Atmosfera de la teza a fost neaşteptat de liniştita . Am primit subiectele şi toţi au început sa le rezolve fără nici un comentariu. Trist! Parca era mai frumos sa se aprindă un mic scandal . Glumeam! Eu am terminat printre primii ,ca de obicei ,dar nu cred ca iau mai mult de 8 , as zice. Acum depinde de aprecierea doamnei profesoare .Timpul teoretic de lucru a fost de 50 de minute , dar cel practic a atins cota de 30 .

A venit perioada tezelor. Toata lumea se agita, ah da, defapt nu numai a tezelor, a tuturor testelor, ascultarilor si oriceee. Asa, continuand, toata lumea se agita, invata, lucreaza ca doar nah’ sa ia nota mare la teza ca altfel nu vine Mosu’(va zic din proprie experienta). Si, eu aici respectiva, de clasa a 8 a, am de dat teza la romana, matematica si istorie/geografie (moi istorie). Si da-i frate, acum ultima saptamana dinaintea tezelor, toata lumea te forteaza ca sunt si ultimele 2-3 saptamani pana la vacanta si trebuie sa avem macar doua note la fiecare obiect.

Saptamana asta e teribila. Luni, am facut recapitulare la romana pentru teza, si am avut si test la chimie, la care, Doamne sa ma ierte, da sper sa iau o nota decenta. Passing by, astazi, am avut test la fizica, am luat 9 ca am gresit o amarata de grila, si m-a ascultat la istorie. Maine, maine iar e ultima zi de recapitulare la romana pentru ca vineri, the big day, dam teza. Joi, o zi mai linistita, dar ajungi acasa, te odihnesti si da-i si repeta ca ai teza a doua zi. Vineri, za big day, teza la romana, de invatat la geografie, de invatat la istorie, de repetat un referat ca sa-l prezinti in fata scolii, test la germana. Cat mai cred profesorii astia ca mai putem duce? La modul cel mai serios, zic. Daca o tinem asa, in doua saptamani suntem morti. Slava Domnului, ca luni nu facem scoala si stam acasa si marti e 1 decembrie, ziulica Romaniei si iar acasa. Dar dupa, teza la mate si istorie. Domnu’ sa ne ajute!

It’s that time of the year again. Now an annual delight, the London African Film Festival is soon upon us. This year focuses on the signifcance of digital technology and it’s irrevocable impact on African cinema, no doubt showcasing the ubiquitence of Nigerian films.

Feature films and documentaries include:

• Abakar Chene Massar’s CAPTAIN MAJID – a metaphor of the disenchanted youth in Chad
• Ethiopian director Nega Tariku’s film ADERA – a story of an Ethiopian refugee’s struggle to survive in Johannesburg
• A selection of the best of AMAA (the African Movie Academy Awards) -  includes the Nigerian documentary filmmaker Sani Elhadj Magori’s seminal documentary FOR THE BEST AND FOR THE ONION, about one man’s determination to get the best onion harvest in order to marry the love of his life, Wanuri Kahiu’s FROM A WHISPER, a superb drama based on the bombing of the US embassy in Nairobi in 1998.

Central to the festival is a major conference entitled Producing and Distributing African Film in the Digital Era that will take place on Sunday 29 November in partnership with the University of Westminster Africa Media Centre (AMC) and in association with the Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI) and Communication Research in Arts and Media (CREAM).
This one-day interdisciplinary conference has invited academics, film and video producers, policy makers, film distributors, Africa specialists, and development practitioners to debate the role and future of African film and video.

Relatedly, M-NET recently launched the African Film Library, which is posed to be the largest digital collection of African feature films, shorts and documentaries. Whilst this is a move that on the surface at least, seeks to address the issue of distribution, which has been a thorn in the flesh for many film buffs, yours truly included, there is healthy scepticism about M-NET’s non-altruistic monopoly of African films. Therefore, whilst we celebrate and start flexing our fingers for cable TV decoder action and prepare to feast our eyes, hearts and minds on films by legends like Senegalese Ousmane Sembene and Djibril Mambety,  we do so with the awareness that it’s a start. The only one we have so far. Regardless, whoever is in charge of scouting films at M-NET is certainly a step ahead, with Haile Gerima’s TEZA already in the bag, even before it won best film at FESPACO.

