Oscar Swartz har sått fröet om en kampanj mot Telia, för att sätta press på dem att förhala inkopplingen av kablarna till FRA.

Det är bråttom eftersom inkopplingen är planerad till 1 december.

Det är nu oerhört viktigt att vi alla, omedelbart, gör oss hörda gentemot Telia och förklarar vilka förväntningar vi har på företaget som dess kunder (eller presumtiva kunder).

Tveka inte att ringa, skriva brev eller e-posta till nyckelpersoner inom Telia.

[qi:083] A large group of carriers and equipment makers yesterday came out in support of a standard called One Voice to provide voice over the next-generation Long Term Evolution mobile networks. For those adopting the standard, LTE mobile calls would become VoIP calls. The standard is necessary to ensure you can call people on 3G networks from a 4G network and across different providers, and reduces the complexity of making that happen. 4G networks are all IP-based, while voice calls are still routed over circuit-switched networks, which could cause communication problems. Figuring out how to deliver circuit-switched calls on a packet network was going to result in compromises and costs I detailed back in April.

So enter AT&T, Orange, Telefonica, TeliaSonera, Verizon, Vodafone, Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nokia, Samsung Electronics, and Sony Ericsson, which are all stepping behind the One Voice effort that will use a standard version of the IMS framework to route voice calls between the IP and circuit-switched networks. It’s easy to understand why the equipment makers are behind this — they’ve been trying to sell IMS gear for years, and because most of the carriers involved have their own IP-based wireless network they’ve already got their own IMS equipment.

However, a few notable players are missing from the One Voice effort, such as T-Mobile and some of the Chinese carriers. There is also still the question of when these standards will actually be implemented and, thus, able to be deployed in the network. Verizon plans to have its LTE network covering 100 million people by the end of next year, and AT&T will start trials at that time as well. Given that yesterday’s announcement was the beginning of a process that could take a year or longer to cement, we’re still going to need an interim solution if carriers want to provide voice on LTE networks.

This standard shows that voice over LTE is finally a big issue for carriers, said Steven Shaw, VP of marketing for Kineto, which is part of a competing LTE voice effort called VoLGA. He denied that One Voice obviates the need for VoLGA given how long it will take for a standard to be ratified and implemented. Carriers can use VoLGA in the meantime, he notes, which would generate revenue for Kineto. Regardless, getting big industry players to get a standards effort rolling is a key step for those who want 4G handsets — even if they won’t be out in 2011.

När den nya receptionen för TeliaSoneras huvudkontor vid Stureplan i Stockholm behövde en ny skylt valde man Clarex som leverantör.

TeliaSoneras nya reception lilgger där det tidigare låg en en mobilbutik (konkurerande Hi3G) och ett café.

Det blir en matt blästrad 20mm homogen vit akrylskylt med utfräst logotype. Skylten accentruerar deras profil och är framtagen för att överenstämma med karaktären och lokalens utformning. Redan utifrån från Sturplan kommer skylten att synas väl vilket gjorde att kunden hade extra höga krav på att allt blir perfekt.

Att tillverka en skylt till TeliaSoneras huvudkontor är självklart ett prestigeuppdrag och visar att våra kunder har förtroende för Clarex och litar på att vi levererar ett bra resultat. Bilden ovan visar det fotomontage som gjordes på skylten.

TeliaSonera vill inte längre underhålla sitt stora nät för fast telefoni. Kunder som bor ute på landet får sin telefon avstängd. I detta monopol går det inte att byta operatör då stolparna kommer att tas bort. Detta drabbar i hög utsträckning äldre personer.

DN nämner Årjäng, Vetlanda och Flen som avfolkningsbyggder där det inte kommer att byggas ut något bredband. Finns det täckning får folk nöja sig med GSM och kanske 3G för internet trafik. Själv bor jag i glesbyggden där 3G funkar högst sporadiskt. Bredband kan man inte kalla det. Knappt ens smalband.

Den digitala klyftan mellan stad och landsbyggd ökar. Regeringen vill att 90 % av hushållen skall ha tillgång till 100 Mbit vid utgången av år 2020.

