James Allen’s ScribTeX just… works. You shove in TeX code and click and out pops a webpage with your typeset pages.

Probably I’ll be moving the math stuff back to Vlorbik On Math Ed. Now that I know how to… you know… post math on the web and all. Geez.

This just uploaded PDF is the end of my decade-spanning quest for a procedure for putting pages, typeset by me on my own computer, onto the web with my own computer. The tables are very ugly. This is because I had to kluge ‘em together by hand with no prior knowledge of how it’s really done, just to get something on the page. I was using plain TeX. It appears that LaTeX will have solved many of my problems. So I’ll have to learn the new ways and redo all my tables to reuse the files for my lecture notes from Dominican.

Meanwhile, I’ll experiment with TeX right here in the blog.

both my main teachers i loved.
pretty doggone undyingly as it turns out
though of mister ratts i think but seldom.
mary ann di baggio taught us math
and taught us well. *i* got a model
of “math teaching done right”.
also, though this had little to do
with miss di baggio directly…
her role was to provide access to equipment
and a receptive environment for us to
share our results in (no small thing
and indeed a very big thing and if
there were a heck of lot more of this
instead of a heck of lot less we wouldn’t
now be in a position of having to make
the events of 68 look like a party…
but i digress)… zines.
i did my first self-publishing
in di baggio’s class (with
andrew mcgarrell,
peter strickholm, and
tom hoffa (who appears
not to have a webpage):
twenty copies or so (at a guess)
of each of about four issues of GlOAT
(the lowercase L
is not a misprint). purple “spirit
master” one-side-to-a pagers. (dittos!)
i soon went on to do
(in “printings” of one;
i circulated these kid-by-kid
myself at school after drawing
‘em at home) the _ten_page_news_.
i revived the title years later,
beginning just before the zine boom
(before hypertext… so called e-zines
[and blogs and such]… captured those
easily lured by the easier softer way
of the dark side [including me alas]).
anyhow you get the idea: self-publishing
goes way back for me. i soon began doing
a zine *about* zines: _indy_unleashed_.
in this
TPN piece from 1998, i claimed
that “the ten page news is most
of my social life”… showing that
my interest in self-publishing
also goes way deep.
hypertext was a natural for me;
indeed mike cagle (linked-in profile) had given me
a copy of ted nelson’s
(seminal, self-published)

almost twenty years before the web
broke big (with graphical browsers).
i’ve recently rambled on this part
of my publishing autobiography already
(in my “about” page; not
necessarily a good place for it).
so. turning to algebra.
i majored in algebra in the sense
that i wrote my doctoral dissertation on it. so i trained
as a professor. and was one briefly.
and felt (and still feel) that it was
work i was “born to do”. but i soon
lost my professional rank and title.
after a year of death throes in the form
of never-even-an-interview applications
all over the country i quit trying and
worked freelance from then—1996—
till the day before yesterday. spring quarter.
as a teacher and tutor. and… ta-dah!
published _vlorbik_on_math_ed_
until the efforts to write up algebra
in blog format finally snapped
my patience (and i quit
blogging for five hot minutes).
part of the point of the turn-of-century
_ten_page_news_ was to have some extra-academic
use for the typesetting system…

and gone on to write exams and quizzes in.
as well as a set of lecture notes.
source files now lost. also for that
matter part of the point of _VME_ itself
was *also* to work with TeX.
it was harder than i thought it would be.
anyhow now i’m at it again.
wordpress i’ve only learned to do
little things on. and those badly.
but i’ve got a copy of the real now
on Legion (and it isn’t even bootlegged!).
leslie lamport claims that things
have stabilized recently qnd i’m
inclined to trust him even though
he evidently works for microsloth.
so far so good. i’m producing
pretty pages with unfamiliar ease. but i
can’t yet put .pdf’s online for all to see just now.
which is sort of strange. looks like google
had a page you could do it with easily.
for about a day. but this is conjecture.
by the time i got there they’d quit
taking on new users. some experimental deal.
all for this morning. what’s to eat?

Here’s something that might help avenge the travesty of Derek Jeter winning a Gold Glove: Aaron Hill and Adam Lind were named Silver Slugger Award winners yesterday. The awards, voted on by coaches around the league, are handed out to the players with the best “overall offensive value” at each position.

Of course, this also leaves me feeling slightly better about an otherwise horrible Jays season, though still not too optimistic about the one we’re about to embark on next April. At least we have our two mashers, though — Lind, who hit .305/.370/.562 (AVG/OBP/SLG) with 35 homers and 114 RBIs in 2009, may be in for a move to first base if Alex Anthopolous is able to move Lyle Overbay, while Hill (.286/.330/.499, 36 and 108) will keep doing his thing at second base.

