Firstly, I must just say I’m not a foodie. Yeah I eat and I enjoy it, especially in social set

Firstly, I must just say I’m not a foodie. Yeah I eat and I enjoy it, especially in social settings, but I couldn’t be assed to cook. I love watching shows like Come Dine with Me, but that’s more for the personalities rather than the food. I’ve never really gotten into shows like MasterChef (SA, UK or Australia). With that in mind, I’m really enjoying season two of the South Africa edition. It’s shot beautifully and there are people in the competition who (yes it is intended) are hungry to win it. We’re four episodes in and last night we were introduced to the top 16, who will all be heading down to the Nederburg Estate to compete in the MasterChef SA kitchen. Their names and Twitter details are below:

Amanda (30) a recruitment consultant from Johannesburg #MCSA_Amanda
Herman (34) an electrician from Witbank #MCSA_Herman
Jason (22) a graduate from Cape Town #MCSA_Jason
Joani (46) an ex-fashion designer from Durban #MCSA_Joani
Kamini (30) a food blogger and DJ from Cape Town #MCSA_Kamini
Karen (35) a stay-at-home mom from Howick #MCSA_Karen
Khumo (19) a student from Pretoria #MCSA_Khumo
Leandri (23) a scientist from Mahikeng #MCSA_Leandri
Mary (30) a professional dancer from Johannesburg #MCSA_Mary
Neil (40) a communications consultant from Johannesburg #MCSA_Neil
Ozzy (22) a student from Johannesburg #MCSA_Ozzy
Sanet (47) an ex-financial Manager from Boksburg #MCSA_Sanet
Seline (25) a civil engineer from Mahikeng #MCSA_Seline
Shannon (28) a graphic artist from Cape Town #MCSA_Shannon
Tiron (32) a video store clerk from Johannesburg #MCSA_Tiron, and
Tumi (34) a financial analyst from Johannesburg #MCSA_Tumi

Now last night I got to go through to an exclusive MasterChef dinner with a handful of celebrities, bloggers and of course Chef Benny. The tables were turned on the judge, who was now expected to cook for his guests. The guests seemed to be impressed with the charming Benny’s offering. It all worked wonderfully. The setting was great, food and wine paired perfectly and all the guests got to watch the new episode of the show, all why enjoying a good evening with great company. Check out a few pics below.

What a shock to hear about the sudden death of James Gandolfini. Although I cannot claim to be a close friend or real acquaintance of any sort, I did have the opportunity to work side by side with him on a rare occasion or two. On set, he was known for his generosity and just being a lot of fun. He was a really nice guy.

One of Gandolfini’s last public appearances was on June 10 when he attended the Stella by Starlight Gala in New York City to benefit the programs of the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. James was there to celebrate the career of his close friend and honoree Elaine Stritch who is retiring from Broadway this year.

He will be missed.

I’ve tried to stay away from potentially controversial/hot button/polarizing subjects on this blog, but I can no longer remain silent: If I was Monica Gellar I would have chosen Richard Burke.

Richard and his rugged manliness and Kennedy bloodline and utter charm.

Richard and his sexy-as-hell voice.

Richard and his grownup behavior.

Even Richard and his mustache.

Richard. Richard. Richard.

Tom Selleck. Tom Selleck. Tom Selleck.

Richard + Jillian.

Tom + Jillian.

Richillian.

TomJill.

I’ll stop now.

Actually, no, I won’t. Let’s talk about TomJill for a minute. Working, or only in my head?

I’ve been in one of those odd little moods lately. You know, where you’re trying desperately hard to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life?

Sometimes I feel like Chandler after he decides to become a Copywriter. “Cheese – It’s milk… that you chew.” “Crackers – Because your cheese needs a buddy.”), but so what? So I have a degree. And?

I’ve been mentally going back and forth with myself lately.

Yes, yes I want to become an awesome amazing screenwriter and write the best television on earth.

But I don’t really want to live in LA. And in order to get my feet off the ground I have to do that.

And I am terrified of freelancing. I mean, I would love to do. I would love to get my name out there. But I’m struggling financially enough as it is and can hardly find the time between jobs to tackle a freelancing assignment. I thought about contributing to The Mary Sue (even for free), but when I would I find the time? But then, would the deadlines force me to sit down and complete something? And if so, doesn’t that make it worth it?

But if Freelancing is thrown out the window (let’s just pretend, okay), what would I do with my life?

I’ve thought a lot about teaching lately. Maybe only because Dad always seemed to push the idea on me (You know, you could become a teacher. And then teach in Washington State…(not that I ever want to live that far North, unless it’s in England)). And I have felt like the Akashic Records of Theatre information. And all I could think was “What will I do with all of this information?!”

Simple. Teach. Right?

But then, I don’t want to become a teacher or a professor until I’ve accomplished something in my life as a writer.

