together a collection of items to go in a local gift store and I have a custom order with some special considerations, so it was good timing for the two right now. These are all created from some of the softest fibers I’ve worked with and with the exception of one hat in this collection so far, out of fibers that are no longer available. The bows you see are not permanently attached to the hats yet, just in case my customers do not want a bow, with the exception of the orange hat, which I have already permanently secured. It has a blend made with a very unusual fiber that happens to be the softest of the bunch. The glass globe you see is the perfect size to display these.

Hopefully these designs will be just the thing for each of my customers!

Happy 1st Anniversary Ana & Clement! Semoga cinta kali kokoh dan abadi seperti gunung es di NZ hehehe

Found objects from the Gower coastline. The tiny Teddy Bear with his red hat was washed up on Rhossili beach – see the picture below for how he looked when I found him. He now lives comfortably dry in the bowl shaped remains of a metal fishing float that I picked up on Whiteford Sands – “La Coquille” is embossed on the outer surface. The corrosion gives a rough weathered textural surface to the float; and inside there is a series of radiating ribs that make an interesting pattern. I used the piece of bright blue and yellow discarded fishing rope to carry the float home.

Do you ever wonder what it’s all about? Well, as the unemployment rate in NYC reaches 17%, I certainly do. I’m a Harvard Business School graduate without a job. And I’ve graduated Harvard not once, but twice! With fifteen years of work experience. You can relate. Now that I think of it, I’ve spent most of my life “searching”. For the right job. And for the right guy. But somehow my picket fence remains my 500 square foot studio on East 72nd Street Have you noticed that interviews and dating are pretty similar experiences? So, let me tell you about myself. I’m Jane, and I’m currently lying in my bed on the upper east side of Manhattan with my teddy bear, Solace. And multiple Hershey bar wrappers. Where does one go from here?

Most recently, I worked for an internet marketing start-up in NYC. Starting last January, business took a nose-dive as a result of the recession. During the summer, we couldn’t generate any new business. Nervous marketing managers slashed budgets. “Spend” became the new “four letter” word. Two weeks before my birthday last October, I’m handed my “pink slip”. Happy Birthday Jane!

I gathered my shoes, photos, and mouse pad before my computer unceremoniously goes black. Looking back, I saw it coming. But I wasn’t prepared. Now an outsider, I embark on a new journey. To figure “It” out. Life is a puzzle.

I must ask you, “Is your pink slip showing?”

Look!

Someone new has arrived!

The long awaited and expected friend…

He wasn’t even patient enough to wait until the lights were adjusted properly.

He was so eager to make his first photo shoot and let you see him that he’d literally jumped in front of my camera.

Though he got shy from time to time he was mostly very brave!

We’d finally settled with this pose.

He’s wearing his scarf and the Finnish-style cap in a very fancy manner here.

I love him so much but he still keeps his name a secret…

What do you think his name could be?

my first suck uk crush came via the wood clock. i couldn’t rationalize the price tag so i bought some $25 *less-than* version, which flashes time + date with no option to sit still. the cheap knock off left me pretty unsatisfied.

Be creative! Use your Imagination! These are phrases that children hear over and over as they are encouraged to use their abilities in a creative way. Imagination prepares children for the adult world by letting them role play situations which may occur later in life, learn to solve problems in a creative manner and develop their own personality through playing out different activities in their imaginary world.

Teddy Bear Gifts are a great way to encourage their imaginations. One of the roles that we often see play acted with Teddy Bears is that of a parent. The child will take care of their Teddy Bear by dressing it, giving it hugs, and even putting it to sleep at night. Having clothes and accessories for your Teddy Bear Gift gives greater possibilities for creativity.

We have to realize in today’s world, many children do not have parents free to be with them all of the time. They often rely on their Teddy Bears and Stuffed Animals as substitutes and will pretend to talk to them about their problems. Often children will go to their rooms and hug their Teddy Bear and tell them all of the things that are on their mind. This provides comfort as well as learning independence to handle the problems around them.

As children use their imagination, they automatically develop their own self image. When you see a child go off by himself and dream, they are choosing things that interest them and are within their abilities. When using their imagination they can create a haven of their own wherever they are – from within. Children have the ability to find that peace we are looking for throughout life by escaping with their imagination.

Teddy Bear Gifts often help develop their imagination as children can learn to care for them gently, take them for rides with them, and hug them tightly as they drift off to sleep. When they are troubled, Teddy is a great person to listen to problems without interruption. And their Teddy Bear goes with them as they walk in their parade or climb to their treehouse so they can explore many ideas of who or what they might like to become.

Sometimes, if you are lucky, your child or a youngster may ask you to join in his creative games. If they invite you to join them, share their creative experience and enjoy. Use Your Imagination!