Suntem la jumătatea lui noiembrie , cred , si peste doua zile dau teza. Am ieşit ieri la tabla si am rezolvat cu greu o problema ,dar am reuşit în final după ce m-a încălzit puţin domnul profesor . Deci bine ca am înţeles acum problemele , fiindcă teoria o fac eu cu grija şi atenţie . Revin cu o scurta continuare joi .

Am teză la Romană pe 3 decembrie, adică peste 2 săptămâni şi eu nu ştiu nimic. Ce-o să fac nu ştiu! Dupa aceea vin celelalte teze la Istorie, Logică şi Engleză. La Istorie dau exact pe 3 ianuarie în prima zi de şcoala dupa Revelion nici nu mă trezesc bine după ce sărbătoresc trecerea în noul an că dau teză la Istorie care sunt varză! La Engleză şi la Logică nu le avem încă stabilite dar cred că le vom avea dupa sărbatorile de iarnă. Aşa că nu voi mai putea intra prea des pe blog pentru că trebuie să invăt şi să trec cu bine peste aceste teze.

Haile Gerima, the producer of the film Sankofa, has a new movie named Teza that will be hitting theaters soon. Sankofa challenged the viewer to witness the experience of a contemporary African-American woman that travels back in time and experience slavery. In Teza, Gerima’s main character is Anberber, a young Ethiopian doctor who was educated in Germany. The film chronicles Anberber’s return home during the ruthless regime of the former dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam and how he comes to terms with the disconnect between himself and his homeland.

Teza has already been well received around the world and won the prestigious Golden Stallion of Yennenga Award for Best Film at the Pan-African Film and Television Festival.

E’ il caso di Teza, film fluviale, epico, di grande impatto emotivo e politico, settimo lungometraggio di Haile Gerima, regista etiope, emigrato a Chicago fin dal 1967, dopo un apprendistato nella troupe teatrale del padre, specializzata in opere storiche della cultura tradizionale.

Nel 1969 Gerima si sposta alla UCLA, frequentando i corsi di cinema e aderendo al Movimento Nazionalista Nero, che nasce in quell’epoca.

“E’ stato per me il periodo migliore per venire in America – ricorda Gerima – il Movimento Nero mi ha fatto uscire dalla mia sottomessa posizione coloniale. Da allora ho sviluppato il tema del ritorno, del viaggio, tutti i miei film sono sul ritorno.”

I suoi primi cortometraggi sono prodotti, durante gli anni all’UCLA. 

Nel 1976 insegna a Washington DC alla Howard University, la più grande università afroamericana degli USA, dove per tanti anni lascia la sua impronta su molti giovani filmmakers, invitandoli ad esplorare le storie della diaspora africana.

Gerima fonda nel 1982 la Mypheduh Films (MFI), che diffonde i suoi film e quelli di altri cineasti afroamericani o di origine africana e nel 1996 apre anche il Sankofa Video Bookstore, per combattere il rifiuto delle catene commerciali nel distribuire i suoi film e quelli di altri registi neri.

Presentato in sordina alla Mostra, negli ultimi giorni del concorso, Teza ha vinto il Premio speciale della giuria e l’Osella per la migliore sceneggiatura.

Il film racconta su tre piani temporali diversi, la storia di Anberber, un medico etiope, che ha abbandonato la propria terra per poter studiare in Germania e che ritorna in patria, con l’illusione di poter utilizzare le conoscenze acquisite in Europa, per migliorare le condizioni di vita di un paese martoriato dal colonialismo e dall’Impero di carta del Negus, Hailè Selassiè.

La parte ambientata in Germania, nella Colonia degli anni settanta, riflette l’appassionante formazione medica e ideologica di Anberber, circondato da amici ed amiche che condividono con lui il sogno di una rivoluzione che spezzi il gioco razzista e post-coloniale verso il Terzo Mondo, consentendo anche all’Africa di intraprendere il cammino verso la modernità.

Il giovane medico fa ritorno in Etiopia nel 1974, quando viene deposto il Negus e si afferma un regime marxista, sotto la guida del colonnello Menghistu.