And then I think, maybe I’ll just go to Grad School. Study Gender Studies and do countless studies on the treatment of women in the media and go work for Eve Ensler or Gina Davis, or become a Professor of Gender Studies. Or I’ll go to Grad School for English and become a Professor. Or I’ll go to Grad School for Playwriting and Screenwriting and have the connections I need to not have to move LA and make it wherever I want to live on my own time.

Seriously, this is 2013. Can I please be a screenwriting and live somewhere with a decent climate and nice public transportation?

And working at a Bookstore and staring at all five million books that I want to read is driving me crazy. Really? I can only read 50 books in a year? Because I need to read, like, a thousand. Can my only job be reading? Because that would be excellent.

So, does all of this constitute a quarter life crisis yet? Because I really feel like I’m getting there.

Cutler and Stan (Harry Hamlin and Jay R. Ferguson) rush to the nearest TV to see what’s in sto

Cutler and Stan (Harry Hamlin and Jay R. Ferguson) rush to the nearest TV to see what’s in store for their characters.

So far Mad Men‘s sixth season has been my least favorite. Though I’ve read articulate complaints elsewhere online, I’m still having trouble nailing down the exact reasons for my diminished excitement. I even procrastinated the last few episodes for days after their respective airdates instead of rushing to catch them immediately for the sake of spoilers. I trust that Matthew Weiner and his team have surprises and shocks in store for us in the future, but I’d rather have them five episodes ago than idle impatiently till next year’s final season.

(Least favorite parts this year, for what it’s worth: another round of Don Draper adultery; Pete’s wacky mom and her fantasy life with her nurse, Manolo; and suddenly sideburns! Favorite parts: the ambiguously chipper Bob Benson; the mismatched buddy-art comedy team of Rizzo and Ginsberg; and returning special guest Danny Strong, living large in Hollywood.)

As I said last year the first time I attempted this: I’m terrible at guessing what happens next in any given show. Like the rest of the internet, that never stops me from trying. Most fans have their own ideas about what will or should happen next. My ideas are simply way more off-base than most other fans’.

Courtesy spoiler alert begins here; if you follow the show but haven’t caught up through last Sunday’s episode, “The Quality of Mercy” (not to be confused with the Twilight Zone episode “A Quality of Mercy”), you’re missing quite a few developments that you’ll need to check out before setting a viewing appointment for this Sunday’s finale, “In Care Of”.

What I’d be interested in seeing happen, even though none of it will, would include:

* Peggy and Ted Chaough share another illicit kiss. Don walks in on them and plays hypocritical morality police again, shaming Ted but ignoring Peggy. While Ted has a tearful breakdown, an incensed Peggy screams, “YOU NEVER LET ME HAVE NICE THINGS!” then runs into her office, creates the greatest Ocean Spray campaign of all time just to spite Don, and practices signing “Mrs. Peggy Chaough” over and over again in a notebook using a tube of Belle Jolie lipstick.

* Don’s secretary Dawn pops in to ask if she can have closure on the whole “racial tension” subplot that permeated the season’s early episodes but vanished when no one gave the nonwhite characters anything else to do.

* Li’l Sally finally breaks down and confesses to Betty about catching her dad and Sylvia in a compromising position. Since the last vestiges of her constant indignation drained away last week, Betty merely rolls her eyes and decides to spill the beans about Don. All the beans. Much more than Sally could possibly need to hear. After the end of the third hour of gossiping, Betty realizes she’s treating Sally as a friend instead of a daughter and grounds her for a week to put her in her place.

* Megan’s soap-opera characters — the original and her twin — are unexpectedly written off the show to boost lagging ratings. In an attempt at pushing the limits of the young TV medium, both characters meet their ends in a twin-vs-twin knife fight staged with a combination of primitive split-screen and a laughably wigged stunt double. It looks so terrible, and her firing by her open-marriage bosses is so acrimonious, that she’s a lot less shattered than Don had secretly hoped.

* Henry Francis shows up and demands more than two lines. He’s briskly escorted into the nearest limbo alongside Peggy’s ex Abe, Trudy Campbell, and Mrs. Ken Cosgrove.

Bob Benson: THREAT OR MENACE?

* The real death that some pundits think has been foreshadowed all season long finally happens. The victim: Sylvia Rosen, murdered in her apartment. And Don is a suspect! Dun dun DUUUUUUN. Such an intensive inquiry will begin opening cracks in Don’s long-standing facade, humbling him before his peers and rendering him more helpless than ever. We’ll know the real culprit is Arthur, painfully aware all this time of their shenanigans, but his years in the medical practice taught him a few tricks about skewing evidence just so.

* With Don incarcerated, Bert Cooper deciding to retire, Roger preoccupied with pestering Joan for visitation rights to their love child (not to mention appearing at local bazaars and garden parties in desperate hopes of selling off his last three thousand copies of Sterling’s Gold), Pete uses some heretofore completely hidden leverage to stage a coup, take over the agency, and rename it Campbell Holloway Cosgrove Crane. Jim Cutler is on board with this for no apparent reason.

