The National Security Agency is building a $2 billion storage facility that will house and analyze all forms of electronic communication… A potential yottabyte of everyone’s (formerly) personal data.

This got me thinking about disk storage sizes and data comparisions:

Disk Storage

1 Bit = Binary Digit
8 Bits = 1 Byte
1000 Bytes = 1 Kilobyte
1000 Kilobytes = 1 Megabyte
1000 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte
1000 Gigabytes = 1 Terabyte
1000 Terabytes = 1 Petabyte
1000 Petabytes = 1 Exabyte
1000 Exabytes = 1 Zettabyte
1000 Zettabytes = 1 Yottabyte

Bit: A Bit is the smallest unit of data that a computer uses. It can be used to represent two states of information, such as Yes or No.

Byte: A Byte is equal to 8 Bits. A Byte can represent 256 states of information, for example, numbers or a combination of numbers and letters. 1 Byte could be equal to one character. 10 Bytes could be equal to a word. 100 Bytes would equal an average sentence.

Kilobyte: A Kilobyte is approximately 1,000 Bytes, actually 1,024 Bytes depending on which definition is used.

Megabyte: A Megabyte is approximately 1,000 Kilobytes. In the early days of computing, a Megabyte was considered to be a large amount of data. These days with a 500 Gigabyte hard drive on a computer being common, a Megabyte doesn’t seem like much anymore. 650 Megabytes is about the amount of data that will fit on a CD-ROM disk.

Gigabyte: A Gigabyte is approximately 1,000 Megabytes. A Gigabyte is a very common term used these days when referring to disk space or drive storage. 1 Gigabyte of data is almost twice the amount of data that a CD-ROM can hold. But it’s about one thousand times the capacity of a 3-1/2 floppy disk. 1 Gigabyte could hold the contents of about 10 yards of books on a shelf. 100 Gigabytes could hold the entire library floor of academic journals.

Terabyte: A Terabyte is approximately one trillion bytes, or 1,000 Gigabytes. To put it in some perspective a Terabyte could hold 1,000 copies of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Ten Terabytes could hold the printed collection of the Library of Congress.

Petabyte: A Petabyte is approximately 1,000 Terabytes or one million Gigabytes. It’s hard to visualize what a Petabyte could hold. 1 Petabyte could hold approximately 20 million 4-door filing cabinets full of text. It could hold 500 billion pages of standard printed text. It would take about 500 million floppy disks to store the same amount of data.

Exabyte: An Exabyte is approximately 1,000 Petabytes. Another way to look at it is that a Petabyte is approximately one quintillion bytes or one billion Gigabytes. As of 2009 the entire internet was estimated to contain close to 500 exabytes or 50,000 years’ worth of DVD-quality video.

Zettabyte: A Zettabyte is approximately 1,000 Exabytes. The prefix zetta comes from “Zeta,” which is the sixth letter of the Greek alphabet.

Yottabyte: A Yottabyte is approximately 1,000 Zettabytes. The yottabyte is the largest unit of measurement for computer data, consisting of 1,024 zettabytes.

Chris Jacob at Gizmodo writes an article on storage evolution, from floppy drives to terabyted storage (full article at http://gizmodo.com/5414337/man-weve-come-a-long-way-from-floppies?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+gizmodo%2Ffull+%28Gizmodo%29 , original photo bt Curtiss Spontelli at Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/7979419@N02/4131812966/sizes/l/).

It’ really amazing the step forward we, as technologized people, made in a bunch of years.

Seems to me like yesterday (well maybe the day before yesterday ) when i was staring fascinated in front of a noisy ZX48 spectrum loading games from a cassette recorder.

Unfortunately the wider the space, the laziest we become.

When only 48kb of RAM where available, little masterpieces were born (e.g. Jetpac). When memory and storage become cheaper, those masterpieces of optimization were more beautiful than ever (remember sensible soccer for amiga or stunt driver?).

And then storage and memory were for all. We are reasoning in terms of Teras, graphic is the best ever seen since so far, but, IMHO, no masterpiece of smart coding is seing the light.

