At last I finally managed to watch this movie with no regrets. In fact I planned to watch this several months back when it was released, but due to Megavideo and some program getting rid if the annoying limiter being a bitch I had to postpone it, that is, when I had o other choice but to download -sigh-. Anyways here’s my review.

Warning: Contains mild spoilers.

Being a clever compilation, this film simply covers the first half, 13 episodes first arc or whatever of the TV anime series, meaning the film is aimed at fans who’ve already watched the series and new comers too. The movie apparently includes some new footage too, which I do not remember seeing since the last time I watched Gurren Lagann was back in 2007, just when the Anime finished it’s broadcast run. The film heavily focuses on the most epic, violent and dramatic scenes from the story, most likely due to having the newcomers grasp the concept of the plot as one of the main film’s objectives, and just rushes through the middle section of the story while having the “ROW! ROW! FIGHT DA POWER!!” rap song thing playing over.

The main differences between this movie and the TV series is that particularly, Kamina’s death has been emphasized and made more dramatic in the film, the fanservice scene has been skipped over in that fast forward montage, the battles in the film are trimmed and toned down at first but extended in the final battle, the supporting characters weren’t really that much introduced except for the final scene when they all giga drill blast the enemies away and also it seems that Nia’s hair is kept intact for the whole movie.

Shoko Nakagawa returns to sing the ending theme for the film, entitled “Tsuzuku Sekai” which translated in English roughly means “The World Continues”.

Yet again another epic song sung by the legendary Nakagawa-san.

I knew Shimon had it within him.

SLAP DAH BUTT!

You know you ain’t many when you don’t see a rainbow appearing when you pee!

NOOOOOOOO!!! DON’T GO KAMINA!!!!!! D:

Shimon just hit the jackpot!

FUKK YA!

I wonder how much of the Earth’s resources they used up to build that monstrosity.

The whole Dai-Gurren Gang, excluding Kamina unfortunately…

For every 10 people, 3 will ROFL at this screen due to its awkwardness.

Overall a great compilation film by the legendary animation studio Gainax. The animation is well done and is perfectly polished and neat during the action and explosions, as you can actually see what’s going on unlike other action and thriller anime out there. For the die-hard fans of Gurren Lagann this movie is definitely a must watch to fill in their Gurren Lagann cravings and for newcomers can watch it too, as it basically tells the whole story of the 1st arc from start to finish in about 2 hours. Fitting if anyone is intimidated to watch the 26 episode TV anime. Of course, since being a 2 hour movie compared to the 25 minutes x13 length in the TV anime unfortunately some stuff will be left out or otherwise briefly shown in the montage that’s shown half way into the movie. For example the appearance of Rossiu and his underground village and the short battle with Viral at a hot spring. Meaning if someone who hasn’t yet watched the TV anime and want to see more they’d have no choice but to watch the TV series.

OVERALL RATING: 9.6/10

Also be sure to watch the movie’s sequel; Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann The Movie: Lagann-hen, where the story will take place seven years into the future after the defeat of the Spiral King!

I had recently read a nice entry on Ali’s blog about her memories involving snow. So this is kinda like my spin off of that. Although, when I think of snow I don’t think of sentimental personal memories like her. I think of anime and games!

Cosmo Canyon theme

I can’t remember the exact time frame I got my first Playstation but it must have been the late fall since I remember getting to Cosmo Canyon when there was snow on the ground. I’m wondering just why it took me that long to get there… Final Fantasy 7 in general was just a very fun experience for me because I had never experienced game play like it ever, and it was all in 3D and stuff.

Lunar Eternal Blue Complete

This was released in December 2000, and I most definitely had my copy reserved. Totally had a blast playing this game because it was a little different from the first game. Hell, probably better. I was in 8th grade at the time.

Final Fantasy X

Perhaps the most fun FF experience I ever had. Why? I bought it before my high school Christmas vacation, and just marathoned it the entire break. I think I beat it on or near the last day of my break. It was fun because I did a lot of the side quests and stuff. I just remember staying up late trying to fucking dodge 100 or whatever lightening bolts and all that ridiculous shit. It was fun because it was just pure gaming for that period of time.