* To celebrate Pete’s takeover, his new indentured henchman Bob Benson insists on throwing the greatest office party of all time. While the finest drinks, the most ornate decorations, and world-famous musicians are brought in by the carload, Bob merely stands back, smiles widely, surveys all that this season has wrought, laughs maniacally on the inside, and assures himself that everything is going according to plan.

* In the final shot, Don stands alone in his prison cell, staring at his reflection in a mirror, and his cell door is visible behind him in the mirror, because symbolism or whatever.

* Not merely content to fire Megan from his soap, Ted McGinley also vows to return next season and help pound the nails into Mad Men‘s coffin. It’s just this little thing he likes to do.

(Revisar “Mac and Charlie: White Trash” – S06E05)

No sabe escribir prácticamente nada.

Today has been the laziest day I’ve had for a very long time! Dan and I were wanting to go to the Rec Centre today but that didn’t happen. The farthest each of us went outside today was just outside the door on the front step. We didn’t go anywhere! LAME!!!! I cought up on a show that I’ve missed called Breaking Amish. I only missed the first 6 weeks of the show, so I only had to watch 6 shows. That took up most of the afternoon. For supper, I had 2 packs of dunkaroos and 3/4ths of a pack of pull and peel twizzlers. I actually felt kind of sick afterwords and realized I needed to eat something more but couldn’t decide what. At around 10 danny decided to cook some steak! That was tasty! I am still having no luck with jobs.
I am honestly surprised I made a blog out of todays events. Hopefully tomorrow is more eventful!

It has been debated many times over the years, and it still continues today. With GMA 7′s late Sunday afternoon timeslot vacated after the cancellation of ‘HOT TV‘, I have to wonder if ‘Startalk’ needed to return to a Sunday timeslot. Before going to this discussion, here’s how the show started.

‘Startalk’ debuted on GMA 7 in 1995. The program originally competed head-on with ABS-CBN’s ‘Showbiz Lingo’ on a Sunday timeslot. That’s right, Startalk started their run on a Sunday. It soon gained a reputation for its explosive and hard-hitting reports on the lives of Filipino celebrities, that it gained the title “The Only Showbiz Authority”. But while it gained a significant fanbase and a controversial yet popular host in Rosanna Roces, in 1998 GMA 7 decided to move the show to a Saturday timeslot after Eat Bulaga, upon realizing they couldn’t beat ‘Showbiz Lingo’ on its timeslot. The move to Saturdays effectively killed off ABS-CBN’s efforts of airing a weekly drama series opposite ‘Startalk’. A year later however, ‘The Buzz‘ debuted as a replacement of ‘Showbiz Lingo’, and their first recruit turned out to be one of the original hosts of ‘Startalk’ in Boy Abunda.

From then on both ‘Startalk’ and ‘The Buzz’ dominated their respective timeslots, and along the way several competitors came and went, such as GMA 7′s ‘S-Files‘, ‘Showbiz Central‘ and ‘HOT TV’, and ABS-CBN’s ‘Showbiz Sabado’ ‘EK Channel’, ‘Entertainment Konek‘, ‘Entertainment Live‘, and TV5′s ‘Juicy’ and ‘Paparazzi’, neither of which were able to equal or surpass the viewing audience of ‘Startalk’ and ‘The Buzz’. Today the only other weekend showbiz talk show aside from the two is ABS-CBN’s ‘Showbiz Inside Report‘.

Soon after GMA 7′s cancellation of ‘HOT TV’, they have stayed away from producing a replacement showbiz talk show, instead airing Filipino-dubbed American films on the timeslot against ‘The Buzz’. GMA 7′s lack of effort replacing ‘HOT TV’ gave ‘The Buzz’ further headway in the ratings. With ‘The Buzz’ dominating, it may just be a matter of time before ‘Startalk’ returns to Sundays and start competing with ‘The Buzz’. After all, the only showbiz talk show that can rival ‘The Buzz’ is ‘Startalk’ itself.

I think moving ‘Startalk’ to Sundays is the right deal. And moving it to an earlier timeslot after ‘Sunday All Stars’ will help showbiz aficionados get their fix earlier than what ‘The Buzz’ offers. I would rather see teen-oriented shows like ‘Teen Gen’ on a Saturday because it benefits teenagers more during their downtime. So moving ‘Startalk’ to Sundays should be good for GMA 7, and for the television audience as a whole.

The other day while watching the grand final of ‘The Voice’ one of my best mates began texting me the same time as a lady friend. Both were keen viewers of the show. As the four finalists each presented their song, the texts came thick and fast and continued to do so till the announcement of the winner two hours later. I was flat out texting my mate then my lady friend then my mate …. And so on. Finally, before hitting the sack, I texted a ‘luv’ with a ‘xo’ not to my lady friend as intended but to my mate. When I realized my mistake I phoned my mate and hastily explained my error. He laughed but ribbed me about it the next day.