Folket i Årjäng vill nog helst ha tillbaka sin telefon.

Ola Larsmo följer upp sin granskning av Teliasoneras förehavanden i Belarus (Vitryssland). Genom ett aktuellt beslut i en skiljedomstol har Teliasonera blivit tilldömt ägarmajoritet i dotterbolaget Turkcell, det vill säga det bolag som samarbetar direkt med den belarusiska staten.

Därmed faller också det försvarsargument som Teliasonera anförde i våras, när affärerna i Belarus uppmärksammades och ifrågasattes i Svenska Dagbladet.  Så här sa Teliasoneras kommunikationsdirektör Cecilia Edström då:

“Vi sitter i styrelsen för Turkcell som tar beslut om investeringar men vi har ingen egen majoritet. De dagliga besluten tas av Turkcells operativa ledning.”

Nu har Teliasonera alltså snart egen majoritet. Då handlar det inte längre bara om att blunda för sina affärspartners omoraliska beteende  (vilket är illa nog!), utan istället om att själv vara högsta ansvarig för det.

Precis som Larsmo påpekar äger svenska staten i sin tur 37 % av aktierna i Teliasonera. Tillsammans med finska staten har man till och med en majoritet av aktierna.  Kanske läge för den svenska och finska regeringen att agera gemensamt? Eller tycker man att det är helt i sin ordning att kritisera förtrycket och samtidigt hjälpa det på traven?

Ukraine’s telecommunications sector is, potentially at least, in line for a major shake up, with plans to privatise a controlling stake in state-owned landline operator Ukrtelecom. Proposals to sell off Ukrtelecom have been around since the 1990s, with different formulas and percentages being floated at various times, along with varying assessments of the company’s net worth.

In the latest version of the plan to privatise Ukrtelecom, an open joint-stock company that holds a 70% market share of local landline operations, the government has proposed selling off it’s block stake of 67.79% of Ukrtelecom’s shares. Currently, the state has a 92.79% stake in the company, with the company’s employees holding a further 7.14%.

The government’s plan, announced in February by the State Property Fund (SPF), initially foresaw the privatisation process beginning in March, though this did not take place, casting some doubt on the timeframe for the sale.

Although it did not meet its own deadline to start the process, the government has recently put Ukrtelecom back on the agenda. During a visit to South Korea in mid-July, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko called South Korean firms to place a bid for Ukrtelecom,as she pushes to attract Asian investment into the Ukrainian economy. This is part of a wider drive by Timoshenko to privatise a number of state owned assets, including 5 regional energy companies.

However, the government may have missed the boat if it is hoping for a substantial cash windfall from the sale of Ukrtelecom, with the company’s overall value having slipped badly in the past year. The stake in the company that is to be sold off was estimated to be worth around $3bn in 2008; current pricing puts it at around $940m, mainly due to the sharp fall in the local currency.

Its attractiveness as an asset has not been helped by Ukrtelecom recording a $194m loss last year, compounded by a further $32m worth of red ink in the ledger for the first quarter of 2009, a turn around from a net profit of $33m at current rates in 2007.

More likely to give potential suitors pause than the telco’s financial statements is the political cloud that hangs over the proposed privatisation, with President Viktor Yushchenko staunchly opposed to the sale. In February, after the plan to privatise Ukrtelecom was unveiled, a senior official of the president’s office said Yushchenko would do everything possible to block the sale.

Yushchenko and Tymoshenko, formerly close allies, are at loggerheads over numerous issues, including management of the faltering economy, combating corruption & ties with Russia. Having repeatedly blamed the Tymoshenko-led government of failing to protect the economy and the Ukrainian people from the fall out of the global financial crisis, it is no surprise that the president has opposed the sale of Ukrtelecom.

According to the SPF, there are at least 10 companies interested in bidding for the Ukrtelecom stake, though this assessment was made in March, and could be optimistic given the present variable political and economic climate. “Climate change” notwithstanding, one interested party is Turkey’s largest mobile phone operator, Turkcell (NYSE:TKC) which already has a presence in the Ukrainian telecoms sector, owning a controlling interest in Astelit, the country’s third-largest mobile services provider, which services 20% of the mobile market.