Of course gaming is not all, but is a (limited) indicator of how we are acting. Imagine what could have been done with same smart coding of good old times and all these space.

Linux I suppose….

Apple’s 27-Inch iMac Is Big, Bright and Beautifully Fast Put one of Apple’s new 27-inch

Apple’s 27-Inch iMac Is Big, Bright and Beautifully Fast

Put one of Apple’s new 27-inch Core i7 iMacs on your desk, and you run the risk of alienating yourself from your friends, co-workers and loved ones.

Sure, the sheer speed of the thing is amazing — the new Core i7 processor is outrageously fast — but it’s the massive screen that will turn your brain into a gob of HD-saturated jelly. Seriously. The iMac’s screen is so freaking huge, so bright and so crisp, it will render you dumb with child-like glee. You’ll just want to sit there and watch movies all day and night.

Don’t get us wrong, the guts aren’t so bad, either. The top-of-the-line iMac is stocked with Intel’s 2.8-GHz Core i7 “Lynnfield” quad-core processor. It’s not only ridiculously fast to begin with, but it has the ability to dynamically overclock itself when it needs an extra boost. (Intel calls this Turbo Mode.)

The base-model Core i7 iMac also comes with a 1-TB hard drive, 4 GB of RAM (the model we tested had 8 GB) and an ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card — not the best graphics hardware, but perfectly acceptable for everyday tasks like watching movies, editing HD videos and playing most games. A wireless keyboard and the new multitouch-enhanced Magic Mouse complete the package.

The machine’s “chin,” the aluminum strip that runs along the bottom edge of the screen, is notably slimmer on this model than previous iMacs. Hidden underneath it are a pair of speakers. They sound a bit muffled, but they pump out enough volume to annoy the neighbors properly.

That said, the iMac’s most striking feature isn’t the chip on the inside or the refashioned chin. Make no mistake: This machine is all about its gargantuan, stupidly massive, comically oversized but utterly gorgeous display.

The 16:9 widescreen panel is LED-powered, so it’s extremely bright. Whites appear truly white, blacks are solidly black, and bright colors burn with intensity.

The screen is encased in edge-to-edge glass, and it reflects an uncomfortable amount of glare in a sunlit room. That’s where the extra brightness becomes a plus, but you’ll find yourself cranking the brightness down to about 50 percent after sundown.

Glare aside, it is exceedingly handsome display. With 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, it’s well beyond high-def resolution. Any HD movie looks terrific, whether it was shot in Hollywood or in your apartment. We soaked up Watchmen on DVD, a few episodes of House on Hulu, and an HD capture of a Radiohead concert, all in full-screen mode. Nothing came close to testing the limits of the processor or the graphics card, and of course everything looked stellar.

While the iMac’s supersized 27-inch screen commands attention, the speed of the Core i7 processor commands respect. We hooked up a Drobo filled with about 350 GB of music, then watched iTunes index the whole thing in under 4 minutes. Compare this to the 20-or-so minutes it took our Core 2 Duo Mac Mini to index the same library. Ripping a 2-hour DVD in Handbrake took just under a half an hour — the Mac Mini took twice as long.

The are some minor touches that earn bonus points. If you want to upgrade the RAM yourself (we beefed ours up to 8 GB) the memory bay is easy to access through a trapdoor under the chin. The aluminum case is beveled and sleek, but it hides an array of ports (four USB and one FireWire, optical in and outs for audio) tucked in the lower corner around back. The Mini DisplayPort also doubles as an input, so you can use your iMac as a secondary display or even (with the correct adapter) as an HDTV.

A SuperDrive and an SD card reader are also standard issue. A nice touch: Your SD card sticks out about a third of the way when fully inserted, so you won’t leave it in the computer and forget to put it back into your camera.

One last caveat. The iMac is so large, it’s tough to sit in front of it properly. Ergonomic experts recommend you situate the top of your screen at or just slightly below eye level, a position we found impossible with two different desks and three different chairs.

Time for a trip to IKEA.

WIRED Did we mention the screen? Sexpot good looks. Core i7 processor is fast enough for the autobahn, and quad-core technology means you get support for next year’s apps today.