The Indian forests have changed a lot from the life and times of Mowgli and the irony couldn’t have been starker. In what seems a modern adaptation of the famed Jungle Book, this tale of a female sloth bear is more heart wrenching than the movies featuring such storylines for this still awaits a happy ending.

Rama Singh Munda (member of the indigenous tribe) from Ruitisila village in Orissa’s Keonjhar district, about 225km from state capital Bhubaneswar, gave shelter to female sloth bear Rani when she followed him home and was 2-3 days old. The bear would have met a certain death at the hands of predators had she not followed Rama. The family christened her as ‘Rani’ and she was the loved new member of the family. The family which was bereaving the loss of Rama’s wife discovered a reason to smile. The 5 year old daughter of Rama, Dulki found a companion to play with. The family used to share their meals with Rani, Rama even used to take her for joyrides on cycle and all through the time they never used new her for any commercial purposes nor did they caused any harm to the furry animal. However the euphoria of the girl and bear was short-lived as the news reached media circles and the officers took away the bear (only on second attempt as Rani had escaped to forest during the first raid. However the bear returned to her only home later in the day where they darted her and took her to the zoo) Rama was held captive in the jail for breaching the law and keeping a sloth bear at home.

It can only happen in factual realms that an innocent tribal who has been keeping the bear for over a year with affection and care was arrested and put behind bars. We have heard time and again about the pitiful state of zoos in India, the conditions at Nandankanan Zoo are no better. How judicious a decision it was on the part of officials to send Rama to jail and Rani to an unkempt cage? Solomon would be deranged in heavens.

The man is now set free but then who cares about the family…the feelings of the bear who found herself in a cage without her family? The court of law, the animal activists, the NGOs must see at affairs from an animal’s viewpoint too. What good are animal laws if they fail to serve the animals?

Motherless Dulki never knew any Archies teddy bear, for her only buddy was her furry friend with animation.
Dear Bear I empathize with you…fiction lore of Rudyard Kipling was better than the realism.

G and I arrived in Israel last Friday. His family here greeted us with a warm welcome…at least I think it was warm. Although they speak English, G’s family, along with most Israelis I have met so far prefer to speak in their native tongue. After asking the requisite questions about our trip over and other pleasantries in English, the conversation reverted back to Hebrew. Exhausted after a 10-hour flight, I was content to sit back and listen to the foreign conversation.

Then it happened. I was sitting quietly on the couch, overwhelmed by the conversations around me when in front of me a teddy bear appeared. Behind it was G’s cousin Gal, with a curious smile on her face. That was the moment when I realized that even if I were unable to eloquently converse with the adult family members, I would still have to speak Hebrew. I wanted to throw the bear across the room, knowing that ignoring the invitation to play with a 5 year old would cement my position as the silent guest in the room. As long as I stayed on the couch, I was protected from verbal communication. Determined not to be a terrible person who ignores innocent children, I took the bear and began my study of Hebrew.

I was nervous at first, but then I realized that Gal could be the perfect friend. I am a woman whose knowledge of Hebrew stops at “dog”, “cat”, and “watermelon”. Hebrew is her first language and, due to the fact that she’s just 5 years old, speaks clearly and simply. After realizing that I don’t speak Hebrew, she said to me, “I will teach you” (in Hebrew of course), took my hand and brought me upstairs to color.

Children, naturally, are non-judgmental but after making her teddy bear moonwalk Friday evening, I was past the point of being embarrassed and embraced my new learning experience. Over the weekend I not only expanded my vocabulary to include “ice cream”, “thank you”, “salt”, and “napkin” but I practiced coloring in the lines and made a new friend.

Just trying to decide what to wear for the Teddy Bear Christmas party. All my friends will be there so want to look my best. I have narrowed it down to two choices.

Mrs Santa Claus Found a beautiful red dress that is trimmed in white and it has a red hat with white trim too. I still like to wear dresses especially when I am going to a party. Mrs Santa is a lot like me and wants to make everyone happy as she makes gifts and cookies for the holidays.

Angel Another possibility is to be an angel. That’s what Christmas is all about! There is a pretty white dress that even has wings that I could wear. It has a nice gold belt which matches the halo that I could wear on my head. Angels always spread a little kindness wherever they go so that would be a good choice for me too.

Will have to make the decision before long. Or maybe I will get lucky and get invited to a couple of parties so I can wear them both! How will you dress your Teddy Bear Gift for Christmas this year?

I’ve been really busy putting together all the new stockings for www.santaselves.co.uk, which involved a lot of photos being taken under hot lights with the cats dancing around my feet.

There have been so many projects I wanted to start, but being lazy and generally in pain, I have settled for teddy bear making which is a task that is mind-numbing and also rewarding. A friend recently had a baby so I decided to make her a bear which she can play with when she is older. She is made out of alpaca (which is incredibly soft), with glass eyes which I painted with purple nail varnish and I also played with my new airbrushing kit to add some depth to her ears and face. I also embroidered the baby’s initial on the footpad using perle and rayon floss.