In episode four, “Vatos,” I’ve officially hit the halfway point of season one. Meanwhile, everything hurts and nothing is okay.

Previously on TWD: Rick & Co barely escaped Atlanta with their lives, but had to leave one member, Merle Dixon, behind. They arrived back at camp where Rick was reunited with his family and the group is forced to tell Merle’s brother, Daryl, what happened. Shane opened a can of whoop-ass on Abusive Ed Peletier, and Rick, Daryl, T-Dog, and Glenn headed back into the city to try and rescue Merle, while grabbing the bag of guns that Rick had left there. But when the guys reached the rooftop where T-Dog left Merle handcuffed to a water pipe, they found that he had sawed off his own hand to escape. Gross.

The episode opens with Andrea and her little sister Amy sitting together in a boat and fishing. They have a brief argument about their father and the way he taught them to fish before they realize he taught them differently on purpose. He understood that Andrea needed to catch the fish, while Amy needed to throw them back. The girls cry together and it’s actually a very touching scene. It’s one of those quiet moments where we get to reflect with the characters about how their lives used to be, and how much things have changed for them. It makes me really excited to get more scenes like this for other characters. I love back story!

Back in Atlanta, Daryl starts freaking out about Merle and turns his crossbow on T-Dog, before Rick threatens to shoot him. And once again I’m somewhat baffled by Rick’s behavior. He’s risking his life and the lives of three other people by coming back into the city to save Merle, and now he’s saying he won’t hesitate to shoot Daryl in the head. Now, I know I’ve seen other shows in the past where the intrepid hero has to lay down some badassdom to keep the troops in line, and it hasn’t bothered me in the past, so I was struggling to come up with what it was in this situation that wasn’t sitting right for me. I think it’s because the shift is so drastic. Clearly Rick is a strong character. He wouldn’t be the lead if he wasn’t. But there have been so many moments where we’ve seen him as such a quiet, earnest character that when he switches into his tough guy mode, it throws me off a bit. I think I’d like to see a little bit more of Rick’s strength in the quieter moments of the show. Nothing crazy, mind you, I don’t want to totally change his character. But maybe a little less puppy eyes and a little more strength will help the transitions into those parts go a little smoother. Then again, this is only his fourth day after the zombie apocalypse. I should probably be cutting him a little bit of slack. It does leave me interested in seeing where his character is heading as the show progresses and he becomes more entrenched in this brave new world.

BACK ON TOPIC. Daryl and the guys play CSI and start following Merle’s trail to try and find wherever he got off too. Turns out one handed Merle is pretty much a badass. He took out a couple of Walkers on his own and cauterized his bleeding stump before leaving the department store. Daryl wants to continue after his brother, but T-Dog and the rest of the guys decide they need to go get the bag of guns first.

Back at camp Jim is mindlessly digging graves and freaking everyone the hell out. They try to intervention him, and tell him he’s scaring the kids. A clearly agitated Jim picks a fight with Shane and looses it for a little while. We learn that the only reason he was able to escape the Walkers was because they were too busy eating his wife and two sons. Harsh. After subduing him, Shane ties Jim to a tree while he calms down. Eventually he seems back to himself and apologizes for scaring the kids. He says he was digging because of something he’d dreamed, but he can’t remember what. And again, we get some really superb acting in this episode. Bravo, Andrew Rothenberg. He acted the hell out of this episode.

Back in Atlanta, Glenn proves to be the only intelligent one in the damn group by coming up with a freaking AMAZING plan to get the guns back. #teamglenn But here comes the part of the episode where Jach starts to loose it a little. Car zombie AAAH. Okay, okay, I’m breathing. Glenn gets the bag and Rick’s abandoned hat right around the time Daryl is confronted by a skinny teenager who starts yelling at the top of his lungs. Two of Skinny’s homies turn up and take Daryl down, but not before he shoots one of them in the ass with an arrow. Glenn turns back up with the guns, and the homies grab him and stuff him into a car before they take off. They leave Daryl, Skinny, and the guns behind just as Rick and T-Dog show up along with a friendly hoard of zombies. They escape back into the department store where they get a location from Skinny and they set out to get Glenn back. They have a brief showdown with the Vatos gang and their leader, Guillermo, who tells them to either come back with the bag of guns to trade for Glenn, or to come back “locked and loaded.” SHOCKINGLY, the guys pick the latter. They turn back up at the warehouse ready to start a gun-fight, and the Vatos respond in kind. Things look like they’re about to get messy when Abuela comes tottering in. The elderly grandmother of one of the Vatos, Abuela thinks Rick is there to arrest her grandson and pleads with him not to do so. Rick tells her that he’s only searching for a friend, and she happily volunteers to take him to Glenn. After leaving the warehouse, Rick realizes that the Vatos are actually protecting an assisted living center filled with the elderly. Abuela’s grandson, Felipe, was a nurse there, and Guillermo was the custodian. When the apocalypse happened, the staff left the residents to die. Felipe and Guillermo were the only two who stayed. Eventually they built up a gang to help protect the elderly. Touched, Rick offers Guillermo some of their guns and ammo, they get Glenn, and the group takes off back to their van. But it’s missing! Ruh roh. Seems like one-handed Merle stole the van and is heading back to camp with a little vengeance in mind.

