Kashmir, often referred to as paradise on earth, is true. I’ve seen it myself. I can say that.

Kashmir, often referred to as paradise on earth, is true. I’ve seen it myself. I can say that. Though it was freezing cold (maybe because I’ve flown from the tropic Mumbai climate), every second was worth it, especially my assignment. As a journalist, I think this is one of the best assignments I’ve had. And yes, the story was around music.

So I woke up at 3 a.m. to reach to the airport. This is Dec. 6. Soon was in Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir. The air was chill but it felt good to land. I was with a group Emily Wax (South Asia bureau chief of The Washington Post), Ray Thibodeaux (a journalist and one of the organizer’s for the show we were all there), Ed King ( a British freelancer) and Terra Naomi, the American singer-songwriter who was in Kashmir t perform at the Climate Change Concert.

First day, we went up to Gulmarg, a skiing destination at 9,000 feet, where we were all briefed about the climate changes and its impact on the Kashmiri glaciers by Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, a geologist from University of Kashmir. By this time, my feet were numb and I wasn’t in my full senses. So I wrote what I could and recorded (I love my recorder). As the moon rose, the mercury plunged. Went to the place arranged for me by the wonderful hosts in Kashmir. I must say that the Kashmiris are very hospitable.

Day two and it was the concert day. Terra gave a wonderful performance and the Kashmiri orchestra was absolutely phenomenal. I was doing my job, anyways. Talked to people, interviews.

Day three was at the Dal Lake and it was just…amazing. Early morning in one of the shikaraas (boats) and then off for an interview at one of the cafes. Packing and off to Mumbai.

Great trip.

Have filed two of my stories. One more to go. I wish I could have stayed longer and could have talked to more people, done a little more research and worked on a couple more stories. Oh well, greed!

Anyway, I’m happy with my trip and the stories I have–for Republica, Rolling Stone and Yuva.

And being in a conflict zone, talking to people, I think it just gives you a whole new perspective.

People smiled. They talked politics. They talked about independent Kashmir. They chatted about movies and music. Some rallied with banners for “Aazadi (Freedom).” And amid everything, life seemed as normal as it could be.

It’s been a month that I’m here in the commercial capital of India, and I should say I

It’s been a month that I’m here in the commercial capital of India, and I should say I’m getting used to the cosmopolitan city. I’ve attended more parties that I thought I would, I’ve worked on more stories than I thought I would do and met more people than I thought I would meet. All and all, a good experience so far.

A restaurant behind The Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, one of the places for the 26/11 terror attacks, pays tribute its way.

I witnessed the commemoration of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai that killed 166 people. I had an interview scheduled at the Taj, where the attacks took place, that morning. But then there was a last-minute change. It was an hour-and-a-half taxi ride from Bandra to Colaba, and on my way, there were tribute signs all over. Billboards stood in the middle of the streets paying homage to the dead souls and appreciating the efforts of security personnel. Newspapers carried several stories, television channels were flooded with same. Outside some houses were small tributes on sheets on paper and at railway stations (Churchgate station, from where I boarded the train on my way back to Bandra) booths were set up to commemorate one of the darkest days in Indian history.

But amid everything, it was everyday life in Mumbai; it was like any other day. The traffic was congested (I reached my interview ten minutes late), people were rushing toward work, the trains were packed. But deep down, it would be difficult for the Mumbaikars to forget the day and the hours that followed (60 hours of terror, as many proclaim) because they lived those hours and it’s a part of their lives.

Shifting gears to my life now. Interestingly, I’ve been working on a lot of fun stuff– interviewed three Bollywood actresses, Neha Dhupia, Minissha Lamba and Mugda Godse; Tommaso Cavalli, Roberto Cavalli’s son, for the launch of Roberto Cavalli vodka in India; a chit chat with Sabira Merchant, the one who initiated the disco club, Studio 29, in Mumbai; and American singer-songwriter Terra Naomi.

Needless to say about the parties that revolved around these interviews–the Roberto Cavalli party, the Studio 29 back to the 80s party and Terra’s performance and a party on a bar crawling bus!

