A new blog is started. God knows its number in the row. Anyhow, I hope that it can deliver solution(s) for my readers.
Who I am? I’m originally a statistician. But I’ve recently been facing with web-based problems, tools and solutions. As I realised that only the prompt answers are adequate even in statistical services, I started to deal with on-line, web-based and one more characteristics, automated reporting.
What did I find? A huge jungle, without specific solutions, where even the directions are questionable sometimes.
I would like to introduce my efforts and solutions in this heroic struggle. The struggle with the statistical tools, like R, SAS, WINBUGS, WEKA, etc., the struggle with web-based environment like PHP, SQL, MYSQL, the struggle with the different CMS’s like WordPress, Textpattern, Typo3 and some connected topics like photo-editing and publishing, archiving, providing and improving security and so on.

Viele Blogger benutzen nicht WordPress, sondern Textpattern als Blog-Engine. Ähnlich wie BBCode in Foren benutzt wird, nutzt Textpattern eine eigene Auszeichnungssprache für Formatierungen und Links, genannt Textile. Da ich mir diese Befehle nie merken kann, habe ich mir in dem Firefox-AddOn BBCode eigene Tags eingerichtet, mit denen man die Textile/Textpattern-Formatierungen bauen kann.

Och än är jag inte färdig. Ställde till problem att föra över min gamla blogg i Textpattern till WordPress. Har cirka hundra bildlänkar som måste ändras. För att göra importeringen från Textpattern så var jag tvungen att hacka en fil som heter ‘textpattern.php’.

Fungerar utan ändringen men det tråkiga är att alla inläggen hamnar i en kategori som heter ‘Uncategorized’.

Hacka filer kan man inte göra på wordpress.com så jag installerade WordPress på ett annat webbhotell. Gjorde ändringen där. Importerade Textpattern och såg till att inläggen hamnade i rätt kategori. Sedan exporterade jag till denna blogg.

Ytterligare ett problem är att det inte finns stöd för textile. Därför ser många sidor konstiga ut. Har använt det flitigt.

Textpattern kan jag utan och innan. Detta känns ovant men man lär sig väl.

TextPattern — достаточно известен среди блогеров. Конечно он не так распространен, как WordPress, но все же без сомнения заслуживает внимания. Итак, для подключения кода сеозавра необходимо сделать следующее:

• принять условия соглашения;
• зарегистрироваться в системе SEOzavr.ru;
• произвести настройку своего сайта под управлением TextPattern.

Настройка сводится к созданию нужного нам шаблона и подключения его к «секции». Теперь все по порядку.

Проведем следующие действия:

1. Копируем секретную папку (скаченную с сеозавра) в корневую директорию.
2. Заходим в админку TextPattern: оформление → страницы.
3. Создаем копию шаблона «default» и назовем ее SEOzavr.
4. Редактируем полученный шаблон:
   1. Удаляем теги Title, Keywords, Description а вместо них ставим:

$seozavr = new seozavr();
$seozavr->encoding = 'utf-8';
$seozavr->showHead();
   2. Удаляем все из основной центральной части (обычно это содержимое внутри дива id=”content”) и туда вставляем код:

$seozavr->showBody();

5. Создаем новую «секцию» и назуваем ее например «seoarts», к которой в качестве шаблона (пункт «использовать страницу») подключаем созданный в предыдущем пункте шаблон SEOzavr:
   1. Название секции: «seoarts»
   2. Заголовок секции: например «Интересное»
   3. На главной странице? — Да
6. Сохраняем.

Вот собственно и все. После этого в меню появится пункт «Интересное», в котором и будет располагаться каталог рекламных статей. Будут вопросы — прошу в комменты.

Утомляет как процесс донастройки и оптимизации вновь создаваемых блогов, так и вообще использование единого движка.

Ну и после того, как на двух моих блогах поисковые боты перегрузили сервак свыше планировавшегося (и я был вынужден убрать их на более дорогой тариф), я начал активно интересоваться другими движками.