In mid-February, as discussions over the privatisation of Ukrtelecom again gained momentum, Turkcell’s chief executive officer, Sureyya Ciliv, said his firm was considering making a bid for the landline operator.

“It is an interesting situation but we need to understand the terms of the deal, and our teams are studying that. Based on the study, we will make a decision if we are a serious interested party who is willing to bid.”

What could be of more interest for Turkcell & the Ukrainian goovernment, is TeliaSonera looking at gaining a greater stake in Turkcell. The Swedish multi-national is eager to penetrate new markets in Eurasia & already has a growing fibre network building out in Ukraine. My view is that this has a greater chance of success than courting Asian investors to come into the Ukranian market, time will tell.

Industrispionage kallas det i andra branscher….

“- Swetorrents tillhandahåller upphovsrättsskyddade filmer som de inte har rättighet att sprida på internet. I vissa fall gäller det filmer som inte ens har kommit ut på marknaden. När det gäller äldre filmer, så kan jag förstå att det finns/funnits möjligheter för de som vill komma över en kopia att få tag på den och använda denna kopia tvärt emot de regler och lagar som finns, men NYA FILMER som ännu inte kommit ut på marknaden? För det är väl inte frågan om en medveten provokation eftersom provokation till att någon begår brott i sig är ett brott enligt svenska lagar. Under alla förhållanden BORDE väl filmbolagen städa hemma först och kolla upp HUR filmerna kommer ut innan de finns på marknaden???????

YIT (+14%) ja TeliaSonera (+8%) olivat pörssin suurten yhtiöiden listalla kaksi parhaiten noussutta osaketta perjantaina. YIT:n imussa kolmantena oli Uponor (+5.8%).

YIT:llä oli kovasti positiivista kerrottavaa. Muutamia poimintoja:

• Asuntokauppa vilkastui selvästi Suomessa ja Venäjällä. Myyntivarantomme pieneni ja kasvatimme suoraan kuluttajille suunnattujen asuntokohteiden aloituksiasijoittajille myytyjen vuokratalokohteiden lisäksi
• YIT myi Suomessa ensimmäisen kvartaalin aikana 436 asuntoa ja toisen kvartaalin aikana 896 asuntoa. Kesäkuun lopussa myynnissä oli rakenteilla tai valmiina 834 asuntoa, kun vastaava luku maaliskuun lopussa oli 921
• Venäjällä asuntomyyntimme vilkastui kevään edetessä. Ensimmäisellä kvartaalilla myimme 323 asuntoa ja toisella kvartaalilla 494 asuntoa. Asuntojen suuri tarve jatkuu, mutta niiden tarjonta on markkinoilla vähentynyt. YIT rakentaa valmiiksi kaikki aloittamansa kohteet
• YIT-konsernin liikevaihto oli huhti-kesäkuussa 4 prosenttia suurempi ja liikevoitto 72 prosenttia suurempi kuin tammi-maaliskuussa
• Operatiivinen kassavirta investointien jälkeen vahvistui ja oli toisen kvartaalin aikana 27,8 milj. euroa
• YIT Oyj arvioi, että vuonna 2009 konsernin liikevaihto laskee selvästi vuoteen 2008 verrattuna, mutta tulos ennen veroja on selvästi positiivinen
• Tilauskanta kauden lopussa oli 2 916,4 milj. euroa (3 670,4 Me) eli 21 prosenttia pienempi kuin vuotta aiemmin