Terra Naomi
Go Quietly •••½
Self-released

When Wears The Trousers interviewed Terra Naomi a couple of years ago, just prior to the release of her major-label debut Under The Influence, she came across as a smart, charismatic, profound and politically aware young woman on the verge of being stifled by the elephant in the room – the room being a plush office, the elephant being the Island Records rep who loomed in the corner throughout, interjecting whenever the conversation approached any topic even vaguely controversial. For a self-made woman who’d amassed a gigantic fanbase as one of the first artists to really make use of YouTube in its infancy, a woman who had pulled herself out of a teenage drug addiction, a woman who had single-handedly booked four US tours and whose signature tune ‘Up Here’ proudly proclaimed “I am who I am and if you don’t like it then fuck you, man”, this nannying seemed tragically at odds with everything she stood for. And sure enough, the album, when it surfaced, was just as obvious a mismatch and sank without a trace.

Two years down the line, the self-released Go Quietly ushers in an unapologetically frank new era for Naomi, a back to basics epiphany that brings the spotlight full circle onto her vocals and unadorned songwriting. In an admirable display of restraint, only one track (‘Job Well Done’) appears to take aim at music industry bigwigs, though Naomi pulls no punches in setting out her agenda. Too fierce for maudlin passive aggression, she whips out a fast-strummed acoustic and crammed-full couplets for a barbed hit and run that will almost certainly collide with its subjects’ deaf ears. Elsewhere, ‘Nobody Knows You Anymore’ could be interpreted partly as a reflection on retreating to the States after Under The Influence tanked and confronting the reality of starting again on her own, but perhaps that’s just projecting.

What is certain is that Naomi has retained her knack for tossing out an arresting lyric. On ‘Bad Time To Fall In Love’, which plays like a long-lost acoustic Blondie outtake, she “can play it cool / calm as a heart attack”, while the damning ‘Patron Saint Of Strippers’ opens fire at predating playboys with lines like, ”The last one gave you STDs / at least one’s a treatable disease / well, that’s just the cost of helping everyone.” So far, so good, but Naomi gets additional credit for loosening up and trying out different styles, even when she doesn’t quite pull them off. At the top of the class is ‘You For Me’, an album highlight with all the vocal playfulness of Jaymay and Regina Spektor, while the short straw goes to ‘Suffer For Her Sins’, a slightly embarrassing misstep that would better suit a singer like Lucinda Williams or Holly Golightly.

As a tether-testing, range-finding exercise, Go Quietly is encouraging; as a standalone listening experience, it’s an adequate precursor to the real deal that’s coming next year. By then one hopes that Naomi will have figured out what works best and will finally make the album that Under The Influence should have been. As if to underpin that hope, Go Quietly finishes on a new version of ‘Say It’s Possible’ (a hidden bonus track), the song that started this whole crazy business for Naomi in the first place. For when you have raw talent and unshakeable intent, almost anything is.

Maybe one of the objectives is to reintroduce you to something what has been forgotten lately, or for some of you may even be unknown yet. Cover jam record of Sulime’s – Santeria performed by Terra Naomi in her hotel room works as one of the best mood lifters for me. What do you think about this tune?

I wrote a journal for my last.fm profile. I answered 50 questions about my top 50. I thought about putting it here, because I am planning some things, which are too good to be just on my last.fm profile. So, that’s why I am starting with my Top 50 – Q&A.

1. What’s your favorite song by 15? (Ani DiFranco)
I can’t decide between “You had Time” and “What If No One’s Watching”

2. How did you get into 20? (Fiona Apple)
Through the movie “Pleasantville”. Her cover of “Across the Universe” was played at the end.

3. Who is your favorite member in 1? (Rilo Kiley)
Of course Jenny Lewis.

4. What’s your favorite lyric bit by 29? (Damien Rice)
I don’t know. Though I listen to some lyrics, I never really listened to Damien’s. Maybe I should start now.

5. Have you ever seen 22 live? (Jeff Buckley)
No. Sadly he’s dead, because I really wanted to see him one time.

6. What’s your favorite album from 10? (Kate Nash)
“Made of Bricks”. The only one by now.

7. Do you own any merchandise from 3? (Ingrid Michaelson)
No, except the songs.

8. What is a good memory you have of 7? (Jenny Lewis)
Seeing her live in Berlin in October 2008. This was the first time I really wanted to see somebody live and it was a good time.