В осмысленности MovableType я сомневаюсь (тоже ведь тяжелая система). Вместо экспериментов с ней я создал блог на TextPattern.

Непривычно, но пока нравится.

When we do a new event – I want

• Thumbnail to appear on front page with the excerpt – and the big image appear with the article…. I can do that but its the formatting that is the issue.
• Get rid of the “commenting for this article is closed” in full event article.

Formatting the resources page – How bout set boxes where info can go (table grids?) – I hear tables are evil and everything should be done in css – but IE has issues with certain CSS, whereas tables are apparently solid.) – But if we have different cells I’d like them to work like different articles – you know, you write and choose which cell it goes into and then it uses css as its formatting.

In response Marc Farley and others pointing out that my blog doesn’t accept comments and doesn’t provide trackbacks, I have accelerated my search for an alternative blogging solution. Currently, I use TextPattern for my entire site. TextPattern is great as a full CMS solution — including allowing multiple people to contribute design and content in a controlled fashion — but for most of what I use deadinkvinyl.com, a simple blogging solution is sufficient. With trackbacks.

Consequently, I’m evaluating the migration of the blog portion of my site to blog.deadinkvinyl.com and using WordPress.com to host it. Unfortunately, WordPress.com doesn’t support Textile for editing articles — which I really like — but I’m willing to live with that trade off to have a solid, simple blogging platform. I have already migrated all of my articles from here and my old Blogger site and I am half way through the process of categorizing and tagging the old articles.

In the coming days, I will create an Apache Rewrite so that all incoming links to content on www.deadinkvinyl.com are correctly directed to the appropriate place in blog.deadinkvinyl.com. After that, I will update www.deadinkvinyl.com to be a simple information page.

Something I have noticed when using textileClass.php the simple text mark-up language written for textpattern, is lists seem to have the last item broken off in to its own list.

Un amigo antes de ayer, me comentaba que lo que mas recursos consumía en su servidor, era su blog (con wordpress). Sin duda muchos hablan de rendimiento, pero para basarse en cual es mejor y cual es peor se requieren de comparativas, y justamente eso fue lo que realizo Felipe Lavín de Yukei.

I have settled on TextPattern as the best long-term solution for managing my site content. Over the next few weeks I will be consolidating my content from Another Student Pilot and the Dead Ink Vinyl Blog. Once that is accomplished, I plan to post articles twice a week.

I am using Textpattern since Dean Allen published the first version of the program. Mainly as a blog, but for some business-related websites, its CMS-qualities are very usefull. However, I cannot clearly see where all this is going to. I have asked a similar question some time ago, but perhaps now things got clearer.

Blog?

TXP is great for blogs. One could argue that there are systems that deal better with blogs, especially WordPress is a great system if you do not want to fiddle around with themes, sections and so on and as far as I know, it will soon have genuine tagging-support, a feature that is only achievable with plugins now. (As in TXP.) So could we see TXP’s future as a blogging-tool together with many, many others? I don’t think, it will. All major web2.0-sites (I hate this term, yet everyone knows what I am talking about) do not include TXP in their blog-listings. Take flickr as an example: They list a lot of plattforms to blog to, TXP, however, is not there. The same with a lot of other web2.0-sites.

CMS for Professionals?

Is TXP the right choice when it comes to professional websites that do not deal with blog-like site-structures? I don’t know, but I would say no (although I use it a lot for such websites). On the one hand, TXP is too much focused on blog-like websites, on the other hand, it has the power to easily manage a small and also medium-sized website with ease as long as there are not too many subpages. Here also plug-ins can help, but if you look at TXP’s plugin-development, you can name a dozen active developers and about three times the amount of people more, who switched away from TXP.

Plugins

I had a look into WP and when returning back to TXP (I did it, because nothing beats the flexibility of the section-system), everything got quiet. Too quiet, to be honest. I am just an average user and somehow I have a strange feeling when looking at release dates and seeing that the last TXP-release was half a year ago. Many problems that are quite often mentioned in the forum are either ignored or of no urgency, however these problems include tagging and comment-spam (with which I have to deal with in the last weeks, too).

