Title: “That octopus returned to the sea without being eaten”

Description: The imagery of the octopus-man is inspired by mythical and religious imagery, but also in an interest genetic modification and current arguments surrounding genetically modified foods. I find myself wary of gm food but strangely attracted to the fantastical possibilities of genetic engineering and modification. These ideas can be seen in my other work including ‘Chimera 1 (Homo suricatta) – 2008′.

In the piece I am playing with a new style of stencil, drawing it specifically to be created as a stencil rather than just drawing and then converting to stencil on a computer afterward. My interest in street art mainly comes down to textures. I love the textures of walls and surfaces on the street and this influences my choice of materials, usually opting for found objects that have similar properties. I have used new materials for this piece and tried to reproduce the textures of the found materials I have used in the past. I like to use plywood in my pieces, just finding or buying a sheet of plywood seems to remind me of many days of my childhood spent scrounging and building skateboard ramps, you were always on the look out for a nice piece of ply and somehow 20 years on this instinct doesn’t seem to have gone away.

BIO

I am an artist based in Canberra, Australia. I dropped out of art school in the 90’s and after working an office job since then I have been re-inspired by the world of street art to start creating again.

I have moved away from my roots in photography and prefer instead to challenging myself to improve my drawing and investigate unfamiliar mediums such as paintings, stencil and screenprints.

I still use photography a great deal as a basis for many of my works.

I have recently exhibited at the 2008 Melbourne Stencil Festival and have work in collections in Australia, the UK, Japan and the Netherlands.
