I don’t seem to be able to write a review for Tegan & Sara’s Sainthood. What could I

I don’t seem to be able to write a review for Tegan & Sara’s Sainthood. What could I possibly say about it? I could say that I was bothered by it even before I received it because I ended up paying a lot of money for it (in the limited edition with three books). I could also say that I got annoyed by everyone talking about the songs before I had ever heard them, that I got even more frustrated when people told me that they were bummed out because they couldn’t talk about the album with me before I had it. And I could say that I was disappointed by it when I first heard it.

But then, I could also say that it is a so-called grower, that I liked it better with each listen, that I’m impressed in particular with Sara’s musical evolution, with her lyrics, with her voice on Alligator. That my favorite tracks are Alligator, Night Watch, Don’t Rush and Northshore, and that I think The Ocean would sound better if it were a lot slower, and that Someday sounds like an MGMT song.

The On, In, At bookset and the Sainthood CD. Everyone should own them!

But I’d rather tell you that I’m not very upset anymore about having spent all that money, because the three books of the limited edition are very good and very well done, with textile covers (made in China) and many big photographs and interesting texts, a mostly cool design by ee storey and others. Of all the overpriced articles I’ve bought in my life, this might easily be the best.

I do want to question their marketing strategy, however. They gave people who ordered Sainthood through iTunes two bonus songs, Wrists and Light Up, and an additional one, It Was Midnight, if they pre-ordered. I suppose rewarding pre-ordering in general is not a bad idea. This way, I imagine, the album sells particularly well in the release week. Plus, you’re rewarding those that actually know or care that you have a new album out. However, this also seems to suggest they had rather you bought the album digitally than to get a real, physical copy of it (which might explain why the CD booklet is a little boring compared with that of The Con). I don’t have an iTunes account or any Apple gadgets for that matter, and since the only other way to get these songs seems to be an illegal download, I’m not particularly pleased.

Far and Wide by Rachael Cantu. Devil's Thunder alone is already worth it.

So in that regard, I hope for their next album, they’ll take their friend Rachael Cantu as an example, who just yesterday started selling her new CD Far and Wide (that Tegan Quin contributed vocals to, by the way, and which has overachiever Ted Gowans doing “keyboards, guitar, mandolin, synth, rhodes, slide gtr” [source]). You can download it, or buy it as a physical copy – but buying a physical copy also gives you the digital download for free – even in FLAC format! Plus, you can buy it without using Pay Pal, which is also really great. (This doesn’t currently work if you live outside the U.S., but she assured me they’re working on fixing that.) You can get that CD at Bandcamp.

All in all I can say that Sainthood, however controversial it may be among many of their fans, is another step forward for Tegan & Sara, and it’s well worth getting. And don’t forget to get yourself the song Sheets, either!

I got a few extra hours to waste, really way more than I should but I couldn’t help it. >.< lalala, So what did I do?..I changed, put some clothes on. I feel like sharing some thoughts with you while I’m at it…Sometimes, just sometimes, I have this weird feeling, I miss people in my life. Don’t you? Sometimes people that don’t matter at all, or people that are not part of your life anymore, nor are you part of their lives either, at all, anymore. It’s funny. We grow, they grow, things change, we change, but sometimes, just sometimes, we still miss them. Or those moments, maybe. Moments that can never ever be replaced, never be the same, prolly wouldn’t even feel the same if those people were part of it again. Moments forever cherished, moments forever lost. Forever meaningless. I guess I’m just mellow…melancholic even. Don’t you just feel the same, sometimes?…I know I do. <3 Uma

MYCKET TREVLIGT!

Konserten var fantastisk! Flera gånger bättre än förra gången, hade varma känslor överallt i kroppen och eargasm efter eargasm. Sjukt taggad publik och sjukt taggade Tegan and Sara och sjukt bra förband Astronautalis. Mums!

Nu: Plugg och massa clementiner.

This weeks list is compiled of musical duos that are siblings. I realise it would have been easier t

This weeks list is compiled of musical duos that are siblings. I realise it would have been easier to do a post about siblings in music in general but i like the ideas of duos better, the whole “it’s just the two of us” kind of logic.

When brothers/sisters get together and make the choice of recording music together, whether it’s as a duo or as part of a band, there’s no telling what noise might end up being produced. It goes either one of two ways, the absolutely dreadful (The Jonas Brothers) or unbelievably good (Boards of Canada).

