So the TV series proper of Caprica has began airing. I’ve got some thoughts on it.

First, they’re doing a great job of building up on the world we saw in the pilot all those months ago. It feels like a complete place and not just something quickly cobbled together.

Also, I like that you can watch the series even if you’ve never seen Battlestar Galactica and know what’s going on. It’s not drawing too heavily on the source material.

I love the actors. Everyone is doing a great job, especially Esai Morales and Eric Stolz.

I really like the design aesthetic. It’s cool to see people with high-tech, near-future devices and cars and clothes that look like something out of Mad Men.

I’m also quite pleased that they’re showing a gay main character (though he’s something of a bad guy, which I’m not too pleased about, given that the only other non-straight characters we’ve seen on BSG were an insane admiral and a mutineer). It’s also cool that something like a group marriage is taken completely in stride by people.

In fact I’m pleased in general that it’s showing a world where a lot of the values are very different from our own. Sexuality seems to be something a lot freer, for example, and we see what appears to be an opium den that operates openly, implying that drugs aren’t illegal.

I’m also very pleased that Joseph Adams/Yosef Adama isn’t everything that his grown-up son, Admiral William Adama, thought that he was. We see that, at least at this point, he’s not the great civil rights and defense attorney that Bill Adama describes him as. Rather, he’s basically a mob lawyer, and someone not afraid to bribe a judge or enlist the mob’s services when he needs some muscle.

I like that the view we have of Zoe shifts between us seeing her as a Cylon and us seeing her as a girl. That’s a really smart move on the part of the creators and very reminiscent of the so-called “Head Six” character from BSG.

Overall I’m very happy with the series so far, even though we’re only a few episodes in. I look forward to seeing what they do with it, and how long it runs before SyFy pulls the plug, since I have no faith in them treating this show any better than they treated its parent.

Okay, so those of you who have watched the show Lost religiously like I have will get more out of this post than anyone else will. How about that crazy season premiere last night?

In the first episode (or shall I say two episodes), it seems as if the creators of Lost have decided to show viewers an alternate reality. Not only do they continue on with the story of the hydrogen bomb not blowing them back in time, but they also show you what would have happened if the plane never crashed. So here’s my first point of confusion — which storyline is real?

I have always been a big John Locke fan, too, but things are just getting a bit too odd for me on that front. So we’ve finally figured out that the man who looks like Locke isn’t really him (because his dead body is on the island), but now we are to believe that he is a reincarnated version of Jacob’s opponent. Might I add that I would like to know more about him. All we know is that he is ‘the man in black.’ 

And what happened with Sayid last night? He was dying, then Jacob told Hurley to take him to the temple, where they could cure him. When that happened, the people at the temple killed Sayid, but at the end of the episode, he is sitting up and talking. Confusion again.

Also, I have to say that it’s a bummer Juliet’s character was killed off. She was a good match for Sawyer, but now things will most likely change for him and Kate. Or Jack and Kate. Who knows…

Sheldon, right, taunts Leonard as Leonard attempts to remove Sheldon from a ball pit

This blog marks the first time I’ve analyzed CBS’ hit show The Big Bang Theory this season. After watching this week’s episode, “The Einstein Approximation,” I saw several examples of the writers avoiding any attempt to link Sheldon Cooper with the autism spectrum, but certainly toying with those traits whether they intend to or not.

My most popular blog last year was an overall critique of Sheldon, portrayed by Jim Parsons, and how he and the production staff of Big Bang handled inquiries regarding Sheldon’s mental state. The creators summarized his behaviors as “Sheldony,” but even without an official label, I’ve often cited the show as a great illustrator for autism and how others respond to the bohemian characteristics of Sheldon.

In Monday’s episode, Sheldon attempts to solve a physics problem and devotes all his effort to solving the problem, using anything nearby as a prop. Unfortunately, his quest for knowledge usually comes at the expense of his friends. One scene combines two trends of autistic people and employs them for comedic effect. The first represents an obliviousness to the surrounding environment because Sheldon is focused solely on his mission. Since Sheldon can’t sleep while he’s solving a problem, he leaves his apartment in the middle of the night and enters a ball pit inside a kids play area (rigging a tumbler and alarm system to get inside). A security guard then calls Leonard, and Leonard arrives to bring Sheldon home.

Before Leonard meets Sheldon, the security guard tells Leonard that he once worked a party with a “special” kid, special a clear reference to a mentally disabled child. Leonard replies that Sheldon is “extra special.” Again, the writers don’t consider Sheldon an autistic, but Leonard’s reply reinforces the audience that Sheldon’s thought process is vastly different from his academic and social peers and could be easily interpreted that Sheldon, at the very least, definitely has traits that match with autism spectrum disorder.

