TEKKEN THE MOVIE – Official Japanese Movie Poster

Based on the long running and highly successful Namco video game franchise of the same name, TEKKEN is a high-octane, action packed thriller written for the screen by Alan McElroy (Spawn, The Marine) and to be directed by Dwight Little (Anacondas, Murder at 1600) with fight choreography tentatively by Dion Lam (Spider-Man 2, Doom, Red Cliff).

Set in 2039, the film promises non-stop high flying action as the greatest fighters from around the world come to compete in the last and greatest sporting event of all time, the Fist Tournament. After World Wars destroy much of civilization as we know it, the remaining territories are no longer run by governments, but by corporations the mightiest of which is Tekken. In order to keep the masses down, Tekken sponsors the Iron Fist Tournament in which fighters compete to the death for ultimate glory and receive a lifetime of stardom and wealth.

We are introduced to this violent world through the eyes of Jin Kazama, a street fighter that enters the tournament in order to avenge the death of his mother that he blames upon Tekken’s powerful and controlling Chairman, Heihachi Mishima. He knows that the only way to get close enough to Mishima to kill him is to win the tournament. With the help of Lucas, an ageing Iron Fist Champion and fight trainer, Jin makes his way through the tournament, but in doing so, he begins to uncover his own past and inner demons as well as exposing a dark underbelly to Tekken that threatens the very existence of humanity. With futuristic and imaginative sets, a compelling story, and fight sequences combining fighting styles from all over the world. TEKKEN is in line to become one of the greatest action films of all time.

I reminded a friend about a video game movie that sucks. And now I’m reminded of it too…

I reminded a friend about a video game movie that sucks.

And now I’m reminded of it too…haha.

I found the trailer again. Here it is, prepare to dig your eyes out in horror:

For those unfamiliar with the KOF series, here are some of the character profiles and how they look like:

Mai Shiranui

Kyo Kusanagi

Iori Yagami

Rugal Bernstein

Terry Bogard

Mature Picture | Profile

Vice

My ranting starts here:

1. Kyo Kusanagi doesn’t use a katana to fight!!

2. Why are all the hair styles and costumes so different from the KOF characters?

3. They don’t look anything like the KOF characters! >.<

4. Terry and Rugal in the movie are not blonde, which they are supposed to be.

5. Rugal in the movie…looks…so weak and flickable. Game character Rugal can kick his ass and send him flying to oblivion!

6. Why is the movie plot based on science-fiction instead of one of KOF plotlines? KOF is not in another time-dimension..argh

7. Kyo Kusanagi is not a super hero…no one in KOF is a super hero. They are just characters with super powers that fight…they are not super heroes. Period.

And…I could go on and on forever…so I’ll cut to my conclusion now.

Low budget movies, Hollywood and video games franchises don’t mix well. This movie will just be another addition of mangled and butchered anime/video game names to this years horrible Legend of Chun Li and Dragonball Evolution. My advice to the producers of such movies -> Change the name of the movie completely and don’t ride on the video game name. Your movie will have less expectations to live up to, and it may really be considered as a not-so-bad/decent movie.

Time will only tell if the Tekken movie will be doomed like KOF and the rest…but for now, it seems that the casting are much better than the rest of its video game movie predecessors:

I’ll wait till I see the official trailer and the I’ll make final judgment of whether it sinks or swims. :/

From VideoGamesBlogger.com The latest fighting game to be turned into a movie is The King of Fighter

From VideoGamesBlogger.com

The latest fighting game to be turned into a movie is The King of Fighters which is set for release sometime in 2010.

Other upcoming game movies based on fighting games include Tekken and the Street Fighter-based movie Street

Maggie Q

Fighter: The legend of Chun-Li (starring Kristen Kruek aka Lana Lane from Smallville as Chun-Li) and the already released Dead or Alive film.