9. Is there a member of the same age as you in 2? (Julia Marcell)
Well, Julia is a bit older than me. Sadly, because she’s cute

10. When did you first get into 8? (Emiliana Torrini)
Radio Eins played one of her Berlin concerts in the radio once, before she released “Fisherman’s Woman”. I listened to it and started to fall in love with her.

11. Who likes 4 along with you? (Death Cab for Cutie)
My older sister likes them. And probably the rest of the indie world as well.

12. Which song did you first hear from 16? (Sharon Little)
“Follow That Sound”. Heard it first on the TV show “The Cleaner”.

13. What song made you fall in love with 5? (Metric)
“Monster Hospital” – the first song I heard from them.

14. Which song do you not like by 18? (Elliot Smith)
Difficult. I don’t know. The songs are almost the same and bring the same reaction to me: quietness, goodness…

15. Why do you like 14’s songs? (She & Him)
I started to listen to them because of Zooey Deschanel. And I started to listen to M. Ward, after I discovered She & Him. She & Him is cute music, I like her voice and the cover songs are good.

16. Where did you first hear 6? (Terra Naomi)
On YouTube. I think it was “Close To Your Head”.

17. How long was 19 a singer before you liked them? (Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins)
Jenny Lewis sings since 1999 or so, I started to like her mid 2006…

18. Does 13 have a song that gives you a bad memory? (The Hot Toddies)
No. I don’t know them for too long.

19. When did you get into 17? (Avril Lavigne)
While I was in high school. Some others were listening to her, I started, too. It must be a year after she released “Let Go”.

20. How long have you been into 9? (Sia)
I don’t know. Three years maybe.

21. If 11 had a concert 300 miles away, would you drive there to see them? (Lykke Li)
Definitely. If I had the money to travel. I still want to see her live some day.

22. How many CDs do you own of 12? (Lily Allen)
Both her albums and some EPs.

23. Does 21 have a song that makes you cry? (Coldplay)
No, I’m not that emotional enough. But “Spies” and “Trouble” would be the favorites.

24. Does 27 have a song that makes you happy? (Amy Macdonald)
Not really. Maybe all of the more rock-y songs.

25. Does 23 have a song that makes you smile? (KT Tunstall)
“Black Horse and the Cherry Tree”. Always fascinating how she is performing that song.

26. What’s the last song you’ve listened to from 28? (Sophie Zelmani)
I don’t know. I listened to the album “Love Affair” last time.

27. Is there a song by 32 that you’ve listened to more than 30 times? (Explosions in the Sky)
No, not yet. But “Your Hand in Mine” could be it.

28. What is a song from 50 that you’ve only listened to once? (The Weepies)
“A Painting By Chagall”

29. Is there a song you are sick of hearing by 24? (Jenny Owen Youngs)
Well, I listened too often to “Hot In Herre”, but I still like it – so, no.

30. What song got you into 40? (Audrey)
“Mecklenburg”

31. What is your favorite single by 25? (The Ting Tings)
“Shut Up and Let Me Go”

32. If 49 hated you, what would you do? (Lenka)
I don’t care if she would hate me.

33. What would you say if 42 or one of the members from 42 asked you out? (Feist)
Mmh, Leslie is not really my type. But I would say yes, when do you have the chance to go out with her anyway?

34. Would you care if 41 had a boyfriend/girlfriend? (Kathleen Edwards)
No.

35. Who has the best voice in 46? (Fleet Foxes)
What is the name of the vocalist?

36. Do you think 26 is/are good looking? (Dido)
Yeah, Dido looks good. She looks even more hotter than I started to listen to her in 2001.

37. How many times have you listened to your favorite song by 36? (Bif Naked)
“Lucky” – hundreds of times.

38. How many CDs do you own of 30? (Amanda Palmer)
Well, her The Dresden Dolls albums and her debut album.

39. Is there a song from 38 that makes you mad? (Tori Amos)
No, I don’t really listen to her music that often…

40. Which member from 31 do you want to see go solo? If 31 is only one artist, what would you do if they joined a group? (Wir sind Helden)
Judith Holofernes was solo before her time in the band, but I want to see some new solo stuff from her.

