WesC –> “He Strait Tekkened that boul!!!”

The live-action Tekken movie may be a bit in release date limbo for the US, but in Japan the film adaptation of the world-famous fighting game franchise has started its marketing blitz. The first salvo is the pretty impressive teaser poster for the movie, featuring John Foo (Tom Yum Goong) as Tekken bad boy Jin Kazama. Japanese viewers will be able to see the movie this coming March 2010.
Well, this new poster is definitely a lot better than the previous ad materials for the film, and Foo does cut a very bad-ass Jin, complete with the trademark gauntlets and emo makeup. Also, the cool-looking Kanji helps a lot I guess. Heh.

Once the film goes out in Japan, I think it won’t be long before other territories see this film. We’ll just have to wait and see… I for one am pretty excited to see if this latest game-to-movie venture pans out. Check out the original article over at Twitch Film.

One final blow to end the year.

Okay, while I think it’s kinda obvious that I’m really, really excited for the upcoming Super Streetfighter IV, it goes without saying that right now, the game in my PS3 and not budging away from it anytime soon is still Tekken 6. The thing is, there’s not much news about Namco’s brawling sequel, and despite SD-Tekken’s saying that Namco-Bandai would support the game well after release, aside from the online patch there has been nothing much. That said, I guess I should end the year with my Final Word on this game which has been central to the blog for the past two and a half years or so.

The arcade port of Namco-Bandai’s top-grossing arcade fighter, the console versions of Tekken 6 meshed in all the additions, tweaks and enhancements that first appeared in the arcade upgrade, Bloodline Rebellion. This meant two more fighters in addition to the four newcomers in Tekken 6.0, new moves and combos for everyone, tweaked gameplay balance, tons of new customizations and costumes, new stages and so forth.

The home versions added as well all-original stuff, such as the much-vaunted (and ultimately controversial) Scenario Campaign mode, which gave players a new way to play with the Tekken fighters outside of the usual one-on-one arena. Also added were the requisite home modes like Ghost Battle, Team Battle, Practice mode, Time Attack and so forth. Additional home extras included new costumes for several characters designed by well-known manga artists and some odds and ends.

In the end, how did the home version of Tekken 6 stack up?

PROS:

BIGGEST and Best Roster Ever. 40++ fighters, each of whom is badass, sexy or awesome in their own ways, with their own deep fighting styles, combos, strengths, weaknesses and personality. You can surely find a favorite and run with him or her, and just go wild. The sheer variety of styles and the depth of play ensures you’ll be playing this game for years.

Graphically Gorgeous. There were issues about the home versions being at sub-HD resolutions. I’ll leave this to the Hardcore HD people out there, since my eyes don’t see the difference. Suffice to say, Tekken 6 looks gorgeous, with wonderfully detailed character models, and silky-smooth and hard-hitting animations that make the game so much fresher and newer than any other previous Tekken thanks to redone moves and animations aplenty. The blokes look bad-ass, the babes are hot as hell… what more can you ask for?

Sexy Customizations. I love all the new ways to pimp out your fighter, which really showcases how detailed and fully-skinned the character models are. Customizing the look of my fave fighter head to toe really gives the game so much more replay value than before; I can honestly say, if it wasn’t for the customizations, I probably wouldn’t be as hot into the game as I am.

Addictive and Rewarding Gameplay. The fighting in Tekken 6 is far more fluid and enjoyable to watch than ever before, in my opinion due to how clear everything is due to the detailed animations. It’s easy to play in the style you wish, and moves flow into the next smoother than ever before. This is easily the most playable Tekken, and the game just gets deeper and more fun the more you play.

Scenario Campaign. Yes, I’ll say it. I actually liked the Scenario Campaign. It’s Tekken Force, bigger and better than it has ever been. The story snippets in the game, as well as a more detailed and definitive story starring Lars and Alisa is probably the closest we’ll see to an actual Tekken anime or movie (I hope that it’s canon). But the base thing is, it’s great to just take your fave fighters and see them kick butt outside the usual ring and be the bad-asses they are Out There.