Näyttäisi siltä että ajoissa aloitettu jarrutus (uusien asuntojen aloitukset jäihin ja kiinteitä kustannuksia on jo laskettu vuositasolla noin 60 milj. eurolla) firmalla onnistuu ja tulos pystymään pitämään tänäkin vuonna kohtuullisena. Syksyllä tosin tullaan vielä mittaamaan asuntokaupan tila kun työttömyys tulee kasvamaan vielä uusien irtisanomisten myötä. Historiallisen alhaiselle tasolle laskenut korkotaso tukee kysyntää. Marraskuun 2008 3.7 euron pohjista on tultu 150% ylös nykyiselle 9.18 euron tasolle. Ehrnrootit ja muut YIT oikea-aikaisesti tankanneet ovat jo nyt tehneet hienon tilin ja tulevaisuudessa vielä paremman + päälle vielä tulevaisuuden isot osinkovirrat. Harmittaa etten itse tankannut. Marraskuussa 2008 eli juuri pohjien aikaan osinkohistoria tarkasteltuani ja analysoituani YIT oli selvä ostokandidaatti. Samoin joulukuun lopulla arvelin että YIT olisi hyvä osake vuodelle 2009. Toivottavasti joku juttuni perusteella innostui tutkimaan firmaa ja ostamaan sitä. Itse en lopulta sitten ostanut No ehtisihän sitä vieläkin ostaa mutta paljon, paljon halvemmalla sitä olisi saanut viime vuoden lopulla ja vielä tämän vuoden alussakin. Ehrnrootien tulo ostolaidalle olo myös selvä ostosignaali. Tuon suvun ostoksia kannattaa yleensä peesailla.

YIT ja analyytikkojen arvailuissa oleva rakennusbisneksen elpyminen vei mukanaan Uponorin selvään nousuun. Uponor onkin noussut jo melkein voitolle salkussani.

TeliaSonera raportoi hyvät luvut. Bisnes näyttää olevan elpymässä. Muutamia poimintoja:

• Liikevaihto kasvoi 8,7 prosenttia 27 478 milj. Ruotsin kruunuun (25 274)
• Paikallisissa valuutoissa ja ilman yritysostoja laskettuna säästötoimien kohteena olevat kustannukset pienenivät 5,8 prosenttia
• Käyttökate ennen kertaluonteisia eriä kasvoi 13,3 prosenttia 9 043 milj. kruunuun (7 978), ja käyttökateprosentti kasvoi 32,9 prosenttiin (31,6).
• Liiketulos ennen kertaluonteisia eriä kasvoi 10,3 prosenttia 8 176 milj. kruunuun (7 410).
• Vapaa kassavirta kasvoi 3 499 milj. kruunuun (2 471)
• Liittymien määrä kasvoi vuosineljänneksen aikana yli 2,4 miljoonalla ja oli 139,4 miljoonaa. Enemmistöomisteisissa yhtiöissä liittymämäärä kasvoi 0,9 miljoonalla ja osakkuusyhtiöissä 1,5 miljoonalla liittymällä
• Tulevaisuudessa odotamme ponnisteluidemme säästötoimien kohteena olevien kustannusten ja käyttöomaisuusinvestointien pienentämiseksi kompensoivan laskevan BKT:n ja kasvavan työttömyyden negatiiviset vaikutukset yhtiön markkina-alueilla. Siksi olemmekin nostaneet konsernin kehitysnäkymiä käyttökateprosentin osalta ja odotamme sen olevan korkeampi vuonna 2009 kuin vuonna 2008.

Mitäpä tuohon oikein lisäämään? Lamankestävää bisnestä se on tuo operaattoribisnes. Heikko kruunu on toki auttanut liikevaihdon ja – tuloksen kasvatuksessa kruunuina. Pitkään olen tämän firman osakkeiden ostamista miettinyt mutta en ole ostanut. Olisiko kannattanut? Olisihan se sillä kurssi on noussut maaliskuun noin kolmesta eurosta nykyiseen 4.48 euroon. Osinkoja TeliaSonera maksaa ihan hyvin ja se on edelleen potentiaalinen ostokohde isoimmille operaattoreille. Vieläkö kannattaa ostaa? Vuoden 2007 huiput olivat selvästi yli 7 euroa. Tulevassa nousukaudessa ne tullaan ylittämään ja joka vuosi tulee kasvavia osinkoja. Eli kyllä sitä edelleenkin kannattaa ostaa.