Of course, Sheldon refuses to leave because he’s still working on his problem, using balls to represent the parts of a carbon atom. The stubborn behavior reflects the intense focus autistic people put into their projects, refusing to let anything distract them, which often leads to ignoring other people’s requests. Leonard threatens to forcibly remove Sheldon and enters the ball pit to do so (pictured), but Sheldon’s superior knowledge of the structure allows him to outfox Leonard, appearing every few seconds to taunt him with “Bazinga!”

While fans familiar with autism still relate Sheldon’s behavior to that of an autistic friend or relative, I haven’t read any articles or noticed a recurring pattern on the show that suggests a direct link in the Big Bang timeline. Seeing almost every episode since season 2, I’m convinced that making Sheldon an official autistic would remove most of his comedic value. We understand much more than we did when Rain Man was released, but after seeing the domino effect that occurred after Dr. Andrew Wakefield suggested a link between vaccines and autism, the precedent exists to suggest that fans, TV critics, and casual mainstream viewers could blindly assume that anyone with autism would interact the same way as Sheldon. That assumption would certainly complicate the education process and perhaps kill the momentum The Big Bang Theory is riding.

For now, I’ll continue to enjoy the comedic follies of contemporary television’s favorite nerds while I watch for more “hidden” signs of autism that find their way into the show’s script.

WASHINGTON – The military’s top uniformed officer on Tuesday made an impassioned plea for allowing gays to serve openly in uniform, telling a Senate panel it was a matter of integrity and that it is wrong to force people to “lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens.”

The comments by Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, set the stage for the Defense Department’s yearlong study into how the ban can be repealed without causing a major upheaval in the military.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates, appearing with Mullen before the Armed Services Committee, announced plans to loosen enforcement rules involving the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that has been in effect since 1993.

President Barack Obama has called for a repeal of the policy, although he did little in his first year in office to advance that goal. If he succeeds, it would mark the biggest shake up to military personnel policies since President Harry S. Truman’s 1948 executive orderintegrating the services.

“No matter how I look at the issue,” Mullen said, “I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens.” Noting that he was speaking for himself and not for the other service chiefs, Mullen added: “For me, it comes down to integrity — theirs as individuals and ours as an institution.”

Congress enacted the law that enshrined the “don’t ask” policy, which was intended to soften the previous blanket prohibition on gays in the military. “Don’t ask” says gays may serve so long as they kept their sexuality private. Gay rights organizations have called that an insult and have said it is a form of discrimination.

Repeal of the ban would require a new law passed by Congress. Gates and Mullen said their efforts are intended to make sure the Pentagonis ready when that time comes.

The hastily called session gave Obama high-level cover on a divisive social issue complicated by the strains on an all-volunteer military force of fighting two wars.

Gates, who says he is a Republican, is the only member of former President George W. Bush’s Cabinet whom Obama asked to stay on. He has gained a reputation for candor and caution. Mullen’s words were a forceful endorsement from a careful man, but his very appearance, starched uniform and four stars on view, spoke as loudly.

Gates drew unusually pointed and partisan criticism from Republicans on the panel for saying that the review will examine how, not whether, to repeal the ban.

Arizona Sen. John McCain, the top Republican on the committee, icily told Gates he was disappointed in his position. In sharp questioning, McCain angrily suggested that the Pentagon was usurping Congress’ job in rewriting the law should it choose to do so.

“Has this policy been ideal? No, it has not,” McCain said. “But it has been effective.”

Mullen looked pained when Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., suggested that Mullen had preordained the outcome of any study of the wisdom of repeal by signaling his own opposition to the ban.

“This is about leadership, and I take that very, very seriously,” Mullen replied, tightlipped.

Several other Republicans sided with McCain, warning Mullen and Gates not to pursue a change at a time when the United States is fighting two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and facing a continuing threat of terrorism. Democrats said they would back a change in policy.

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and chairman of the committee, said a repeal of the law might be slipped into a broader military policy bill that authorizes defense spending.

Democratic Sen. Mark Udall said his Colorado constituents pride themselves on allowing others to live and let live.

“You don’t have to be straight to shoot straight,” said Udall, quoting libertarian Barry Goldwater.

Gates suggested that lawmakers keep the intensity of debate in check until the military can get a better handle on how to proceed. To sort out the details, Gates has turned to Pentagon counsel Jeh Johnson andGen. Carter Ham, who leads Army forces in Europe.

“Keep the impact it will have on our forces firmly in mind,” the secretary implored lawmakers

Mullen said it was his sense that rank-and-file troops would support the change.

“I have served with homosexuals since 1968,” he said in response to questions from Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala. “There are a number of things cumulatively that get me to this position.”

Ham is a former enlisted infantryman who rose through the ranks to eventually command troops in northern Iraq in 2004 and hold senior positions within the Joint Staff. Recently, he helped conduct an investigation into the shootings by a soldier at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas.