Do you remember Colonel Steve Austin in The Six Million Dollar Man? He was a test pilot that was maimed in a wreck and the government spent $6 million to give him nuclear powered limbs. I think he also had a bionic eye. Science fiction? It was then, just like the communicators in Star Trek were in the late 60’s and now we have cell phones that look a whole lot like the gizmo that Captain Kirk used to say ”Scotty, beam me up.” Since the time of the TV show starring Lee Majors, bionic limbs have become a reality. Butt, you know that we’ve truly moved into the space age because in England, doctor’s gave a man a “bionic bottom.” The poor guy had gotten in a car accident and suffered internal injuries. Apparently, he suffered great muscle loss on his backside and that made it impossible to maintain control. He had been fitted with a colostomy bag, which is a pain in the ass, to say the least. Now, with his bionic backside, all he has to do is flip a switch, just like using a garage door opener. Kinda funny but also amazing, if you think about it.

Original Teddy Bear With a Bow

On This Date in History: President Theodore Roosevelt was an avid outdoorsman. He lived and traveled in the west and also established the national park system when he designated five areas as national parks. He later signed the Antiquities Act of 1906 that allowed he and his successors to claim certain sites, landmarks, prehistoric structures and other items as federal monuments. While he was a great advocate of conservation, he also was an avid hunter. On this date in 1902, he was on a hunting expedition in the Mississippi Delta. Having lived in Greenville, MS for a time, I’m familiar with the area and have seen the historic marker that marks what happened. He was on a bear hunt I guess the locals wanted to make sure that the president bagged some game. Some poor bear got chased by a bunch of hounds. Roosevelt came to find the bear, knocked unconscious and tied to a tree. He was expected to shoot it. He refused.

Here is another version. He was in Mississippi to settle a border dispute and decided to do a little hunting. A bear had killed a hunting dog and it was chased down. The animal was wounded when Roosevelt came upon it and ordered it killed for mercy. Still another story says that a small bear cub was brought to Roosevelt and he refused to kill it. When I lived in Louisiana they claimed that the bear was in that state…that may harken back to the border dispute.

Michtom's Original Teddy Bear in Smithsonian

Whatever…the story made the rounds along with a drawing. I’ve never heard the one about him ordering the mercy killing…I’ve alway heard the one where he let the bear live and the drawing supports that version. Entrepreneurs decided to take advantage. Brooklyn store owners Rose and Morris Michtom asked Roosevelt for permission in using his name for their marketing of a stuffed cute bear. Roosevelt agreed and the Teddy Bear was born. Another version of the story is that Margarette Steiff in Germany made a cute bear that was an instant international hit.

Here’s the bottom line. The Teddy Bear was inspired by some story about the 26th President of the United States and a bear. Between 1903 and 1911, millions were sold and the classic tradition continues to this day.

Weather Bottom Line: First off, the bottom line is that we should be fine on Sunday and Monday with highs still pleasant each afternoon toward 70. Then come the question marks. I’ve seen the official forecast and it calls for the best rain chances on Tuesday. But, that seems at odds with the model runs as both the GFS and NAM look pretty similar. A couple of days ago I talked about a big fat low getting cut off in the Southern Plains. Well, that is still indicated by both models and both have this guy lurk around Missouri for a couple of days as another shortwave behind it comes along and keeps it from moving too much. It then lifts almost due north and then the next guy comes through the Ohio Valley by the end of the week. The second feature looks more formidable as far as we are concerned given its track. The NAM throws out about 2/3 of an inch of rain and the GFS something more like 1/5 of an inch; both advertise the rain though from Tuesday evening through Wednesday, which is at odd with the official forecast. I kinda like that scenario. It seems to me that the cut off guy will be held up and a slow poke in response to the next one behind it. Either way, Sunday and Monday look very nice.

This past September I had the privilege of an invitation of a friend to experience a wonderful vacation in rural Maine. I met Burt and Mary Ann for the first time at their summer home. They were so gracious to me. We went to the coast, walked on the rocks, saw the ocean, I picked sweet juicy apples and blackberries. Mary Ann cooked the most amazing meals. Lobster and fresh corn on the cob were on the menu with fresh picked blueberries in a pie and a cobbler.

I asked Burt to tell me Mary Ann’s favorite color. He said it is red.

Later Mary Ann mentioned that her favorite color is blue. She is an avid quilter and I happened to notice a beautiful quilt on their bed that had a lot of red and blue in it. This is the bear I made for Mary Ann

Burt is a master carpenter, I don’t think there is anything he can’t build. Check out his website www.baldwingypsycaravan.com