There are quite a few factors that come in to play when siblings unite musically. First off, do you get along? Do you get along enough to tour without constantly fighting, to make an album without arguing when the next guitar solo should come in and who should be on the front cover. Secondly, tastes. If one of you likes RnB and the other likes Death Metal then forget it. Thats not to say that for siblings to work well musically they have to like the exact same music but like most people starting up bands it helps to at least have some similar tastes. Thirdly, age difference. With the exception of the Jackson 5, if the age difference between band members is pretty big (say 10 or 15 years maybe) then it’s probably not gonna work. So with that we move onto the list..

Family Values
10. The Veronicas – Untouched

And briefly moving away from the subject of sibling duos i’ll give a nod to two of my favourite bands that just happen to include siblings.

VIDEO: Jesus And Mary Chain – Sidewalking

VIDEO: Radiohead – Reckoner

Also worth a mention in the “Siblings That Work Well Musically” category are The Stooges, Kings Of Leon, The Breeders, The Carpenters, The Kinks, Psychedelic Furs, The Misfits, The Black Crowes and sometimes but not all of the time…..Oasis. I have a somewhat love/hate relationship with that band. There are times when i could listen to a full album or two right through and other times when i can’t bear to listen to more than 30 seconds of one of their songs.

Meanwhile there are too many that should be lumped in the “Utter Shit Musical Siblings” category. Way too many to mention but i’ll give dishonourable mentions to The Cheeky Girls, B*Witched, The Darkness, the afore mentioned Jonas Brothers, Spandau Ballet, Bros, The Osmonds, the streak of musical piss that is Hanson and last but not least the latest siblings to jump on the Shit Siblings band wagon….JedFUCKINGWard. Go away please you two annoying quiffed up little bag of bones.

I’ve actually succeeded in bemusing myself as to how i’ve managed to include the names Jedward and Boards of Canada into the same post.

Oh and The Corrs are worth a mention (and a picture) simply because of Andrea Corr. I had a major crush on her in my early teenage years.

I was never a true Tiësto fan but things are changing pretty quickly. I love this new disco-house remix by Avicii. He is able to limit the rawness Tiësto brings to the table just enough to jar in the vocals perfectly. It’s a great backdrop or party filler as the synth just fills whatever mood you need it to. Other gems like this are coming around from Tiësto lately. If you haven’t caught some of the more mainstream collaborations with Tegan & Sara than you should. It’s a bit on the pop side but has its catchy moments.

Tegan and Sara

“Sainthood”

October 2009; Sire Records

By Emily J Ramey

By now you better know that the indie rock duo Tegan and Sara is comprised of Canadian identical twins Tegan and Sara Quin. The eclectically charismatic pair of women has been gathering critical acclaim for their raw and distinctive power pop since the 2004 release of So Jealous and its single “Walking with a Ghost.” However, it was 2007’s The Con and its singles “Back in Your Head” and “The Con” that led to T&S’ international renown and household name status. Ring any bells? Okay, fast forward nearly two years.

Now, with their six full length album Sainthood, Tegan and Sara are demonstrating their staying power in a rapid-moving industry as well as their ability to adapt and develop their music as the women themselves mature as songwriters, performers, and musical icons.

Sainthood is a badass girl rock album with strong, driving percussion, sharp, choppy vocals, and clever, buoyant lyrics. Essentially, Tegan and Sara have recorded an assortment of syrupy love songs turned edgy eighties synth pop by the twins’ tight electronic instrumentation and tensely expressive, angular performance.

Sainthood’s track listing is well-balanced and robust. A few of the can’t-miss songs are “Don’t Rush,” a grungy, distorted tune, simple and distinguishing with its pithy chorus: “One way or another/I’ll find my way to cover/I sing to find my other;” the album’s first single “Hell,” a catchy tour de force with quick wordplay and heavy, upbeat guitar contradicting its darker content; the silky and dynamic tune “The Cure” with its silvery harmonies, mellow flow, and sanguine lines like, “I know the world’s been mean to you/ I’ve got a cure; hold tight./I know the world’s not fair to you/I’ve got a cure for its crimes;” the post-punk-influenced “Northshore,” complete with rebel adolescent lyrics like, “Don’t save me, don’t save me, don’t save me,” and the repeated chorus line, “There’s something so sick about this/My misery’s so addictive;” and the effortless and unpretentious “Alligator,” a sunny tune of love lost.

Tegan and Sara use simplicity and hazy instrumentation to downplay their lyrics, which somehow works in reverse to highlight the duo’s unparalleled ability to speak to the heart of complications in love and other similar stories. The Quin women are irresistible, but to be fair, they did warn us: “Watch/With a bit of friction/I’ll be under your clothes./With a bit of focus/I’ll be under your skin.”