Back at camp, Andrea is fussing because Amy’s birthday is the next day and she doesn’t have anything to wrap her sister’s present in. Abusive Ed looks like hell and is refusing to leave his tent, while the rest of the group settle in around the campfire to eat all the fish that Andrea and Amy caught. Everyone’s having a great time, which of course means that everything is now going to be ruined. Ed opens his tent to find Walkers outside. They attack him and now Abusive Ed is Dead Ed. Meanwhile, Amy had gotten up to use the bathroom and screams as a Walker rips out a chunk of her throat and my heart all at the same time. Walkers seem to come out of nowhere and descend down on the camp. The group scrambles to try and defend themselves and Rick, Daryl, T-Dog, and Glenn arrive in time to help. But it’s a little too late for Amy, Ed, and god only knows how many other people at the camp. Amy dies in a frantic Andrea’s arms, Jim remembers the graves from his dream, and I am slapped across the face with a reminder that absolutely no one is ever going to be safe on this show.

Opinion of the Episode:

I know I said last week’s episode was my favorite so far, but it might have just been dethroned. This was such an excellent episode, you guys. I can see why so many people have fallen in love with this show. The acting all around was pretty phenomenal. Jim, Andrea, Amy, and Guillermo were stand-outs, but honestly, everyone was really on point. And it was easy to see why with so much excellent back story and character development going on. It makes me both excited and terrified. There is nothing I love more than great character development, but it’s going to make me attached to everyone, and then my heart and soul will be crushed when they die. Because they will die. Oh yes. We’re on episode four and have just lost two semi-main characters. I am under no delusions that the characters I love are safe. This is like Westeros up in here. I should just prepare myself for a lot of heartache right now.

I felt like the first half of the episode jumped back and forth way too quickly. We’d get maybe a minute long scene at the camp, then we’d flash back over to Atlanta for a thirty second scene and then back again. It was giving me whiplash. But honestly, that’s really my only complaint for the entire episode. It really was fantastic to watch, and I’m just loving this show so much right now.

Also, let it be noted that I watched this episode at 11 o’clock at night, and despite some brief squirming with Glenn and the car zombie, I didn’t freak out! And there was no trouble falling asleep or nightmares afterward. I THINK I MAY BE DESENSITIZING MYSELF. HOORAY! Also also, I’ve noticed that absolutely no zombie survivors seem to wear glasses. I think this is a sign that come the apocalypse, I am completely screwed.

Under The Dome
June 24th @ 10pm
CBS has been promoting the heck out of this 13-episode miniseries since the Superbowl. No word on if it will live up to the hype, but it’s been a while since a network has launched a new scripted show to launch in the summer. Typically the networks save their big guns until the fall when people tend to spend more time in front of their TV. ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX have lost out on a ton of summer viewership to cable channels like AMC, HBO and Showtime who have capitalized on the viewer’s becoming sick of boring reality television and endless reruns. CBS seems to have finally caught on and are putting their money and efforts towards Under The Dome in order to gain back some of the viewership. Will it pay off? Under The Dome is described as a sci-fi horror series which follows a small town that is, for reasons unknown, sealed off from the rest of the world under an impenetrable barrier that surrounds the town. As the town begins to tear itself apart through panic, a small group of people attempt to maintain peace and order while also trying to uncover the truth behind the barrier and how to escape from it. Sound like a rip off of The Simpsons Movie? It’s actually based on a bestselling Stephen King novel of the same name. The miniseries has a very strong cast with Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight), and Mike Vogel (Bates Motel).

Dexter
June 30th @ 9pm
The final season for Dexter is almost upon us, and all of our are wondering what’s going to happen to our favourite serial killer. Will he die? Will he go to jail? Will he live happily ever after? In Season 8, his guilt ridden sister Deb begins to spiral out of control, not being able to handle what happened to LaGuerta. Charlotte Rampling will join this season as Dr. Evelyn Vogel, a new ally of Miami Metro. She is a nuero-psychiatrist that studies serial murderers, and if often referred to as a “psychopath whisperer.” Dexter is immediately suspicious of Dr. Vogel, but could this character be someone who helps Dexter overcome his dark passenger in the end? Kenny Johnson (Sons Of Anarchy, The Shield) has also joined Dexter’s final installment in a multi-episode arc playing U.S. Marshall Cooper. The Marshall is described as a no-nonsense and formidable lawman who is hired by P.I. Jacob Elway (recurring guest star Sean Patrick Flanery) to hunt down an infamous criminal. I don’t know about you, but as much as I love Dexter, the show needs to have a dramatic and bloody ending for the serial killer. Dexter lives by a code that every victim needs to be a killer and it’s especially important to hunt them down if they’re going to kill again. Will Dexter realize that he himself fits the code and ultimately take his own life?