Femtocell Industry Awards 2009

The winners of the Femto Forum’s inaugural Femtocell Industry Awards were announced at a dazzling gala dinner.  ip.access picked up awards for the nano3G picocell / enterprise femtocell (in the design and technology innovation category) and for our Facebook virtual fridge notes demo (in the femtocell service category).  Other award winners included NEC, Sprint, Cellcom, picoChip, SoftBank, and individual awards for Taka Yoshizawa and Chris Fenton.

ABI forecasts 366,000 picocells by 2013

ABI Research estimates that in 2013, there will have been cumulative deployments of about 366,000 picocells worldwide, representing 38% CAGR from 2008.  ABI recently published separate reports on picocells and “super-femtocells”, with a higher forecast for the latter.  However, in practice it’s not clear whether there is any distinction between picocells and super-femtocells.

Percello shows PRC6000

At the Femtocells World Summit, Percello demonstrated live calls on their PRC6000 chip using a Ubiquisys AP.  Yoav Volloch (one of the industry’s great enthusiasts) took me up to the Percello demo suite, where the 16-user PRC6500 was also on display.  Yoav showed me 8 simultaneous calls and HSDPA at 9.4 Mbps, with software for the demos provided by Node H.

Texas Instruments announced femto silicon

Texas Instruments has unveiled two new femtocell chipsets based on scaled down macro basestation DSPs.  The new residential femto DSP is a dual-core processor that can support eight simultaneous users, while the enterprise femto architecture is a triple-core DSP supporting up to 32 simultaneous calls.  Caroline Gabriel gives a great analysis here.

Ubiquisys announces picocell

Ubiquisys has announced their G3 enterprise femtocell (i.e. picocell), based on Percello’s Aquilo PRC6000 chip.  The G3 will support up to eight simultaneous users and HSPA+ data at 21.6  /5.7 Mbps.  There will also be a future version supporting up to 16 users (based on the PRC6500 chip).  Shipments of the G3 femtocell will start from Q4 2009.

Grupul Suedez TeliaSonera si-a anuntat prezenta in Romania, prin stabilirea unui punct  la Bucuresti. Extinderea face parte din strategia operatorului de a intra in primii 3 transportatori IP din lume.

TeliaSonera este unul din cei mai mari jucatori in sectorul telecom, fiind ofertata anul trecut de catre France Telecom (Orange) pentru 33 miliarde Euro.

Pasakysite, kad Lietuvoje 4 kartos (4G) mobilusis ryšys jau veikia (bent jau taip reklamuojasi mobiliojo interneto tiekėjai „Mezon“), tačiau pirmoji komercinė 4 kartos ryšio bazinė stotis išbandyta Stokholme tik gegužės pabaigoje. „Ericsson“ sukurtą bazinę stotį išbandė didžiausia Švedijos telekomunikacijų bendrovė „TeliaSonera“. „Telia“, kartu su JAV „Verizon“, yra viena iš nedaugelio mobiliojo ryšių operatorių,  paskelbusių apie ketinimus kurti 4G tinklą, sukurtą LTE (Long Term Evolution) technologijos pagrindu. Jau pats pavadinimas sako, kad tai bus tiesiog gerokai patobulinta 3G įranga, o visas smagumas slypės informacijos perdavimo greičiuose.

Nors „Telia“ skelbia prijungusi 4G stotį prie IP tinklo, komerciniais tikslais jis negalės būti naudojamas iki 2010 metų kol bus pradėti gaminti specialūs modemai. Tokios pat žinios ir iš „Verizon“. Na, bet verta laukti, žinant, jog šis ryšys bus 10 kartų spartesnis nei dabartinio mobilaus 3G tinklo. Tai yra nuo dabartinių 6-10 megabitų pereisime prie 60-100 Mbps. Kita vertus, tai tikrai ne riba.