Densha Otoko

I really liked watching Densha Otoko and I watched it near the end of December. It really sticks out for me because I watched the entire thing mostly in one sitting. I just liked the characters and plot. Playing Twilight just reminds me of those cold days getting up early for work in December.

Gurren Lagann

Watched this just a few years ago. I watched the entire thing over Christmas break. Fell in love with it. Great show, great characters, great everything. I want to watch it again because I feel the first watch was just so stress filled because I was worrying about my study abroad shit at the time I was watching this as well.

Miss You by Yukari Tamura

I bought the DVD that the clip is from. It’s where I actually first heard the song Miss You. Totally fell in love with the song, and I found myself playing it all the time that winter. This and Gurren Laggann go hand in hand because they were both around the same time.

Kanon

Not Kanon the anime or visual novel. More like the Kanon music. Kanon has a great soundtrack that with every first snowfall I absolutely must play Pure Snows. Then for the rest of winter playing music from Kanon just sounds right. Although, I’m weird like that because I refuse to listen Clannad and Air music out of season.

Skies of Arcadia
Donkey Kong Country
A short lived revived interest in Negima
Dennou Coil
Dreamcast
El Hazard TV series
90’s anime music

There probably should be more but off the top of my head these are the kinds of things that might come to mind when I see snow.

Sorry for the lack of figure reviews, it’s a little hard to find time when you’re usually outside of the house and all. Today’s review will be on this figure that I bought at this year’s Otakuthon.

To be honest, I never really took the cute factor of this figure into account. Although, it is appealing to those who love chibis.

As seen above, this figure comes with two facial expressions. The left one consists of an angry face while the on the right…well, I’m not sure whether she’s looking sheepish or relieved.

The detailing was pretty well done on her back.

It’s sort of disturbing to see a hole on the back of someone’s head, but not for this figure. I like the shade of black on her hair.

The figure comes with an extra set of legs and three extra arms. The happy face on the leg kind of freaks me out.

The plastic holder to…hold the figure.

The holder does its job. The lines on the side doesn’t look all that great though…

A close up of her hair. I really like how they painted it.

She also comes with a pair of yellow glasses. I’m sure it’s there to protect her eyes from the light that emits from obliterating her enemies to bits and pieces. That or to prevent her eye’s from making contact from the splatters of blood.

The rifle is pretty sick, but the view of it on the next picture is much more flattering.

In conclusion, this figure was worth the money. For all those figure collectors or those who love Yoko, this chibi version of her is not hard on the eyes at all. The next review will be on something you all wouldn’t expect.

After having previously shown some photos of my Detolf display case equipped with Dioder led lights,

After having previously shown some photos of my Detolf display case equipped with Dioder led lights, Ludovic suggested making some photos at night with only the led light strips illuminating the display case.

Thought this was interesting idea, so one evening turned off all the other lights and snapped some images.

As making these photos required a longer exposure time compared to a daytime photoshoot, it was necessary to use a tripod to keep the camera steady throughout.

With the only light source coming from above, you can see that Saber Lily’s face remains darker due to her pose and hair covering that angle of incoming light.

Really love the effect the led lights have on Kos-Mos’ near transparent blue hair. Astute viewers may notice her base is slightly curved, although she has never been exposed to direct sunlight, after time it somehow started to bend.
When pulling Kos-Mos from the base, it sets itself back straight, so suspect the legs on the figure are somehow pulling together causing the base to bend.

Left the ISO setting at ISO 200, using f-stop setting f/9 and having the light source in the shot itself, the exposure of the first photo was only ½ second. This second photo already had a full second exposure time but had stopped down to f/14 there.

Above image looks rather bright for a nighttime photo, being further away from the led lights and with f-stop f/16 the exposure time was set to 13 seconds to achieve this result.

Not having really shot with such long exposure times at night yet, was quite interested to see how it would turn out.

The bottom glass plate was really in the dark, was hard to discern any real details with the naked eye, but using an exposure time of 15 seconds, managed to get a well lit shot though did open up to f/11.

