We have had quite a few requests to provide décor ideas to hide unsightly air conditioning units in gardens. Badec Bros Deco specializes in feature walls, such as gabion feature walls. These designer walls are ideal to hide air conditioning units, unsightly views, or ugly old walls, without having to remove the existing wall.

We manufacture our gabion walls from 30mm x 3mm angle iron, which is welded together to ensure a strong frame. Then we weld strong, steel mesh onto the frame to create the shape of the wall. Once the hollow wall structure has been manufactured, we install it on site and fill it with pebbles, slate stone or chunky quartzite gravel.

Alternatively, we can also construct mild steel feature walls and add intricate detail to the surface of the steel to decorate it. There are three finishes to choose from. We can powder coat the feature wall in any colour imaginable, or we can apply mild steel finish or a rusted finish. Our powder coating is SABS approved.

Badec Bros Deco can also manufacture mild steel screens. These screens can be used to create privacy or to hang Cubedec hanging pots or hanging sculptures onto. We can customize our mild steel screens to any size and shape and with a wide range of finishes, such as powder coating in any colour, mild steel finish or a rust effect or even wooden cladding.

I had a few hours to kill before a meeting yesterday so I wandered over to Central Park. I’d gone there planning to take pictures of trees, but was drawn to the street musicians instead (finding bare trees at The Mall swayed things that way).

There was Boris, the saxophone player from somewhere near Argentina. When I told him I hadn’t heard of his town, he kindly told me I needed to review my geography (which is true). On a good day he makes more than $100. On a slow one, like yesterday, he expected to make no more than $80. I hadn’t taken three shots before he started talking to me… and kept talking to me, which is why I have no decent pictures of him in action. I guess you’ll have to take my word for it.

Then there was the double bassist under the Terrace by the Bethesda Fountain. Using my nonexistent Russian vocabulary, or something that sounded Russian, I inferred from a conversation he was having with a passerby that his bass was 150 years old.

I sat near him to take pictures, with full intentions to exit past him. I somehow ended up staying a half hour, never making it to the other side.

Then, I was off to Brooklyn.

I call BS. Around lunchtime at La Terrasse by Merode, a sign clearly indicated that mussels were available inside, and my friends visiting from outside Belgium had quite the hankering for some mussels.

When we sat down on the pleasant outdoor terrace surrounded by hedges and asked for them, the waitress said that unfortunately they had just run out. C’est dommage! So instead we ordered the carbonnade (~12 euros), which is, for the record, visually appealing but much better elsewhere.

Ten minutes into our meal, a bunch of francophones came in to eat, and lo and behold, they received a bucket of mussels.

Blast! No mussels, my queue.

Maybe they had pre-ordered the mussels before coming in, but I don’t know. Maybe the afternoon waitress doesn’t like foreigners. Despite the charming atmosphere, the quality of the food is hit-or-miss here, anyway, so this adds one more reason to skip eating here sometimes. They once replaced the burger meat with a slab of meatloaf, which was pretty bad. Then again, the fried chicken burger is good. Ah, consistently inconsistent.

By Cara Sulieman

POLICE were last night carrying out a post mortem to try and establish how a pensioner died – amid fears his body could have been left lying in his council home for weeks.

The body of William Lynn, 70, was finally found by officers who entered his house in the Clermiston area of Edinburgh after being tipped off by worried council workers.

They couldn’t get in touch with him over months of unpaid rent and called in officers to investigate.

Lothian and Borders Police would last night say only that the circumstances surrounding his death remained “unexplained”.

Alarm raised

Locals claimed Mr Lynn lived in the house with his son Andrew Lynn, 40, who was recently seen walking the old man’s beloved greyhound dog.

However neighbours said the pensioner himself had not been seen in public for around two months.

Police confirmed they had spoken to the son following the find, however said they could not comment further while inquiries were ongoing.

The alarm was finally raised when a housing officer from Edinburgh City Council was unable to get in touch with the pensioner and got no answer at the property.

Neighbours in the quiet residential street said that the pair were “reclusive” and that it was normal for them to go days without seeing any sign of life at the house in Parkgrove Terrace.

“Reclusive”

Mr Lynn’s immediate neighbour, who did not want to be named, said that she had seen Andrew walking his father’s greyhound around two weeks ago.

She said: “The last time we saw Andrew was at night when we were coming home. He was coming out of the house with the dog but turned around and went back in when he saw us.

“The last we saw of Billy must have been around two or three months ago now.

“But that wasn’t unusual. They were both quite reclusive and we never saw them or spoke to them.

“Our families were friendly when the kids were younger but in the last few years it’s just been a case of saying hello in the street.”

“Downhill”

A few doors down, neighbour Peter Lockhart said that Mr Lynn’s health had “gone downhill” since his wife’s death 15 years ago.

The 72-year-old said: “Billy had lived here a long time, he was here when I moved here in 1962. I used to work with his wife Diana at the Burtons Biscuits factory.

“When she died that’s when he started to kept to himself more. I think his health went a bit downhill as well.

“But he always seemed well enough for a man of his age – he had shakes down one side of his body but he was still out walking the dog.