Anyway, here’s the full list of Silver Sluggers:

American League: Joe Mauer (C), Mark Texeira (1B), Hill (2B), Evan Longoria (3B), Jeter (SS), Jason Bay (OF), Torii Hunter (OF), Ichiro Suzuki (OF) and Lind (DH). (Note how six of the nine were Gold Glovers, further supporting the assumed theory that the awards are given out to the best fielders that can hit. Does this mean Lind automatically becomes a Gold Glove contender?)

Not a Gold Glover in my books

Here’s something that doesn’t come as a shock, mostly because we’ve come to expect garbage like it: Derek Jeter was awarded a Gold Glove yesterday, despite having about as much range as Troy Glaus. Here’s the thing with Gold Gloves, though — they’re not given to the best fielders at each position, they’re given to average-to-good fielders that can hit (such is the reason Johnny McDonald will never win the award, even if he was a starter). That, and guys that make few errors, mostly because they don’t get to many balls. Jeter falls into both those categories, so maybe he’s perfect. Anyway, ESPN baseball genius Rob Neyer echos my sentiments in his SweetSpot blog (Well, maybe I should say I’m echoing his sentiments. Either way, we both think it’s stupid.)

Anyway, here’s the full list of American League Gold Glovers: Joe Mauer (C), Mark Texiera (1B), Placido Polanco (2B), Evan Longoria (3B), Jeter (SS), Torii Hunter (OF), Ichiro Suzuki (OF), Adam Jones (OF) and Mark Buerhle (P).

なんか変わるかなと思って，久しぶりに地元の図書館に行ってみました．
もちろん，勉強しに．
大学には行ってません．幾何コロキウムの講演はけっこう気になってたんですが，まずは自分のことをどうにかしないと，です．

縁石で

人が歩く音，ページを繰る音，幼児が叫ぶ声．雑音があふれてて，すごく集中できました多少雑音がある場所の方が往々にして集中できます，僕は．だから，電車の中はよく集中できるんだと思います(気づいたら寝てることがよくありますが)．
ただ，複雑な音でないとダメみたいです．同じ雑音でも，静かな部屋で物音がすると，とても音がはっきり聞こえてきてダメなんですよね．

そういえば，お昼を食べたあと，ふらっと図書館前の公園を散歩したら，アカゲラを見ました！近くに山ないのに，アカゲラがいるんだーと驚きました．

研究の進み具合は相変わらずですが，気分はいいです．
明日も行ってきます

latex-math-preview.elは相変わらず便利だ．前ブログでも度々 宣伝してるが．便利なので，いろんな人に使って欲しい．
ただし，上の数式ではxypic(xy.sty)を使ったが，usepackageのオプションで，

\usepackage[all,ps,dvips]{xy}

として普段はコンパイル(Windowsなら，latexmk.bat -dvi -ps，Ubuntuなら，latexmk -dvi -ps -pspdfを便利なので使っている)するが，上のusepackageのオプションだと，latex-math-previewがうまく動かない(dvipngの関係だろう)．プレビュー段階では，

\usepackage[all]{xy}

としておけば，latex-math-preview でプレビューできた．他にうまい方法があるかもしれないが．xy.styはdvipsを使わないといけないから，こういうことが起きる．

بالاخره تصمیم گرفتم وارد دنیای TeXnician‌ها شوم و حداقل چند صفحه‌ای را با TeX ایجاد کنم. خیلی وقت پیش با FarsiTeX آشنا شدم. سعی کردم اون را روی لینوکس نصب کنم اما به اون صورت نتونستم با اون کار کنم روزها گذشت تا همین چند روز پیش فرصت کردم توزیع‌های دیگر TeX را بررسی کنم. به پروژه‌ی XeTeX برخورد کردم که فارسی را پشتیبانی می‌کند. بعد از نصب اون روی Ubuntu 9.04 متوجه شدم که با بسته‌ی نرم‌افزاری TeX Live 2007ی که در مخازن Ubuntu 9.04 موجود هست تداخل دارد و مشکل درست عمل نمی‌کند. مجبور شدم که Tex Live 2007 را پاک کنم و نسخه‌ی به روزتر آن را به صورت دستی نصب کنم. برای نصب TeX Live 2008 به صورت دستی دو روش وجود دارد.

