Can you believe it??  I have been asked to use my Toastmaster skills to give a FREEEEE! teleseminar about working as a makeup artist in film and TV. I don’t have the exact dates as of yet, but it looks like the second week of January. I have written about this subject many times and I have talked about it on my radio show. Recently on the news Pres. Obama was talking about creating jobs and getting people back to work. This should not be the direction he should go in. Many of the jobs that he is trying to create havoc and lost for ever because of the technology, and people need to read train to a less on what is a job today.

Jobs that exist today didn’t exist 10 years ago, jobs that existed 10 years ago don’t exist today, and there will be jobs in the future that haven’t been invented yet. An example of this is if you were a secretary working in an office, today you are a virtual assistant working from home on the Internet. If you are a graphic designer, you may have worked at home while you may have worked in an office, but today your job title would be web designer. These are just two examples of how the job market has changed and job titles have changed.

Here is another example of how the job market has changed and why. Manufacturing has moved overseas simply because the unions have helped write the job market. For example, you have been saying the car manufacturing business going through big changes and the government bailing out these companies. For one reason I did not agree with this because the price of our cars have gone up simply because the car companies want to keep their same margin of profit while the line worker who belongs to a union makes a high hourly wage. For example, a line worker can make $100,000 or more a year, if they put in overtime.

The American people have become greedy and what they want to make working for someone else. What they need to consider is learning how to start a business of their own so they can make up what the owner of the launch company makes. Technology has a layover to us to do this, but the problem is that the people who use the computers and understand how to start a business of their own on the Internet is the millennial generation simply because they grew up using personal computers and laptops, as well as, cell phones.

It is not hard to use Google to research different products and see which is the top-selling product and contacting that company and become an affiliate with them to help sell their products and earn a commission. 10 months ago I attended a presentation on Internet marketing with someone had taken this theory and used it to build a business marketing credit cards on the Internet. He used pay per click, sales letters, and keyword advertising to build up his business to where he was making $1 million a year. Instead of just advertising and affiliate program, he put together a slick info commercial to promote a presentation in each city where he had a promoter-people up on how much money they could make and make it sound like he invented the wheel. He was then selling this program for $4500 to teach people how to have a business on the Internet. Sooner or later he is going to be found for the fraud that he is. Anyone can do the same thing he did and they don’t have to pay him to learn how to do it.

The first thing I would ask you is: “what is it that you have a passion for and would do for free if you could afford to but would like to earn money doing?”I know a lot of people who have a ready answer but do not know how to take it to the next level and start their own business doing what they enjoy doing. That is why you need to work with someone who is a career coach to help you come up with ways that you can build your own business and build a successful one with financial security. Some of the reasons that people do not try this on their own is because they place obstacles in front of themselves, simply because they believe they will fail, or simply because you lack self-esteem. First you have to learn to overcome these ” limiting beliefs” you have in yourself so you can achieve your desired goals.

Here is another thing that you can do to earn an income in the interim. Think of the jobs that you did as a teenager to earn an income– for instance mowing lawns, walking dogs, or washing cars. Why not go back and do these things as a way of earning an income while you learn the new technology and how to build your own business using the new technology.

There are many avenues that you can take to find an income for yourself today, but you have to be willing to take the initiative and not wait for someone else to create a job for you. You also need to go back to school and learn how to use computers and learn what software there is out there that can help you to build a successful business today. If companies create jobs for new employees– these employees will want to start out making a high income which means the company will sell their products at a higher price just to keep their margin of profit. This will create more inflation which starts the cycle all over again.

So I believe that the president needs to not just talk to companies about creating jobs but they also need to suggest that people learn how to become entrepreneurs. We have gone back to where we were 100 years ago. When the Europeans first came to this country at the beginning of the 20th century they took their wares installed it on pushcarts on street corners. Today, we are doing the same thing only our place of business has changed. For instance, when you sell your product on the Internet you have set up a website where you are selling your products and services and people are paying for their products and services online. So as you can see we have come full circle for where we were at the beginning of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st century.

My final thought on this is, we need to learn to embrace the technology of today and learn how to build a successful business working from home. If you choose not to do this then you will be left behind simply because companies are going to outsource their jobs to countries where they do not have to pay large salaries and they can still keep their margin of profit.

Many writers don’t write full time. They fit their writing in and around their full-time jobs or around caring for their families. If they write for a living, or, like me, write and edit for a living, they may have little time to work on personal writing projects during the day. Plus, as we’ve seen if writers seriously take on the task of promoting themselves to build their platforms, this also can take up an enormous part of their day or the time that could be spent writing.

