Dear Ludovic, You are learning so many new things right now. You have suddenly got the hang of

Dear Ludovic,

You are learning so many new things right now. You have suddenly got the hang of “you” and “me”. You can look at a photo and say that is “me”. Before you would just have said “there’s Ludovic” or “Ludovic baby”. You also understand that different people can be “you”. So, when you were telling Granddad about the picture of the boat you said “that’s me and that’s you”. It’s funny to see you get your head round these difficult concepts. You’ve also started using “she” quite a lot, maybe you believe all your toy cars are female (as in “where IS she mama? the orange digger with the backhoe? where HAS she gone?”) I’m sure you’ll soon get the hang of “he” too.

With regards to the other words you are learning “oh s**t” is not a good one and Mummy wasn’t happy when you decided to share that one with everybody on the train. Loudly. Mummy has only said it a few times, like yesterday when she dropped the glass and it smashed or last week when she didn’t get the job she’d applied for. You are right Grandad B. does say “sugar” a lot, sugar is better than s**t. Please use sugar from now on.

Tense is another difficult one to deal with, it will take you years to learn, in fact Mummy still gets confused about it now, but she is pretty sure that you didn’t “do-ed something” (as in “I do-ed that all by my own self”) I think you mean, I did that on my own. Tricky one that, it gets even worse when you learn a different language and you realise that actually, English makes no sense at all. Mummy is glad she didn’t have to learn English as a second language because practically every rule has one hundred exceptions.

Keep up the good work love, you’ll soon be able to talk the hind legs off a donkey. If you ever have friends who speak another language you’ll have to explain what talking the hind legs off a donkey means, it’s another one of those things about the English language that doesn’t make sense. Mummy has never seen a donkey without it’s back legs.Even if she did she would be highly skeptical that they fell off because someone wouldn’t stop talking.

Furthermore, if any of your friends are learning English as an another language you may need to explain that not all swear words are created equal. Although s**t is the “worst” swear word you (currently) know, suffice it to say there are plenty others and in English they are on a sort of sliding scale of inappropriateness. You can usually get off with s**t in polite company under duress. I would avoid f**k at all costs, it’s just not polite and as I keep telling you, you need to use your manners.

Love

Mummy

Last month in my journal (October 2009), I gave an overview of what Shamanic Astrology is. This month, I am going to explore the twelve spirit animal signs of the medicine wheel a little deeper, so that you can begin to discover the special qualities each sign possesses.

There are twelve astrological “signs” on the medicine wheel, which are represented by twelve different spirit animals. Shamanic Astrology teaches us that inner power derives from knowing the properties, characteristics, and qualities of each spirit animal (known as their “medicine”), and applying this in our own lives.

To get you started, here are some of the main strengths and weaknesses of each of the twelve spirit animals. It is really interesting to note that weaknesses are often just a mirror of our strengths and qualities. What we see as “weaknesses” can often be transformed into “strengths.” Take Falcon people, for example, whose “weaknesses” can be their tendency to be impulsive and headstrong. Transformed, these qualities become Falcon people’s strengths – their spontaneity and pioneering nature.

(If you are not sure which spirit animal sign you are, you can find out by looking your birthday up in the second table below – “Which animal sign are you?”)

Strengths and Weaknesses of the twelve spirit animal signs:

I always find it fascinating to look up the qualities of my friends, family and work colleagues. It is amazing how much their spirit animal sign can tell you about why they may behave in certain ways!

You can find out more about the personality of your own spirit animal and how you relate to the other signs, in my book Shamanic Astrology: Understanding Your Spirit Animal Sign. You can also discover the different spirit animal clans that you, your friends and family belong to, and your own special plant, stone, element, color and life path.

Which animal sign are you?
To find your spirit animal sign, just locate your birthday from the dates below, according to your place of birth. If you were born north of the equator (eg; USA, Canada, Europe), then look for your date of birth in the column headed “Northern Hemisphere.” If you were born south of the equator (eg; Australia, New Zealand, South Africa), then look for your date of birth in the column headed “Southern Hemisphere.”

This month, I wish you lots of fun and magic in exploring the strengths and qualities of your own spirit animal sign, and discovering those of your friends, family and work colleagues too!

Love and blessings,

And then when they do,
there’s this weird tension in the air that almost completely goes away?

What causes that?

Is the tension gone because you feel relieved that they left?

Or is it because there is a tense energy around them that
follows them wherever they go?

(because I honestly have no idea.)
You would either have to be opposed to the ideas of certain
New Age-y, metaphysical ideas to believe the former, but agree with those ideas
of the latter.

But, in light of the not-so-vast number of options,

I’d like to relate a little back and forth I’ve been having with a fellow member of our little group here, Sean Grigsby, regarding the use of tense. Several of my more recent stories have been written in present tense, much to the chagrin of young Sean, who doesn’t feel present tense is proper for a work of fiction.