TIRED All-glass front enclosure throws off enough glare to give you a tan. Screen is too big for anyone under 6-foot-2, unless they’re sitting on a phone book. Speakers have too much low-end. You’re better off hooking up some sleek Harman Kardons or, better yet, some primo headphones.

The Sinister Yung Breeze

On behalf of our worldwide audience, Joe Stern-McGovern, global agent and President of Universal Artists, International, is pleased to announce the return of Yung Breeze, former partner of DTA of Houston’s hardcore street duo, The Brigade. Known for such hits as Degradation, Block Bleed, Krunch Time, Real Where I’m At, Mob Style, and Hands if You Feel Me, our listeners can come to expect the return of these classics to the shelves and in downloads on the coming site and charitable brainchild of Joe Stern-McGovern, www.endhivaids.com, dedicated to eradicating HIV/AIDS in our lifetime.

Produced by Joe Stern-McGovern in the earliest days of Universal Artists, International, Yung Breeze was a budding prodigy discovered through H-Town’s young producer, Mastamind, along with his cohort, B-Fly, on the hard streets of Houston’s notorious 3rd Ward. With many a scuffle and near miss with the local Texan thugs and corrupted, as well as close encounters with Harris County’s finest, Yung Breeze was molded by the environment in which he was raised.

Joe Stern-McGovern Posing with The Brigade

While Yung Breeze’s lyrics and the vehemence of his delivery are part in parcel of who he has become, his aura and essence are more of a product and statement of that which he has personally witnessed within his community and the back alleys of Sharpstown, as well as the peril he’s bourne on his shoulders rather than a radical call for violence, rebellion, and disobedience. When he cries out for justice and equality, his words ring with crystal clarity as those of an individual whose lived the life against which he protests with endurance, contempt, and integrity, and simultaneously maintains the roots of who he’s developed into as a man of pride and consequence.

If you wish to know how the other side of the tracks has lived and survived without personally endangering yourself and your future, take a quick listen to the furious tales of the dark side as portrayed on the microphone and in the studio by the genuine article, Houston’s Yung Breeze.

In spite of the anger and resentment one might expect from such an individual, Yung Breeze has developed into a rather charitable individual, donating his time and talent to Joe Stern-McGovern and Universal Artists, International’s struggle against the spread of HIV and the devastating consequences of AIDS.

Look for future production of Yung Breeze through the likes of Shaka Productions, as well at H-Town’s legendary recording hot spot, In the Jar Studios, run by the studios owner and operator, Al Loya, techincal afficianado and savvy engineer to some of hip hop’s fastest rising legends.

“When I first met Yung Breeze, he was a struggling youth who had a great sense of pride, an enormous gift of expression, and a knack for conveying his particular genius through the local street venacular of the areas hoods and ruffians. Originally recording at one of the illest and most infamous studios in the shadier side of town, Psyche Ward, Yung Breeze was picked up and developed by the genius of the wonder twins, Boss and Ripp.” Collectively, these forces of the city’s darker and far more dangerous neighborhood known as Southwest Houston, Soufwest to the locals, have come to the forefront in recent days.”

Joe Stern-McGovern can personally vouch for the validity of the young anti-hero as through his entrancing telling of the first photo shoot the act was to experience as the entity which would come to be known as the Soufwest Brigade, or simply, The Brigade, led by street veteran and surprising genius given his circumstances, DTA, “Don’t Trust Anyone”, a meeting in which the photographer was so terrified, he insisted the photo shoot take place in broad daylight in a local downtown Houston city park.

The Southwest Brigade

True to his name, DTA came to generally distrust those who held the strings to his future as well as his cohorts, and the split was made as DTA went MIA and Yung Breeze continued the journey on the road to stardom solo. For those dedicated and loyal fans of DTA, fear not, he is yet in his prime and will surely rise back to the surface given the timing, motive, and opportunity, as his tales are of equal importance to those of any and must be expressed through the venue known widely as hip hop.

Currently holed up in Al’s “In the Jar Studios”, Yung Breeze is deliberating the path of his next turn towards truth and the betterment of society and the world around him through analysis of the streets and the general feeling of the times.