Used my Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens instead of the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro USM lens since its working distance was more convenient to get the full width of the display cabinet in the frame.

My photography skills are still basic, but really like snapping images and trying things, though should take my camera along with me throughout the day to practice.

Hmmm, so much for getting this done quickly – not being able to type alot is really pissing me

Hmmm, so much for getting this done quickly – not being able to type alot is really pissing me off! Anyway better (extremely) late than never eh!? Ahem…….yeah.

Ok so this is the beginning of the end for my personal Top Ten mecha series – the top 2! It should be ridiculously easy to guess what these shows are if you’ve ever looked at my Anime Planet account But lets pretend everyone’s clueless shall we!? I couldnt stop myself and as a result this is a touch on the overlong side……to soften the blow a bit #2 and#1 will get their own posts. As always I’ll try to avoid spoilers (yay vagueness!) so onto my #2!

*Beware – excessive and irrational fangirling below…….seriously*

2. Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann:

Ah Gurren-Lagann, otherwise known as awesome in its purest form! I nearly missed this epic ride as I completely dismissed the show when I was looking at preview material – so I didnt jump on the bandwagon until about the time episode 5 was airing…….and have been a committed fan of the show ever since! Its one of those rare series that had me LOLing/ on the edge of my seat/ cheering/ on the verge of tears (all within the space of a single episode occasionally) and when it was all over I was completely satisfied. Gurren-Lagann is an experience that everyone should have

What I loved about TTGL is that its crazy and OTT, but its got alot of heart. The world setting is ridiculous and impossible to take seriously most of the time, and the characters that inhabit this world are larger than life – much as I adore Kamina, if I ever encountered anyone like him in real life, I’d probably run a mile (although even then his burning manly spirit would give me sunburn! ). Given the central theme of the show is that nothing is impossible if you put in enough spirit (although having a nifty transforming robot the size of a galaxy helps too apparently), Gurren-Lagann is just a very positive and fun show – its impossible to be depressed after watching an episode (well with the exception of ep 8 that is) as the manic energy generated just does not allow any negativity! I find myself watching random episodes if I’ve had a particularly crappy day – its like my happy drug

One of the major things that endeared me to TTGL is the animation. Originally when I was looking at preview material I was put off my the bright primary colours and dismissed the series as a kiddie show and moved on. It wasnt until I took note of the positive reaction to the show on other blogs that I decided to actually give it a go. Gainax’s animation on this show is extremely striking and immediately identifiable. The action scenes are nothing short of breathtaking in their explosive glory and the scale continues to grow until the climax where fights are on a galactic scale! The character designs are quite original and visually appealing (if fairly fanservicey…..looking at you Yoko!), costume design was also excellent – capes and huge sunglasses are always good choices Also liked the many and varied Beastmen character designs.

The mecha was pretty original looking too. Called Gunmen, these robots can only be described as faces with arms and legs – oh and they’re are powered by the characters pure awesomeness! It’s comical to watch them moving about in the early part of the series, they’re very ungainly outside of battle, but brilliant to watch fight. Simon’s Lagann is of course special – even though its tiny it packs a punch and its power is unlimited (as ony the main characters machine can be!) It was really fantastic fun to see how the mecha evolved and grew over the course of the show – seriously taking the idea of ridiculous power-ups to their illogical extreme! Say it with me now – ‘GIGAAA DRIIILLLL BREEAAKEER!!!!!!!!’

Oh the music! Have to mention that – the OP and EDs were fantastic, but its the inspirational ‘Libra me from Hell’ with its chant of ‘Row Row, Fight Da Powa!!’ that really sums up the feel of TTGL for me. Everytime I hear it I smile – it’s just genius. The soundtrack in general is exceptional. The voice acting is the icing for me – highlights are Katsuyuki Konishi’s hotblooded speeches as Kamina, Marina Inoue’s wonderful portrayal of Yoko and Tetsuya Kakihara’s wonderful range as Simon’s character evolves and grows up – it’s a fabulous ensemble cast.