„Verizon“ planuoja iki 2015 metų 4G įdiegti visose JAV  valstijose. O toje pačioje Švedijoje norvegų „Telenor“ – „TeliaSonera“ konkurentas – jau suka kritikos sulaukusią reklamą, kurioje skelbiasi, kad jų 4G technologijos tinklas apims 99 proc. Švedijos namų ūkių, ir jų ryšys bus 80-150 Mbps. Šiuos pažadus Švedijos radijo technologas Jens Zander vadina nerealiais. „Telenor“ reklama prasidėjo savaitę prieš tai kai Švedijoje buvo priimtas bendras sutarimas, jog bus skelbiami tik maksimalūs realūs interneto greičiai, o ne maksimalūs teoriški skaičiai, kurie gali klaidinti vartotojus. Apskritai, telekomunikacijų ekspertai pradeda kalbėti apie tai, kad „kartų“ karas yra nenaudingas pačiai industrijai, nes dar nespėjus atsipirkti didžiulėms investicijoms į ankstesnės kartos mobiliojo ryšio infrastruktūrą, pinigai kišami į naujoves. Na, man, kaip vartotojui, tokia įvykių eiga visai patinka.

Beje, „Verizon“ ryšys skirsis tuo, jog 4G technologijai bus naudojamas 700 MHz bangų spektras. Jis leis vienai bazinei stočiai aprėpti beveik penkis kartus didesnį plotą nei švediškas ryšys, kuris veikia 3.6 GHz spektro bangų ruože. Taigi, bent jau teoriškai, amerikiečiams infrastruktūra kainuos gerokai pigiau.

Ericsson and TeliaSonera have made public the world’s primary commercial Long-Term Evolution (LTE) site in Stockholm, Sweden – a vital landmark in making the mobile digital highway a certainty. LTE will change the mobile-broadband user experience, offering the ultra-high data speeds required for uses for example internet TV, mobile video blogging, on-line video games as well as the mobile office setting.

The site will be component of a viable system planned to go live in 2010, bringing data rates greatly in excess of what is achievable in present day mobile broadband systems as well as permitting Stockholmers to remain attached and take pleasure in flawless, high-quality, online services even while on the go.

The second High Level Conference of ETNO (European Telecommunications Network Operators’ Association), members of which are world’s leading telecommunication companies, is organized in Istanbul and hosted by Türk Telekom

Türk Telekom hosted top executive members of ETNO (European Telecommunications Network Operators’ Association), which plays an important role in shaping the future of telecom sector, in Istanbul. ETNO realized its 2nd High Level Conference and Board Meeting in Çırağan Palace, Istanbul, hosted by Türk Telekom.

Besides the top executives of ETNO members, which are leading telecom companies of the world, more than 100 telecommunication professionals including regulation, strategy and business development managers attended the meeting.

“Access in Information Society” and “Universal Services” was the key topics of the conference entitled “Connecting Europe in the Digital Age”. Other topics of telecommunication sector like broadband, IP communication, wireless devices, next generation access, convergence and next generation networks have also been evaluated.

Commenting about the conference which determines the agenda of world telecommunication sector, Türk Telekom General Manager Dr. Paul Doany stated that as a founding member of ETNO, Türk Telekom played an important role by building a bridge that carries regulation issues of Turkey to EU, and decisions of EU to Turkey by hosting this conference. Doany said: “As Türk Telekom, we are glad to host the High Level Conference of ETNO. As one of the founding members, it is a pleasure for us to play an effective role in ETNO working groups. Turkey will benefit from hosting important guests from the global telecommunication sector in Istanbul, and evaluation of important issues in Istanbul. Founded in 1992, ETNO has 42 biggest fixed line operators from 36 European countries as members and Türk Telekom is one of the founding members. Besides Türk Telekom, there are British Telecom, Deutsche Telekom, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Finnet, France Telecom, Telenor and TeliaSonera which are the leading telecom operators of the world as members of ETNO. ETNO has also giant telecommunication companies as observers such as AT&T, Telstra and Verizon.

Vodafone explores metro femto

Vodafone has been experimenting with outdoor deployment of LTE metro femtocells.  The company’s head of new technologies and innovation Andy Dunkin says that the concept is strong, but requires a low cost solution for wireless backhaul at 50-100 Mbps.