It’s no wonder, then that many writers, myself included, moan about the fact that they have no time to write. They also may complain that they have no time to market themselves with their writing. I’m here today (Yes, just me again…I’m the expert blogger.) to tell you that a way exists to get a lot of writing done and to use it in a variety of useful ways that doesn’t take up a lot of time. The most efficient time-management tool I have discovered over the years involves “repurposing” your work.

This means reusing your writing, as well as your telesminars, talks, blogs, news releases, etc., for other purposes. The best way for me to explain this is to offer you examples from my own experiences.

Let’s say I write a brief article for my Examiner.com column, a job I took on primarily for promotional reasons. It gives me great exposure online but pays very little. (If you would like to know more about how to become an Examiner, please read about Examiner.com here or apply here – but be sure to use my name when you apply—I get a $50 referral fee, and every little bit helps. Thanks.) I can then expand upon what I write in that column and use it in my blog at www.purespiritcreations.com/wordpress. I also then link the two, increasing readership in both places.

Here’s an even better example of how I repurpose material with very little effort: Each month I produce a podcast script for my show on Conversations with Mrs. Claus (www.thefamilyyak.com). This takes me most of a day. I then take a piece of the script, usually something that includes tips, and modify it slightly to create an article I can submit to the ezine distribution service I use, www.submityourarticle.com. I use this same article in my Pure Spirit Creations newsletter. Then, I take the same article and rewrite it as news release by placing some of the information in quotes. In other words, I make it sound as if someone interviewed me. I then submit this news release to ExpertClick.com’s newswire service, so it can be read by journalists.  (If you are interested in increasing your status as an expert and becoming a member of Expertclick.com or The Yearbook of Experts, please use this link to receive $100 off our membership.) I may even use the same information as the basis for a blog post at www.purespiritcreations.com/wordpress. So, this one piece of work, which wasn’t even actually writing work—although it did take the form of a script, turned into three or four other pieces of writing. All my podcasts scripts may also become fodder one day for a book.

Blog posts also can be turned into articles or essays. Mine tend to be somewhat “essay like” in nature much of the time. It’s easy enough for me to add a few tips to them and submit them to an ezine distribution service, put them into my newsletter or actually submit the piece to a magazine. If yours tend to be more businesslike and include tips, think about how to modify them into personal essays or full-length articles by adding examples from your own life experiences. If you write a series on the same topic, you may find that you have the makings of an e-book or special report.

I added an opt-in to my website called the “Living Fully Challenge.” I offered people a free one-year-long course, basically, in how to live their lives more fully. All they had to do was sign up–giving me the ability to place their email address on my mailing list; in return, they received an assignment every month for a full year. (Not that many people signed up, but enough did to keep it going for about a year and a half.) At the end 12 months, I discovered I had written a book. I simply wrote an introduction, and, wallah…manuscript completed. It’s being reviewed by a publisher as I write this post.

If you conducts teleseminars  or classes in conjunction with your writing, these can be transcribed and edited into e-books or other written products you can sell. Your talks and workshops can be made into videos or CD or MP3 series, which you also can sell.

Look at all your writing work for ways in which it can be repurposed, and you’ll find that you can get a lot of writing accomplished in little time. You’ll also market and promote yourself in less time than you thought it necessary to get the job done. When you examine your writing output at the end of the day, you’ll be amazed at how much writing you’ve accomplished—both what you wanted to write and what you needed to write to handle the “business of writing.”

One of the most inspiring things about this new time is the emerging spirit of co-creation.  I can remember only a few years ago being invited to speak at the Whole Life Expo in Altanta.  All of the big names were there.  On evening we had a party where all the speakers attended. I still remember scanning the room and noticing that half of the New York Times bestseller list was in the room.  The other thing I noticed at that party, back in the early 90s, was how much talking was going on, and how little listening.  Everyone had a pitch to sell, and noone was very interested in buying anyone else’s.

Times have changed!  What I love about these new times is not just the diversity of wisdom and grace that is showering on all of us from every direction, but the ways that we are open to listen and to hear each other with respect.  We come to recognize that our wisdom is made visible in our openess to listen more than our capacity to speak.

Have you been searching for answers to health issues that seem to evade all treatments? Does your doctor dismiss your concerns and questions, or tell you that you’re just aging? Do you feel as though nobody has a clue as to what’s happening to your health and your body?

Recommendations. A synonym for recommendations is references. One of the most powerful conversion tools for attendee-funded webinars is testimonials from those who have experienced you on the subject matter you are teaching. Yet, an endless listing of how great you are is not going to get the job done.

Put yourself in the prospect’s seat for a moment. If you were considering investing in a webinar training course, what would be the most critical due diligence step? You would want to hear from others how great the presenter is, but you want specifics. You are looking for what was taught, why it was beneficial, and the results that the attendee received from putting the teachings into practice.

