Temporary Tattoos - A Fun Way to Express Yourself

What many people worry about when it comes to getting a tattoo is being able to choose a design that you can permanently live with literally for the rest of their lives. Tattoos are very popular, so for those who are not ready to commit, there are some alternatives. If you are curious about how you will look with a tattoo, there are a few different options in temporary tattoos. The differences in these options are in how they are applied and how long they last. Temporary tattoos are just that – temporary. They are only called “tattoos” because they mimic the look of real tattoos. A real tattoo is one made with tattoo ink which is pushed down to the middle layers of the skin through the use of needles in a tattoo machine. The ink remains in the skin permanently when it is done properly.

Temporary Tattoos

Temporary tattoos are made from a thin plastic which adheres to the surface layer of your skin. These “tattoos” will stay on the skin for about three to five days. After about three days, the temporary tattoo will begin to slowly peel away. If you want to remove them before they wash off, a temporary tattoo can easily be wiped off with baby oil or rubbing alcohol. The wearer can make them last longer by not allowing water to continuously run on them when showering and by gently patting them dry instead of rubbing them with a towel.

Henna Tattoos

Henna body tattoos, on the other hand, can last up to several weeks on average. The ink comes from a plant which is ground up into a paste and mixed with other herbs and oils plus tea or coffee to darken the color. The paste is then applied or painted onto the skin in the desired tattoo design or pattern and then coated with a special glaze which creates an endothermic reaction to make the henna tattoo last even longer. The henna ink leaves an orange or reddish brown colored stain on the skin which penetrates deeper than just the surface layer. As the skin renews itself and sloughs off its dead layers, the stain of the henna tattoo will fade gradually. Be very careful to stay away from black henna tattoos though, as they are dangerous!

Getting a tattoo is painful, plain and simple. If you can’t handle the pain or just aren’t quite ready to get something permanent, have some fun and try these different types of temporary tattoos!

Usually, these are applied to children for fun or adults who may want to try wearing a temporary tattoo before going for the real thing. Some can look quite real and can give a hint as to what reactions they will generate from friends or family members. This might be a better way to go for some people before getting a real tattoo to lessen the risk of going through a real tattoo removal at some later date. Removing a tattoo is not something that anyone wants to do if they can avoid it.

Most temporary tattoos contain cosmetically approved additives approved for use on the skin, but in the past, alerts have been issued for foreign made temporary tattoos because they are not labeled with a mandated ingredient list. Also, past imports of henna products for skin use have been banned because of no mandated labels. Henna is approved for use as a hair dye and not as a skin dye for tattoos. Black and blue henna are somewhat suspect since natural henna normally produces a reddish brown tint. These black “henna” tattoos contain p-phenylenediamine other wise known as coal tar and are unsafe for long term contact with skin, especially children.

Always make sure any temporary tattoo given to your kids comes in a package printed with a list of ingredients. We don’t want something fun for the kids to be harmful.

As for the ingredients that go into making real tattoo pigment, always ask the shop owner or artist giving you the tat what’s in the pigment. These days there is usually nothing to worry about, but it never hurts to be safe. Red pigments are the most likely to cause an allergic reaction which could necessitate a removal depending on the severity of the reaction.

Inspiration can be hard to come by. When I was an art student in high school, I was never one to come up with cool ideas for projects in my head and execute them well. Drawing from photographs was more my thing. Creative writing was also a challenge, which is probably why my path in life has led me to business. The marketing world still requires a level of creativity, though, and finding inspiration can be hard to come by. For those who are not marketing specialists, I can imagine coming up with ideas for promotion could be quite a challenge. In the case of apartment managers, there are a number of sources they can turn to for new ideas to attract, retain, and renew residents, but as we saw in yesterday’s post, those sources aren’t always going to lead you down the right path.

Of course, this goes beyond poorly-created flyers. I wasn’t completely sure how to react when I came across a website encouraging companies to use promotional temporary tattoos. The site states that these customizable tattoos are “ideal” for apartment marketing, create word-of-mouth marketing, and allow exposure to your ideal target market. Hmmm. That really makes me wonder who they think is an “ideal target market” for apartment managers who are trying to attract prospects. The website claims that “the tattoo wearer’s friends and associates are similar in demographics and taste”. But when I think of the type of person who is going to wear a temporary tattoo, this is what comes to mind:

I mean, the kid is cute and all, but I feel like his friends who are “similar in demographics and taste” are not the people who are going to be leasing apartments anytime soon. Besides the fact that anyone this age would rather put on a Spiderman or Barbie tattoo than a logo for an apartment building. Furthermore, I doubt that any adult who agrees to put one on will go showing it off to his or her associates. So remember: be careful where you are getting your inspiration from for marketing ideas. Otherwise, you may end up with a child whose face is smeared with chocolate ice cream as your “spokesperson.”

It’s been a CRAZY couple of days!

Welcome home, TekDek =) I missed you!

That Friday, we went to Bill and Donna’s for Billy’s Birthday Bonfire =) Terry surprised him- sorta.

Tanya and I went to Party City before we got there. I picked up those tattoos haha

Terry and I stayed the weekend because that Sunday, Bill and I both had a table for the Penny Saver at Mompou in Newark

Before heading to Newark, we went over to Meagan’s so Tristan could shoot Bill.

This Thursday/Friday night, Tanya and Vadim shot Don Ryan’s music video at this warehouse in Brooklyn.

On Saturday, Terry and I did some setting up at the Monroe Center then went to see Where The Wild Things Are. It was such a beautiful movie (as I expected it to be). Go see it!!! After that, we came to my house and saw Detroit Rock City on VHS haha

But first read this little bit of advice

There is nothing more daunting then starting your own business. And rightfully so, there is a lot at risk, your time and money and also your pride. Its one thing to screw up alone, but when you family and friends are seeing it all happen, it can be humiliating.

So my first piece of advice, and probably any other entrepreneurs, is to either A) not care what they think, or B) Plan in advance to not screw up, which means to read or study or take a class on what you are going to do..

So you are probably wondering about the airbrush tatto business, like is it hard, is it expensive. Well the answer to those is a resounding “no”. It is not hard to do (see video in link)

It is not expensive to start (more on that later).

The only thing you have to worry about is your time. What do I mean? Well are you willing to work on the weekends? To some this sounds horrible! Giving up your weekend to work sounds bad to most|Working on the weekends doesnt sound pleasant to anyone, BUT you have to remember that you could be very busy, making more on Saturday along then you do all week at work.

As a kid, I loved temporary tattoos. It’s safe to say that pretty much everyone has tried them at some point, from painted on designs to the ones you’d find in sweet wrappers. Showing off your newly “inked” tweety-pie, superman, and batman tattoos was just the done thing. Their only downfall? All of your friends could have the same designs. It’s the same problem that plagues the tattoo industry today. Who’d want to wear someone else’s flash designs?

We all know that children love to draw. So why not have them design their own temporary tattoos, and take pride in their own artwork? “Tattoo You!: Color And Make Your Own Temporary Tattoo Designs” gives them that opportunity. You buy the book, which comes with 30 pages of tattoo paper and 4 colouring crayons, and let them design their own masterpieces.

Although aimed towards children, I think there could be a market for this with adults too. Before getting tattooed myself, my parents wanted me to draw the design out on my side and “try it on” before going to the studio. Being in such an awkward place, it was never going to work, but if I’d known about this book I may have given it a go. Living with a temporary tattoo you don’t like for a few weeks would be much easier than being stuck with a bad design permanently.

Love it or hate it, it’s up to you. Still, I really hope this doesn’t get slated like Totally Stylin’ Barbie by concerned parents…

From time to time here on Tattoosday UK, we hear a story about how tattoos are being marketed to younger audiences every day. Some love the promotion of diversity, others hate the “invasion” of innocence. Either way, you can’t hide from the fact kids love tattoos.

Tattoos For Tots has taken this idea of temporary children’s’ tattoos and made an attempt to make it educational. Each tattoo is designed to be appropriate for the child’s age, and will teach them important literacy skills. To me, this sounds brilliant. I’m sure we can all remember using those stick on tattoos you’d get from bubblegum when you were a kid, almost every kid did it. So why not make something educational and fun?

I can imagine there’ll be some negative responses from some parents, which is a shame. Yes, this won’t be for everyone, and that’s fine, but if Tattoos For Tots suffers the same response as Mattel’s Totally Stylin’ Tattoo Barbie, it would be awful. I hope more products come out that will subtly teach children about tattoos and diversity.
