Last week, KT excitedly started talking about shopping on Black Friday.  I merely groaned and hoped that she would forget about it.  My hopes were dashed to the ground when I realized that she had talked both her grandmother and her sister into going out before the crack of dawn to fight the crowds for some great “deals”.  I had no choice but to go. 

For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why she wanted to go so badly.  The last time we had gone shopping the day after Thanksgiving, we ended up frustrated with the crowds and the lack of any real deals.I knew from past experience that Mimi would insist on going and then refuse to climb out of bed when it became a reality and grandma…well…she’s  just up for going shopping anytime. I knew that this Black Friday shopping excursion was all  KT’s doing…I had to get to the bottom of it!   So, I finally asked KT exactly where and more importantly, why she wanted to go.

That’s when she told me that the only place she really wanted to go was Half Price Books.  They were selling everything for 20% off and were giving out free tote bags to the first 100 shoppers and each bag had a $5 gift certificate in it.  One lucky shopper would find a $100 gift certificate!When Shaun heard where KT wanted to go, he asked if he could go too.  I, of course, readily agreed and asked if I could just stay home and sleep in a bit.  (After all, I had worked for hours and hours and hours and ho…ok, maybe I’m getting a little carried away  here…on Thanksgiving Dinner and needed the sleep)\

I half woke up in the wee hours of the morning as my two favorite nerds got ready to set off for the bookstore.  I fully woke up a couple hours later when they arrived back home eager to show me their loot.

I’m starting to thing this whole Black Friday thing might not be so bad after all.  Now if only I could get them to bring me back a latte and a fresh bagel…

While always accurate, Sexual Intelligence is nevertheless often critical, snide, and cranky. In a world full of sexual ignorance, bizarre impulses, and fear-based, wacky public policy, we roll our digital eyes here a lot.

This Thanksgiving holiday let’s take a break. Today let’s give thanks for some of what’s wonderful in the world of sex.

* Sex toys

Sex toys are humanity’s answer to the question “just how long can someone move their hand in the same direction at the same speed without getting bored or injured?”

Marshall McLuhan would be proud: just as the telephone is an extension of the voice, and the car an extension of the foot, sex toys are an extension of the hand. And of the penis, vulva, and mouth, as the case may be.

There’s little recession in this industry; even if your 401k is now a 201k, you can still buzz or probe yourself happy.

Toys are mainstream now, as even Amazon.com carries dozens of them—from the “Pink Fantasy G-Spot Magic Wand Vibrator Dildo” to the “Smartballs Kegel Exerciser” to the “Horny Girl Next Door Realistic Pussy Male Masturbator.” Every person and couple should have a bunch.

* Contraception

Most adults love little [choose one or more:] (munchkins) (rugrats) (screaming bundles of scary impulses). But there’s a limit to how many of these weapons of mass destruction one wants to love. I suggest the number of hands a person has is a good clue to the number of children one should parent in a lifetime.

Enter Captain Contracept! There are styles for everyone: hormonal, mechanical, vegetarian, you name it. And for gentlemen who have finished the quest for biological immortality, science has a special gift for you: vasectomy. It only takes an hour, then you get the weekend off, then back to work. You’re wise to hold off ejaculating for a week, and then you’re shooting blanks for the next half-century. Yes cowboy, you still shoot—wet, warm, voluminous loads of blanks.

The only people who can honestly condemn birth control as “unnatural interference in God’s order” are those who shun other modern comforts like electricity and gossip. But even the Amish have begun taking advantage of contraceptive wisdom.

* Pornography

I’ve been in countries where pornography is simply illegal. You don’t want to live there.

Trust me, you’d rather live in a country where people are free to make their own entertainment choices, even if you find them baffling or repulsive (American Idol, anyone?).

Pornography paid to build the internet. Pornography made The Sopranos, David Mamet, and The Daily Show possible. Pornography is the sexual outlet for a lot of lonely people who are not going to meet Mr. Good Enough or Ms. Right for a long time. Or ever.

Pornography has many, many, many, many faults (is that enough acknowledgment?). It is also one of the few places you can get an honest look at America’s subconscious. And what you find there is simply human: childish curiosity, adolescent yearning, adult confusion, an overwhelming interest in sexual body parts, fluids, power dynamics, and yes, feelings. Healthy human sexuality has a noble, wholesome, loving side.

That same healthy human sexuality has a dark, aggressive side. Pornography shows it all, complete with big smiles, happy orgasms, pretend coercion, lame music, and stupid dialogue (“ooh, is that for me?!). But pornography doesn’t show anything that isn’t common human fantasy.

I’ve counseled patients who felt deep, deep shame for watching pornography. I’ve also counseled terrified or enraged patients who believe that their partner’s watching porn is infidelity, rejection, or perversion. You don’t want to live like that.

* Lubricants

Spit will only get you so far.

So a special salute here to lube—the magic stuff that makes sex more comfortable for people of all ages and persuasions.

