Another meme participation, this weeks found on Meet Me at Mikes has been chosen as Shelley from Kate, her  theme is “My collection” – therefore here is part of my collection of wire haired fox terriers I have in the throughout the studio space. I thought I’d like to share it. My favourite is the small lead piece very battered with al the paint peeling, but I just love him.

Of all the sitcoms from the 90’s that are still shown syndication, this is about the only one I still find funny.

I had the pleasure of working with Rachel, a dedicated volunteer with Rover Rescue of Redondo Beach. She attempted fostering but wasn’t very good at it! Pookie became a part of her family! Who could resist Pookie. Here are a few of Miss Ellies favorites. Thanks Rachel and adorable kids for a very rewarding photo shoot. The “kids” had so much personality!!

Bradford is unstoppable when it comes to tennis balls.

Our beloved farm doggie, Bounce.

Bounce is another vital member of our team. As well as an endless source of company and cuddles, she’s a vigilant guard dog, an expert ratter and an effective snake repellant.

Far from being afraid, our horses can’t get enough of Bounce and are forever trying to smell and nuzzle her.

When we take the 4WD to the top paddock, Bounce often tears along beside us – a white streak glimpsed through the tall grass.

When Bounce wants to ride, she can leap six times her height to make it through an open door. You’ll often see her on the back seat; front paws on the arm rest, face out the window, checking that the herd is safe.

After posing for this photo, Bounce leapt off the big hay roll as if it were no higher than a doormat. She ain’t called Bounce for nothing!

Het was feest voor onze Jack Russell Terrorist! Tijdens een kort weekeinde in Drenthe greep onze jachthond-in-pocketformaat de kans: ze ’sneakte’ in de vroege ochtend naar buiten en rende opgewekt het mistige landschap in. Om pas na een geruime tijd bij ons terug te keren met een blik van “ik-wist-niet-dat-jullie-mij-misten” en haar vacht duidelijk vol grijsgekleurde sporen van een ferme duik in een konijnenpijp. De lokale eekhoorntjes en konijntjes zaten ongetwijfeld nog na te bibberen in hun nestjes. Weer terug bij ‘haar’ roedel kroop madam lekker in haar bench met de genoeglijke blik van vrijheid op haar snuit.

Pienter en opgewekt
Onze Jack Russell is een schat. Ze luistert eigenlijk alleen als het haar uitkomt, ze is erg pienter en opgewekt, superactief, onvermoeibaar, gezellig maar een beetje dominant (zelfs na twee puppycursussen) en ze heeft een lekker koppig karakter, maar we willen haar voor geen goud kwijt. Ons meisje is er eentje van stand: een échte rashond dus. En precies in de juiste verhouding.

Heel ver weg stamt ze af van de negentiende eeuwse Trump, de kleine wit-bruine terriër van dominee John – bijgenaamd Jack – Russell. Russell kocht het beestje van een lokale melkboer toen hij aan Blundell’s School en de Universiteit van Oxford studeerde. Het teefje Trump stond aan de basis van een nieuw ras van ‘werkende terriërs’ of ‘jachtterriërs’. Het bleken écht jachthonden in pocketformaat. Niet-agressieve beestjes met een geweldig uithoudingsvermogen en een enorme moed, die uitermate geschikt waren voor de jacht op vossen, otters en ander klein wild.

Twee variëteiten
Dominee Russell ontwikkelde met Trump een terriërstam, die paste bij zijn behoefte aan een hond die met de grotere Foxhounds kon meelopen. Hij creëerde hondjes die onder de grond konden gaan om vossen en ander wild te laten ’springen’. De Foxhounds konden daarna hun slag slaan. Door de fokinspanningen van Russell ontstonden er twee variëteiten: een grotere, meer vierkante hond (de Parson Russell Terriër) en een kleinere, iets langer gebouwde hond (de Jack Russell Terriër).

Roemrucht jachtverleden
De Jack Russells bleven échte jachthonden tot aan de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Toen zakte de vraag naar kleine en compacte jachthondjes in. Dit zorgde er voor dat er minder Jack Russells kwamen. Tegelijkertijd veranderde de Jack van een jachthond in een gezelschaps- of familiehond. En dat zo’n familiehondje af en toe weer denkt aan het roemruchte jachtverleden van haar voorgangers… Tja, dat gebeurt soms. In Drenthe op een mistige zondagochtend bijvoorbeeld.

Meet Lennon, Scooble’s featured Pet of the Week! Lennon is a three year old terrier mix in need of a loving forever home. As you can see, he is quite the looker. He is a bit bigger than he looks (a whole 33 pounds worth.) Lennon gets along well with other dogs, but would rather hang with the adults. He’s already neutered and micro chipped.

