Emily Wells is a multi-talented, Los Angeles based violinist who released an album, Mama, back in April that received generally positive feedback, Wells’ music is pleasant enough, but not really in the vein of tunage that we feature at The Astral Plane. Earlier this week though, Wells posted Mama Remixed to her Soundcloud and I’ll be damned, but it might just have one of the most impressive producer lineups of any release you’ll listen to all year. Salva, Jeremiah Jae, Baths, Teen Daze, Dan The Automator and more contribute, but Kid Koala steals the show with is mellow, noise-leaning take on “Passenger”. Apparently, Ms. Jones is working on an album and has a few songs to check out on SoundCloud. Something about Lillian reminds me of Fiona Apple, except Ms. Jones has a wild streak. Great indie pop sound drives this track. Peep the video below.

Woodpecker Woolliams is “a one-woman experimentalist blending folk, drone, noise and found-sounds.” She dabbles with harp on this track, which is consistent with her theme of generating “stories of birds, murder and madness.” It’s not exactly terrifying, but the long ago tension I experienced while watching Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” has suddenly resurfaced. I think I’d like hanging out with these guys. This video has a weird fight club vibe to it. Lots o’ costume changes…hence, the name plumage. Oh, and this album kicks ass. I had a laugh the other day when the kid on Sirius XM pronounced the band name as MEE-KNOW-MEE-NAH. Seriously, I am not evil.

Thus:Owls – “White Nights”

Stunning video and song. A beautiful indie folk tune that does a good job of orchestrating piano and what sounds like a full string session.

This track is from his newest album “The Inner Mansions,” which is set to be released on November 6, as most of the rest of the album is steeped in Teen Daze’s trademark atmospheric wonder, and flows along with subtle pace.

Teen Daze has also recently released his second album of the year (the guy is prolific). It’s called The Inner Mansions and this is  standout track Spirit, a sprawling 6 minutes that bares some resemblance to the ‘dance music with a heart’ of Four Tet and Gold Panda.

Teen Daze has released another song of of his sophomore LP, The Inner Mansions. This is getting me quite excited for the album, which you can preorder from Lefse Records, who will be releasing it on November 6. Enjoy.

So I somehow missed/forgot that these first 2 tracks came out & was only reminded by the recently released song. New Life, Union (which features Frankie Rose) & Garden 2 are all songs from Teen Daze‘s upcoming album. Angel Olsen is a folk singer and a frequent collaborator with Will Oldham and if this track of drama and heartache, Tiniest Seed, from her new album Half Way Home is anything to go by it is going to be well worth tracking down.

Released on 24th September on Song, By Toad Records, Dull Spark is the second single from melancholy folk experimentalists Meursault’s excellent album Something For The Weakened. This is a touch more upbeat, a touch more distorted, and a touch more gruff.

Wiry garage punks The Coathangers have a new split single with Heavy Cream, and Merry Go Round from it should add substantially to their growing number of fans.

Of course they don’t contact us they just make the allegation anonymously and get us a warning from box.net that we can do nothing about. Kaki King also has a new release, Glow, due imminently. The taut straining acoustics of Great Round Burn is the first taste.

And finally a new one from the marvellous Lord Huron following on from the superb Time To Run comes Brother. It is another reason to look forward to the forthcoming album Lonesome Dreams.

Way back in February of this year, we featured a new Teen Daze track called “Brooklyn Summer” that was the lead single from the album All of Us, Together, which was released towards the end of May via Lefse Records.  The album was a fantastic interweaving of electronic beats but ultimately left me wanting a bit more of the style from his Beach Dreams EP with the incorporation of vocals into the tracks.  While Teen Daze is certainly always atmospheric in the best way, the extra layer of fuzzy vocals he has featured from time to time brings an added element and meaning to his songs.  Thankfully, I might not have to wait long for my wish as I apparently forgot that Teen Daze is the Ty Segall of the electronic indie scene and never stops releasing new music.

Two days ago, “Union” was released along with the details for his second full-length album of the year, The Inner Mansions, which will hit the shelves on 11-6-12.  And to my great surprise and joy, he enlisted the stellar vocal services of Frankie Rose for the track.  The song itself is fantastic, with the two singing on top of each other to create an interesting blend of voice to put effects to.  Beginning with a chaotic clamor of sound, it eventually settles out into a melodic, lush, pool of tranquility to sink into.  Dive in and give it a listen below.

Oh man. Almost two years (whoa that feels weird) since Teen Daze laid down his Beach Dreams EP and, with the grand exception of Two Bicycles, his guitar [or at least guitar driven music].  Lovers of the aforementioned EP will unconsciously, and silently fistpump when they click play below; those who haven’t listened to it will have the unique opportunity to hear a different side of the electronic juggernaut for the first time. Shouts to Frankie Rose for the vocal additions. New LP The Inner Mansions out on Nov. 6th.

Teen Daze

New Life

Vancouver’s Teen Daze, hunched over a laptop and mixer, played a pretty mellow but somewhat dancey set with thumping beats. There was a small crowd gathered at the front of the stage to watch him, some bopping around to the music. They were pretty attentive, with the exception of the very loud and obnoxious couple standing in front of me. It was a pretty good set, but way too short.

At this point, I grabbed my first beer of the night, an Allagash White and waited for the next band, White Arrows to go on.

White Arrows, who come from L.A., played indie rock with some electronics thrown in and reminded me a bit of The Strokes. At one point, they did a really cool cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire”. I had never heard of these guys until this show and ended up really liking them.

Time to order another beer, which was unknown due to 1, tasting different than the Allagash I had asked for, and 2, the change given back was different than the first time. Either way, it wasn’t very good and I wish I knew what it was so that it can never be ordered again.

The last band of the night was Beat Connection, who are from my beloved Seattle. At this point, there was a pretty good sized crowd and they seemed really into the band. Beat Connection played a set of electro pop with a bit of a tropical feel and everyone seemed to be feeling it. I don’t think that there was a single person standing still.

Overall it was a fun night of dance music that progressively built up as the night went on. I was happy have been able to meet Teen Daze who was not only an incredibly nice guy, but very appreciative and his new CD “All Of Us, Together” is really good! Props to all of the bands for making themselves available at their merch tables as well. I would highly recommend seeing any of these bands if you get the chance. You won’t regret it!

Singling out two excellent tracks originally by Giraffage to highlight today. The first – “Slo”-  comes straight off the full length album Comfort and is just a standout. Listen to it here:

I feel like I always have to destroy the magic when I write sentences like these: Giraffage is really Charlie Yin mixing out of San Francisco, read more about him here.

He’s also done a lovely, glitchy track called “Even Though” featuring xxyyxx AND it’s been remixed by Teen Daze (cc: Kitsuné Maison). It’s a more urban, grounded take on all of those artists, you could almost take it to the dance floor (see two minutes in).

Am I the only one who feels Teen Daze is almost better at re-working other artists’ tracks than putting out their own?
