DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – On nearly every channel, there’s a reality television show.

And this season, more of them are being filmed right here in North Texas. “Texas Multi Mamas”, “Most Eligible Dallas”, “Texas Women”, “Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team”, just to name a few.

“Big Rich Texas” is another reality television show, which airs on The Style Network. It follows the lives of six Dallas socialites and their daughters.

CBS 11 News was granted exclusive access to go “behind the scenes” for season two. And cast member “Leslie” says this season is packed with even more drama than the last.

Leslie recently moved to North Texas from California. She says she was cast in “Big Rich Texas” thanks, in part, to her cousin “Connie” who was already part of the show.

Leslie says she has enjoyed most of her reality television experience, although it’s still hard getting used to the cameras. “I have opened my eyes in the morning and the camera is right there. And I’m like really? Can I just brush my teeth first?”

And even though the cameras aren’t rolling on the crew, Executive Producer Spike Van Briesen says their lives can be just as chaotic. “It’s kind of 24/7 for a lot of us. Your quickly finding something out. So your running to shoot it. It’s a marathon.”

We caught up with Big Rich Texas shooting a scene at Skintastic in Uptown Dallas, where the women rely on Doctor Jeffrey Adelglass to keep them looking their best.

Dr. Adelglass says he’s still getting used to his new found fame. “When I go out, wherever I go people come up to me and they’ve seen me on TV.”

Even thought it was a quick scene at Dr. Adelglass’ office, it takes hours of work to get everyone “ready to roll”.

Big Rich Texas premiered in July and quickly became the second highest rated new series on The Style Network.

But it seems like every reality series — from “Top Chef” to “Khloe and Lamar” just gets bigger and better when it’s shot in Texas.

Cynthia Smoot, who runs a Dallas advertising agency, is a huge fan of this new crop of shows and says there is a reason why millions of others tune in to watch them. “I don’t think it should be any surprise that one of the things Texas is known for is our larger than life personalities, everything is bigger and better here.”

Smoot says Dallas became an iconic city because of the 80′s television series “Dallas” and even that show is coming back. “I just think it’s great exposure for the city of Dallas, whether you love it. or love to hate it.”

And that exposure is generating millions of dollars. According to the city of Dallas, for every $1 million spent shooting, the economic impact is $2.3 million.

Van Briesen says North Texas has a draw for production crews, “It’s a major city. It’s an incredible city. It’s an incredible city to shoot. It’s scenic. There are a ton of visuals that you can get from Dallas itself for the show.”

Which means you’re more than likely to see more crews roaming around North Texas.

When I got home from school, it was General Hospital and Oprah. On Saturday, it was always those ridiculously addicting and often low-budget Lifetime movies. At the time, I didn’t really think much about the fact that my mom watched those types of shows while my dad liked watching football. It just made sense, because that was the difference between boys and girls.

As I got older, I grew fond of the Lifetime movies. When I went off to college, there were a number of Saturdays in my dorm when the girls and I would gather in one room and watch marathons of these films. Not only were they a mildly entertaining form of mindless pleasure, but it was really easy to make fun of these films too. The story line was always pretty much the same: a woman is wronged and she decides to take matters into her own hands and solve the situation in a vigilante fashion- complete with overly melodramatic acting. I always thought it was pretty cool that the stories centered around everyday women who I believed were extremely strong and independent. These women defended themselves and others after being raped, they struggled through sobriety in order to get their children back, they took on roles and jobs that were different from the societal norm, and they were regular women who fulfilled the socially accepted role of mother and domestic caregiver. I loved that I could see these different representations of women all in one place.

In recent years, there’s been an increase in the number of channels available on cable that are dedicated to “women’s interests.” As always we have Lifetime, whose slogan is “Television for Women.” But we also have Oxygen, which asks us to “Live Out Loud,” and WE: Women’s Entertainment, which claims to present “Life As We Know It.” And the content on each of these channels has changed dramatically. If I want to see some of those beloved Lifetime movies, I have to turn to Lifetime Movie Network, a channel dedicated solely to Lifetime‘s original movies. The channel itself has turned to syndicating some popular shows, such as The Golden Girls, Will and Grace, How I Met Your Mother, or Reba, while also creating their own dramas like Army Wives and Drop Dead Diva. The common thread remains that women and their experiences are still the focus of these shows. But as with most other networks, Lifetime has a number of reality shows as well. Project Runway is by far their most popular, which began its run on Bravo, but moved to its new home after Lifetime made a higher bid for its contract. The other popular reality show that Lifetime boasts is Dance Moms, which similarly to TLC‘s Toddlers and Tiaras depicts the lives of the intense stage moms that breed some of the brattiest children we see on television.

In the same vein, Oxygen and WE have moved into the reality tv realm. Oxygen is the home of The Bad Girls Club, a show that puts several women who would play the role of the bitchy character on any other reality show all in the same house in order to see what happens. The women often come off as trashy and unintelligent by the time editing is complete. Similarly, WE has Texas Multi Mamas, essentially a Real Housewives-esque show about mothers of multiples, and Braxton Family Values, which follows Toni Braxton and her family in a Kardashian-like setting. The other reality shows on WE tend to center around the wedding industry, like My Fair Wedding with David Tutera and Bridezillas.

So, let’s imagine that thousands of years from now, aliens from another planet make their way to the remains of earth in order to excavate artifacts that may tell them something about what it was like to live on this planet, and the only thing they can find is a copy of TV Guide from 2012. This single publication comes to serve as the sole basis for their assumptions about life at this time. Looking at this, it would seem that there are basically two types of women: absurdly bitchy women who have no regard for others, or those who intend to follow the traditional role of wife-and-motherhood. So essentially, there are still only two options for women that are housed in the virgin-whore dichotomy. You can be the woman who is obsessed with what her wedding will look like years before it becomes a reality, or the woman who is married, happily or otherwise, and focusing on raising a family, or the whore who is focused on partying, sex, and being a diva.

But what about the twenty-something who is single and focusing on her career in order to establish herself before she moves on to the “next steps” in her life, regardless of what that may look like? Where’s the television for the women who aren’t obsessed with bridal gowns and baby food? I have yet to find entertainment that targets this demographic on a major network. Currently, the representation of women on these so-called women’s networks is not pretty. The women, regardless of which end of the dichotomy they represent, are depicted as being gossipy and focus on little more than the dramatic situations that emerge between them. Do women go out with their girl friends and discuss aspects of their personal lives? Yes, of course. Are the only things that women focus on the catty arguments between other women and their relationships with men and mother-in-laws? Absolutely not. Looks like the aliens are going to be making some pretty horrendous assumptions about women from the first decade of the 21^st century.

While I’m aware of the fact that in order to keep ratings up, producers of television shows and networks look for high-drama situations that will keep an audience watching, I think it’s important to remember that not all women identify with bridezillas, momagers, or the mom blogger groups. There are women out there who have no desire to participate in catty behavior, and who would honestly like to have some television for women that depicts some of the intelligent issues and topics that are important to them. It’s not that we can’t enjoy this seemingly mindless television for the entertainment value. But we certainly should not have this be the only depiction of women available. As long as this remains the dominant presumption about women and their lives, women will remain disadvantaged. As long as the sole representation of women in the major media sources continues to be based around the sexist dichotomies that have been outdated for nearly a century, we will be doing women a disservice.