Femtocells and the consumer electronics industry

Fierce Wireless wonders whether femtocells could bring the large consumer electronics companies into conflict with mobile operators.  It’s all a question of whose brand goes on the box in the home.  Fierce Wireless editor Paul Rasmussen says that “any attempts by the mobile community to enter the consumer femtocell market could be threatened by the emergence of well-known and accepted CE brands” – in other words, people might want to see their femtocells branded Sony or Toshiba (both of which recently joined the Femto Forum) rather than Vodafone or AT&T.

Providing evidence in support of the carrier branded model, 2Wire and Thomson (both of whom make white label CPE with the carrier’s brand on the box) this week reported an increase in their share of WiFi equipment sales at the expense of consumer brands such as Netgear.  In practice the pattern emerging in the femtocell market is for joint branded products such as the Samsung / Sprint AIRAVE.

TeliaSonera re-launches UMA service

TeliaSonera has improved and re-launched its “Home Free” UMA service, including a homezone tariff option.  However, analyst firm Ovum believes that Home Free will have “limited long-term impact” because of the inadequate choice of UMA handsets, and that femtocells are “likely to be a more viable solution”.  In fact, TeliaSonera itself said a while ago that it plans to swap the underlying technology for Home Free from UMA over to femtocells at some point.  According to Johan Wickman, senior VP for mobility R&D, “for Home Free, UMA is a first step – femtocells are the next step.”

UMA Today maintains an optimistic stance with the headline: “UMA dominates, reports Infonetics”.  Digging further into the Infonetics report, a key finding is actually a significantly decreasing market share for UMA.  In-Stat also recently reported that femtocells are set to dominate the market for in-building coverage.

If magicJack launches a femtocell I’ll eat my trousers

magicJack is a US VoIP service of somewhat dubious reputation.  Its key innovation is a USB dongle with a jack for a regular fixed line phone.  To make VoIP calls you plug the fixed line phone into the dongle and plug the dongle into an Internet connected PC.  Simple.  Now there are reports that magicJack is building a GSM femtocell into the dongle so that you can use a mobile phone instead of the fixed phone.  Engadget and Think Femtocell express surprise at how this can be possible – for example, magicJack owns no spectrum and doesn’t have a mobile core network – but they stop short of saying this is nonsense.  So I will say it.  It’s complete nonsense.  Whatever magicJack is planning to launch, it won’t be a femtocell.

Indoor mobile data explosion

Speaking at the Next Generation Networks conference in Bath this week, Analysys Mason analyst Terry Mason said that by 2015, 75% of mobile traffic will be generated indoors, and 95% of that traffic will be data.  By then we’ll be seeing a 10x increase in traffic and a 7x fall in revenue per MB compared to 2008 levels.

The growing gap between mobile data volumes and revenues was highlighted in AT&T’s results reported this week.  Despite a massive 1.6 million iPhone activations in the first quarter of 2009, for the first time in a long while AT&T reported less than 50% growth in data revenues.

Also speaking at the Bath conference, Qualcomm’s director of technical marketing Rasmus Hellberg suggested that the answer is to “bring transmitters closer to the user” by the introduction of operator-deployed picocells and user-deployed femtocells to give increased capacity and coverage. “Femtocells increase capacity 10X beyond what [HSPA+] technology alone could provide”, said Hellberg.

Airvana publishes its femtocell data performance study

Airvana has published details of its study comparing EVDO performance of femtocells with the macro network inside home.  The research finds that on average the available broadband data rates with femtocells are over five-times better than with macro cells.

Sweden is fast becoming the epicenter of the LTE universe, with three of the country’s four major wireless carriers — Tele2, Telenor and TeliaSonera — racing to build 4G wireless networks. These carriers bought spectrum in the 2.6 GHz band in 2008 and are looking to roll out LTE networks by 2010, according to Wireless Intelligence, a market research service. According to some estimates, mass deployment for LTE will happen around 2012.

TeliaSonera has plans to do a commercial rollout next year starting with Sweden’s capital of Stockholm. Rivals Tele2 and Telenor are jointly building a network with service due to launch by the end of 2010, covering 99 percent of Sweden by 2013. This service will have speeds of up to 80Mb/s in rural areas and up to 150Mb/s in urban areas. 3 Sweden and Intel (s intc) also own spectrum in the 2.6 GHz band but have not announced related plans just yet.