“Last time I saw Billy was about two months ago. I’ve seen his son about since then, perhaps three weeks after that.

“He loved his dogs – he used to have two, a black one and a grey one, but the black one barked a lot and made a lot of noise and neighbours complained so he had to get rid of it.

“He walked the dog really early in the morning. I was up a couple of times at about 5am and saw him going down the road with the dog.

“The police took it away on Tuesday when they came round.”

“Unexplained”

Police set up a command unit in the street and carried out door to door inquiries yesterday.

It was understood they are not looking for anyone else in connection with Mr Lynn’s death.

A police spokesperson said: “Police are investigating after the body of a 70-year-old man was found in Parkgrove Terrace, Edinburgh on Tuesday morning.

“At this stage the death is being treated as unexplained, with enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death at a very early stage.”

Meanwhile the discovery has caused distress among the residents of the street.

“Concerned”

One neighbour living across the street from Mr Lynn, who did not want to be named, said: “I just know Mr Lynn has died but there must be something suspicious about it or the police wouldn’t be here.

“It’s very quiet round here which is why everyone is surprised as what has happened.”

A spokesman for Edinburgh City Council confirmed that their staff had raised the alarm.

They said: “One of our housing officers became concerned when they visited the home of a tenant and raised the alarm with the police, who are now investigating the death.”

The creative team at Badec Bros Deco was recently commissioned to manufacture a stainless steel, cascading water feature for a client. Firstly, we created seven Cubedec B pots – troughs – in varying dimensions from grade 304 stainless steel.

The stainless steel sheets were folded and welded together along a single seam line, to create a flawless overall appearance. Once all of the troughs were manufactured, we installed the water feature on site, with the lowest trough being filled with black pebbles.

We can also manufacture this stunning water feature from mild steel and finish it in one of three finishes, namely: a mild steel finish, rusted finish and powder coating finish. There are literally hundreds of different colours to choose from for your powder coating finish and this finish is SABS approved. Our Cubedec water features can be customized to any size and shape. As our CEO, Edrich Badenhorst likes to say; “The sky is not the limit.”

Please feel free to contact us with your ideas and we will be sure to bring them to fruition. We love a creative challenge!

Badec Bros Deco has manufactured a wide range of impressive Cubedec pots over the past 2 years. One of the latest designs in our innovative collection of products is a Cubedec A slim pot with mirror mosaic detail.

Our Cubedec A slim pots are manufactured from 1,6mm mild steel sheets, which we fold and weld. All our pots are manufactured with a round inner steel bar to support plastic planters, which come standard with all our pots, unless otherwise specified. You can choose between three finishes for your Cubedec pot: rusted, mild steel finish, or powder coating in any colour you can dream of. Our powder coating is SABS approved. Once the chosen finish has been applied, we seal the pot to protect it from rusting.

We can customize these stylish planters to any size and shape and finish them off in a wide range of materials.

Should you wish to have your very own signature Cubedec A slim mirror pot, Cubedec bench with your laser-cut logo, modern pergola, Cubedec steel dustbin, interactive sculpture, Cubedec shelving, Cubedec miniature Zen garden box, 2010 Soccer World Cup décor, mild steel lamp shade, mild steel screen, gabion counter, narration stand, gabion light cage, gabion bollard, gabion water feature, sculptured living wall, sculptured flagpoles, unique pot and drip tray, customized sculpture, trendy steel décor with your company logo emblazoned on it, mild steel inspirational slogan, steel laser-cut signage, mild steel mould, Cubedec Pot, hanging sculpture, gabion pot, gabion wall or gabion terrace, wooden or steel feature poles, bar code trellis, Cubedec water feature, arch, sculpture or trellis, please feel free to contact our energetic and knowledgeable sales representative, Mareleen van Zijl, on her cell phone at 078 800 5112, the office number at 012 460 7990, or via e-mail at mareleen@badecbros.com

Finally, and not a moment too soon, our wonderful new roof garden is finished. We are now getting to enjoy the creative touches of planting and colour. We have already christened it with its first Tango lesson. It is now a million times better for a graceful swivel in a pair of stilhettos!

As the long Argentine summers get hotter and more humid, the rooftop is where those in the know choose to spend their time and here at Abode it is no different. Huge BBQ’s and goblets of gorgeous wines are always the core activity of an Abode Christmas and New Year.

This Christmas we are planning a Christmas day spectacular for guests with a divine dinner of excessive proportions with all the meat and poultry cooked the traditional Argentine way – on the BBQ of course. Zoe will be making a vast range of side dishes, chutneys and deserts to satisfy the sweet cravings and of course it will all be washed down with a tasting menu of some of the country’s finest wines and bubbly.

The week before Christmas we will be holding our annual Christmas party complete with Carols and silly hats. It has become a fixture in the diary of our expat friends and Argentine neighbours alike. Its a great opportunity to meet a myriad of interesting people with a range of perspectives on life in Argentina.

Below you will find a before, during and after photo log of the work and the finished result. Any suggestions for Argentine native planting would be gratefully received.