Ray Donovan
June 30th @ 10pm
Set in the sprawling mecca of the rich and famous, Ray Donovan does the dirty work for LA’s top power players. The new one-hour series stars Liev Schreiber in his first lead television role as the go-to guy who makes the problems of the city’s celebrities, superstar athletes, and business moguls disappear. This powerful drama unfolds when his father Mickey, played by Jon Voight, is unexpectedly released from prison, setting off a chain of events that shakes the Donovan family to its core. The family is from Boston but Ray took them all to Los Angelas to get away from their criminal father. Elsewhere in the family, his wife Abby (Paula Malcomson) is desperately trying to be a part of the life that Ray leads but still does not fully understand who he works for, and adding to that strained relationship is Ray’s constant infidelity. Ray’s two brothers are also struggling with their new lives in LA, Terry (Eddie Marsan) is a former boxer now dealing with Parkinson’s disease and Bunchy (Dash Mihok), is dealing with addiction and depression caused by childhood demons. The Hollywood Reporter’s review said Ray Donovan was “the most testosterone-fueled, rough and intelligent drama in ages.” I’m excited about this one, and could be writing about it more in the future!

The Bridge
July 10th @ 9pm
The Bridge (based on the critically acclaimed Danish/Swedish drama “Bron”) is a present-day crime thriller exploring the tensions on the U.S.-Mexico border. When an American judge known for her anti-immigration views is found dead on the bridge connecting El Paso and Juarez, Sonya Cross (Diane Kruger) from El Paso PD must work with her Mexican counterpart from Chihuahua State Police, Marco Ruiz (Demian Bichir), to catch a serial killer operating on both sides of the border. Marco understands the slippery politics of Mexican law enforcement, and while his police force slowly succumbs to the pressures and demands of the cartel, he’s one of the last good men in the department. He’s charming, but also cunning as he will do whatever it takes to get what he needs. This does not sit well with Sonya, who has Asperger’s and strictly follows rules as well as protocol. Her candid and off-putting personality fuels an unforgiving drive for truth. The case quickly pulls them into a string of murders on the border, a scene already consumed by illegal immigration, drug trafficking, violence and prostitution.

Orange Is the New Black
All episodes available on Netflix on July 11th
From the creator of “Weeds”, and based on the memoir of the same name by Piper Kerman. Orange Is The New Black is Netflix most recent original “dramedy” set in a women’s prison. Piper Chapman’s (played by Taylor Schilling) wild past involving a drug runner comes back to haunt her, resulting in her arrest and detention in a federal penitentiary. To pay her debt to society, Piper trades her comfortable New York life for an orange prison jumpsuit and finds unexpected conflict and camaraderie amidst an eccentric group of inmates. Also starring in the series are Jason Biggs, Laura Prepon, Natasha Lyonne, Taryn Manning and Weeds alums Michael Harney and Pablo Schreiber. “It’s just like the Hamptons, only fucking horrible.” I love it already. Warning: Trailer below is NSFW.

Breaking Bad
August 11th @ 9pm
OH MY GOD! How could I not mention Breaking Bad?? Only eight episodes stand between us and the end of one of the greatest shows in television history. Creator Vince Gilligan described the finale as “victorious” and “satisfying” and has also long promised that Walter White’s (Bryan Cranston) actions must have consequences. That means he’s totally going to die right? Little else has been said about the final installment but whatever happens, I know we will all be glued to our televisions for those final eight episodes. I’m going to start a support group once it’s over for those of us who will be going through Jesse Pinkman withdrawals. Hit me up if you’re interested in joining, bitch!

To countless television watchers, James Gandolfini was Anthony John “Tony” Soprano, a capo in the Di

To countless television watchers, James Gandolfini was Anthony John “Tony” Soprano, a capo in the DiMeo crime family and the de facto boss in The Sopranos, a generational saga that aired on HBO from 1999-2007 and forever changed the face of TV drama.

Sopranos creator David Chase based his Tony Soprano character on real-life New Jersey crime boss Vincent “Vinny Ocean” Palermo, and that’s how Gandolfini played him: over the top, larger than life and given to wild mood swings.

In person, though, to those who met him and those who knew him, Gandolfini could not have been more different from the boisterous, tough-talking character he made famous, and infamous, on the small screen. Gandolfini was quiet, soft-spoken and could be painfully shy in public, as in July, 1999, when he won his first of three consecutive TV Critics Associations Awards for individual achievement in drama.