41. What does your favorite song from 48 remind you of? (Placebo)
Hm, no reminders…

42. Did you hate 43 at first? (Colbie Caillat)
No. I loved her since first sight. Or listen.

43. Does your best friend also listen to 33? (M. Ward)
Nobody I know listens to M. Ward.

44. Do you think your parents would like 37? (Tina Dico)
I don’t know. My dad never listens to “newer” music and my mom doesn’t care what she is listening.

45. Does 47 have a song that makes you want to dance? (Nerina Pallot)
Not really. No.

46. Have you ever seen 34 in person? (Sara Bareilles)
Well, I saw her live once.

47. Do you like 44’s name? (Emily Jane White)
Simple name. Double name. Easy to remember. It’s good.

48. Is there someone in 45 that you want to go out with? (Aimee Mann)
Going out with Aimee Mann… Not really.

49. Do you know anyone that hates 39? (The Dresden Dolls)
I know nobody who doesn’t like them.

50. Have you ever danced to a song from 35? (Liz Phair)
Whip-Smart is really cool to dance, but I never danced to her music.

Terra Naomi
‘The Vicodin Song’ [new version]

A bona fide staple of LA singer-songwriter Terra Naomi’s repertoire of politically aware and conscientious pop-rock songs, ‘The Vicodin Song’ has come a long way since first appearing on her 2004 eponymous EP and then on 2006’s live recording, Virtually. By 2007, the rough and ready piano track about looking for a way out of one’s suffering had morphed into a more impassioned, more polished track that Island Records saw fit to tuck away as a hidden track at the end of Terra’s major label debut Under The Influence. The album pretty much flopped in the UK, and Terra herself has since admitted that she wasn’t happy with how things had transpired with making and promoting the record. For the upcoming follow-up, In Spite Of And Not Because, Terra has gone back to her independent ways, recording the album within a fortnight and producing it herself with two friends back in California.

‘The Vicodin Song’ defies the odds by cropping up yet again on the new album, this time given a full band treatment with drums and guitars that kick in around the 1:20 mark. It’s not the most radical makeover you’ll ever have heard but the song still sounds fresh, especially when the soaring multi-layered choir of backing vocals arrive in the final minute. Besides, Terra’s not asking us to pay for something we essentially already have multiple times over – this one’s on the house. Check out www.getfreevicodin.com for her funny spin on the giveaway. That said, we don’t allow direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription-only drugs in the UK so Vicodin is far from a household name over here (it’s a strong painkiller, in case you’re wondering). If In Spite Of And Not Because succeeds commercially, that could change for both the tablet and the artist. MP3 after the jump.

“Say It’s Possible” was song that was first introduced via Youtube video in June of 2006. It was the first single of singer/songstress Terra Naomi. She had written the song just five days previous. The YouTube video garnered millions of hits. The song has been covered on YouTube in a variety of different styles and languages. The song/video won the first YouTube Video Award in the category Best Music in 2007.

Here, Jay Brannan and Terra team up for a duet that appears to take place at a small intimate setting or listening party singing her original hit single.

Brannan, himself, built his music career by performing songs in his studio apartment and posting them on Youtube and on his personal web site. In March 2007, Brannan provided four of his songs for sale on Myspace. These were followed by his first EP “Unmastered” and his first full length album Goddamned, produced by Will Golden, released on iTunes July 1, 2008.

so. hello. i have been hard at work in the background writing some new poetry. setting my writing standards a bit higher and looking to challenge myself and my vocabulary and my perspective and my presentation. it’s been… complex.

taking a note from buddy wakefield’s book; i’m sharing here portions of unfinished works. these will become full poems eventually. some day soon. and i will record them and post them either here or on my myspace page.

as of late, i have just been trying to absorb the world around me and to enhnace my social shortcomings. and based on my doctor’s recommendations, i’ve also been trying to be healthier and lose weight. he said “you should lose weight,” and i wanted to say, “you make it sound so optional.”