Kick-Ass Music. Yeah, I love the music. Some may disagree, but I really feel that the soundtrack is as Tekken-ish as it could be. Yeah, the Yodelling rocks as well.

CONS:

A lot of Tekken 6’s endings made me feel like this.

Lots of Crappy Endings. While some are cool, some pretty funny, many of the CG Character Epilogues are too short and leave much to be desired (having nothing to do with the main plot, pointless humor) while several just stink (Leo, Zafina…). The best thing I can say is that overall the endings seem to hint about the next game, which I hope will not make us wait as long as this one did.

P1 and P2 Costume Fiasco. WHY can only one player use customizations? What the hell?

Offline Level Cap. Why can’t I go higher past First Dan offline? Records are separate for both Offline and Online play, so why was this done? It’s irritating and is just Namco-Bandai thumbing off at players to force them to play online.

Onscreen Text. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE REMOVE THAT DAMN TEXT ON THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN???? AAAARRRGH…

Still Not Enough Fan Service. Why can’t the customization be like Soulcalibur IV…? Sigh…

IFFY…

As for Online Play, well, in the beginning let me say that online was HORRIBLE, but it has improved a lot after the patch. Still, I don’t really play online that much, but it’s adequate to good, so in the end things turned out well, thankfully.

If I were to score Tekken 6, I’d give it a 4 out of 5. The base game is still spectacular and the tons of content is impressive. The extras may please some and irritate some, but it still can’t take away from the awesomeness of the game itself.

In the end, I can say that despite quite a few nitpicks and minor flaws, Tekken 6 was all I was expecting, and that’s not at all bad. The graphics, animation, customizations and gameplay are a package worth the price of admission- everything else is waffle. It’s an awesome fighter which I will indeed be playing till the next Iron Fist Tournament, even when Super Streetfighter IV arrives. I just wish that Namco-Bandai doesn’t drop support for the game in the meantime. I still want that multiplayer co-op patch, and hopefully new customs, patches for the P1-P2 customs and so on to come in the months ahead.

Evening! although in 12 minutes it will be morning.

This is my very first blog post so I am hardly expecting anyone to actually read it.  I always thought that blogging was a waste of time simply because I don’t read them, so why on earth would anyone else?  Of course I have been terribly misguided, thinking that no one ever reads blog posts, but that’s probably just me hoping someone will read mine.

I’m 20.

I’m awake now because I recently (three days ago) developed an addiction to Tekken 6.  I am not amazing at playstation.  I bought a PS3 two years ago and only ever used it for blu-ray movies.  The people at the shop gave me Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and it just sat on my bookshelf  until about 3 months ago when I decided to give it ago.  HOLY MOLEY!  It was like being BORN!  Now playstation is the King of everything and my girlfriend is very, very jealous of the King.

So back to why I am awake, keeping in mind that I am not an outstanding gamer, I earned my very first platinum trophy, I bought Tekken 6 last week and as I was playing I kept getting these pop-ups in the top right corner of the screen telling me I was earning trophies.  So I investigated (Google, naturally) and found that we can collect trophies on games we play and share our achievements with the playstation community.  Right then and there I knew how I wanted to spend the rest of my weekends, I would stay home as often as I could so that I might become King of all Games.  But then I went out clubbing and got totally wasted and couldn’t even lift my arms in the morning let alone a controller.

That was this night!

As you can see I have been ’snapped’ by snapstar and my arm is NOT AROUND MY GIRLFRIEND WTF!!!  what was I doing!?  Those are our friends Josh and Bonnie.

So being too hungover to play Tekken I committed my self to next weekend (which is now this weekend) and with steadfast determination, I sat down on the couch this morning and played Tekken for 14 hours straight while my girlfriend did all of the housework (she always does anyway) and bought me treats like Tim-Tams and strawberries covered in Ice-magic.  It was totally worth it, I am one step closer to becoming King of all Games.