At the time, The Sopranos was unavailable in western Canada, owing to a HBO lawsuit against then Western International Communications-owned Superchannel over grey-market satellite signals. A then-reporter for the Vancouver Sun and a separate reporter from the Edmonton Journal, Richard Helm, followed Gandolfini onto the veranda at the Pasadena, Calif., Ritz Carlton Hotel, where Gandolfini was alone, clutching his statuette in the California night.

Told about the lawsuit and how viewers in western Canada could only see The Sopranos through a pirated satellite signal, Gandolfini said deadpan, in his best Soprano-esque voice, “Maybe I should move there to straighten them out.”

He was polite, but in no mood for small talk. When one of the reporters asked a follow-up question, Gandolfini looked mildly pained and said softly, “Hey, guys, can you give me a break?”

Nearly 10 years later, in 2008, a very different Gandolfini — older, wiser and with The Sopranos behind him — made a quiet entrance at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, at HBO’s portion of the semi-annual TV Critics Association press tour.

This time, he was there to promote a personal passion project, Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq, a documentary about the terrible injuries suffered by returning U.S. servicemen and women from the war in Iraq, and how they were adjusting to life back home.

Gandolfini, the film’s executive producer and most vocal backer when no one else wanted anything to do with it, was still a huge physical presence, but he insisted on remaining quiet while five injured U.S. Army veterans, four men and one woman, all interviewed in the film, took the stage and held their audience rapt with personal stories of war and recovery.

It was only a matter of time before Gandolfini was pressed to say something — anything — but when he did his voice was barely audible, a hushed whisper.

He wanted the veterans to have their say, and he didn’t much care if anyone else in the room thought him distant or standoffish.

“I went to Iraq,” he explained quietly, “because I was playing this tough guy on TV and I guess I wanted to meet a few real ones. I just thought . . . I was angry about the lack of attention that was being paid. I wanted to do something. There are plenty of people who have been to Iraq. I don’t want to sit here and, you know, take credit or something. There are a lot of entertainers and various people who go. I thought if I could just go there . . . I asked them. I said, ‘Is this really something that the soldiers do want? I don’t want to go for myself.’ They said, ‘Yeah, it takes their minds off certain things. It breaks the monotony.’ I thought it was the least that I could do.”

Asked a follow-up question from the room, Gandolfini returned to that California night years earlier.

“I’m sorry,” he said, simply but firmly. “Could you repeat the question for them?” he added, and nodded toward the veterans.

Gandolfini would have been annoyed if the veterans that day weren’t identified here by name. Jon Bartlett. Jay Wilkerson. Dawn Halfaker. Bryan Anderson. Dexter Pitts.

Gandolfini died in Rome, Italy, while on holiday, it was announced Wednesday. He was 51. He will be remembered, and rightly so, for The Sopranos. This much is true, though: He would also like to have been remembered for Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq.

I very recently had the opportunity to interview Hemlock Grove‘s Emily Piggford, who played the role of Ashley Valentine on the show. Ashley, fellow high school classmate of upir Roman Godfrey (Bill Skarsgard) and werewolf Peter Rumancek (Landon Liboiron), is one of many characters who end up inadvertently caught up in the web of the supernatural when a string of murders occur within town. The show, based on a novel of the same name by Brian McGreevy, is a Netflix Original Series produced by horror aficionado Eli Roth.

It was announced today that Hemlock Grove has officially been renewed for a second season!

This first thing that I actually wanted to be was a singer. I would also dance around a lot, to Enya and ABBA, Laura Branigan and Cyndi Lauper. I went through wanting to be a paleontologist, an author and a teacher as well—all that before I was eleven, then I discovered acting.

My grade five teacher thought I did well in the Christmas pageant and recommended I audition for a community theatre production of “The Three Pigs New Adventure” with Four Seasons Musical Theatre. I played a blue bird and remember my mom asking me in the car after rehearsal one night what I thought of acting.

By that point, I was still set on being a singer/songwriter and said maybe I would do acting on the side. This is a very vivid memory for me for some reason—I suppose it’s when the wheels really began to turn.

By the time we mounted the show and I saw how our work was affecting the audience, which was mainly children and their parents, I felt solidly taken with acting. It’s dress-up with a focus and philosophy, insight, examples, commentary, a moral, a warning, hope… I had always loved movies and doing imitations and dressing up, like any kid, really. I was very romantic. I’m so thankful that I get to hold onto all that and be a part of this exuberant, intellectual and instinctual profession.

I’m inspired by the nature of the industry itself, the possibilities it has on so many levels to affect change.

2) Internet entities such as Netflix and Amazon are starting to make original programming, attempting to compete with network and cable shows. What are your thoughts on this venture?