here are works unfinished, as yet unbound

i have two 74 megapixel cameras built in to this cranium
the exposure is impeccable; the vision unimpaired,
and the old me is a photograph i have never seen

that sound you hear when i am silent
that is a pin drop, dropping
ripples
and on some level the volume of this moment
echoes through barriers we have yet to mend,

i once shared a maritime border with a boy so afraid of water
he had trouble waving,
lucky for him i had spent the entirety of my life wading and waiting
for someone to save

even though my heart is a tomb that does not believe in resurrections

in my most negative moment
my body is a hearse
this heart is a corpse
and this life is a roadtrip from funeral parlor to graveyard,
so that i may have spent my life in the company of mourners,
who loved me.

in my most positive moment
my body is a universe
this heart is hatch shell located on the south bank of the charles river
swelling with the sounds of the boston pops
and this life is everything leading up to the big bang,
so that i may have spent my life in the company of creation,

further proving that before there was love,
there was an ominous gaping hole in the universe

and that, is where i learn that some people use ego as a flotation device,
so that when the water levels rise, they stay afloat,
meanwhile the rest of us take deep breaths and submerge ourselves
as we wax hypnotic
about how we’re down here lookin’ for gold,
searching for the lost city of at last, us
we’re down here lookin’ for the ship we sank confidence,
at last, us, pretending
we’re down here discovering
undiscovered species,
when the truth is as clear as my lack of gills,
we’ll be up for air soon — egos
just waitin’ on the low tide
to carry us all back to believing in our selves.

on a long enough timeline the entirety of my life can be made to look like i was nothing more than a moment,
an ink blot, scattered, and if you blink you might miss me
and there is no scroll bar or backspace
there is no refresh button or restart,
so open your eyes, get comfortable and pay attention
it’s time to go outside and watch the sunset
then come back to this place of rest where we can destroy it figuratively.

———-

in the midst of waiting for me to do something profound or to write something life-changing, which will take a lifetime and may never actually happen, you should venture down a few other avenues. i highly recommend that you devote some of your precious attention span to jake walden, juliette commagere, terra naomi, amy macdonald & those involved with the elephant engine high dive revival.

with fertility & concentration,
Relax.

the thing about los angeles is that it often gets to feeling like this city doesn’t have much

the thing about los angeles is that it often gets to feeling like this city doesn’t have much to offer in the form of arts or culture. but the thing about los angeles, the thing you learn over time, is that this city is rich with artistic value, you just have to look closer. and when you do, you find gems.

one such gem can be found anytime terra naomi plays hotel cafe.

as a venue hotel cafe lends itself to an open, intimate relationship between crowd and crowd-pleaser. there are numerous talented acts who take to the stage at hotel cafe and fascinate their audience. but there is something about terra naomi’s presence that puts her in the upper echelon of singer-songwriters. i know this may sound lofty and a tad cliche but whether she is playing solo, or with a little backup, terra always delivers a performance that promises inspirational depth and emotional fortitude.

as she says on her website, “i was conceived in a tent in missoula, montana, thanks to a cross country road trip and a broken condom, and the rest of my life has followed a similar path – unplanned, spontaneous, unexpected.”

with biographical information that includes references to the french horn and opera-singing, terra has a timeline of life-experience spent between ann arbor, new york city, los angeles, and london. to her credit she booked her own tours and drove herself around the united states for four years, she won the very first youtube “best music video” award in 2006 for her song ’say it’s possible’ and she performed solo for an audience of 75,000 at wembley stadium for the live earth concert.

most endearing, or perhaps most intriguing, is that terra has already had a deal with a record label and she has recorded an album, an album which she didn’t like, and knowing this she prevented it from being released in the united states. this speaks volumes about her character and her skillset. thus it comes as no surprise that her website and her live sets are decorated with reminders of the importance of being true to yourself.

so she has set herself on task to record her next album. “this time around,” she says, “my music will be exactly the way i want it to be. as it should have been the first time.”

during her performance last night at hotel cafe she played a handful of her older songs, some written in london, some available on the aforementioned album, she covered the verve’s ‘the drugs don’t work’ and she played a few new songs that she charmingly promised would appear on her new album along with a full-band version of the crowd favored ‘the vicodin song.’

it’s gems like this that make living in los angeles worth while.

Terra’s voice is similar to Alanis’. I have no idea how I stumbled across this song, but I couldn’t be more happy to do so, it is one of my most played tracks, and I can’t have enough it. I hope you lot enjoy it as much as I do.