I’ve long been fascinated by the mobile broadband growth in Scandinavian countries, especially Sweden. Nearly 30 percent of Swedish mobile subscribers are using higher-speed versions of 3G wireless broadband. According to Swedish regulator estimates, during the first half of 2008, nearly 4,111 terabytes of data was transferred — or roughly 47MB a day per mobile broadband subscriber, on average — and accounted for $2.3 billion in mobile revenues.

We are beginning to see some of the same trends unfold here in the U.S.. I think that as we start to transition to better networks and better data-oriented wireless devices, we’ll see a big leap in mobile data usage over 3G networks. AT&T (s T) in particular should take note — in addition to promising us an LTE network, they need to upgrade their backhaul networks.

MetroPCS is planning to launch its LTE service next year, and Verizon (s vz) is racing to showcase LTE in a handful of markets later this year, though we have doubts if that will happen.

Ihan hyvät taantuma-ajan luvut ja toki TS toimii alalla joka ei ole niin taantumaherkkä. Kurssia laski ilmeisesti ennustepäivitys jonka mukaan liikevaihto ei kasva tänä vuonna. Tuloksen odotetaan pysyvän suht. ennallaan. Kyllä TS:ssä on potentiaalia erityisesti jos yritysostospekulaatiot tästä viriää. Mutta näen tälle hetkellä niin monta houkuttelevampaa ostokohdetta että taitaa TS:n ostaminen jäädä.

Tele2 och Telenor kommer tillsammans att bygga upp ett 4G-nät, och utmanar främst TeliaSonera som just nu har påbörjat att bygga ett 4G-nät. Konkurrens är bra, för egentligen alla parter. Konkurrens pressar priserna och tvingar fram bättre tjänster och produkter. Telia ser positivt på konkurrenternas besked, då det kommer att påskynda framtagandet av modem som stödjer 4G-tekniken.

Vi ska dock inte räkna med ett fast pris, betala en summa och surfa hur mycket du vill. Istället kommer användarna troligtvis få betala för den kapacitet som de använder. Jag tror dock inte att det här gör något. Alla användare behöver inte en oändlig mängd datatrafik, men alla kan dra nytta av hastigheten. Slowmove har en intressant idé om hur prissättningen borde se ut.

Att Telia och Tele2 samarbetat runt uppbyggnaden av ett 3G nät känner ju många till, och att Telenor och Tre delar ett annat nät för 3G täckning är kanske också bekant. För nästa generations mobilnät, 4G, skapar man nya konstellationer. Telenor och Tele2 aviserar att man tillsammans lansera sitt 4G nät, även om den slutliga tidpunkten för utrullning inte än är spikad. Målet är att bygga ett kraftfullare nät än Teliasonera och att täcka 99 % av befolkningen med en hastighet på 80 Mbit/s år 2013, med en kapacitet i storstäderna på upp mot 150 Mbit/s. Tre har fortfarande för avsikt att fortsätta utveckla 3G tekniken enligt dem själva, något som kanske ändras inom kort.

Nokiaa saattaa nostaa AT&T myyntilistoilleen ottama uusi E71x joka on E71:sta kehitetty ja entistä ohuempi musta versio (maailman ohuin älyluuri). Eiköhän tuo boostaa Nokian markkinaosuutta siellä, sen verran hyvin tuo E71 on menestynyt.

TeliaSonera nousi aika reippaasti tänään. Yhtiön uskotaan hankkivan Turkcellin enemmistö nyt vihdoin itselleen ja huomennahan siitä taitaa irrota osinko. Osinkoja hamuavat saattoi olla hyvinkin tuon nousun takana. Päivän nousija kuitenkin oli Nordea, peräti 15%. Fortum painui edelleen, tänään 5%. Anyway markkina tuntuu normalisoituneen ja kyllä tässä nousumarkkina nyt haisee. Katsotaan nyt jääkö bear-markkinaralliksi mutta nautitaan niin kauan kuin kestää. Kaikki nousu otetaan