As the Pentagon’s top legal counsel, Johnson has played an integral role into the effort to try to close themilitary prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

New Line Cinema has shed light on the hope for third “Sex and the City“ film. Despite report which mentioned that they have expanded the franchise again by planning “Sex and the City 3″, Digital Spy claimed the studio’s executives have denied the news as their representative said, “This is not true.”On Wednesday, January 27, The Sun came out with report that the second sequel to this Sarah Jessica Parker-starring film has been worked on though “Sex and the City 2” has yet to be released. “There is also a third movie on the go. It’s under wraps for publicity reasons,” a source told the U.K.-based site.

The third film was additionally reported being shot back to back in order to outrun the rapid aging of the franchise’s stars. “It makes sense to film the second and third movies back to back. The characters will look a lot younger on screen when the third movie is out in a couple of years,” the source further claimed. “They’re keen to look as young as possible because that movie will be their last. They want to go out on a high.”

Taking place two years after the end of the first movie, “Sex and the City 2″ will see Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw Preston and her friends bring their glamor lives to a place that is far away from their New York City homes. However, official plot for the film has not been unveiled yet.

Beside Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis will return to the upcoming movie to reprise their roles as Samantha Jones, MirandaHobbes Brady, and Charlotte York Goldenblatt respectively. Featuring a cameo by Miley Cyrus, this drama comedy is set to be dropped in U.S. theaters on May 28.

ABC has officially pulled the plug on Ugly Betty, starring America Ferrera, saying the last episode will air in April in the U.S.While the announcement today came as a surprise to fans, industry sources said the once ‘it’ show which premiered in autumn 2006, had been struggling in recent years with audience erosion.

The fashion-world comedy drew up 5.5million viewers on Channel 4.

Ugly Betty’s executive producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Steve McPherson said in a joint statement: ‘We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty’s final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion.’

ABC said eight episodes were left. The fourth series is yet to air in Britain, but had struggled for ratings in America.

Based on a Colombian telenovela, the warm-hearted dramedy stars Ferrera with big braces, as an ambitious but style-challenged young woman out to build a future at a New York fashion magazine.

The series has been saluted with Emmy, Golden Globe and Peabody awards.

In 2007, Ferrera won a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding lead actress.

Who cares about Dancing on Ice, Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance when there is only one show on TV that makes us wish we went to ballet school with boys in tights and thats Sky One’s, Got to Dance (hottie Ashley Banjo from Diversity being a judge on the show has nothing to do with it, we swear!). A fave at Stellar things are heating up this week. The first semi final happened last night and clear front-runners, Jukebox Juniors and Emily pirouetted through (excuse the pun!) The luxury label, owned by Jimmy Choo boss Tamara Mellon, announced the actress’s new title today, following months of speculation about a possible collaboration.

Like Mellon and fellow investor, Miramax boss Harvey Weinstein, Parker will own an equity stake in the firm.

But she admitted that her appointment would have its critics: ‘You could make many arguments to why I am not qualified. I would say that I am very aware of the enormity of the titles, and how important they are, and my response is that they [the board] felt confident in their decisions.

‘We had launched our Heritage collection, and the dresses had appeared in Sex and the City 2.

‘We talked about how we could work together and have a meaningful business relationship.’

Parker, who was hailed as a ‘great American style icon’ by the brand, will begin by working with its new diffusion line Halston Heritage.

The appointment heralds a new career for the actress, who already holds a role as executive producer on Sex and the City.

It is her second foray into fashion design following a 2007 collection called Bitten for discount U.S. retailer Steve & Barry’s. It was cancelled after the company filed for bankruptcy in 2008.

Halston has also recently hired London-based Greek-Austrian designer Marios Schwab as its new creative director. His first collection for the label is to be revealed at New York Fashion Week next month.

Parker had a celeb line called Bitten at Steve & Barry stores where each piece cost less than $19.98, but when the store chain went belly-up in 2008 the discount label was kaput.

Luckily Parker had entered the scent biz in 2005 with Coty and had major success with fragrances Lovely (2005), Covet (2007) and a trio of scents — Endless, Twilight and Dawn (2008).

Her latest fragrance is called SJP NYC and launches in Macy’s next month.

Roy Halston Frowick shot to fashion fame by designing the pillbox hat Jackie Kennedy wore to her husband’s inauguration in 1961. Later in the ’70s his pared-down looks were a perfect match for the international jetset and the disco era. His clothes were worn by Liza Minelli, Elizabeth Taylor, Diana Ross, Bianca Jagger and Angelica Huston.

By signing Parker now, Halston would benefit from the splashy marketing that will surround the release of the highly-anticipated fashion-flick Sex and the City 2 in May.

Parker even wears a Halston-like look in the movie posters and in the movie trailer.