The King of Fighters flick will see the franchise getting a science fiction angle (something not found in the games, at least to my knowledge) as revealed in this quote from the MovieSet:

It also looks like the King of Fighters movie will introduce a new science fiction spin into the setting established in the games’ universe by following the surviving members of three legendary fighting clans who are continually whisked away to other dimensions by an evil power. As the fighters enter each new world they battle that universe’s native defenders, while the force that brought them seeks to find a way to invade and infect our world. Hmm, doesn’t seem very faithful to the games to me, eh.

Naturally the game is based on the long-running “The King of Fighters” franchise of fighting games by SNK Playmore. A series which is on it’s 12th core entry with The King of Fighters XII and has spawned a whopping 13 spin-off games. To put that into perspective, the Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter franchises are still in single digits (Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe is the 8th MK game while Street Fighter is on it’s fourth CORE entry with Street Fighter IV, even though there’s been tons of spin-offs and re-releases).

The King of Fighters movie began filming in Vancouver, Canada on November 27th. It’s being directed by Gordon

Bernice Liu

Chan, a dynamic Hong-Kong-born director who is known for films like Fist of legend, Beast Cop and Jackie Chan’s 2003 flick The Medallion. The screenplay is by newcomer Rita Augustine.

As far as actors are concerned, The King of Fighters will star Maggie Q (Live Free and Die Hard), Sean Faris (Never Back Down), Will Yun Lee (Elektra), Francoise Yip (Aliens vs. Predator – Requiem), Monique Ganderton (Supernatural) and Ray Park, best known for his portrayal as Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Producing the movie will be Joseph Chou (Appleseed: Ex Machina), Tim Kwok (Wicked City) and Bobby Sheng. The picture is being jointly financed by Japanese production and rights management group Micott & Basara and Australian-U.S. sales agent Arclight/Easternlight.

My brother recently bought his own PSP. Now there are two PSPs in the house, the other being my cousin’s.

2 PSPs means less scarcity. More supply and less demand means i get to use the PSPs as well. And since im bumming most of the time this christmas break, I am cathcing up where i left my all-time favorite character since Tekken 3, Ling Xiayou.

Though I am still having problems with Xiayou’s aerial combos i am doing pretty well with the character and am improving (though my brother’s Lily is no match for me, he is too good).

Speaking of which, Tekken Movie is said to be released sometime this year which is really somehting to look forward to considering it’s very interesting characters.

Chiaki Kuriyama, who played the girl with chains in Kill Bill 2, will be playing Xiayou. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0411951/ check this link to IMDB for more info about who’s gonna play who in the movie.

Dwight Little (Anaconda, Prison Break).

Even more Tekken movie details are trickling in through the web! Popular movie news site IESB.net reports some of the audition sides for the upcoming Tekken movie project. It goes in detail on some of the story details as well as character backgrounds. Let’s hope this doesn’t end up joining the ranks of DOA: Dead or Alive, as we all know, good videogame movies are few and far between.
IESB.net reports:

TEKKEN Movie Details!
Written by Stephanie Sanchez
Friday, 02 November 2007

The IESB has gotten their hands on the audition sides from the upcoming live action flick TEKKEN based on the popular video game of the same name (which has TEKKEN 6 coming to the USA sometime in 2008).

Audition “sides” just use certain scenes in the script, usually emotionally charged ones, to see how the actors would react in that situation. We’ve gone through them all and have some character descriptions for ya plus a few details of the story.

Characters first –

JIN – Hero supreme with a serious drug problem, he’s hooked on ZEN and does what he can to get his next fix. He has entered the tournament in order to get near MISHIMA to kill him. He finds out along the way that he is the son of KAZUYA and grandson of MISHIMA. He is the people’s favorite to win KING OF THE IRON FIST. Suffering from ZEN withdrawals and sweating profusely, he enters the arena to try out for the latest IRON FIST tournament, his opponent? MARSHALL LAW. *See KAZUYA’s details for more on his lineage.