روش اول: بسته‌ی install-tl-unx.tar.gz را بارگیری کنید و پس از خارج کردن آن از حالت فشرده فرمان زیر را اجرا کنید:

cd /your/download/directory
sudo perl install-t

d (directory settings)
1 /usr/local/texlive/2008 (your installation directory)
2 /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local (your local hierarchy)

r (return to main menu)

i (install)

در صورتی که نصب از طریق خط فرمان را نمی‌پسندید می‌توانید نصاب را با install-tl -gui اجرا کنید. در این صورت باید بسته‌ی Perl/TK را نصب کرده باشید:

sudo apt-get install perl-tk

در ضمن در صورتی که minorی را می‌شناسید که به شما نزدیک‌تر است و سرعت بهتری دارد می‌توانید از فرمانی شبیه فرمان زیر استفاده کنید:

پس اجرای مراحل بالا نصاب TeX Live شروع به بارگیری بسته‌های مورد نیاز خود می‌کند. این عمل بسته به سرعت شبکه‌ی اینترنت شما متفاوت می‌باشد.
پس از نصب TeX Live باید متغیر‌های زیر را به پرونده‌ی ~./profile اضافه کنید:

حال یک بار Logout/login کنید و جهت اطمینان از نصب TeX Live در خط فرمان وارد کنید:

روش دوم در این روش می‌توانید ابتدا دی‌وی‌دی توزیع TeX Live را از اینجا دانلود کنید. پس از باز کردن آن از حالت فشرده فرمان زیر را جهت اتصال آن به سی‌دی‌رام اجرا کنید:

حال مثل روش اول می‌توانید TeX Live را نصب کنید.

What?

Alright, so A.J. Burnett brought it tonight. I’m guessing that means he gives up six runs in three innings next time out. The jackass righty won his first playoff game in four times out tonight, putting the clamps on Philly to lead the Yankees to a 3-1 lead and a series split through two. Burnett struck out nine and gave up just one run in seven innings in the most important start of his career. Man, this 32-year-old has potential.

The Phillies scored the game’s first run in the second on a two-out RBI single by Matty Stairs — a ball that went under the glove of Alex Rodriguez, who also went 0-for-4 with three Ks for the second night in a row. Keep bringing the playoff magic, big boy.

New York struck back with solo homers from real playoff hero Mark Texeira in the fourth and Hideki Matsui in the sixth, and added some insurance when Jorge The Rat drove home Brett Gardner with a single in the seventh. Pedro Martinez was charged with all three runs in six-plus innings of work, which certainly left Don Zimmer laughing, wherever he is these days.

Oh well, I picked the Yankees to win three times this series, so they might as well have taken this one. To my liking, it was a relatively contested game and hopefully a sign of more to come over the next week. Go Phillies!

Game 3 goes Saturday at Citizens Bank Park, with Little Andy (2-0, 2.37 this postseason and 119-1 in his playoff career, or so it seems — you know, because he’s so great) matching up with last year’s World Series MVP Cole Hamels (1-1, 6.75).

やっとできた．．．
昨日，書いた，mfフォントからpfbフォントに変換する話．
ubuntuなら楽チンだ～って思ってたんですが，，，
ターゲットは suetterlin フォントのmfフォントsuet14.mf．ドイツ語の筆記体です(参考:LaTeX によるドイツ語・日本語処理)．Lie代数に表現するとき，よくドイツ語の筆記体を使うので，TeXでも使えたらなぁと思ったのが始まりです．そのままでもいいんですよ，Type3フォントとしてPDFに埋め込まれることを除けば(それが許せなかったんですけどね)

そこで，Ubuntuで積年の恨みを晴らそうとばかりに，
まずはmftraceを試してみたけど，うまく通らない．．
あ，，textraceも通らない，，，
metatype1，fontforgeの使い方が分からん！

，，，どうやら，Windows用のtextraceがあるらしいとのこと．角籐先生ありがとう！
早速，家 帰って動かしてみるも，エラーが吐かれる．どうも｢tex.poolとの整合性が｣とか言われる．ねばってググったら，TeXのバージョンがちぐはぐらしい．新しいパッケージがあったり，古いのがあったり．だから，改めてw32texからTeXの上書きインストール→エラー解決と相成った

ばっちりtype1で埋め込まれている→suetterl_test.pdf
他の数式との相性はあまりよくないかな，，使える場面が限られてきそうではある．eulerフォントとの相性はどうかな？？僕はfourierフォントが一番好きなんだけれど．
pfbフォントのインストールは[qa:45276] Re: Type1作成ツール（Re: あたらしいフォントの定義について）:が参考になりました．感謝！！
ただ，今のバージョンのupdmapは

updmap –add suet14.map

(見づらいけど，”–add”はハイフンふたつ重ねて)などとするのが正しいようです．
追記：Ubuntuでは，–enable MixedMap=mapname.map の書式が正しかった．
自分の環境のWindowsでは上の通り．まぁ，–help すればすぐ分かることだけど．