“Youths such as Yung Breeze sadden me in a way,” states Joe Stern-McGovern. “He’s just about the age my son would’ve been had he lived, and upon reflection it fills me with a sense that somehow I, as a part of society, have failed our younger generations, leaving them to inherit a world abandoned to greed and the mismanagement of our leaders and botched policies of the government, an entity whose best intentions are questionable.” Those who have chosen such selfish ends will now come to face the fury and ambitions towards societal justice and self-correction from the likes of DTA, Yung Breeze, two halves of the Brigade.

Imperdibile per gli appassionati.

Gigabyte, terabyte, petabyte… yottabyte?

Sensazionalismo o problema reale?

HDD 160GB

149GB

HDD 250GB

232GB

HDD 320GB

298GB

HDD 500GB

465GB

HDD 1TB

931GB

HDD 1,5TB

1396GB

Curioso ¿no?

Ever heard of SD HC (Secure Digital High Capacity)? Welp, SD XC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity),

Ever heard of SD HC (Secure Digital High Capacity)? Welp, SD XC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity), is supposedly the Next Gen of SD HC.

Recent reports (which by the way have been proven true already) say that the NEW SD XC will outperform its older generation far better and mightier than the HCs. Simply put, more speed, more capacities. How big, you say? Well, it starts at 32GB (the highest its been in todays market) to a whopping, ground-breaking, breath-taking 2TB !!! YEEESSSHHHH… 2TB!!! You may never have to empty your SD cards EVER AGAIN! Well this might not be much of interest to Photographers, it is most definitely pointing towards the Movie business… simply put, more memory = more movie.

At today’s rate, a 4GB card can record a 720p video for 2 hours… now think what a 2TB card can hold! Only problem they need to solve now is the battery!

SD might be big News enough but you do know it has a sibling, right? The mini SD? Well… heh heh… its getting an upgrade too. Brothers unite! The mini SD Card will as well have the capacities of 32GB – 2TB. Think how many music lovers and cellphone enthusiasts there’ll be when this unravels… I’m guessing that when it’s released, it’ll be of a higher but reasonable price but as the market goes on… i’m pretty sure a terabyte of memory will be a common thing to know.

1 Byte = 8 bits
1 Kilobyte (KB) = 1024 bytes
1 Megabyte (MB) = 1024 kilobytes
1 Gigabyte (GB) = 1024 megabytes
1 Terabyte (TB) = 1024 gigabytes
1 Petabyte (PB) = 1024 terabytes
1 Exabyte (EB) = 1024 petabytes
1 Zettabyte (ZB) = 1024 exabytes
1 Yottabyte (YB) = 1024 zettabytes

One thing the Xbox needs is a bigger hard drive – a flurry of new download services are about

One thing the Xbox needs is a bigger hard drive – a flurry of new download services are about to hit LIVE, so it’d be a good idea for Microsoft to increase the capacity of their gaming console so that there’s space for all those movies, songs and pictures. As luck would have it, enhanced storage space could be just around the corner.

Steve Ballmer apologised recently because he wasn’t entirely clear about whether or not a Natal-equipped 360 console would hit the shelves during 2010. Nevertheless, another Xbox-related rumour has jumped into the open, this time concering a much-needed larger hard disk.

Note the Size of this Photo: 360 x 360

Rumour has it that this 360-compatible hard drive may be released at the same time as Natal, which probably indicates it’ll be some time before Xbox becomes a worthy media centre. But it’s not the release dates that have fans talking – it’s the capacity. A whopping one terabyte is plenty space for even the most avid video collector.

One analyst said, ‘I don’t see the timing between new release and digital download being a function of anything other than hard drive sizes. I think as soon as we have large hard drives – think the rumoured Project Natal ‘new’ Xbox 360 with a terabyte of storage in 2010 – we’ll have day-and-date downloads’.

He added, ‘While retailers may baulk at the possibility of day-and-date downloads, I don’t see too many refusing to carry Microsoft product in retaliation. Should a retailer boycott Microsoft, I think that the full force of the publishers would be brought to bear on that retailer, and they would find themselves starved for product’.