I went out and bought more games (I haven’t really figured out what I’m into yet).  Right now I am working on:

1. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
2. Tomb Raider: Underworld
3. Littlebigplanet

and I have to admit I am very excited

The retirement thread was beginning to fill up with posts of disappointed long-term players. There were posts abound about how we could emerge into new areas, into new games. Modern Warfare 2 and Tekken 6 made its debut and are still played heavily, even among the most faithful VF players.

But you know what?

The online activity of Virtua Fighter 5 has never ceased, it seems to me. Quite the contrary seems to be the case, as plenty of players new to the series are dwelling in the online lobbies waiting for the next big fight that could teach them a whole new lot – or literally nothing – about the game. And it seems that even the more hardcore players are returning bit by bit to the saga they spent so much time on and from which they could get so much out of it in mutual return.

Of course, the bad-mouthing and ranting about how “bad” SEGA treated and treat their fans today is still heavily in the air – perhaps not without reason. But to release a real nice post-release patch on the Xbox 360 for a game that did NOT sell well at all, with new features like online replays, is really only true dedicated fan service. ATARI, for example, never patched the Xbox 360 version of Alone In The Dark, a bug feast of some sort…

It seems to me, SEGA, that with us you got the most faithful, most dedicated fans you could ever wish to crave, but, at the same time, we are also the most critical. And I mean there is literally ranting about everything VF: be it VF5’s “beta-ness” (could someone elaborate VF5’s betaness to me again, please? I don’t get it.), or the item packs that were already on disk (though, that’s usually practice now by the industry, mind you).

But still: VF is as entertaining as ever. The sustainability of VF5 and the series as a whole is incredible. Visually highly appealing and gameplay-wise rock solid, Virtua Fighter is still an incredible gamer experience that made up for the finest hours of my videogame life.

VF5: Revolution won’t make a conversion to consoles – so what?! It’s not profitable enough for SEGA to port it – so what?! We still got plenty to play and to rant about in VF Vanilla 5. It all boils down to mind-guessing and out-guessing your opponent and that’s where VF5 nails it, even online, even in lag-heavy situations. Lag is just another factor to be counted in, another variable that should affect your tactics, your way of outthinking your opponent. And hasn’t Chess also survived till now because of its rock-solid gameplay mechanics?

I’m happy that there is something like VF5 and that there is that online component that the Xbox 360 version came with. And while I’m trying to figure out how to end my commentary on the current state of the VF nation, I have actually already drifted off thinking that I should just chip in for another match instead. Just like that:

Ready? Fight!

From Virtual Fighter to Blazblue, you can’t go wrong with fighting games, they are, at its core, the very essence of competitive gaming, you’re thrown in to a cage to fend off your enemy, its your standard 1 vs. 1 grudge fest, nothing too contrived or superfluous,  just your typical game of sportsmanship to converse over who has a bigger vanity so you can debase the underdog with voice recorded messages proclaiming that he/she is a ‘N0()b’.

I often laud them as games that demands a user to be cognitively skilful, testing not merely your co-ordinations, but also your strategic manoeuvre and perceptive acuity. Sure you can mash all you want, but the true grace emerges from experiencing the technicalities and move list to perform astonishing combos to slaughter you’re opponent whilst they spectate in fascination.

Though they are also quite possibly the most frustrating games you could lay your hands on, because such games test entirely on your perseverances that you had achieved through determination, there’s no blaming as to why you’ve lost, fighting games are rarely based on luck or whims, an accidental slip of a finger can be extremely compromising, sure you could just blame the controller,  I’m sure you’d accuse such flaws just to mitigate your failures but we ALL know that didn’t really happen. Though I guess there are exceptions, battery dying on you during the intense moments of victory is a common theme in the modern world of wireless entertainment, still your fault for not replacing the batteries in the first place.

Whatever the fighting game, don’t whine, just accept your defeat, learn from your mistakes, don’t be an arse and keep trying until you succeed.  Petty excuses are useless, you should admire there acute capabilities and maybe ask for some tips instead rather than insulting them with your superficial complaints, embrace the competition and the art of the button chainz and become a tr00 warrior.

So yeah fighting games are awesum and I wanted to write an article on how awesum they are, and the fact I really want a HORI fight-stick!