Lennon can go home with his new family the day he is adopted! His adoption fee is $100 which includes his neuter, vaccinations, deworming treatment, 1 free month of pet insurance, training DVD, and a free vet visit.

This is Bo, an American Pit Bull Terrier. Bo’s painting is BIG, 30×24″, and is acrylic on canvas. I’ve had the pleasure of hanging out with Bo many times, and he is a super sweet dog with soulful eyes and a big heart! Bo is CGC-certified, is a blood donor, and is frequently used to socialize new puppies, insecure dogs, and new owners. He is a wonderful breed ambassador and along with his owner is helping to give Pitties back the good reputation they so much deserve.

This page is intended as a brief overview of the breed, and should be only one of many sources the new or potential pit bull owner should investigate in order to understand the responsibility of owning this breed. Unlike almost any other breed, pit bull ownership comes with some unique responsibilities. As the owner of an American Pit Bull Terrier, your actions and those of your dog will affect not only yourself, but EVERY owner and EVERY dog of this breed. If you are thinking about getting a pit bull, please think about that before committing yourself to an American Pit Bull Terrier.”

A Word About Breed History

This bit of history will help explain much of the apparently
contradictory traits (to novices) common in this breed.

Much of a dog’s temperament relates to it’s breed history and genetic inheritance. I won’t go too deep into the history of the Pit Bull as there are many good books and websites that cover the origin and history of the breed. It is common knowledge however, that the Pit Bull breed was developed for blood sports: Bull baiting, bear baiting, and later, dogfighting. What is not common knowledge is that in the days of organized dogfighting, the handlers of the combatants were habitually IN THE PIT with the dogs for the duration of the fight. They were required to pick up and separate the dogs several times while the dogs were in full fight frenzy. Before the fight, the handlers were required to wash each other’s dogs, and after the fight, the badly injured dogs were often treated at ringside by strangers. Any dog that attacked or bit a handler (even if it was the other dog’s handler) or anyone else at any time was culled, often on the spot, and would never have been bred.

To Summarize the Proper Pit Bull Temperament 1. Pit Bulls are often dog-aggressive to one extent or another (this often shows up at or near sexual maturity). A dog that was previously non-dog aggressive may “turn-on” and suddenly doesn’t like other dogs of the same sex, or, for that matter, any dogs at all, even housemates they have been raised with. 2. Pit Bulls may exhibit intense “prey drive”, leading them to “stalk” small animals such as cats, rats, chickens, livestock, or other pets. 3. Pit Bulls are precocious and incomparable escape artists, who will often seem to squirt right out of a supposedly secure yard or enclosure. When coupled with # 1 and # 2, you can see why a responsible Pit Bull owner is a vigilant pit bull owner. 4. Pit bulls are intelligent, and most enjoy training, if it is done properly. This makes them excellent prospects for dog sports such as agility, obedience, weight pull, and Frisbee competitions. 5. Pit Bulls tend to LOVE people. All people. This makes them a poor choice for a “guardian breed”. Most of them are simply too friendly to protect a house against strangers. 6. Pit bulls tend to be very “soft” with their family, meaning that they are eager to please their humans. They should not have to be “shown who’s boss”, but will thrive under “positive leadership”. A Pit Bull of proper temperament is a devoted and loving family member, inspiring immense loyalty to the breed. You will often hear a Pit Bull’s owner tell you that after owning one, they will never own any other breed. The Physical Pit Bull Built for performance, the pit bull is a medium sized, very muscular, short coated breed. The head is bricklike, the jaws strong and wide, the ears may be cropped or not (I prefer uncropped dogs for several reasons). The body is typically very strong, with a deep chest, powerful and proportionate hind end and solid legs. The overall impression should be of power and athleticism. This is not a dog for couch potatoes, as they require A LOT of training and exercise. With this breed it is important to remember to exercise both the dog’s body and mind. Remember, a tired pit bull is a happy pit bull and a bored pit bull is NOT a good thing! They will find some very inventive ways to entertain themselves that the owner may not like (often involving the garbage can, kitchen counter and cabinets, feather pillows, dirty laundry and various items of furniture). Remember also, that this is a VERY enthusiastic breed that may very well overwhelm young children or older people with it’s affection. This breed needs to be taught to sit and greet people calmly as it’s natural inclination will probably be to climb into their lap, put a paw on each of their shoulders, and attempt to wipe their face off with it’s tongue. Attempts to convince a full grown pit bull that it is too big to be a “lap dog” will, more often than not, fall on deaf ears if it was not taught “manners” as a puppy. Do not allow your puppy to do anything you don’t want your adult dog to do (eg climb on the couch, sleep in the bed, invade your lap, etc.).