Wow, I’ve gone on a bit :| You’ll have to forgive me – its hard to stop once I start on about something I really liked! Needless to say I feel that TTGL is an amazing series and urge any of you that havent had the absolute joy of watching it, to do so as soon as you can!

My #1 will be up tomorrow – can’t type any more tonight

Often use local online retailer Archonia for many of my anime related purchases, have always been quite pleased with their excellent service.

Especially like that their pre-order system allows you to keep some of your items that have been released on hold and combine multiple releases into a single shipment.

Just received the “Aria” volume 5 and “Negima!” volume 24 manga, as well as the “Code Geass: Lelouch Of The Rebellion R2” volume 2 and “Evangelion 1.01 You are (not) Alone” DVD’s.
Haven’t seen “Evangelion 1.01 You are (not) Alone” yet but heard good things about it, quite curious to see what this rebuild of such a classic is like!

Also picked up my first nendoroid, Yoko from “Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann”. Am often told how cute these nendoroids are so thought to get one, especially having seen what great photo subjects they can make.

Well, I’ve recently come across a list with the markers identifying one as an “otaku

Well, I’ve recently come across a list with the markers identifying one as an “otaku“, according to a survey held in Japan. One of the items had described “Anime T-Shirts”, as a negative thing, and I thought that impression should be fixed.

I do agree, there are the totally drawn, overdrawn, over-the-top fashion-victim shirts you see people wear, such as the neon orange and yellow 100% drawn Dragon Ball Z T-Shirts, but there are plenty of shirts one can wear, and which look good, even, and perhaps especially when those who view them do not know that they mark one as a geek. Heck, I’m sure many non-geeks will proudly wear them.

Lagann, on one of my new shirts!

I had the “pleasure” of going out and buying some l0ng-sleeved more fashionable shirts yesterday, and to be honest, I felt quite a bit like Madarame, from Genshiken. My older shirts are very comfortable, but being flannel, they tend to give a certain pajama feel. And I decided something had to be done. Well, imagine my surprise when I saw Lagann at a very mainstream shop.

Lagann at the front, more or less the same posture

For those who do not know, Lagann is the “Head” that Simon finds in the first episode of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and which later provides the “Head” for the joint (and titular) mecha, Gurren Lagann. Upon seeing this, I had to ask my mother who accompanied me, whether or not Renuar, the shop where I got the shirt, was Israeli owned. It turns out that it is. I then checked for any mangled English, because that is also quite common on Israeli shirts (Gifted Extremely, Project Your…). Well, once I checked the different colours the shirts came in, I settled upon this one.

Now, Lagann looks nice, the text seems sufficiently modern, and it is sold by an apparel chain that is quite large and mainstream in Israel. I wonder how many people who will wear this shirt will even know of its anime provenance. I mean, even I, when I first saw the shirt, took a couple of seconds to realize what I was seeing, and that it wasn’t the head of Optimus Prime

And that’s a main way for geeky things to be worn mainstream, because the mainstream can both wear and see them without knowing what they are. But then again, when it is this way, they stop being “Badges”, that when people “in the know” see, they recognize you as one of their own, such as the Order of the Black Knights emblem from Code Geass, or “Don’t Forget October third” from Fullmetal Alchemist.

Well, in future installments I’ll share some of my really cool geeky T-Shirts, which one can wear proudly amongst geek intolerant people, even.

Due to my anime figure collection recently having increased by no less than six figures after variou

Due to my anime figure collection recently having increased by no less than six figures after various pre-orders coming in and getting a few figures at the FACTS convention, quite acutely ran out of room to properly display them all.

With my desk becoming a cluttered mess of figures, even having to put some in front of the computer monitors, it was time to remedy that situation.

So headed to the nearby Ikea to purchase a Detolf display cabinet and a set of Dioder led lights.

The Detolf glass cabinet is quite renowned in the otaku and anime figure collector community for being an ideal display cabinet with a very affordable price tag, its modest dimensions also meant it would fit fine in my office space. Got some Dioder led lights as well to illuminate the figures.

Opted for led lights because they do not produce any significant heat compared to regular bulbs or halogen lights, and I definitely didn’t want my figures to be cooked inside the display cabinet.

This is the Dioder light set prior to installation, it consists of four led strips, connection wires, a power adapter with switch and distributor box, mounting parts and connectors.

It has the advantage you can opt to run each led strip on its own and connect all four into the distributor box or link them all in a chain using only one of the long wires. Personally opted for the latter solution since that way only had to run one cable along the display case and sticking a led strip on each glass shelf just didn’t look clean or professional enough.

Arranged the led strips in a rectangle, applied them to the top wooden panel of the Detolf using the included double-faced tape strips and ran the wire along the top panel and plastic corner piece, secured by small squares of power strip. A nice, clean look.

Before deciding on the Detolf, did consider some alternatives like displaying the figures in another room, which I decided against since it meant I would not really be able to enjoy them as much of my time is spent at my desk or watching anime in the same space.

Getting plain wall mounted shelves was an option but that would mean still having to dust the figures often and having to drill holes in a naked brick wall, which makes putting up the shelves straight more challenging.

The bottom glass plate currently features the lovely Yukino and Kanade from “Candy☆Boy” figures which I reviewed earlier, as well as Horo from “Spice & Wolf”, Blanc Neige from “Shining Wind” and Sakura from “Penguin Musume Heart”.

A disadvantage to the Detolf? Plenty of glass surfaces to clean and prone to reflections, even with a polarizing filter on the lens of my Canon 450D, there’s quite a bit of reflections visible.

The middle glass plate sports gun toting babes with Yoko from “Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann”, including her Yomako alter ego, and the cute Teana Lanster from “Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS”.

Wondering if I shouldn’t display Teana without her base as she can remain upright without it and that base does take up quite a bit of space.

The top glass shelf features the terrific Saber Lily from “Fate/stay night: Unlimited codes”, Shiki from “Kara No Kyoukai” and Alter’s original release of Kos-Mos from “Xenosaga”.

Actually adore the way the white leds create a nice atmosphere and effect on Kos-Mos translucent blue hair.

Not visible, the top of the cabinet actually has the lovely but huge Majikina Mina from “Samurai Showdown V” and the bottom also hosts some figures.

With the cabinet already being quite full, I’m wondering how I’ll ever be able to accommodate Alter’s upcoming Nanoha and Fate from “Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS” in it.

Around two and a half years ago, when I found out that a spin-off of Bakeneko was announced, I becam

Around two and a half years ago, when I found out that a spin-off of Bakeneko was announced, I became a little bit too overflown with enthusiasm, completely forgot that my brother isn’t exactly an obscure-anime elitist, and ran to show Bakeneko to him so that we could watch its spin-off together.

He didn’t even get through the first thirty seconds and declared that he won’t be watching it because the animation sucks. I was really surprised there, so I demanded an explanation. His complaints were the fact that there was no shading and “what’s up with this texture”. So it became clear that my close-minded brother would not watch Bakeneko simply because he couldn’t accept its unique style.

There is an another anime with a unique style. I came upon it on animeph while looking for something to watch. The person who wrote that short summary of the first episode made a little comment on the animation, so I expected it to be something that looked really messy and low-budget, to the point that you wonder how it managed to get to air on TV.

What I saw surprised me though. It was not bad, it was just… different. It had a unique style, perfect for someone who is a little bit tired of the usual stuff after watching a few thousand anime episodes in the period of 3-4 months.

But while watching Kemonozume, I couldn’t help but wonder at certain times. Does that character really need to have a crease in his head? Should I write down its sudden appearance to the show’s unique style, or did the animator’s hand kinda slip there?

To put my mind to peace, I just decided that it was all the show’s unique style, and that that character was supposed to have a crease in his head there. I don’t know why, but he was supposed to. I gave the same kind of explanation to all off-model drawings and various trippy distortions. And frankly, after getting far enough into Kemonozume, you become quite unsure of what an “off-model drawing” or a “trippy distortion” even are.

Once you completely buy the “unique style” bit, you can accept anything to be on purpose, to be totally the way the creators intended it, to be the way it’s supposed to be. A “bad drawing” does not exist anymore, everything is the way it has to be, it looks great as it is, and don’t you dare to complain you close-minded closemindeder!

Which is where a slight problem arises.

Shortly after Kemonozume, I started watching Ergo Proxy. Animation-unrelated problems I have with that anime aside, its seventh episode threw up a storm in my head.

The previous episodes of Ergo Proxy were either all shiny and polished, or at least pretended to be all shiny and polished. But episode seven was very obviously unpolished, its main character was very obviously off-model, and I had no idea what to think. Didn’t I accept all those things in Kemonozume just recently? Wouldn’t going all “lol, looks like they’ve ran out of budget there!” at Ergo Proxy now make me a hypocrite?

To put my mind to peace, I decided that I value consistency.

The first episode of Ergo Proxy was shiny and polished, which means that the show intends to be such all the way throughout its run, that I can expect that from it, and that I can complain when it strays from that path.

That didn’t put my mind to peace entirely though, because there was also something else going through my head while watching that episode, something that I’m a bit ashamed to admit.

If you ever watched Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann then you probably noticed that were was something weird about episode four. I noticed it too. It took me half an episode to do that but eventually I did notice it.

30% of the episode was spent like this.

And I wasn’t really sure what to think of it, I value consistency, don’t I? But there was something else at play there. That episode of TTGL was directed by Osamu Kobayashi.

I didn’t know that untill I went to a certain forum and read what people had to say about that episode over there. There were a few people saying that Osamu Kobayashi is a great director, that his stuff is great, that that episode directed by him was 100% perfect, that they enjoyed it a lot, that they would love it if the whole anime was done like that, and that those who complain simply don’t “get it” (elitism much?). Then of course there were people who countered that with the “consistency is important” argument, and there were those who didn’t care about what anyone else was saying and just went all “lol, looks like they’ve ran out of budget there!”

I still couldn’t really decide what to think though. Is “I value consistency” valid or am I this close-minded person who couldn’t accept the weirdness of that episode the same way my brother couldn’t accept Bakeneko?

What “saved” me there was someone who pointed out that Osamu Kobayashi also directed Paradise Kiss. That person said that they hated his directing there just as much as they hated it in that episode of TTGL. Well, the thing is that I loved Paradise Kiss. It’s one of those anime which I gave a 10/10 without a tiniest doubt in my heart.

So there, I’m not close minded about Osamu Kobayashi, I simply value consistency. If the whole of TTGL was that way then I wouldn’t have minded, but it wasn’t, so I did.

Not that long ago I marathoned the both seasons of Tetsuwan Birdy Decode. During the flashback episode in the season two, there happened a sudden switch in the animation style. I remember seeing that animation style before, I just don’t remember where. Obviously that was some famous animator using his famous skills to create his famous style of animation, so I can’t complain about it, right? Of course I can get back to my “but… consistency!”, but what if I just don’t “get it”?

Which brings me back to Ergo Proxy.

The “something else” that was going through my mind while watching that episode was the possibility that it was animated by some super-star animator that I can’t complain about. Obviously that was not the case there, the studio making Ergo Proxy totally ran out of either budget or time there, but still, I couldn’t just dismiss that possibility the same moment it came to my head, because what if I really don’t “get it”?

Which again makes me wonder about the line between “unique style” and “bad drawings”. Why the seventh episode of Ergo Proxy has to be fixed while flashback episode of Tetsuwan Birdy doesn’t? Why Ergo Proxy has to be consistent but Tetsuwan Birdy doesn’t? And is it okay to give certain animators special treatment while all others have to fit their drawings to the default style of the show and keep everyone on-model? Which things can I lol at?

In the end, I am not settled on this matter at all. The next time I see something along the lines of the flashback episode of Tetsuwan Birdy, I will spend the rest of that day bashing my head to the wall and trying to decide on whether I simply don’t “get it” or just value consistency, because, after all, I did enjoy Kemonozume. And Bakeneko, for that matter.