Despite reports and plenty of wishing on the part of the fans, Carrie Bradshaw’s second “Big”-gest love, Aidan Shaw, won’t be making an appearance in “Sex and The City 2

On Saturday afternoon, following his Television Critics Association panel to promote Season 2 of his Showtime series with Toni Collette, “The United States of Tara,” John said he won’t be in the movie.

In December, Sarah Jessica Parker told MTV News she could not “confirm nor deny” that John was coming back for a cameo as Aiden, after he was reportedly spotted in Morocco at the same time “Sex and The City 2″ was being filmed there.

But on Saturday, John told AccessHollywood.com he wasn’t even in the North African country as past reports suggested.

“I wasn’t in Morocco,” John told Access.

In fact, John said the shots of the star people have referred to are actually from some time ago.

“I was in Istanbul about six years ago and somebody put a picture up and said I was Morocco,” he said.

When asked about Sarah Jessica’s recent non-denial and non-confirmation, John smiled and said his former co-star was doing the right thing for her film.

“Well, if I were a producer, I would do the same thing,” he laughed.

First of all, WOW!  On Wednesday, January 6, 2009,  I was able to meet one of my favorite comediennes and all around inspirations!  I had the fortune of seeing her film a guest appearance for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”.  My amazing friend Elisa is a trooper and stayed with me for about nine hours on the set!  Since I am at a loss here is Elisa wrote at her blog (AKA CHECK OUT HER AWESOME BLOG!):

We’ve just learned that Sex and the City 2 began filming in NYC again yesterday for the first time since that red carpet scene at the Zeigfeld Theatre on Oct. 16.

Yesterday they were filming at Silvercup Studio and it looks like they will be back there today too. (Thanks to Neal B and John!)

Be on the lookout for NO PARKING signs for SATC2 around the NYC, they should be filming for the next couple of weeks!

ruly begun. Earlier this week we published the official trailer, which made us all giddy with excitement, and it seems other companies are also jumping on the bandwagon.

Someone over at Warner Bros. needs to shuffle some paperwork and release a proper plot synopsis for Sex and the City 2, because it’s starting to get confusing. Rumors have had it pegged as some sort of gay wedding movie with a splash of cheating. But the trailer has them wandering around in the desert, for some reason. Now there’s this: Sarah Jessica Parker says it’s a caper movie. That’s right, a Sex and the CityOcean’s 11.

Parker dropped this strange plot revelation in an interview with the BBC where she says, “It’s been going beautifully and it’s fun and exciting and very much an adventure.” What kind of adventure? “…it’s been great and it’s really a romp, it’s really a caper this movie.”

I realize Carrie’s obsessed with material possessions but I think few expected she’d resort to carefully orchestrated robbery just to secure a new pair of shoes. This movie can’t possibly be this weird, can it?

He may be married to Sarah Jessica Parker but Brodrick has revealed that he has never appeared onscreen with his wife and he is not about to start now even though Sex and the City is such a huge hit.

Broderick admits that he has turned down every chance to star in the show.

Talking to Us Weekly magazine Broderick says “We did a play together, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, but it’s not really something we look for.

“I had a couple of chances when the TV show (Sex and the City) was on. But I was never free for the right character.”

“The Late Late Show” host Craig Ferguson dialed up friend Kathy Griffin during the taping of his show on Tuesday night to give her the opportunity to come clean about her f-bomb explosion on CNN.

Kathy appeared on the New Years Eve special of “Anderson Cooper 360°,” where she left people’s ears ringing as she rang in 2010 live from Times Square. In a discussion about balloon boy,Falcon Heene, the comedian mispronounced the child’s name using an expletive.

She explained to Craig, “I was amused by how if you watch the worldwide coverage of that story, then you can hear his first name pronounced in many different ways and, in fact, his own mother has an accent and there were times that it sounded almost as if she pronounced the name of her own child Falcon as a verb that adult film actors use…”

Though Craig tried to clarify if Kathy got fired from CNN, all she said in response was, “I don’t think I have really done a job well until I get fired. Am I getting fired from this phone conversation?”

The “My Life on the D-List” star tried to justify her choice of words to the talk-show host by saying, “It’s like what Shakespeare did. I am a wordsmith.”

“The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” airs weeknights on CBS.

Digital Spy has learnt that both former Friends stars Lisa Kudrowand Courtney Cox have never been approached to feature in a movie version of the highly successful sitcom.

The stars, speaking to The AP, compared the show to Sex and the City which has since benefited from a leap into the movie world: “Sex and the City was already filmic. It was a single-camera show that was like a half-hour movie every week, anyway. Our show was multi-camera in front of an audience,” Kudrow said.

She went on to add: “Whenever movie versions of those types of shows have been done, they’ve been sort of satirical. Maybe in ten more years, other people will play us and make fun of it.”