I don’t really blog about reviews but I stumbled upon one days back and I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Tegan and Sara’s sixth studio album – Sainthood - addresses secular themes of devotion, delusion, and exemplary behavior in the pursuit of love and relationships. Inspired by emotional longing and the quiet actions we hope may be noticed by the objects of our affection, Sainthood is about obsession with romantic ideals. In the service of relationships we practice being perfect. We practice our sainthood in the hope that we will be rewarded with adoration. As we are driven to become anything for someone else, we sometimes become martyrs for our cause.Love, like faith, can never be held in an individual’s hands. But the story of a great love affair – especially one that is unrequited or has ended too soon – can be woven like scripture or a bedtime story. And so the themes of Sainthood are tied together by this simple title, borrowed, with great respect, from the lyrics of the Leonard Cohen song ‘Came So Far For Beauty.’

Let me preface this by saying that Tegan and Sara Quin are two of my favorite musicians of all time. But I will say that “Sainthood” is not their best album. It has some really great songs, and perhaps now one of my favorite all-time songs in “Hell” which I was shocked to discover as a free MP3 Daily Deal on Amazon. I have not stopped listening to that song. “Arrow”, “Alligator”, and “The Cure” are my other favorite tracks from this album, and that isn ‘t to say the others aren’t good – they are, but I can say with certainty that musically, while beautifully written lyric-wise, they are not among the better songs they’ve made. Granted, it’s a Tegan and Sara album, so I’m always going to love all the songs, but what could be their major mainstream breakthrough is unfortunately not their best work. I give it a 4/5 for content, 5/5 for being a T&S album, so it’s a final verdict of 4.5/5

Coming soon Rihanna’s “Rated R” – this should be a fun one.

November I’ve always thought was kind of okay. It’s the start of the chilly season, so short days, wrapping up warm and eating big hearty meals by the fire in my fictional country home that lives in my mind, seems all cosy and romantic. Come February you’ll find I have a rather different attitude to the colder season, which is generally one of ‘FUCK THE FUCK OFF!’. But for now, get a woolly jumper on, drink some warm cider and make the most of the insane amount of live music going on right now.

Last week (as an example of November being heavy on the live music) was insanely gigtastic for myself. It went down like this:

Flaming Lips at The Troxy

Tuesday – Flaming Lips at The Troxy: Exuberantly wonderful opening full of balloons and Wayne rolling about on a ball. Slightly less exciting middle section full of those slightly experimental new songs. Great ending. What I believe Flaming Lips are practicing here is the Primacy Recency Theory. My psychology degree was soooo not a waste of time.

Wednesday - Incredible scenes at Oh, Inverted World at the Old Queens Head. It was such a special night, so huge thanks to Player Piano, Mariners Children and Treetop Flyers. Thanks also to Dave Depares for his awesome DJing – the boy has skillz.

Thursday – The Mighty Mighty Biffy Clyro at Brixton Academy: Amazing amazing amazingness.

Friday – Tegan and Sara at Shepherds Bush Empire: Brilliant girly fun.

So all that music was nice. There’s also been a few new tunes rocking my world in these newly chilly days. First is the pretty wonderful Think About Life from Montreal. A cross between Black Kids, TV On The Radio, and, er something very pop. They’re just amazing and I’ve pretty much not stopped playing ‘Havin’ My Baby’ for the past two weeks. They released an album earlier this year called ‘Family’ that I don’t think is available in the UK, but those lucky American and Canadians can purchase away.

Here are two tracks from the new album:

Havin’ My Baby – Think About Life

Johanna – Think About Life

Some time ago a band called Venice Is Sinking from Athens, Georgia contacted us. They were nice enough to send over a copy of their new album ‘Azar’ and it’s actually really great. It’s college orchestral indie-rock, if such a genre exists, and is definitely worth some of your listening time.

Here they are!

oh, and an mp3 too! Man, do we spoil you…
Compass – Venice is Sinking

So that’s it for today. We’ll hopefully have some news for you guys soon about the next Oh, Inverted World night that’s going to come and make your life worth living. We promise it won’t be long.

Okay, so I have to finally say that I am now a fan of the band Tegan and Sara. It’s the kind of music that grows on you the more you listen to it.

Who are they? They are a Canadian indie rock/pop duo consisting of identical twins Tegan Rain Quin and Sara Keirsten Quin (born September 19, 1980). If you haven’t heard of them, take a listen to their music and let me know what you think. Dwell on it a bit as they might be an aquired taste. My favorite song from them at the moment? The Con. I also like Call It Off. Here is the link for the music video for Call It Off by Tegan and Sara:

Another video you might want to check out is by a band called Against Me! and they have done a song with Tegan. The song is called Borne On The FM Waves Of The Heart. Here is the music video for that song:
