L’oggetto, inoltre, deve seccarsi molto lentamente.

Europalia.

Say Xian and you talk about the terracotta warriors. The army of 8,099 life-size soldiers and horses

Say Xian and you talk about the terracotta warriors. The army of 8,099 life-size soldiers and horses is one of the most impressive tourist attractions in the world. But the ancient capital of China has more to offer.

Ancient capital? Yes, Xian (also Xi’an and in the past known as Chang’an) was the Empire’s main city from the 11th century BC to the early 10th century AD. A total of 73 emperors ruled China from here. Located between rivers and mountains in the southern part of Central China’s Guanzhong Plain, it was also the eastern starting-point of the famous Silk Road that connected the Far East with Europe. An historically important city, in other words, and luckily much of its historical and cultural heritage has been preserved.

Notwithstanding the glorious past Xian is a modern city and Central China’s largest industrial center. It is believed Xian was the world’s first city with a population over 1 million. Now 8 million live here.

The tourist industry has quickly developed in recent years and you can now find hotel rooms for any budget. Many eateries still offer Chinese cuisine, but fast food restaurants have become serious competitors and are popular amoung young people. For the best deals on hotels in Xian, check out http://www.hotelscombined.com/City/Xian.htm?a_aid=4d780272 There’s so much to see in this ancient capital that I can’t list it all here, so let’s just mention a few highlights:

The city wall

The oldest part of Xian, dominated by a huge bell tower, is surrounded by an ancient city wall with gates at the eastern, western, southern and northern side. It’s pretty wide and an attraction in itself: you can hire a bike to ride on it! But you can also walk, on the wall and around it. The wall’s illuminated at night – you’ve got to see that!

Big Wild Goose Pagoda

This is the city’s symbol. This seventh century pagoda (64 m high) is found at Ci’en Temple and offers a great view.

Great Mosque of Xian

One of China’s oldest mosques was built 685-762 at the eastern end of the Silk Road. There are still 60,000 Muslims in the city who use this mosque as their place of worship. It’s subdivided into four courtyards and renowned for its beautiful art work.

Terracotta army

The terracotta warriors were discovered in vaults in 1974 and are now called the Eighth World Wonder. They have their own museum with a floor space of 20,000 square meters. Go and see the army. Standing face to face with the warriors is a mind-blowing experience!

If you have the time, this is the third city in China (next to Beijing and Shanghai) you must see!

Java scalability specialist Terracotta has acquired the intellectual property associated with Quartz

Java scalability specialist Terracotta has acquired the intellectual property associated with Quartz, a popular open-source job scheduler, part of Terracotta’s mission to integrate common open-source Java application components into its middleware solution. Terracotta has already integrated SQL-query service Hibernate, and it acquired popular distributed caching solution Ehcache in August. These integrations make Terracotta a more formidable competitor in the quest to manage data in cloud or scale-out infrastructures, where it battles relational databases, proprietary caching solutions like Oracle Coherence and, increasingly, flash-based solutions.

As more Java applications make their ways into large-scale environments and private clouds, Terracotta wants to make it easier for users to scale these critical components. The company bases its business model around the “scale continuum” – easing the transition from one node to several nodes to, ultimately, a virtualized cloud environment. Potentially important on this front is the fact that Quartz is embedded into application framework SpringSource, which VMware recently acquired. Terracotta and VMware (s vmw) have partnered on customer implementations in the past, and the synergies between these two vendors and their new assets should make running Java applications in the cloud easier than ever thought possible.

Despite the fact that Quartz is a job scheduler, the database market might see the biggest effects from this acquisition. Terracotta’s bread and butter is in-memory data management, and bringing Quartz’s large user base into the fold exposes Terracotta’s method to an even greater audience. Quartz has tens of thousands of deployments already, including within companies like Vodafone (s vod), Cisco (c csco) and Adobe (s adbe), and it is embedded in popular open-source application frameworks such as JBoss and the aforementioned SpringSource.

The push is on to make as many art works as we can for our December show and sale. Because clay tak

The push is on to make as many art works as we can for our December show and sale. Because clay takes time to dry and has a longer process, the StudioWorks artists have been concentrating on making small sculptures and ornaments. It’s about as close to Santa’s workshop as we are likely to see. While we are working, it is also important to try and have a bit of fun along the way! I think we do. The first image is of clay ornaments drying on a table. Julie Baldyga’s famous women singers series hangs on a wall in the background.

Here we have artist Sally Hardman inscribing a design onto a terracotta tile. The StudioWorks artists also made decorations from a low-fire white clay as well. Staff artist, Vickey Reed, does a good job of teaching many different hand-building techniques. Here’s a detail of some of the small, red clay sculptures made over the course of the week.

These pieces were made by several different artists. Among this grouping are sculptures made by Carol Thorp, Eric Huggins, Jeremy Smith, Natalie Lanier and more. The next step will be to bisque these pieces in the kiln. After that, they will be glazed and fired a final time under high heat.

The title of this post promised turkey and here it is! This is a sculpture that Julie Baldyga recently made and it’s hollow and drying slowly. I hope this turns out because everyone who sees it gets a big smile on their face. There are pastel drawings that proceeded the sculpture. The smaller pastel is on newsprint and the larger image was made of better quality paper. I forget the person’s name who is reaching for the turkey, but Julie likes to put her friends into her artworks.

These drawings correspond closely with one another. Of late, Julie has been using a dark background with star patterns. In her singer series, the star designs also become stage lights and photo flashes. One last image of Julie’s work table. Below the portrait of “Doris Day” are small, bisqued clay heads that Julie has painted with acrylics. It’s a comical sight seeing these figures with their hands on their chins resting in a plastic dish!