Here’s the interesting part: What Sean didn’t like about a couple of my present tense stories were exactly the things I did like about them. Here was my explanation, specifically regarding a short called ‘Muscle Memory’, a comedy about bodyswitching that begins with a guy waking up to discover he now inhabits his wife’s body, and he’s not alone. The dog and cat have switched, his next door neighbors have as well. There’s a scene where our main character, Billy, is trying to breastfeed his young son while his neighbor, Tucker, now inhabiting the body of his wife, can’t stop staring at the bare-breasted spectacle…

What I like about present tense is its immediacy, the sense of urgency it implies. I guess we’ll just have to disagree here because I feel it’s perfect for this story. The plight of the characters, to me, feels more urgent and helps put the reader right there at the table with them, staring at the guy’s tits and sharing in their bewilderment. After awhile, past tense just gets too damn old. Every story that I wrote in past tense began to sound and read and feel the same to me. You need to experiment sometimes, see what else is possible.

The point of this amiable exchange would be, there is no right way, just as there is no wrong way. There are certain rules to be followed in writing, but rules were made to be broken, too. Personally, I think it would be wrong not to experiment from time to time. Try a different tense, or bang something out in 1st person. You never know what might happen. It’s like when you go to your wife’s closet and try on her lacy dainties, you know, just to see how they feel. Or, uh… so I’m told. By Kevin Wallis.

I have been compared to a dog many times in my life. Not because of my sexual proclivity, more because of my loyalty. I am fiercly loyal to those I love. I get my hackles raised easily. Old habits. Old ghosts. It’s this loyalty that gets me in trouble. I stay a part of things too long. I let them envelop me. I let them hurt me. I tend to expect the same from others and somehow am blindsided every time when it doesn’t happen. That is one of the factors that makes this imminent move harder. The “what if I’m not there” scenarios seem to plague my thoughts. I’ve still never forgiven myself for not being around for dads battle. I need to adopt more canine behaviors. Bite the ambilical chord to those around me and let them go. Starting now.

So Adam and Eve were walking around being amazing. They were walking with God. They knew not to eat

So Adam and Eve were walking around being amazing. They were walking with God. They knew not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And they were fine. Then they were tempted by the snake and fell to sin, bringing the remainder of humanity with them.

Separation. Distance. from God. There was now dissonance between them and between them and God. But they couldn’t reach God.

But God didn’t want to leave us in this state of utter separation and dissonance and ugliness. So he was like “Yo, Son, Go down there and die for the sins of everyone.” And that’s what Jesus did. And we have resolution (to some extent at the moment) in Him.

But it isn’t that easy. Jesus rocked the world upside-down and backwards. He changed everything. He was a king but a servant. saved the world but washed people’s feet. Lord but a friend. A son but a Son of God. Crucified but the Messiah. Broken but Whole And Holy. man but God.

This ain’t normal, friends. He flipped the world on its backside. He shook the world. He created tension. Or at least uncovered it. But through this amazing tension we’re able to seek and see him more. We are free through his tension. He made more tension and felt more tension than anyone can ever feel. The dissonance ringing in His ears must have been unbearable. But He is God.

Right now I feel a lot of tension. Not a lot of resolution. College essays. Homework. Relationships. Family. They are tense. But maybe these tensions are where we are supposed to thrive. Without extreme dissonance we won’t know resolution. Everything will sound fine. But we have to keep finding tension. Keep sitting in the tension. Keep working through the tension. If you don’t see any, just ask. It’s all around.

Tension hurts and tension is hard. I hate the lies I tell myself. I hate calling God a liar by not believing what He says about me. I hate living in pain. But I think that’s where God can come in to things and make peace within us even though there is none around us.

We aren’t going to miss tension. We aren’t we aren’t going to know true peace until we go back Home. Peace is good. But there’s a plan and a reason for every tension too. Let’s live by Jesus’ tension. Let’s rock the world on its side, inside-out.

(un?)fortunately frustrated and tense as usual,

Last week was not pleasant for me. I had what I’ve decided to call a mild but long-lasting panic attack. I was so full of nervous energy that I couldn’t focus on anything, and felt very worried and anxious for no discernible reason, and had trouble sleeping too. It’s not an experience I care to repeat. However, out of that came this page.

The text teads:

“Check Facebook. Check Facebook again. Pick up the knitting. Put down the knitting. Stand up, pace the room, sit down. Check Facebook. Pick up the book. Put down the book. Round and round in circles, too nervous and tense to sit still, and for no reason at all. At night, I couldn’t sleep. I’d lay awake in bed, willing myself to drift off, till nearly dawn, and then wake up at noon, groggy from the heat, and just as anxious. This lasted for three weeks, and it was awful.”

[Edit: Five minutes after posting the song "Times" by Tenth Avenue North popped into my head. I wish I'd thought to listen to it last week.]

Brian De Palma (born Brian Russell DePalma on September 11, 1942) is an American film director. In a career spanning over forty years, he is probably best known for his suspense and thriller films, including such box office successes as Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Scarface, Carlito’s Way, The Untouchables, and Mission: Impossible.

Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, De Palma worked repeatedly with actors Jennifer Salt, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen (his wife from 1979 to 1983), William Finley, Charles Durning, Gerrit Graham, cinematographers Stephen H. Burum and Vilmos Zsigmond, set designer Jack Fisk, and composers Bernard Herrmann and Pino Donaggio. De Palma is credited with fostering the careers of or outright discovering Robert De Niro, Jill Clayburgh, John C. Reilly, John Leguizamo, and Margot Kidder.

Trade Mark:

[Split screen] Often uses split screens (created optically or using a split diopter while shooting) to build suspense and/or convey story information. This allows the audience to choose what to look at and engages them further in the story (Phantom of the Paradise (1974), Carrie (1976), _Dressed To Kill (1980)_, Blow Out (1981), Mission: Impossible (1996), Snake Eyes (1998), Femme Fatale (2002) and _The Black Dalhia (2006)_).

[Alfred Hitchcock Homage] Films frequently reference the work of Alfred Hitchcock, using similar locations, camera techniques/compositions, musical scores by Bernard Herrmann (a frequent Hitchcock collaborator), and blondes as leading ladies.

Frequently casts ‘Robert de Niro’, ‘William Finley’, John Lithgow, Gregg Henry, ‘Dennis Franz’, Gary Sinise, Al Pacino, ‘Sean Penn’ and ex-wife Nancy Allen.

The “LONG TAKE” which is usually complimented by a series of elaborate tracking shots or dolly movements

Dopplegangers (or evil twin), and femme fatales appear frequently in De Palma’s films.

Often shoots ‘tense’ moments without any widening lens or zoom. When coupled with his trademark extended shot, it creates a feeling the viewer is in the scene.

Safari Jacket

[Voyeurism] Films often feature a protagonist who is voyeuristic by nature (Dressed To Kill (1980)), profession (Blow Out (1981)), or circumstance (Body Double (1984)).

Trivia:

Won top prize in regional Science Fair in high school. Project was “An Analog Computer to Solve Differential Equations.” Cf. computer nerd in Dressed to Kill (1980).

De Palma graduated from Friends’ Central School, a small quaker school outside of Philadelphia

De Palma bases his most famous cinematic predilection, voyeurism, on a specific childhood incident. When he was a child, his parents split up, his mother accusing his father of infidelity. The young De Palma spent several days stalking his dad with recording equipment, hoping to find evidence to confirm his mother’s suspicions.

Uncle of actor Cameron De Palma.

In the 1970s, De Palma helped a close friend on a film project. He helped audition and interview actors. When the film was shot, DePalma did some uncredited writing on an opening “scrawl,” a device the friend thought of at the last minute to help explain events in the film, so the audience would not be confused. The friend was George Lucas and the film was Star Wars (1977).

First child with Gale Anne Hurd, Lolita, born September 19, 1991.

Second daughter, Piper De Palma, born October 21 1996 in Palo Alto, California.

Brother of photographer Bart DePalma.

Italian-American.

Is a Bruce Springsteen fan and directed him in the “Dancing In The Dark” music video.

Wrote the role of the hooker in Dressed to Kill (1980) specifically with his then wife Nancy Allen in mind.

Has never contributed an audio commentary track to his DVDs.

Step-father of The OC actress Willa Holland.

Received a special thanks credit in Mean Streets (1973) for introducing Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro to one another.

Straight from the start this is typical Laymon, hard, fast and tension-filled.

Jody Fargo is sixteen and having a sleepover at her friend Evelyn’s house when Evelyn hears something and wakes Jody up. Evelyn tries to persuade Jody to go with her to check on the noise, or wake up her father for him to check, when a huge fat man enters the bedroom and puts a spear through the middle of Evelyn. He mustn’t have seen Jody because he leaves with Evelyn skewed on his pole and joins his friends having fun killing Evelyn’s parents. Jody rushes to Evelyn’s little brother’s bedroom and finds his alive, together they must escape the group of killers in a run for their lives that will last much longer than just the night…

The two young survivors are stalked by the serial killer Simon Quirt, one of the gang of killers who massacred Evelyn’s family, with only Jody’s dad, a cop, and his female friend to help them.

Tightly written, fast-paced and action-packed, Laymon manages to squeeze a whole load of tension into the three hundred pages. The characters are all pretty good, but film good, not Stephen King good.

The main killer Simon Quirt gets his own piece of the action, recording his thoughts on a tape recorder throughout so we get his warped version of events, which helps no end at cranking up the tension.

As with other Laymon novels it’s got a very film-like quality, simple story, action-driven plot, tense edge of your seat stuff. Standard Laymon is still better than most horror novels. But there’s no depth, little character development. You finish reading the book thinking that was good, and you have been entertained, but that’s it.

OK, so some bits are a little ridiculous, but are there to help the story along or work to increase the tension and feel a bit heavy handed. But they still work.

From the Laymon canon this is slightly above average, but he always delivers. The last Laymon book I read, Blood Games, wasn’t a patch on this. It you like your books fast, action-packed and gruesome then you can’t go far wrong, just don’t expect a masterpiece.