When I first received the email about auditioning for Hemlock Grove and saw that it was going to be a Netflix series, it somehow felt less official than it being a TV series that would be aired weekly. I wondered how established these new Netflix Original Series were, what sort of budget they had to work with and what sort of exposure they would receive. It is amazing how quickly my impressions changed and how I see now, after Hemlock and House of Cards, how astounding the production value is—the performances, the score, the effects and editing, directing—it is all top of the line, high-quality filmmaking, and these series essentially are like 13-hour long movies.

I wonder how many people still think of the original programming idea like I did at first. But it is a brilliant idea and I think if anyone either hasn’t checked it out or come around to it yet, they will. I also think that if someone has to choose between having cable or internet, they will choose internet, so the more series and movies that are available online and fresh, the better. I’m sure that Netflix and Amazon will continue to have success with their original programming.

I just got cable again recently and, before now, have had it very intermittently through my life. So for the last long while, I was only watching things online with Netflix or re-watching movies from my jumbo DVD collection and kind of embracing being disconnected from whatever was current, especially with TV shows. When I did have cable before, my schedule often didn’t allow me to watch what I wanted, (and I didn’t have PVR at the time, which IS amazing). I was so happy when I saw how many TV shows Netflix was starting to provide in addition to the growing movie library; I felt like I could catch up.

But with the original series it is even BETTER, because I don’t have to “catch up” on seasons that everyone else has already seen and moved on from and told me about… With the original series, a season is released there and only there and all at once. It’s not just convenient, it makes me feel like I’m in the loop again! (Marginally, I still haven’t watched Game of Thrones or Orphan Black or more than one episode of Homeland [which I just discovered is on Netflix!] etc., etc…SO MUCH TO SEE!)

3) In the short film Frost, you played the main character. I’ve heard that everything was filmed in front of a green screen. Do you feel that starring in a short film and having to imagine the world around you is more or less demanding than coming back to a recurring role week after week on a television show?

I love working on short films in general because of how concentrated the work is. I just shot a short zombie film directed by Will Pascoe called Detention and we took 3.5 hours of footage for a 7.5-minute film in only two days. That condensed timeline helps greatly with a sense of continuity and it also gives me less time to over-think.

We shot Frost over five straight days. I didn’t have any dialogue on set and most of my scenes were me alone, interacting with the inanimate environment and projecting the world that Jeremy (Jeremy Ball, our creator/director) indicated onto the green screens. All of this was quite freeing.

With Hemlock, it was wonderful and challenging to get to revisit Ashley Valentine over about four months and create an arc for her across that time, as well as work to make her interactions fuse naturally with the characters that have been there all the way through. I had to be very aware of how the characters she met with had been conveyed so far in the show and also aware of the tone or style that the series had established for itself, to make sure my performance fit in. In that sense, there were more factors outside of my control with Hemlock that I formed my performance around. With Frost, I was a little more free to establish the world and the role myself and I did really enjoy that.

4. In one of your final appearances on the show, your character states that she feels like she was a bitch toward Bill Skarsgard’s character, Roman. I’ve noticed some commenters online suggested that this scene was used as a cop out for Roman’s behavior—that it excused what he did. What is your take on that?

Ashley’s remorse and sweetness later is not meant to excuse Roman, but, in fact, lead the audience to do the opposite. Before Roman leaves her that night, he commands her to forget the rape and that he was ever there. His powers are successful to the point where she actually makes him an elaborate “get well” card when he’s in a coma and she still holds onto this little crush for him. It’s meant to feel unjust and sickening that she has forgotten what has happened and also actually still likes him. The entire rape-altercation shows how little Roman thinks of himself. He damages himself constantly, but also raping Ashley is one of the first times we see him inflict harm and his self-hate onto someone else. We see the dark acts that he is capable of and it makes us wonder what else he will do or has done.

5. What are some of your future projects?

I did my first guest spot on a sitcom! It’s called Spun Out and I understand it’s the first Canadian sitcom with a live audience since about 1989. It’s a fantastic, funny, well directed, written and acted show set in a PR office. It airs on CTV this fall, I believe. I also just shot that short film, Detention, which is funded by Bravo and can be described as Breakfast Club with zombies. It’s actually a tidbit from a feature idea. Will Pascoe co-wrote and directed, Eric Johnson co-wrote and acted. It will be completed in the fall and available online through Bravo. Hopefully we get to work on the feature before too long. Same with Frost (though the feature would be called Polaris.)

I’m in a wait-and-see zone now: Spun Out and Detention will be available in the fall, an animated short I contributed my voice to, Cloudrise, (directed/animated by Denver Jackson,) will be available soon, Frost is still going around to festivals, so I hope to make it to at least one of those, and we’re also waiting to see if Hemlock Grove gets the second season it deserves. Hopefully Ashley Valentine will be back if they do. In the meantime I’m just going to get back into yoga and dance and catch up on all those shows I wanna watch!