I still have patients who resist using it, saying they don’t “need” it, as if it’s some medicine for losers. No. To the extent that sex is about friction, lube helps you custom-design the friction. The slippery stuff in lube helps turn the geekiest guy into Fred Astaire, the clumsiest woman into Ginger Rogers.

If you don’t know who they are, the second thing you should do is sign up for Netflix. The first thing you should do is get some lube.

* Female Sexual Desire

Plenty of Americans remember the days when Good Girls Didn’t Say Yes.

Unfortunately, even today, many women across the globe can’t say yes even if they want to. Single women in Muslim countries; patriotic women in war-time Vietnam; African women struggling with clitoridectomy—these women have learned bitter lessons about an enthusiastic yes.

The great uber-gift of legitimizing female sexual desire is the way it allows sexuality to be a form of intimacy between two people. When female sexual desire is considered abnormal or slutty or threatening to her partner, she has to hide it or her (male) partner needs to control it. This is the case around the world, where men pursue and women submit or dissemble.

When two people can acknowledge and celebrate a woman’s sexual interest, they can be themselves and connect physically. She doesn’t have to manipulate her partner or spend her life unable to speak for herself.

A great accomplishment of modern America is that we have established a moral code that isn’t based primarily on the number of sex partners a woman has, or when she has them. Women are now free to be unethical independent of their sexuality—by bribery, say, or theft or child neglect. Yes, judging women on their public behavior rather than their private sexual choices is a big advance in civilization.

* * *

Finally, let’s enjoy today by taking the perspective that all those erotophobic activities we hate—laws and customs limiting sexual expression, narratives of sexual danger, efforts to trivialize sexual knowledge—are essentially compliments to those working for a world of sexual justice and responsible erotic expression.

If those forces of fear, hatred, and sexual denial weren’t afraid of the continuing and inevitable success of our work creating a sexually progressive world, they wouldn’t be fighting us so hard.

Oh, I give thanks for one more thing: for all my readers, who encourage me with email, suggestions for articles, financial contributions and book purchases. Your affection and support are very, very important to me. On more nights than you might imagine, you make the difference between me working and me…well, me not working.

GOSSIP ATTACKS

The old saying “Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words will never hurt you”  never took into account how badly we can hurt on the inside when vicious things are said about us. while it is true that such words don’t leave anu permanents physical scars, it is up to us to make sure that they don’t leave any permanent psycological scars either.

Here are some things that you can do to make sure that your heart stays clean through it all:

Forgive. Before you do anything else,clear your heart before God and forgive those who have spoken wickedly about you. The Bible tells us repeatedly that unforgiveness does us more harm than the person hurts us.

Don’t feed the fire. Proverbs 26:20 NLT TELL US, Fire  goes out for lack of fuel, and quarrels disappear when gossip stops. Don’t counterattack. If people don’t see you publicy lash back or overreact, then it often kills the fun of gossiping about you and it will stop. As much as you can, don’t fuel their gossiping with more things to say about you.

Talk it out face-to-face. As the old saying goes, “Honesty is the best policy.” If you have been hurt by someone, then go speak with them one-on-one and tell them how what they said hurt you. Let them know that you have forgiven them. If they still are spitful, then it is no longer your problem. You have done what you and they need to deal with their own problems. But more often you will win back a friend.

Gossip can be like a time bomb (Yow!) If you ignore it or pretend like it isn’t there, it will eventually explode; but if you defuse it, it can harmlessly be thrown away.

Choose to defuse, not explode.

So much of the time, articles about LGBTQ youth and suicide seem to imply that it is just inevitable.  Thanks to Sam Jones at Out and About Newspaper for discussing ways to lower this risk amongst our young people: Good role models.

From Out and About Newspaper:

Each year, suicide claims more lives of Tennesseans than homicide, and the GLBT community is at high risk.

Scott Ridgway, executive director of the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network, said the key to lowering that risk may lie in providing positive role models and a sense of belonging to people who are rejected for identifying as LGBT or questioning.

As the holiday season approaches, phone calls to suicide hotlines reach their peak.

“Suicide crisis line calls increase in the holiday season, and we see the numbers of suicides increase in the spring,” Ridgway said.

GLBT youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers, according to the Massachusetts 2006 Youth Risk Survey. Ridway said that survey represents a nationwide trend.

Another study, done by the 2007 San Francisco State University Chavez Center Institute, shows that GLBT and questioning youth who come from a rejecting family are up to nine times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers.

So from time to time, I look back at my bloggy beginnings, and I’m a bit in awe of the way things have taken shape over the last couple of years.  I wish I had a saved screenshot of Topsy-Techie in it’s humble first months…it would be a hoot to do a before & after shot here!

But I also occasionally look back to my goals for what I wanted to accomplish with my blog.  I happened to think a wanna-be techie mom, raising two geeklings – - one a techie-genius and the other a techie-addict – - was somewhat hilarious, and I hoped other people might find it to be so as well.  And then, of course, I wanted to share all the fun ways I had found to integrate technology into our day-to-day homeschool lives.