Le speranze di rinnovamento, progresso e giustizia sociale, vengono però ben presto contraddette da un regime dispotico, di stampo sovietico, nel quale ogni libertà è soffocata nella repressione.

Successivamente si confronteranno due fazioni comuniste interne, una filo-maoista, l’altra filo-sovietica: il risultato sono gratuite persecuzioni, massacri raccapriccianti e uccisioni di massa, che Gerima descrive senza nascondere nulla.

Tesfaye, l’amico di Anberber, che l’aveva convinto a tornare, viene brutalmente assassinato dai chierici di regime e lo stesso protagonista, considerato un intellettuale scomodo, viene inviato nella Germania dell’Est e costretto ad una impossibile autocritica.

Con la Caduta del Muro di Berlino, Anberber verrà preso di mira dai naziskin, rimanendo ferito, ancora una volta, nel corpo e nell’anima.

Il suo nuovo ritorno in patria nel 1990, invecchiato e storpio, sarà all’insegna della riconciliazione con l’anziana madre, con la propria terra e le sue tradizioni più profonde.

Anberber si aggira come un fantasma nei luoghi della sua infanzia e non riesce più a ricordare: è sopraffatto dagli incubi e dall’impotenza di fronte alla Storia.

Ed è qui che il film di Gerima abbandona il racconto politico e si fa elegia, cercando nella bellezza e nel mistero della natura la possibilità di superare gli orrori e di riannodare i fili del passato e del presente.

Paradossalmente, il Negus ne esce riabilitato, almeno come patriota che ha combattuto l’orripilante colonialismo italiano, simboleggiato dalla collina Mussolini.

Il suo spessore umano e la sua visione panafricana ne escono rafforzate in un toccante reperto d’archivio, quando accoglie con dignità e serenità le sue “dimissioni” obbligate e l’esilio.[1]

La colonna sonora alterna il jazz con i ritmi tradizionali, assecondando la straordinaria fotografia di Mario Masini – storico collaboratore di Carmelo Bene – che coglie la luce naturale, riproducendo lo stile documentaristico degli anni ‘70, con colori forti e pastosi.

Il montaggio vorticoso dello stesso Gerima e di Loren Hankin racconta la storia attraverso tre dimensioni: quella del presente dei primi anni novanta, quella del passato giovanile di Anberber negli anni settanta ed infine quella onirica.

L’andamento, fatto di libere associazioni visive e poetiche, segue l’andamento apparentemente casuale di una narrazione, secondo la tradizione africana dell’oralità come trasmissione del sapere, capace di farsi trasportare da un momento all’altro, da un’emozione all’altra.[2]

Gerima riesce a restituire il disordine di quegli anni, attraverso il sovrapporsi dei piani temporali.

Teza è naturalmente il racconto di una sconfitta, tanto personale quanto collettiva.

Ad una gioventù etiope violentata nei suoi ideali e manipolata da una corruzione che annienta ogni ricerca di libertà e giustizia, fa da contraltare, nel ricordo di Anberber, un’analisi amara del marxismo, vissuto in tutte le sue forme, dall’ideologia militante, alla pratica di governo, sino alla dittatura più brutale ed all’opposizione interna.

La generazione degli anni settanta ha anteposto i rigidi schemi politici alle ragioni dell’individuo, alla sua sensibilità, come ricorda Anberber a Tesfaye, in una delle scene più intense del film.

Il cinema di Haile Gerima è un cinema del ritorno: dall’esilio autoimposto, il regista ed il suo protagonista non possono che ritornare al proprio paese, per tentare di portare un po’ di luce in una tragedia infinita.

Il viaggio si carica di nostalgia e finisce per abbandonarsi ad un disegno più grande, nel quale è difficile trovare il proprio posto.

La difficoltà di Anberber a ricordare la propria storia sembra quasi rispecchiarsi nell’indifferenza con cui l’occidente ha rimosso le atrocità africane dal proprio orizzonte civile.

Questa colpevole amnesia risuona nelle ultime parole, che chiudono il film: “questi eserciti, armati fino ai denti, si impegnano a distruggersi reciprocamente. Ma chi fornisce loro soldi e armi?”