An example of an effective recommendation…

I had the opportunity to participate in John’s webinar on building a database and found the session to be tremendously informative. John presented a number of strategies and techniques that I was able to quickly put into practice. And, I was able to triple the size of my database in four weeks. What made this an effective recommendation? First, the recommendation was very specific about the course that was taken. It summarized the information that was learned. Most importantly, it provided the results that the attendee received from participating in the session. In essence, it has everything that you would be looking for when evaluating a speaker and their webinar on LinkedIn.

Leverage Groups. One of the great benefits of social media platforms is the groups function. LinkedIn allows you to join up to 50 groups as a free member. Joining is very easy…click a request to join and await the group owner’s approval. Getting results out of the group requires some sophistication in the approach.

The first step is to join groups that have the right people for what you teach. If you are delivering a webinar for small business owners, join groups that have small business owners as members. Using the search groups function, located at the top right of the web page, enter keywords that will help you identify groups to join. Once you enter the keywords, you will be provided with a list of groups presented by size with the largest ones showing first. Fifty groups may seem like a lot, but you will be surprised how quickly you use your slots.

The first temptation is to join the largest groups from the keywords that you’ve entered. The flaw with that approach is that you will quickly get lost. With 25,000 members in a group, it will be impossible to create an impact. Ideally, join groups that have between 1,000 and 5,000 members. At that size, the group has enough mass to justify your time investment, but is not so large that you can’t make yourself visible.

Having selected the group, the first temptation is to create a discussion and tell the group that you have a webinar coming up that they should attend. Do that and the group will blast you! First, the discussion area in a group is considered to be sacred. You will get blasted for creating a discussion to promote anything you do. Typically, people make that mistake once…just once. It is much more readily accepted if you use the news function in the group to link to the webinar registration page. This doesn’t mean that the discussion section should be ignored. There is a tremendous opportunity to creatively use discussions to send prospective attendees your way.

The big picture reason to join a group is to position you as an expert with your target audience. How do you do that? First, participate in discussions related to your expertise. Share your pearls with the group on subjects that help to position your expertise. Since LinkedIn does not have a spell or grammar check function, compose your responses in Microsoft Word and proof them there. You can then copy and paste the response into LinkedIn.

Second, create discussions that position you as an expert. If you are in a sales management group and you are teaching a webinar on designing sales compensation programs, create a discussion that asks the group to share their sales compensation secrets. When group members respond to your discussion, you can do two things…invite them to join your network and invite them to your webinar.

The goal is to use discussions to get your target audience to be impressed and intrigued with your philosophy… Guess where they go when that happens? They click your name and visit your profile page to learn more about you. Now, you can see why your bio, photo, and recommendations are so important.

Another component of your strategy may be to create your own group…very easy to do as a free member on LinkedIn. However, it is much more challenging to get your target audience to join and return frequently. Remember, they only have 50 groups that they can join too… It is recommended that you implement the aforementioned strategy before considering creating a group so you can develop a following. Creating a group solely to drive attendance in your webinars is not the best use of your time.

Another tool to use is the news function of the group. The news section is populated by copying and pasting a URL to a newsworthy item. It is used for articles, but it is also used to promote events. When you paste a URL when creating a news entry, you have the ability to enter a title, brief description, and source of the news. After clicking submit, the entry appears in the news section of the group…and is available for comment.

Part of your social media strategy to drive webinar registrants should be publishing articles you’ve written on related subject matter in the news section of your LinkedIn groups. This is also the place to appropriately link to your upcoming webinar events. Considering what was shared earlier about the timeline people buy webinar seats, wait until the week of the webinar to create the news item. Another faux pas made in LinkedIn groups is adding an entry in the news group more than once. Enter the event once, but at the best time to convert registrants.

Internet Marketing for Women Entrepreneurs with Marilee Tolen is a fabulous class series that I took last year via teleseminars.  The class is geared for Holistic Practitioners.

I was interested in learning but very intimidated by Blogging, Twitter, Teleseminars, Webinars, etc.! I thought it was going to be really hard to learn all this since I am not technically inclined on the computer at all. Some people now call me things like a computer whiz and techno geek. What a hoot!  I started The Holistic Animal Blog, Twitter, Facebook, writing new articles, and so much more through this class.

Marilee is a Holistic Nurse, fellow graduate of the Barbara Brennan School of Healing, expert with Essential Oils and has created many wonderful programs. I consider her an amazing creative force and resource on Internet Marketing!  My creative juices were fueled through this class and I love the new creative outlets for offering my services and adding in new streams of revenue!!  Since I took this class last year my business has been on the rise, sometimes with surprising new opportunities!