EAT ME! It sounded like a great idea UNTIL…the response… It has been humbling and hobbling.  A Celebrity Gift Guide all about food… Ok well someone had to taste all the submissions.  Sound like fun? 10 pounds later….IT WAS!

I am a Foodie, I have slimmed down since puberty when I was a moving target in the cafeteria for flying tater tots…Yes as hard as it might be to believe (or maybe not)… I was not always this “Uber Cool” .   In fact, I think the technical term is GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK and not much has changed.   But, a lethal mix of treadmill and Botox has made me tolerable…

Bruce Lee in video games

Like many, I idolise Bruce Lee, been a fan ever since i can remember. After recently re-watching all his past films, I thought it would be good to get a little Bruce lee Gaming info on the go.

I’m young so forgive me if I’m inaccurate as these 2 are a little before my  time;  Bruce lee began his video game career in 1984 on the Commodore 64 and Spectrum consoles with the self titled games BRUCE LEE. The game has continuously throughout numerous reviews  achieved scores equal to and above 85%, which is a brilliant score. Copies do turn up, I’m assuming Bruce Lee was a massive success back in 1984, so understandably lots of cassettes were shipped out. i am seeking out a copy for the spectrum, just to give it a try.

1989 – Bruce Lee Lives was released for the MS-DOS operated PC’s. Never played it neither can i locate a copy on the World Wide Web. Would love it though, apparently its brilliant, and one of the most difficult Bruce Lee games to beat. Runs on some incredibly clever AI, allowing the game to counter you if you continuously use the same tactics on every level, making this game very difficult to master. Sounds like a real gamers game to me.

Dragon Bruce Lee story, I’ll be honest this was ported to too many systems for my liking. The Atari Jaguar, Sega Master System, Sega Megadrive, Sega GameGear and Super Nintendo all got a version (to much money making). I’ve only ever played the Megadrive version, which I honestly thought was average. Now this game is pretty easy to come by on all systems, notably less common on the game gear, but copies still turn up. Its best on the Atari Jaguar, purely due to a better frame rate and better animation, but of course that is not my opinion, just a bit of research.

Bruce Lee Return Of The Legend, Gameboy Advance. I literally don’t have a clue about this game, but it exists. Apparently its a pretty average game, but like all gameboy games nothing will ever be as good as Tetris (or Pokémon).  Should be worth hunting out though, especially if you’re a Gameboy collector ‘cause they’re selling pretty cheaply over on Ebay.

Bruce Lee Quest Of The Dragon Xbox – played it, it is a pile of shit. I’m just mentioning it, in case you were lucky enough to not know of its existence. Its one for the shelf, or better still the bin.

What are they worth?

Pricing varies for these titles but none seem to sell for more than £30. I suppose Bruce lee isn’t overly collectible yet? None the less, they’re a cool set of games.

Bruce Lee – Commodore 64/ spectrum – £5 roughly, still a desired title on both  systems and can sometimes demand prices of £10.
Bruce Lee Lives – PC – there is one copy on Ebay, from Canada its £30, I’m sure you can find it cheaper elsewhere, perhaps a trip to amazon?
Dragon Bruce Lee story – A quick cheeky list of expected prices to pay for a different port of the same game:

• Atari jaguar – £10
• Sega Gamegear – around £10 for a complete copy
• Sega Master system- £10 + for a complete copy
• Sega Megadrive – £5ish for a complete copy
• Super Nintendo – £15 for a mint complete copy

Bruce Lee Return Of The Legend – Gameboy Advance – Around £10 for a new copy at the moment.
Bruce Lee Quest Of The Dragon – Xbox – if you really want one the prices fluctuate, sometimes a copy is £3, others they’re £20. Crazy.

Bruce Lee inspired characters:

Its hardly surprisingly that gaming characters have been influenced by Bruce Lee, the man is a legend. Even a pokemon was designed with Bruce lee in mind, in Japan he’s known as Hitmonlee the kicking fiend (suitable name), but to the rest of us hes just Hitmonlee. Tekken’s Martial Law was also designed based on the fighting style of Bruce Lee, and if you pay attention you can really see Bruce Lee in Martial Law. Jan lee in the Dead or Alive series is another Bruce lee clone, as well as Forest Law (Martial laws son in the Tekken Series). I’m sure there are many many more too.