If you look at the plugins and especially their availability, you have most likely the following situation: One guy made a good plugin. If you visit his website, however, the bottom-line of this person’s blog already says “published with wordpress” and the plugin can be found somewhere in the archives with a new remark telling you that the future development of this plugin has been stopped.

Themes

One of the darkest chapters of TXP is the availability of themes. No matter whether themes are important or not – people use them as a basis or as an inspiration for their own themes. Also, newbie-users would profit much more if they could get an idea of the whole presentational-structure of TXP by examples. I invested much time in TXP and learned the whole thing by myself, but if I learned something from outside, it was by installing (well, if you can call this procedure installing) other’s themes.

Documentation

As long as I have used TXP in its basic english version, documentation, especially the question marks inside TXP were no problem at all. Now TXP can be used in German language (and many others), yet documentation sucks. Even some links from the textpattern.com site to wikis and so on are broken! This makes dealing with TXP really difficult for people who just started with it. Even for me, when looking for specific semantics, it is digging through one of the worst written documentations, therefore, the forum gives me much faster answers! (Also, the translation of the diagnostics into various languages, was a bad idea: The contents of the “Results” in the diagnostics tab should be in one language available only, this makes helping much more easy!)

And, something else: I think the splitting into various domains makes the whole thing really annoying. Keep it simple, somebody once said, and for me help.textpattern.com, wiki.textpattern.com etc. is simply easier to remember than various domains.

Development and Psychology

When I motivated people to start blogging (or to use websites and not sending me thousands of photos by e-mail… whatever), they rejected TXP simply because of its release date. WP is updated every month or at least every two months – was their argument. I myself install WP time to time, because I am really curious on what these guys added to their CMS. So how do TXP-developers deal with this and what are the plans for the future of TXP? Paid service? Blogging-Plattform? CMS for professional websites? Hum. Answers greatly appreciated.

‘ve updated a few things on the LMAP site…. and deleted a couple of the links. Hope that’s OK. I’ll keep doing a few more things over the next few days when I have a chance. I’m basically copying things from the parish web PDF.

I think the home page is good with the mission and vision statements but the sidebar makes the page too long. When you scroll down there is nothing in the main part of the page. Can I get rid of the tools, Browse (what does that do?) and the Feeds links? I know RSS and Atom are cool but for the moment I don’t think it’s needed. Less is more and all that. Streamlined. Tell me to “go jump you luddite” if you like.

I’m also thinking of putting the youth stuff under “Ministry”… what’ya think?

Пока игрался с textpattern на шаредкоде, обнаружил сей баг, который потенциально может затронуть тех, кто собственно textpattern пользует.

Испугало то, что отключалось (правильнее сказать истекало) комментирование в статьях, с постинга которых прошло много времени. излазил все настройки – нету ничего такого – хотя видно, что должно ведь быть по разумению. И ведь хорошо что погуглил. наткнулся на пост, а из него – по комментам – на статью FAQ.

Суть состоит в том, что если в Admin -> Preferences -> Basic для раздела Comments вы наблюдаете только два пункта (и у вас версия 4.0.4 и нет желания/возможности пока апдейтить) – эта заметка для вас.

Сделать надо всего лишь два действия. Раз – забрать с вашего хостинга файл ./textpattern/include/txp_prefs.php, найти в нем строку 89:

$evt_list = safe_column('event', 'txp_prefs', "type = 0 and prefs_id = 1 group by 'event' order by event desc");

и удалить из нее кавычки вокруг event (чтобы она совпадала с этим вариантом):

$evt_list = safe_column('event', 'txp_prefs', "type = 0 and prefs_id = 1 group by event order by event desc");

два – залить файл обратно. Финита ля комедия – добро пожаловать в настройки, в пункт Comments:Disabled after.
