25-year-old Vincent Loritam from Tegla Lorupe’s stable in West Pokot district is the new Baringo Half-Marathon champion after emerging the strongest during the fourth edition held on Saturday. Loritam had to wait until the last five kilometres to make a strong attack that enabled him to wither a daring challenge from home boy William Chebon. Loritam, who hopes to make a return to the international scene since being away from 2006, clocked 1:02:06.4 to beat Chebon by 17 seconds. The race, that was flagged off at Kabarntanjo by one of the Baringo members of Parliament Mr Sammy Mwaita and who was flanked by the founder of the event Paul Tergat, saw a group of 10 athletes who ended up taking the top positions battle for 15 kilometres with Chebon controlling the pace. Chebon appeared to gain over the rest briefly soon after crossing the 15km mark but Loritam made a strong attack that scattered the group and by 20km it had been reduced to the a battle between the winner and the runner-up.

The women’s 15km event was won by international marathoner Agnes Kiprop in 50:55 ahead of Joan Ayabei (52:13) and Diana Chepkemoi (53:26). An upcoming athlete Ruth Matebo continued with her exploits by finishing sixth in 53:45. She was third in this year’s Tegla Loroupe Peace Race and eighth at last week’s Wareng Tuskys Cross Country held in Eldoret.

Am Greifenseelauf 2004 hatte Tegla Loroupe als Siegerin des Halbmarathons beim anschliessenden Essen vor 300 Gästen erzählt, dass sie in im Nordwesten von Kenia, eine Schule für Waisenkinder bauen möchte.
Ende Mai 2005 organisierten Lehrer und 330 Kinder der Primarschulen Dozwil und Uttwil sowie der Oberstufe Dozwil-Kesswil-Uttwil einen Sponsorenlauf. Dabei kamen über 21 000 Franken für die Tegla Loroupe Stiftung zusammen. Zwei Drittel des Betrags wurden für den Bau eines Klassenzimmers verwendet, der Rest, um einen Container mit Schulmaterial nach Kenia zu schicken.
Das Projekt «Uferlauf» fand mit dem Eintreffen des gesponserten Schulmaterials bei der Tegla Loroupe Schule in Kenia einen ersten Abschluss. Sie finden diesen Report auf unserer englischen Webseite www.kids-to-kids.com

Sie nahm am Greifensee-Lauf teil und besuchte die Kinder, die sich vor drei Jahren mit einer Sammelaktion der kidstokids Organisation für ihre Peace School in Kapenguria eingesetzt haben. 1998 wurde sie übrigens Halbmarathon-Weltmeisterin in Uster, zehn Jahre später lief sie immer noch auf den hervorragenden siebten Platz. Tegla ist nicht nur eine inspirierende Sportlerin, sondern sie setzt sich auch tatkräftig mit der Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation für den Frieden und die Ausbildung von mittellosen Kindern in Kenia ein. More than half a year ago the Swiss kidstokids organization, part of the International humanitarian help organization “The Oneness-Heart Tears and Smiles” packed a container filled with school supplies donated by various organizations and schools in Switzerland as well as packages that were collected by children from Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic and Finland, for their little Kenyan brothers and sisters. It all started with a run at the Bodensee in Northern Switzerland, where “kidstokids” inspired some school teachers to organize a run with the children and afterwards collect items for the packages. After a long journey and months of waiting in Nairobi they got the needed papers and permissions from the Government and the Custom Authorities and the container was recently brought to the Rhein-Valley Hospital in Kasambara-Nakuru, Kenya. Tomorrow the hospital crew will start unloading the school banks and chairs that will be given to Tegla Loroupe for her Peace School in Kapenguria. Marathon runner and  Peace  Run organizer Tegla came to Switerland several times to promote the cause of the needy people in Kenya. All the crew members are looking forward to this because it is a special day for them. Not every day do they get a container full of goods they normally only dream of. Tegla Loroupe is one of the most gifted marathon runners. She is not only active in sports but also makes big steps towards peace with her Peace Races in Kenya, and as UN Ambassador of Sport. She recently worked together with Kofi Annan for a peaceful solution in the Kenyan Government. I had the privilege to meet and interview her in Switzerland where she ran a half-marathon and participated in the World Harmony Run.