Surely i can’t be the only one who wants to go away and play as Bruce Lee right now?

S’il y a bien une chose qui m’énerve, ce sont les tricheurs! Et quand, en plus, ils se trouvent sur les services online comme par exemple, le Xbox Live ou le Playstation Network, c’est encore pire!!! Non mais vraiment, ces services sont super, cela nous permet de ne plus jouer seul, et en plus, d’affronter des joueurs du monde entier… Malheureusement, il y en a qui abuse…

Je parle de tous ces gars qui se déconnectent de FIFA ou PES quand ils se prennent un but… ou plus! Des autres qui, à Street Fighter ou Tekken, te bloque dans un coin et te fais des projections et autres attaques à distances style “Hadoken” sans que tu puisses te relever ou encore, dans les FPS, les noobs qui s’acharnent à plusieurs sur un seul gars sans lui laisser le temps de réapparaître! Oui, c’est très énervant… Et surtout déloyal!!!

Je vais encore passer pour le vieux gamers des années 80/90 mais à l’époque du multi offline, ça ne se passait pas comme ça vu que la personne était juste à coté… donc, ou pouvait la frappée! Non, plus sérieusement, nous, à l’époque, nous étions loyaux et fairplay! -> C’est beau ça! ^^

Je recherche le plaisir qu’ont ces cheaters à jouer… Il n’y a rien de marrant si on est sûr de gagner à tous les coups en faisant toujours la même chose… C’est triste! Surtout quand le hardcore gamer trentenaire se prend une rouste par un petit débutant de moins de 15 ans… O_o Ca ne donne plus trop envie de jouer ça… Ca refroîdit, c’est frustrant et c’est nos stats en ligne qui prennent un coup aussi!

Comment combattre cela! Impossible… mais le joueur n’est plus ce qu’il était et ça c’est parce que le jeu est devenu populaire, accessible à tous, donc, même aux petits schtroumpfs tricheurs… Restons clair tout de même, des tricheurs, il y en a toujours eu dans le monde du jeu vidéo… Le truc, c’est que lorsqu’on captait un gars au comportement déloyal dans une salle d’arcade, il était catalogué et plus personne ne jouait avec, il était banni du cercle des gamers! Ca, c’était de la discipline! Sur le Xbox Live, on peut porter plainte mais à vrai dire, je me demande à quoi ça sert… On peut aussi éviter de rejouer contre le cheater qu’on a rencontré, mais… franchement, ça n’arrête pas d’autres “joueurs” à faire le même… Et puis, ce dernier s’en fout de ne plus jouer avec nous… il y a des millions de joueurs connectés par jours!!!

Alors, que faire contre cette race d’être malfaisants!?

Bon, c’est vrai que par exemple, à FIFA, les pros de le déconnexion sont sanctionnés par un match perdu de 3 à 0… Ok, mais ça nous pénalise aussi… Rares sont les fois où, pour ma part, j’ai pu terminer un match sans que mon opposant disparaisse!!! Au final, on ne jouera plus online à part contre ses véritables amis… Enfin, encore que, j’en connais certains (spécial dédicace, il se reconnaitra) qui ont beaucoup de problèmes de connexion chez eux!

Mais ce mal est partout! Oui, bientôt il va même falloir créer une brigade anti-triche sur les services online! Malheureusement, c’est impossible de surveiller toutes les parties qui se jouent dans le monde, c’est sûr! Mais au moins un système qui serait possible, c’est après une déconnexion, empêcher le joueur à avoir accès aux serveurs du jeu en cours! Ce serait déjà une bonne initiative pour éviter toutes conduites déloyales voir illégales! Ca ne pourrait qu’enrichir les communautés…

Je termine avec cette question pour vous, cheaters: si c’est pour gagner à tous les coups et par n’importe quel moyen, pourquoi jouez-vous!?