BONNER – The scene used for the sides for the character of BONNER is actually our first introduction to the character. It’s about 10 minutes into the film and we find BONNER in his chop shop working on some underground black market kind of stuff listening to an “old” Black Eyed Peas song “Pump It” and singing along. A knock at the door rattles BONNER and his crew and they quickly cover up what they are working on. Luckily, it’s just BONNER’s acquaintance JIN at the door with his latest run of illegal goods. He hands over the microprocessors and gets a fix of ZEN (via inhaler) in exchange. Clearly a ZEN junkie, JIN asks for more but BONNER doesn’t give it out for free. JIN offers to take part in the “fights” later that evening in order to make some extra dough for BONNER so he will give him more ZEN.

BRYAN FURY – Tekken’s favorite cyborg is a part of the live action TEKKEN film. BRYAN FURY of the ONYX CORPORATION. We meet him as we should, flexing his muscles for all the world to see. With his muscles rippling, veins protruding and sweat beading, FURY is more machine than man. His skeletal structure was replaced by flexsteel. He is being blackmailed (sorta) by head villain Kazuya. Not sure for what, but Kazuya knows Bryan’s secret. Did I mention it’s illegal to have more that 30% of bodily enhancements in Iron Fist? FURY sports his famous eye to chin scar.

MISHIMA – Head of TEKKEN Corporation that has taken over the world pretty much after the last big war. He sees TEKKEN as the saving grace of the human race, things were in complete disarray before the corporation stepped in and brought order to the world. He believes he is remaking the world. Of course, with great power comes great responsibility and it looks like TEKKEN CORP has gone overboard outlawing all sorts of things in the “best interest” of the people. And what’s a big world dominating power without a big “cage match” to find the ultimate fighter? IRON FIST is TEKKEN’s version. The KING of the IRON FIST is the best fighter in town. MISHIMA doesn’t seem as “bad” as he did in the video game. He may even have a change of heart about TEKKEN thanks to JIN.

KAZUYA – MISHIMA’s son who thinks his father is weak and he should be in control. Has waited for the torch to be passed down for a long time and is getting pretty frustrated with his father. Considering we find MISHIMA is the detention center later in the story with JIN going to him for help to escape, it looks like KAZUYA is the one who put him there and is now in power. He is also the one who raped JIN’s mom resulting in his birth.

MARSHALL LAW – Remember the guy at the end of OVER THE TOP? The final arm wrestling opponent for Stallone? Well, maybe not many of you do, but that’s SO this guy, MARSHALL LAW, he’s the bad ass scary IRON FIST opponent that JIN fights to qualify. He breaks bones, wills and has a tendency to throw his opponents, well, at least what’s left of his opponents. He demands respect from JIN, but JIN is the one who gets the respect instead.

STEVE FOX – Former IRON FIST competitor turned IRON FIST ANNOUNCER. Give him a hand, he’s British! He leads the open call fighters to the arena on opening day and helps JIN get through a tough match with MARDUK by revealing the fighter’s weak left knee. He also helps JIN discover who is really is. *See KAZUYA for more on that.

KING – Current champion of the TEKKEN IRON FIST TOURNAMENT. His face is all over the advertisements TEKKEN IS KING.

In sides, there is always some left over dialogue from the page before or the page after. From what I gather from the TEKKEN sides, other than the scenes and character descriptions I described above, the fighters (Marduk, Phoenix, Anna and Nina – sisters, Christie, Raven, Gorgo, Fury, Dragunov and Jin) seem to have gathered together and are trying to escape from the Mishima complex, they are ordered to return to their rooms, but refuse and an intense action sequence ensues. A fighter dies.

Well that’s what I’ve garnered from the pages we received. The character seem pretty close to the game thus far with just a few added twists. Also, there is plenty of violence, blood and a lot of “fucks” that would constitute an R-rating.

Stay tuned to the IESB for further updates!