In some ways, I’ve really stuck to those original ideals.  My Friday’s Hardwired Homeschool Hints series, for instance, has been a way to share my favorite educational technology for homeschoolers on a weekly basis.  But in terms of other content, I’m usually all over the map.  Maybe that’s not a bad thing…it might possibly get REALLY boring to regale you with the tales of Uber’s latest programming conquests.

But today, I’m heading back to my roots.  Gonna fill you in on a little of the true geekiness that’s been going on around here in T-T land.

• Uber loves coffee.  He loves coffee shops even more.  Our town has its fair share of ones to choose from, and several are within walking distance of our house. So, Uber starts out many of his mornings by walking to a local coffee shop and chilling.  This morning when I asked him what he did while sipping his java, he matter-of-factly explained that he was working through some hexadecimal problems and figuring out how they could apply in real-life situations.  He then told me he had given the barista there his email in case she needed some tech support.  I didn’t bat an eye at any of this.
• H-T loves video games.  You would think I mean that he loves to play them, but trust me – - that is a secondary interest.  His first love is watching videos ABOUT video games online.  Ratings, reviews, cut scenes, and sometimes people actually just acting out the game as the game characters.  Scary thing is, I’m pretty sure H-T would be making these videos himself if he weren’t so pre-occupied with watching them.  It’s the weirdest pastime I’ve ever heard of.  And he can spend HOURS at it. 

The thing about raising two geeky teens that I find the MOST hilarious, though, is listening to them call each other to their respective rooms:

“Hey Uber!  Com’ere!  You’ve got to see this new video game trailer!!

“Hey H-T!  Com’-ere!  You are going to FLIP when you see this new Linux interface!

I consider myself fairly technologically savvy, and I assure you that this is all greek geek to me.  But I adore it.  It is a unique and unusual way to live…and I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

Ever had the question:  “What would your life be like if you had no parents?” I did and, luckily, I found a book that would answer all those questions with a little bit of fantasy of course.

The book I found was called Gone by Michael Grant and, yes, it is a young adult book – here’s the heads up:

Sam Temple is your ordinary fourteen year old.  He goes to school like everyone else and has a mom whom he gets along with pretty well. In school, Sam doesn’t have many friends – well except Quinn.  He also has a crush on this girl called Astrid (who people call Astrid the genius because everything you don’t know SHE KNOWS).  Anyways, Astrid really isn’t attracted to him though…at least not for now.  And, for Sam, well he’s not very bright – by bright I mean not smart.

One day, Sam is at school and his teacher suddenly disappears – like “poof.”  Everybody notices that every kid in the school who is over fifteen (and yes adults too) just “poof’” and, just to add to their luck,  there’s no internet, no phones, and no TV (well except for DVD’s if you have one)!  Soon, everyone in California and maybe the whole world over fifteen is disappearing.

Some kids find it fun.  They steal, they eat, they play, and well… they don’t really care

Sam does care.

A few days pass, and the teens soon discover that they also are stuck in a dome with no way out  – except if you want to vaporize and electrocute yourself then you found your way.

Hunger begins to strike.  There’s hundreds, maybe even thousands of babies, that can’t walk in their homes without a parent.  The bullies take advantage of bullying others – even killing others – that is until Sam finds out that he has a mystical power that can burn just about anything.

Now does Sam stand up and becomes a hero helping many children…no, no he doesn’t

Then one day, an academy comes from close by making themselves leaders and doing what today we would call a government.  The academy kids  really mess up leaving children as doctors with no experience and also as fire fighters and a mayor who is called Caine leading everyone.  Soon they all start evolving powers fighting, killing disasters occur and Sam finds out a secret he never would have thought his own mother would keep from him…

If you want a book that has action and adventure well this is your book. NAH that sounds to cheesy – I’d rather say hey I am not making you read it it’s your choice you can read it or not…

“The darkness is near…” Gone

I’m not sure I would have understood linear equations better if I had learned math basics in the age of cellphonometry….but learning with a cell phone sure sounds like fun.

Sobra decir que este grupo fue de los más aclamados,sobre todo por los hombres,que al menos pudimos darnos un “taco de ojo” y admirar las coreografías de esta sin igual Banda de Panderos…

Así que felicitaciones a ellas y a sus profesores por su dedicación,y agradecimiento por visitar el D.F. y poder admirarlas…

Carl Hanson reminds teens to be thankful, and I’m grateful I “overheard” him say his piece.

Last night in our study we read Colossians 3:15-17, with the threefold mention of gratitude. (Three mentions in the same paragraph is sermonic!)

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (ESV)

I mentioned three things I was grateful for, that came immediately to mind:

1. The time I had with family in the U.S. while there recently;

2. I’ll tell you this one on Saturday, a Very Important Date for our family;

3. The successful launch of FR, thanks to so many of you.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Well, the site is one of the best places for our teens to visit and learn about sex.  Being educated is far better than believing in magic.

If you haven’t noticed, believing in magic is what lead to the war in Iraq and the practice of torture, in the name of God which magically makes it moral….so they seem to think.
